These two volumes provide a completely new translation of the philosophical works of Descartes, based on the best available Latin and French texts. They are intended to replace the only reasonably comprehensive selection of his works in English, by Haldane and Ross, first published in 1911. All the works included in that edition are translated here, together with a number of additional texts crucial for an understanding of Cartesian philosophy, including important material from Descartes? scientific writings. The result should meet (...) the widespread demand for an accurate and authoritative edition of Descartes? philosophical writings in clear and readable modern English. (shrink)

Theory of Literature was originally published in 1949. It is not a textbook introducing the young to the elements of literary appreciation nor a survey of the techniques employed in scholarly research. The authors have sought to unite "poetics" (or literary theory) and "criticism" (evaluation of literature) with "scholarship" ("research") and "literary history" (the "dynamics"of literature, in contrast to the "statics" of theory and criticism).

This volume preserves the format in which Discourse on Method was originally published: as a preface to Descartes's writings on optics, geometry, and meteorology. In his introduction, Olscamp discusses the value of reading the Discourse alongside these three works, which sheds new light on Descartes’s method. Includes an updated bibliography.

This edition features reliable, accessible translations; useful editorial materials; and a straightforward presentation of the Objections and Replies, including the objections from Caterus, Arnauld, and Hobbes, accompanied by Descartes' replies, in their entirety. The letter serving as a reply to Gassendi--in which several of Descartes' associates present Gassendi's best arguments and Descartes' replies--conveys the highlights and important issues of their notoriously extended exchange. Roger Ariew's illuminating Introduction discusses the Meditations and the intellectual environment surrounding its reception.

Obwohl nur in einer anonymen Kopie überliefert, zählt die in diesem "Gespräch" von 1648 vollzogene Erörterung der wesentlichen Punkte der cartesischen Lehre zu den meistzitierten Texten Descartes'. Die Ausgabe bietet die aufgrund des Manuskripts bereinigte lateinische Originalfassung mit Lesarten und parallel dazu eine erste deutsche Übersetzung.

Diese Ausgabe enthält mit den "Regulae ad directionem ingenii" und den sachlich korrespondierenden "Cogitationes privatae" zwei frühe Texte Descartes’ aus der Zeit von 1619 bis 1628; erstere in einer völlig neuen, letztere erstmalig in einer deutschen Übersetzung. Grundlage für die Wiedergabe des lateinischen Textes der Regulae und der Übersetzung dieses größten Fragments aus der Zeit vor Descartes’ Übersiedlung in die Niederlande ist die kritische Ausgabe von Giovanni Crapulli, La Haye 1966, die der schwierigen Überlieferungslage der erst postum aus dem Nachlaß (...) publizierten Schrift am ehesten gerecht wird; die von Springmeyer in seiner 1973 innerhalb der "Philosophischen Bibliothek" vorgelegten und seither mehrfach nachgedruckten Ausgabe des Textes vorgenommenen Eingriffe in die Textgestalt werden daher in dieser Neuausgabe nicht beibehalten. Gegenstand der Regulae und auch der "Cogitationes privatae" ist die Frage nach der Methode zur Erlangung sicherer Erkenntnis. In Descartes’ Philosophie bleibt die Frage nach der Methode durchgängig aktuell, auch dort, wo metaphysische, physikalische oder ethische Inhalte verhandelt werden. Und so verwundert es auch nicht, daß er das Manuskript der Regulae, an das er wohl 1628 zuletzt Hand angelegt hatte, noch 1649 mit auf seine letzte Reise nach Stockholm nahm, obwohl ihm 1637 mit dem anonym publizierten "Discours de la Méthode pour bien conduire sa Raison" bereits der große Durchbruch gelungen war und seine darin auf vier Regeln reduzierte Methode allgemeine Beachtung gefunden hatte. In this article, we distinguish between a ‘game code of conduct’, an ‘ethical and/or legal code of the military profession’, ‘codes of social intercourse’, and a ‘code of respect’, and we assess to what extent these codes are reflected in the chivalrous behaviour we see today. Chivalry has developed from archaic medieval game codes of conduct into a codification regarding the laws of war and humanitarian law, but also in behavioural standards that are formalized in books of etiquette. However, these (...) forms of moral codes of conduct do not overcome the problem of benevolent sexism, due to the fact that ‘chivalry’ is in essence a masculine ideology that excludes women from the military profession. Eventually, chivalric codes of social intercourse might develop into a code of respect, which may solve this issue. (shrink)

This article seeks to state, first, what traditionally has been assumed must be the case in order for an infinite epistemic regress to arise. It identifies three assumptions. Next it discusses Jeanne Peijnenburg's and David Atkinson's setting up of their argument for the claim that some infinite epistemic regresses can actually be completed and hence that, in addition to foundationalism, coherentism, and infinitism, there is yet another solution (if only a partial one) to the traditional epistemic regress problem. The article (...) argues that Peijnenburg and Atkinson fail to address the traditional regress problem, as they don't adopt all of the three assumptions that underlie the traditional regress problem. It also points to a problem in the notion of making probable that Peijnenburg and Atkinson use in their account of justification. (shrink)

Dans les Principia philosophiae, publies pour la premiere fois en latin en 1644, Descartes expose sous une forme synthetique ce que les analyses des Meditations et du Discours avaient mis a jour, a savoir l'articulation entre les principes generaux de la connaissance humaine, les principes des sciences et ses decouvertes sur la structure du monde physique. C'est dans la Lettre-preface a son traducteur francais, l'abbe Picot, qu'apparait aussi la celebre conception de la philosophie comme une arborescence, a partir des racines (...) metaphysiques, en un tronc de la physique puis trois branches principales que constituent la medecine, la mecanique et la morale. Filant la metaphore, Descartes vise le dernier degre de la sagesse comme le fruit ultime de cette croissance organique du savoir: Or comme ce n'est pas des racines, ni du tronc des arbres, qu'on cueille les fruits, mais seulement des extremites de leurs branches, ainsi la principale utilite de la philosophie depend de celles de ses parties qu'on ne peut apprendre que les dernieres. Degree-sentences, i.e. sentences that seem to refer to things that allow of degrees, are widely used both inside and outside of philosophy, even though the metaphysics of degrees is much of an untrodden field. This paper aims to fill this lacuna by addressing the following four questions: [A] Is there some one thing, such that it is degree sensitive? [B] Are there things x, y, and z that stand in a certain relation to each other, viz. the relation that x (...) has more y than z? [C] In those cases in which degree sentences do not refer to phenomena that are degree sensitive, what is responsible for their prima facie seeming to do so? [D] If there are degree sensitive things, to which ontological categories do they belong? We answer each of these questions by arguing that there are, metaphysically speaking, different phenomena that degree sentences refer to: some refer to determinates that emanate from a certain determinable, others to tokens that are instantiations of a certain type, and yet others to what we call ‘complex, resultant properties that are constituted by stereotypical properties’. Finally, we show the relevance of our answers by applying them to the notions of freedom and belief. (shrink)
