In The Equilibrium Manifold, noted economic scholar and major contributor to the theory of general equilibrium Yves Balasko argues that, contrary to what many textbooks want readers to believe, the study of the general equilibrium model did not end with the existence and welfare theorems of the 1950s. These developments, which characterize the modern phase of the theory of general equilibrium, led to what Balasko calls the postmodern phase, marked by the reintroduction of differentiability assumptions and the (...) application of the methods of differential topology to the study of the equilibrium equation. Balasko's rigorous study demonstrates the central role played by the equilibrium manifold in understanding the properties of the Arrow-Debreu model and its extensions. Balasko argues that the tools of differential topology articulated around the concept of equilibrium manifold offer powerful methods for studying economically important issues, from existence and uniqueness to business cycles and economic fluctuations. After an examination of the theory of general equilibrium's evolution in the hundred years between Walras and Arrow-Debreu, Balasko discusses the properties of the equilibrium manifold and the natural projection. He highlights the important role of the set of no-trade equilibria, the structure of which is applied to the global structure of the equilibrium manifold. He also develops a geometric approach to the study of the equilibrium manifold. Applications include stability issues of adjustment dynamics for out-of-equilibrium prices, the introduction of price-dependent preferences, and aspects of time and uncertainty in extensions of the general equilibrium model that account for various forms of market frictions and imperfections. Special effort has been made at reducing the mathematical technicalities without compromising rigor. This paper deals with the problem of semiogenesis in the light of Saussure’s and Merleau-Ponty’s approaches. Semiogenesis here stands for the emergence of differentiated moments of expression taking form in the semiotic flow through various boundaries and polarities, therefore going far beyond the usual lexico-grammatical picture. Grounded on the Generalized Diacritical Turn of the Merleau-pontian phenomenology, we suggest to set up a critical examination, as well as a few proposals, of : the gestural approach of speech, the negativity of the (...) linguistic identity in Saussurian theory, the paradoxical status of the notion of value, the horizon of a system as a secondary effect of the ‘parole parlante’, meaning seen first as the unfolding of a figural field induced by an essentially ‘incomplete’ linguistic apparatus. The object of this paper is to look at the extent and nature of the uses of analogy during the ªrst century following the so-called scientiªc revolution. Using the research tool provided by JSTOR we systematically analyze the uses of “analog” and its cognates (analogies, analogous, etc.) in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London for the period 1665–1780. In addition to giving the possibility of evaluating quantitatively the proportion of papers explicitly using analogies, this approach makes it (...) possible to go beyond the maybe idiosyncratic cases of Descartes, Kepler, Galileo, and other much studied giants of the so-called Scientiªc Revolution. As a result a classiªcation of types of uses is proposed. Relations between types of analogies and research ªelds are also established. In this paper we are less interested in discussing the “real nature” or “essence” or even the cognitive limitations of analogical thinking than in describing its various uses and different meanings as they changed over the course of a century. In spite of the growing interest witnessed in the study of the relationship between emotion and language, the determination of the emotional valence of sentences, paragraphs or texts has so far attracted little attention. To bridge this gap, a technique based on the emotional aspect of words is presented. In this preliminary study, we have compared the affective tones of the sentences of four texts as perceived by readers, to the values generated by the words that compose the texts. The (...) results support the psychological reality of the affective tones of linguistic units larger than a word, and the possibility of their evaluation through the lexical information. Such information should be. useful for studying the role of emotional interest on text processing and for the analysis of the natural stories produced by people in reaction to stressful events. L'auteur, avec Maître Eckhart, nous entraîne ensuite au-delà des contraires, au-delà même de Dieu et de tous les Absolus que nous imaginons, vers notre essentielle et silencieuse liberté... Un mouvement de fond nous a fait passer d’un univers humaniste composé d’entités séparables à un réel inséparé où tous les phénomènes devenus globalisés sont liés a priori (et non a posteriori), en intra- relation de co-évolution et de co-dépendance. Notre monde élabore une nouvelle condition d’existence, d’où la figure de l’Autre a disparu. Est-ce bien? Est-ce mal? Là n’est pas la question. Cela est.

