Introduces contemporary American philosophy of technology through six of its leading figures. The six American philosophers of technology whose work is profiled in this clear and concise introduction to the field—Albert Borgmann, Hubert Dreyfus, Andrew Feenberg, Donna Haraway, Don Ihde, and Langdon Winner—represent a new, empirical direction in the philosophical study of technology that has developed mainly in North America. Why do creationists persist in rejecting the evidence for Darwin’s theory of evolution? This paper explores longstanding disagreements among Christians over the epistemic status of evolution. Like other studies that have tried to define the evidence for evolution, a recent analysis by Gijsbert van den Brink, Jeroen de Ridder, and René van Woudenberg does not adequately face up to antecedent commitments that play into any assessment of evolution. The scientific theory of evolution involves higher-level models that are associated with a (...) range of non-scientific factors, including theological judgments. In light of these realities, an emphasis on mutual dialogue and understanding offers promising opportunities for Christians trying to discover the truth about God’s creation. (shrink)

Moral Philosophy, says the author, neither is nor should be neutral with respect to ethical systems. He argues for rationalism as a definite all-embracing methodological directive that may secure a critical, non-dogmatic approach to all views, including moral views.

I give an account of Max Weber's views concerning the basis of the objectivity of the cultural sciences. In this connection, I offer a critical discussion of his distinction between different "value spheres," each with its own "intrinsic logic." I then consider parallels between Weber's "value spheres" and central elements of Bourdieu's field theory and Luhmann's systems theory, and try to show to what extent Bourdieu's and Luhmann's problems, and the solutions they suggest, can be seen as similar to Weber's. (...) I conclude by a general consideration of Weber's, Bourdieu's, and Luhmann's approach to the problem of objectivity. The author, a High Court Judge, has chaired the Danish Committee on Scientific Dishonesty (DCSD) since its establishment in 1992. The Committee has worked in the health sector, but from 1999 the scope has been broadened to cover all fields of science. The article describes how the work is organised and the experiences gained.

En écho à la crainte de voir la "politique disparaître complètement du monde", selon l'inquiétude formulée par Hannah Arendt, notamment dans sa Crise de la culture, les trois essais qui composent ce recueil tentent d'apporter quelques éléments de réponse à des questions contemporaines de philosophie politique. Aussi cette menace d'une disparition éventuelle de la politique semble-t-elle suivre de nos jours trois tendances interdépendantes : sa dissolution privative dans les mécanismes du marché ; l'évincement de ses catégories usuelles (nation, souveraineté...) au (...) profit des notions religieuses (croisade, axe du mal...) ; enfin, l'occultation tendancieuse du débat démocratique au nom d'une expertise garante d'une objectivité "non partisane". Si crise de la politique et crise de la culture paraissent ainsi s'interpeller, sans doute est-ce parce qu'elles révèlent un même enjeu : la reconquête, à rebours de cette privatisation processuelle de l'espace public, d'un monde commun – ce que souligne d'ailleurs avec force la question écologique. A l'inverse d'une philosophie politique abstraite sise sur des principes immuables, l'idée est plutôt la suivante : comment articuler concrètement et stratégiquement, dans le sillage de Daniel Bensaïd, philosophie et politique?
