Wittgenstein and Hegel: Reevaluation of Difference.Jakub Mácha & Alexander Berg (eds.) - 2019 - Berlin: De Gruyter.
This book brings together for the first time two philosophers from different traditions and different centuries. While Wittgenstein was a focal point of 20th century analytic philosophy, it was Hegel’s philosophy that brought the essential discourses of the 19th century together and developed into the continental tradition in 20th century. This now-outdated conflict took for granted Hegel’s and Wittgenstein’s opposing positions and is being replaced by a continuous progression and differentiation of several authors, schools, and philosophical traditions. The development is (...)

    Wittgenstein und die Begriffe des Psychischen bei Hegel.Alexander Berg - 2020 - Wittgenstein-Studien 11 (1):137-168.
Wittgenstein and the Concepts of Mind in Hegel. Hegel distinguishes three main forms of the (subjective) mind – the soul, the consciousness and the spirit. He seeks to use these concepts to rediscover the meaning of Aristotle’s works on the soul (Περὶ ψυχῆς) and, at the same time, to counteract certain scientistic tendencies within the philosophy of mind. Although Wittgenstein (most likely) was not aware of these Hegelian distinctions, his own use of the concepts of mind exhibits some remarkable similarities (...)

Acute Effects of Mental Recovery Strategies After a Mentally Fatiguing Task.Fabian Loch, Annika Hof zum Berge, Alexander Ferrauti, Tim Meyer, Mark Pfeiffer & Michael Kellmann - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Both daily demands as well as training and competition characteristics in sports can result in a psychobiological state of mental fatigue leading to feelings of tiredness, lack of energy, an increased perception of effort, and performance decrements. Moreover, optimal performance will only be achievable if the balance between recovery and stress states is re-established. Consequently, recovery strategies are needed aiming at mental aspects of recovery. The aim of the study was to examine acute effects of potential mental recovery strategies on (...)

    Wittgensteins Hegel.Alexander Berg - 2021 - Paderborn: Brill / Wilhelm Fink.

    What, If Anything, Is Linguistic Creativity?Alexander Bergs - 2019 - Gestalt Theory 41 (2):173-183.
Summary This paper investigates the nature of creativity in language and linguistics. Following Sampson (2016), it distinguishes between F-creativity (which roughly equals linguistic productivity) and E-creativity (which leads to new and unexpected innovations). These two notions of creativity are discussed on the basis of examples from three different domains: snow cloning, mismatch/coercion, and aberration. It is shown that pure E-creativity may only be found in the case of aberration. Both snow cloning and mismatch/coercion are examples for F-creativity, but to varying (...)

Models of Governance of Online Hate Speech.Alexander Brown - 2020 - Council of Europe.
For some users the current Internet epoch can be considered the Internet of Hate which poses serious human rights concerns. Reflecting the scale and seriousness of the problem, innovations in governance tools for online hate have been initiated by national governments, intergovernmental organisations and Internet intermediaries across Europe in past years. -/- This study maps, explains and critically evaluates these emerging innovations covering three levels: moderation, oversight, and regulatory level. It reviews whether and how these innovations deliver a victim sensitive (...)

Damn Great Empires!: William James and the Politics of Pragmatism.Alexander Livingston - 2016 - New York: Oxford University Press USA.
Damn Great Empires! offers a new perspective on the works of William James by placing his encounter with American imperialism at the center of his philosophical vision. This book reconstructs James's overlooked political thought by treating his anti-imperialist Nachlass -- his speeches, essays, notes, and correspondence on the United States' annexation of the Philippines -- as the key to unlocking the political significance of his celebrated writings on psychology, religion, and philosophy. It shows how James located a craving for authority (...)

  15. Can Interventionists be Neo-Russellians? (Forthcoming).Alexander Reutlinger - unknown
Several proponents of the interventionist theory of causation have recently argued for a neo-Russellian account of causation. The paper discusses two strategies for interventionists to be neo-Russellians. Firstly, I argue that the open systems argument – the main argument for a neo-Russellian account advocated by interventionists – fails. Secondly, I explore and discuss an alternative for interventionists who wish to be neo-Russellians: the statistical mechanical account. Although the latter account is an attractive alternative, it is argued that interventionists are not (...)

Four and a Half Axioms for Finite-Dimensional Quantum Probability.Alexander Wilce - 2012 - In Yemima Ben-Menahem & Meir Hemmo, Probability in Physics. Springer. pp. 281--298.
It is an old idea, lately out of fashion but now experiencing a revival, that quantum mechanics may best be understood, not as a physical theory with a problematic probabilistic interpretation, but as something closer to a probability calculus per se. However, from this angle, the rather special C *-algebraic apparatus of quantum probability theory stands in need of further motivation. One would like to find additional principles, having clear physical and/or probabilistic content, on the basis of which this apparatus (...)

The Phenomenon of Life.Christopher Alexander & Center for Environmental Structure - 2002
Contemporary architecture is increasingly grounded in science and mathematics. Architectural discourse has shifted radically from the sometimes disorienting Derridean deconstruction, to engaging scientific terms such as fractals, chaos, complexity, nonlinearity, and evolving systems. That's where the architectural action is -- at least for cutting-edge architects and thinkers -- and every practicing architect and student needs to become conversant with these terms and know what they mean. Unfortunately, the vast majority of architecture faculty are unprepared to explain them to students, not (...)

Representing humanity in the Age of Enlightenment.Alexander Cook (ed.) - 2013 - Brookfield, Vermont: Pickering & Chatto.
The Enlightenment era saw European thinkers increasingly concerned with what it meant to be human. This was due at least in part to the increasing awareness of human diversity brought by exploration and travel to new domains. This collection of essays traces the concept of 'humanity' through revolutionary politics, feminist biography, portraiture, explorer narratives, libertine and Orientalist fiction, the philosophy of conversation and musicology. Its contributors argue that across these fields, the central philosophical conundrums of the era were reflected, and (...)

Just business: Christian ethics for the marketplace.Alexander Hill - 2018 - Downers Grove: IVP Academic, an imprint of InterVarsity Press.
In this third edition of a popular business ethics textbook, Alec Hill carefully explores the foundational Christian concepts of holiness, justice, and love, showing how some common responses to business ethics fall short of a fully Christian mindset. Updated throughout, this edition includes a new chapter on international business and uses penetrating case studies to clothe principles in concrete business situations.

    Covert moral bioenhancement, public health, and autonomy.Alexander Zambrano - 2019 - Bioethics 33 (6):725-728.
In a recent article in this journal, Parker Crutchfield argues that if moral bioenhancement ought to be compulsory, as some authors claim, then it ought to be covert, i.e., performed without the knowledge of the population that is being morally enhanced. Crutchfield argues that since the aim of compulsory moral bioenhancement is to prevent ultimate harm to the population, compulsory moral bioenhancement is best categorized as a public health issue, and should therefore be governed by the norms and values that (...)

  41. What is so Special About Online (as Compared to Offline) Hate Speech?Alexander Brown - 2018 - Ethnicities 18:297–326.
There is a growing body of literature on whether or not online hate speech, or cyberhate, might be special compared to offline hate speech. This article aims to both critique and augment that literature by emphasising a distinctive feature of the Internet and of cyberhate that, unlike other features, such as ease of access, size of audience, and anonymity, is often overlooked: namely, instantaneousness. This article also asks whether there is anything special about online (as compared to offline) hate speech (...)