We first start by clarifying what axiomatizing everything can mean. We then study a famous case of axiomatization, the axiomatization of natural numbers, where two different aspects of axiomatization show up, the model-theoretical one and the proof-theoretical one. After that we discuss a case of axiomatization in a sense opposed to the one of arithmetic, the axiomatization of the notion of order, where the idea is not to catch a specific structure, but a notion. A third mathematical case is then (...) examined, the one of identity, a simple and obvious notion, but that cannot be axiomatized in first-order logic. We then move on to more general notions: the axiomatization of causality and the universe. To end with we deal with an even more tricky question: the axiomatization of reasoning itself. In conclusion we discuss in the light of our investigations the relation between axiomatization and understanding. (shrink)

The differentiation of T Lymphocytes within the thymus is an important biological phenomenon during wich these cell acquire their functions to further control the immune system. Numerous experiments under various conditions have been devised to understand the different mechanisms involved in this complex process. Nevertheless, interpretation of these experiments lead to still contradictory debatable hypotheses. Modelisation of this process through classical simulation methods cannot be envisaged because they are not adapted to modifications of the model structure, which is the point (...) of interest. For these reasons, we proposed a new approach of automatic search for model. The program consists of four independent connected modules : The generator produces model, based on the rationale of formal grammars. Protocol and experimental data are stored in a set of experiments. The simulator using a protocol and a model provides simulated results. Finally, the supervisor by comparing simulated results and experimental data, adapts the model parameters to increase their fit and either chooses a new experiment to explore, or modifies the model structure. Change of the model structure is performed among still unexplored models according to their promise level, which is iteratively evaluated relatively to previously explored models through a proposed model distance. The generator is written in Prolog and the other modules in C++. The architecture of the program allows us to modify or complete a module without changing anything in the other modules. As a consequence, the proposed modeling approach conceived to study T lymphocyte differentiation within the thymus remains independent of this biological phenomenon and can be applied to other biological problems. A simple surveying being excluded, other methods have to be considered, and first the spotting of privileged directions from high points (such as the Puy-de-Dôme, the Montagne de Dun, the Mont Dardon, the hill of Sion-Vaudémont…) allowing a kind of primitive triangulation. It has been noticed that in the obtained patterns, the places known as Mediolanum play a major role. Thus Milano, Mediolanum of (...) the Insubri and Châteaumeillant, home of the Biturigi, can be connected by a straight line across the Mont Blanc and the Montagne de Dun, this last one being the center of several equidistances leading to Meilhan-sur-Garonne, Saintes, Évreux, all of them ancient Mediolanum. Geometrical relations, not less striking, link among others, the Mediolanum de Samoreau (landmark on the bank of the Seine) to Maulain (Haute-Marne), Mâlain (Côte‑d’Or) and Moliens (Oise). Consistant with the Celtic tradition, the sacralization of the central points adds up to a real endeavour of Gallic geodesy, the chronology of which should be elaborated. (shrink)

L’expertise scientifique collective « variétés tolérantes aux herbicides » a mobilisé une vingtaine d’experts de disciplines très différentes autour d’un sujet « sensible ». L’article décrit la façon dont ces experts ont été choisis, les modes d’interaction avec les commanditaires ministériels de l’expertise, le fonctionnement du collectif d’experts, ainsi que les « rendus » de l’expertise. Cet article aborde la question du traitement des avis minoritaires au sein du collectif et pose également la question centrale de la valorisation pour les (...) scientifiques participant du travail fourni en lien avec les attentes des organismes de recherche.These collective expert scientific studies on “herbicide-tolerant varieties” involved some twenty experts from very different disciplines in a “sensitive” topic. This article describes how the experts were chosen, how they interacted with their ministerial clients, how the group of experts functioned and the outcomes of its assessments. It investigates the way minority opinions were handled by the expert group, as well as the crucial question of recognition of the work of the scientists who took part, in relation to expectations among the research organisations. Nous proposons, dans cet article, une analyse communicationnelle des différentes postures de traitement muséal de controverses socioscientifiques pour interroger leur signification en termes d’évolution des modèles mobilisés d’éducation scientifique et d’empowerment des citoyens. Plusieurs travaux montrent que certains centres de sciences privilégient une posture d’externalité en confinant les controverses à leurs dimensions scientifiques. Nous mettons ici l’accent sur des approches alternatives qui intègrent des problématiques controversées. Que ce soit en se positionnant explicitement comme acteur, comme organisateur ou comme témoin du (...) débat public, les centres de sciences traduisent une tendance forte de médiation qui prend acte des reconfigurations contemporaines de la gouvernance des sciences en société. Il nous semble que les expériences dont nous rendons compte intègrent l’évolution des rapports de légitimité entendus en termes de choix scientifiques et techniques et inscrivent une prise de distance vis-à-vis du projet originel de valorisation des sciences.In this article, we offer a communicational analysis of the different stances taken by museums in their treatment of socio-scientific controversies, in order to explore their significance in terms of changing patterns in scientific education and citizens’ empowerment. Several studies have shown that some science centres tend to adopt a distanced stance by confining controversies to their scientific dimensions. Here, we discuss alternative approaches in which the controversial issues are included. Whether explicitly taking up their stance as protagonists, organisers or witnesses to a public debate, science centres display a strong tendency towards mediation, thereby acknowledging contemporary reconfigurations in the governance of science in society. We believe that the experiences reported on here reflect awareness of a change in the balance of legitimating powers in terms of scientific and technical choices, and have effectively distanced themselves from the original idea of highlighting the value of science. In this document, we study a 3-polygraphic translation for the proofs of SKS, a formal system for classical propositional logic. We prove that the free 3-category generated by this 3-polygraph describes the proofs of classical propositional logic modulo structural bureaucracy. We give a 3-dimensional generalization of Penrose diagrams and use it to provide several pictures of a proof. We sketch how local transformations of proofs yield a non contrived example of 4-dimensional rewriting.

