An online world exists in which businesses have become burdened with managerial and legal duties regarding the seeking of informed consent and the protection of privacy and personal data, while growing public cynicism regarding personal data collection threatens the healthy development of marketing and e-commerce. This research seeks to address such cynicism by assisting organisations to devise ethical consent management processes that consider an individual’s attitudes, their subjective norms and their perceived sense of control during the elicitation of consent. It (...) does so by developing an original conceptual model for online informed consent, argued through logical reasoning, and supported by an illustrative example, which brings together the autonomous authorisation (AA) model of informed consent and the theory of planned behaviour (TPB). Accordingly, it constructs a model for online informed consent, rooted in the ethic of autonomy, which employs behavioural theory to facilitate a mode of consent elicitation that prioritises users’ interests and supports ethical information management and marketing practices. The model also introduces a novel concept, the informed attitude, which must be present for informed consent to be valid. It also reveals that, under certain tolerated conditions, it is possible for informed consent to be provided unwillingly and to remain valid: this has significant ethical, information management and marketing implications. I work every day in the Cornell College Library. Usually on the ground floor level, where the fast computers are. The other day I took an early afternoon break, and went up to the second floor reading room to get a copy of The Times and relax. As I passed through the reading room I saw a Japanese student sitting at the long reading table, studying his physics text. He was sitting up straight; the hard back book was standing vertical (...) in front of him on the table, three feet away. The room was pretty silent and the boy was concentrating. I got my paper and took it back to the lower level to read. I read for twenty minutes, then returned to my computer, where I worked for an hour and a half. I finished my online teaching for the day, I packed up my stuff, climbed back up the stairs to the reading room, crossed the room to exit. At that point, tired and stretching, I usually don’t observe much. But this time I noticed the same Japanese student. He was still in the same position, sitting upright looking at his book, balancing it firmly in both hands. He seemed still to be in the same position of attention: nothing had changed, I felt, except the design on the page: a different graph of a different color. Ecological fitness has been suggested to provide a unifying definition of fitness. However, a metric for this notion of fitness was in most cases unavailable except by proxy with differential reproductive success. In this article, I show how differential persistence of lineages can be used as a way to assess ecological fitness. This view is inspired by a better understanding of the evolution of some clonal plants, colonial organisms, and ecosystems. Differential persistence shows the limitation of an ensemblist noncausal understanding (...) of evolution. This article presents a contextualisation of Belgian philosopher and historian of psychiatry and sexuality, Patrick Vandermeersch’s (1946–), unpublished analysis of French philosopher Michel Foucault’s (1926–1984) interpretation of Methodius of Olympus’ (d.ca.311) views on virginity and chastity, in Histoire de la sexualité 4 ( Les aveux de la chair ), published in February 2018 at Gallimard in Paris under the editorship of Frédéric Gros. The article contributes to the reception and the ongoing analyses of Les aveux de la chair by exploring (...) Foucault’s reading while highlighting both the importance of Vandermeersch’s analysis and the sexological-historiographical significance of his broader oeuvre that spans over four decades. Vandermeersch shows that Foucault, as many other commentators of Methodius, did not substantially engage Methodius’ explicit indebtedness and persistent references to Plato (already evident in the title Symposium but especially regarding the Phaedrus ). Platonic homoeroticism is, according to Vandermeersch, as a consequence often too hastily, and therefore problematically, transposed on contexts of female virginity. Likewise, Foucault, when indicating already at the end of Histoire de la sexualité 2 ( L’usage des plaisirs 1984), the particular relevance of homoeroticism in the development of Western sexuality, seemed to adhere to this transposition. Could ‘beautiful boys’ truly be transposed onto ‘female virgins’ without severe sexual-discursive complications? And could Methodius’ encomium of virginity in any way be understood independent of his understanding of the ‘resurrection of the body’, with the integrity of its (virginised) sexual desire intact? These are among Vandermeersch’s valid and challenging questions to both Foucault and his contemporary readership. Contribution: Foucault’s reading of the church- and desert fathers in Histoire de la sexualité 4 ( Les aveux de la chair ) impacts early Medieval philosophy, early Medieval history, church history, patristics, philosophy of religion, psychology of religion and sociology of religion. Since these proximate disciplines are drawn towards Foucault’s text, they may well note its ongoing examinations. Foucault’s direct impact on these disciplines is illustrated in Vandermeersch’s significant analysis of Foucault’s reading of Methodius in Les aveux de la chair. Vandermeersch’s broader oeuvre in philosophy, theology, psychiatry, psychology, psychology of religion and the history of sexuality is concurrently contextualised as of ongoing contemporary importance for these disciplines. The popular iconography of insight casts a thinker as he or she uncoils from a Rodin pose and a bulb that lights a world hitherto hidden. By and large, these features of folk mythology capture and guide how psychologists conduct research on insight: Mental processes — some of which may be unconscious — transform an inceptive abstract representation of the world until it prescribes a fruitful solution to a problem. Yet thinking and problem solving outside the laboratory involve interacting with (...) external resources, and through this interactivity with a material world, solutions are distilled. Still, laboratory work on problem solving pays scant and largely indifferent attention to interactivity: Sometimes problems are presented as riddles or static graphical or diagrammatic images, or sometimes they are accompanied by artefacts that can be manipulated. The research methodology — and indifference to the central role of interactivity in thinking — follows from a deep-seated commitment to mentalism and methodological individualism. However, a thinker is an embodied creature embedded in a physical world: The materiality of external resources and artefacts through which problems manifest themselves inevitably determines a set of action affordances. From a systemic perspective, thinking is traceable along a contingent spatio-temporal itinerary wrought by interactivity and evidenced by changes in the world. (shrink)

