Age Differences in Preferences for Fear-Enhancing Vs. Fear-Reducing News in a Disease Outbreak.Anthony A. Villalba, Jennifer Tehan Stanley, Jennifer R. Turner, Michael T. Vale & Michelle L. Houston - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Older adults prefer positive over negative information in a lab setting, compared to young adults. The extent to which OA avoid negative events or information relevant for their health and safety is not clear. We first investigated age differences in preferences for fear-enhancing vs. fear-reducing news articles during the Ebola Outbreak of 2014. We were able to collect data from 15 YA and 13 OA during this acute health event. Compared to YA, OA were more likely to read the fear-enhancing (...)

    Getting Clear About the “Sign Rule”.Stephen Turner & William C. Wilcox - 1973 - The Sociological Quarterly 15 (4):571-588.
The question of the “validity” of the “sign-rule” has been a source of continuing disagreement among sociologists. Some of the confusion surrounding this question can be dispelled by focusing on the problem of providing satisfactory interpretations for calculi constructed to represent various commentators' versions of acceptable “sign-rule” arguments. It is shown that the formulae of a calculus constructed to represent standard sign rule arguments must be interpreted in terms of propositions asserting that rankings of objects in virtue of one property (...)

The Tragedy of the Liberal Theory of Science.Stephen Turner - 2024 - In Péter Hartl, Science, Faith, Society: New Essays on the Philosophy of Michael Polanyi. Springer Verlag. pp. 277-297.
The Liberal Theory of Science, best articulated by Michael Polanyi, held that science advanced when autonomous scientists followed their best hunches and spontaneously coordinated their efforts as a result of their mutual dependence, in a setting devoted to scientific truth with a tradition supporting it, in a quest for a comprehensive understanding of reality. Pure science was for him an international community with the characteristics of the Republic of Letters of the past. This image of science was an idealization at (...)

Affinity and antagonism: Structuralism, comparison and transformation in pluralist political ontology.Ben Turner - 2019 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 45 (1):27-49.
This article develops a comparative and recursive approach to political ontology by drawing on the ontological turn in anthropology. It claims that if ontological commitments define reality, then the use of ontology by recent pluralist political theorists must undercut pluralism. By charting contemporary anthropology’s rereading of structuralism as part of a plural understanding of ontology, it will be shown that any political ontology places limits on the political, and thus cannot exhaust political experience. This position will be established through an (...)

Adam and eve: A thought experiment.Robin Turner - manuscript
To simplify the relation between desire and morality, and between personal and moral good, we can imagine a world of only two people; let us call them Adam and Eve, for the sake of tradition. This gives us two types of personal good: good for Adam and good for Eve. What is good for Adam (or Eve) is what tends to realise his or her desires in general, and, where desires conflict, realises the desires that are stronger in the long-term. (...)

  21. Against the ‘there can be only one’ argument.Jason Turner - manuscript
Quantifier Pluralism is:the view that there are different ‘kinds of existence’, which are best cashed out as different fundamental quantifiers. Timothy Williamson and Vann McGee have an argument (the ‘There Can Be Only One’ argument) that seems to refute this view. I try to defend quantifier pluralism against it, for reasons I haven’t quite fathomed yet.

Pragmatics, truth and underspecification: towards an atlas of meaning.Ken Turner & Laurence R. Horn (eds.) - 2018 - Boston: Brill.
The concept of meaning, since Frege initiated the linguistic turn in 1884, has been the subject of numerous theories, hypotheses, methodologies and distinctions. One distinction of considerable strategic value relates to the location of meaning: some aspects of meaning can be found in language and are modelled with semantic values of various kinds; some aspects of meaning can be found in communicative processes and are modelled with pragmatic inferences of one sort or another. One hypothesis of great heuristic utility concerns (...)