On parle alors d’une quadruple rationalité de la révélation: critique, herméneutique, dialogique, spéculative. La fiabilité s’appuie sur les conditions et dispositions du témoignage rendu à la résurrection de Jésus. La crédibilité et l’intelligibilité réunissent une interprétation droite et une compréhension dialectique. La communicabilité suppose de consentir aux normes communes du dialogue mais aussi à une différenciation de ses visées de connaissance. La conceptualité (...) engage une anamnèse systématique de l’économie du salut par la mise en oeuvre d’un espace de compréhension qui transgresse les premières interprétations. Les thèses défendues par Pierre Gisel invitent les théologiens chrétiens à s’interroger sur la place de leur recherche dans l’Église et dans l’Université. La théologie peut-elle se réduire à une théorie de la religion qui relierait à une transcendance indéterminée les phénomènes étudiés par les sciences des religions? C’est là, en vérité, un choix. Il n’est pas plus rationnel que celui d’une herméneutique de la foi, fondée sur l’événement Jésus-Christ et construite dans une large interdisciplinarité. C’est parce que la théologie (...) est confessante et critique qu’elle peut être à la fois ecclésiale et universitaire. À deux modèles exclusifs du statut social de la théologie, l’un intégral, l’autre libéral, on opposera un modèle dialogal, qui exige une implication forte des enseignants-chercheurs. Love lies at the very heart of the Christian faith and its conception of both God and the human being. Nevertheless, the growing field of theological anthropology has yet to fully avail itself of philosophy’s and theology’s renewed attention to the theme of love. The Introduction to this special issue proposes the phrase ‘in the image of Love’ as an invitation to examine the relation between theological anthropology and love throughout the history of Christian thought. Guided by this motif, the (...) issue’s contributors consider ten historical thinkers on love and the human in relation to their philosophical conversation partners at the time. The volume thus has a genealogical dimension, delving into often forgotten layers beneath our current, late modern view of the human/love. It thereby assists future theological anthropological discussions in the much-needed task of both integrating the crucial theme of love and formulating more historically grounded perspectives. This special issue also reveals the ways in which theologians have attempted to respond to the challenge posed by the modern subject while retaining the idea that the human creature is called by Love and called to Love, and provides an alternative to Nygren’s opposition of agape and eros. Le terme de catallaxie a été forgé par F. Hayek pour exprimer l’ordre spontané du marché. Hayek a créé ce terme à partir du mot catallactique, ressorti peu avant de l’oubli par L. Mises, mot venu du verbe grec signifiant « échanger », pour éviter les ambigüités du mot « économie ». Ce papier a pour objet de rechercher la généalogie du terme « catallactique », depuis Richard Whately, qui a été le premier auteur, en 1831, à vouloir rebaptiser « (...) l’économie politique » en « catallactique ». Ce terme était connu et utilisé tout au long du XIX° siècle et on le trouve encore au début du XX° siècle dans divers manuels. L’utilisation de ce terme par Mises, puis Hayek, est donc la reprise d’une tradition remontant à Richard Whately. C’est l’occasion aussi de se pencher sur la vie de Richard Whately, professeur d’économie politique à Oxford jusqu’en 1831, puis archevêque anglican de Dublin. Il a notamment joué un grand rôle dans l’enseignement de cette discipline, en créant 4 000 cours d’économie politique. Un personnage intéressant, un peu trop ignoré aujourd’hui, qui a joué un rôle non négligeable dans la pensée économique. (shrink)