Industrial agriculture led to a worldwide homogenization of crops and modes of cultures, but also of landscapes and relationships to the land, threatening at the same time biodiversity and cultural diversity. Developing alternatives to the agro-industrial system inherited from the twentieth century is therefore one of the greatest challenges facing humankind today. This article advocates for the promotion of the French concept of “terroir” as a foundational framework for preserving biocultural diversity, illustrating an ethical way of relating to the land. Already enshrined in European law for three decades and under study at the UNESCO and the FAO, it encourages farmers to adopt ecologically virtuous practices, while ensuring greater economic incomes. Moreover, it enhances the value of their work and their specific relationship with their environment in the long run. La bibliographie Platon 1990-1995 prend concretement la suite du travail bibliographique (couvrant la periode 1950-1990) deja paru dans la revue Lustrum publiee a Gottingen et qui preserve, pour l'essentiel, la presentation materielle. Pour la periode ici consideree (1990-1995), on denombre plus de 70 entreprises d'edition et de traduction, et surtout pres de 1800 travaux d'interpretation, livres ou articles eux-memes publies dans des periodiques, actes de congres, melanges ou recueils. Ces travaux, ecrits en une dizaine de langues differentes, sont ici accompagnes (...) pour la plupart d'une notice et analyses dans un index tres detaille. Le chercheur dispose ainsi d'une sorte de carte geographique lui permettant de s'orienter facilement dans cet immense territoire de litterature secondaire et d'aller rapidement d'un point a un autre en evitant les detours fastidieux et les impasses. Dans ce texte, je propose d’adapter la théorie de l’agentivité collective de List et Pettit de manière à considérer les nations comme des agents. Cet exercice pourrait ainsi conférer un argument supplémentaire aux théories des droits collectifs s’intéressant aux groupes nationaux puisque ces derniers pourront véritablement être reconnus comme des sujets de droits, capables d’autodétermination et de revendications morales. La théorie des droits collectifs de Seymour sera utilisée comme modèle à cet égard. Bien que le libéralisme politique dans lequel s’inscrit (...) Seymour refuse de se prononcer sur des problèmes métaphysiques, il est intéressant d’ouvrir la possibilité conceptuelle que des groupes nationaux soient des agents à part entière. Pour ce faire, il faudra déterminer comment un agent national peut prendre des décisions et comment il peut subir des actions, en plus d’étudier ce que cela pourrait impliquer pour la responsabilité collective des nations. Today, the demand for transparency is omnipresent. In particular, transparency is considered a prerequisite for good governance, for political participation and democracy. On closer inspection, however, transparency proves to be ambivalent. For complete transparency has not yet been achieved anywhere. Moreover, measures to increase transparency can have the opposite effect and stir up mis-trust. Historians are just beginning to discover this topic. The volume aims at elucidating the opportunities and the restrictions of transparency in historical research. It assembles contributions covering (...) European history since the 19th century. The contributors focus on political and cultural history, but include also economic and media history as well as the history of ideas. The aim of this paper is to point out the equivalence between three notions respectively issued from recursion theory, computational complexity and finite model theory. One the one hand, the rudimentary languages are known to be characterized by the linear hierarchy. On the other hand, this complexity class can be proved to correspond to monadic second‐order logic with addition. Our viewpoint sheds some new light on the close connection between these domains: We bring together the two extremal notions by providing (...) a direct logical characterization of rudimentary languages and a representation result of second‐order logic into these languages. We use natural arithmetical tools, and our proofs contain no ingredient from computational complexity. (shrink)

