Recent efforts in a range of scientific fields have emphasised research and methods concerning individual differences and individualisation. This article brings together various scientific disciplines—ecology, evolution, and animal behaviour; medicine and psychiatry; public health and sport/exercise science; sociology; psychology; economics and management science—and presents their research on individualisation. We then clarify the concept of individualisation as it appears in the disciplinary casework by distinguishing three kinds of individualisation studied in and across these disciplines: Individualisation ONE as creating/changing individual differences (the (...) process that generates differences between individuals: intrapopulation or intraspecific variation/heterogeneity); Individualisation TWO as individualising applications (the tailoring or customising of something—information, treatment, a product or service, etc.—for an individual or specific group of individuals); and Individualisation THREE as social changes influencing autonomy, risk, and responsibilities (the process discussed under the rubric of sociological individualisation theory). Moreover, we analyse conceptual links between individualisation and individuality, and characterise different sorts of individuality that the disciplines study. This paper aims to promote interdisciplinary research concerning individualisation by establishing a common conceptual-theoretical basis, while leaving room for disciplinary differences. (shrink)

In ihnen erfahren die Menschen die Alterität anderer Kulturen und ihrer selbst und werden (...) dadurch gebildet. Die Künste sind nicht nur den Angehörigen ihrer Kultur, sondern allen Menschen zugänglich. Sie vermitteln heterologische Erfahrungen und haben daher für die Verständigung zwischen den verschiedenen Kulturen eine große Bedeutung. Visual stimuli that are made invisible by a following mask can nonetheless affect motor responses. To localize the origin of these target priming effects we used the psychological refractory period paradigm. Participants classified tones as high or low, and responded to the position of a visual target that was preceded by a prime. The stimulus onset asynchrony between both tasks varied. In Experiment 1 the tone task was followed by the position task and SOA dependent target priming effects were observed. (...) When the visual position task preceded the tone task in Experiment 2, with short SOA the priming effect propagated entirely to the tone task yielding faster responses to tones on visually congruent trials and delayed responses to tones on visually incongruent trials. Together, results suggest that target priming effects arise from processing before and at the level of the central bottleneck such as sensory analysis and response selection. (shrink)

Although depression is characterized as a mood disorder it turns out that, like moods in general, it cannot be explained independently of a theory of emotion. In this paper I outline one promising theory of emotion and show how it deals with the phenomenon of depressive mood. An important aspect of MAT is the role it assigns to peripheral information processing systems in setting up emotional responses. The operations of these systems are automatic and opaque to consciousness, but they represent (...) information about the significance of the environment for the subject, bias cognition and behaviour, and have a characteristic phenomenology. I show how understanding the nature of peripheral appraisal provides a principled way to link neurochemistry and mood via an information processing theory of the circuitry targeted by antidepressant treatment. The discussion is organized around Matthew Ratcliffe's distinction between pre-intentional and intentional feelings and suggests that the MAT might provide a way to link phenomenological and mechanistic accounts of feeling states characteristic of depression. The present article first places Mach’s consideration about space and geometry into the context of the discussion of these issues in the nineteenth and early twentieth century and then proposes three interpretations of Mach’s thesis, put forward in chapter XXI of his Knowledge and Error, that the problem of measuring the volumes of material bodies is the origin of geometry. According to the first of these interpretations, Mach’s thesis is an assertion about the historical origin of the science of geometry. (...) Alternatively, one may understand Mach as suggesting that our geometric theorizing is best understood by relating it to our handling of material bodies and our interest in their volumes. Finally, Mach’s thesis may be conceived as asserting that the most appropriate form of geometry would be a metric geometry of the volumes of solids. The article concludes with a discussion of objections raised by Brentano against both Mach’s thesis of the priority of the measurement of volumes and his conception of bodies as complexes as sensations. Este texto investiga a questão do poder nas concepções teóricas expostas pela filósofa alemã Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) e pelo filósofo francês Michel Foucault (1926-1984) como um pressuposto dos processos ético-políticos. Arendt e Foucault delineiam o poder em suas respectivas obras de formas distintas: enquanto Arendt defende que o poder surge com a ação política, ou seja, quando o indivíduo vivencia a própria liberdade ao que, por estar em uma comunidade, participa dos “negócios humanos” objetivando agir conjuntamente, engajando-se junto aos seus (...) respectivos pares na esfera público-política, Foucault, em seus escritos, subescreve o poder de maneira a analisar os processos de individualização que recobrem e que produzem um protótipo de sujeito, com cada indivíduo possuindo as potencialidades de multiplicar e de maximizar a força que detém. O intuito é a manutenção e o suporte das bases econômicas e da moralidade axiomática do corpus social. Nesse contexto, uma das diferenças mais consideráveis e marcantes acerca das noções de poder, entre ambos, é que, enquanto Arendt sedimenta uma ideia de ação política comprometida e vinculada aos outros agentes, estes situados no mesmo espaço político, expondo as suas ideias e submetendo-as ao debate público e ao confronto necessário à consecução da liberdade, Foucault concebe o poder como uma rede de relações intercambiáveis e estrategicamente posicionadas. Mit P. Bernays geht S. Körner in der Nachfolge von I. Kant und J.F. Fries davon aus, "daß eine gewisse Art rein-anschaulicher Erkenntnis als Ausgangspunkt der Mathematik genommen werden muß." Andererseits betont Körner einen Wechsel z.B. der geometrischen Anschauung in den nicht-euklidischen Geometrien, der durch die Unabhängigkeitsbeweise für geometrische Axiome möglich wurde. Analog könnte man von einem Wechsel der mengentheoretischen Anschauung in nicht-cantorschen Mengenlehren sprechen, der durch Unabhängigkeitsbeweise mengentheoretischer Axiome eingeleitet wurde. In der Algebra werden Axiomensysteme untersucht, in denen nicht (...) mehr alle anschaulichen Rechengesetze der Zahlen gelten. Für die Analysis lassen sich nonstandard Modelle angeben. Angesichts dieses Pluralismus der Modelle und Axiomensysteme kann man nicht mehr von der einen anschaulichen Mathematik sprechen — wie in den Tagen von Euklid, Piaton, Leibniz und Kant. Es stellt sich daher die Aufgabe einer Erkenntnistheorie der Mathematik, deren Kategorien den modernen Problementwicklungen Rechnung tragen, aber auch ihre anschaulich-konstruktiven Grundlagen aufzeigen.