Taiwan has a population of 23 million, of which some 500,000 are Aborigines. Recent conflicts over a national biobank as part of Taiwan's biotechnological industrial development, genetic research on Aboriginal origins, and commercialization of research findings involving Aborigines have raised a number of important ethical conflicts. These ethical conflicts involve on one hand, the importance of researchers' duties, and on the other hand, Aboriginal rights. This paper will go in three steps. First, this paper describes the three cases of ethical (...) violations of Aboriginal rights committed by Taiwanese researchers in the course of their scientific duties. After having given an account of ethical conflicts between research duties and Aboriginal rights, the paper addresses larger ethical issues underlying this Taiwanese research context. Finally, the paper considers if stronger ethical regulation could reconcile Aboriginal rights and research duties. (shrink)

Este artículo analiza escenas de espera mediadas por nuevas tecnologías, como Facebook y WhatsApp, en relaciones erótico-afectivas de jóvenes heterosexuales de clase media del Área Metropolitana de Buenos Aires. Se problematiza cómo estas vías de comunicación facilitan la generación de situaciones de espera atravesadas por el (des)control de la propia subjetividad y sobre el sujeto amado.Utilizamos la metodología de las escenas como recurso para explorar estas experiencias de espera retomando las perspectivas de Vera Paiva y Filomena Gregori. También apelamos a (...) una multiplicidad de fuentes (entrevistas realizadas, y fragmentos de obras de teatro y poemas) para dar cuenta de la importancia que tiene pensar al amor como un bricolage.El trabajo se estructura en tres apartados. En el primero, se analizan las dinámicas y efectos que tienen sobre los sujetos las situaciones de espera vinculadas al amor. En el segundo, se reflexiona sobre los vínculos amorosos entre jóvenes. En el tercero, se problematiza cómo son experimentadas las escenas de amor y espera durante la juventud. (shrink)

The rules presuppose a sharp distinction between proper names and such expressions as the c, a (an) c, some c, any c, and every c, where c represents a common noun. These latter expressions are called quantifiers, and other expressions of the form that c or that c itself, are called quantified terms. Introduction and elimination rules are presented for any, every, some, a (an), and the, (...) and also for any which, every which, and so on, as well as rules for some other concepts. One outcome of these rules is that Every man loves some woman is implied by, but does not imply, Some woman is loved by every man, since the latter is taken to mean the same as Some woman is loved by all men. Frédéric Le Blay René Théophile Hyacinthe Laennec entreprit la traduction des Traités des maladies aiguës et des maladies chroniques du médecin romain Caelius Aurelianus. À partir de l’édition des manuscrits établie en 2009, je propose une analyse interprétative de la démarche du clinicien. Au-delà de la curiosité érudite d’un amoureux des classiques, je cherche à montrer que l’exercice de lecture et de traduction des textes constitutifs d’une histoire de la clinique s’intègre dans la méthode de Laennec et contribue à fonder (...) son épistémologie médicale, à une époque où les pratiques sont soumises à des redéfinitions majeures. Une telle entreprise, qui fait du texte, constituant d’une littérature, une donnée d’expérience en vue du diagnostic, n’est pas sans présenter quelque analogie avec certaines orientations contemporaines. Mathematical continuity, in the technical sense, is a precisely definable mathematical notion which refers to certain properties of numbers and number sequences. The continuity of the physical world, on the other hand, is rather different from mathematical continuity, since it is a directly experienced attribute of nature and does not require, for being understood, any mathematical theory of properties of numbers.

This set is a carefully balanced selection of writings representing some of the most important currents in the thought of city and regional planning during the period 1870-1940 when urban planning emerged as a serious disciplinary field.
