Refinements and confinements in a two-stage model of memory consolidation.Wagner Ullrich, Gais Steffen & Born Jan - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (6):857-858.
Matthew Walker's model overcomes the unrefined classical concept of consolidation as a unitary process. Presently still confined in its scope to selective data mainly referring to procedural motor learning, the model nonetheless provides a valuable starting point for further refinements, which would be required for a more comprehensive account of different types and aspects of human memory consolidation.

Does Mathematics Need Foundations?Roy Wagner - 2019 - In Stefania Centrone, Deborah Kant & Deniz Sarikaya, Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics: Univalent Foundations, Set Theory and General Thoughts. Springer Verlag. pp. 381-396.
This note opens with brief evaluations of classical foundationalist endeavors – those of Frege, Russell, Brouwer and Hilbert. From there we proceed to some pluralist approaches to foundations, focusing on Putnam and Wittgenstein, making a note of what enables their pluralism. Then, I bring up approaches that find foundations potentially harmful, as expressed by Rav and Lakatos. I conclude with a brief discussion of a late medieval Indian case study in order to show what an “unfounded” mathematics could look like. (...)

Education for Knowing: Theories of Knowledge for Effective Student Building.Paul A. Wagner & Frank K. Fair - 2020 - Rowman & Littlefield Publishers.
The major stakeholder classes in education have three distinct ways by which they judge the quality of knowledge claims. At times this can cause considerable distraction or mis-communication among stakeholders.

Knowing How to Act Well in Time.Peter Wagner - 2020 - Journal of Bioethical Inquiry 17 (4):507-513.
Numerous scholars in the social sciences and humanities have speedily analysed and interpreted the COVID-19-induced social and political crisis. While the commitment to address an urgent topic is to be appreciated, this article suggests that the combination of confidence in the applicability of one’s tools and belief in the certainty of the available knowledge can be counter-productive in the face of a phenomenon that in significant respects is unprecedented. Starting out from the plurality of forms of knowledge that are mobilized (...)

Knowledge on Stage: Scientific Policy Advice.Jost Wagner & Cordula Kropp - 2010 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 35 (6):812-838.
The paper provides a deeper insight into institutionally given opportunities for and limitations to reflexive, dialogue-centered, and risk-sensitive knowledge exchange between scientific experts and agro-political decision makers, especially under the conditions of a significant degree of complexity, far-reaching uncertainties and potential impacts. It focuses on the practical orientations, guiding expectations and selection criteria shaping expertise in processes of science policy consulting. In doing so, two perspectives will be discussed: first the orientation of the knowledge production process by different concepts of (...)

Modernity and capitalism: Conceptual retrieval and comparative-historical analyses.Peter Wagner & David Casassas - 2016 - European Journal of Social Theory 19 (2):159-171.
The terms modernity and capitalism remain in widespread use to characterize contemporary societies, but the distinction between them is much less antagonistic in current social theory than it used to be when a theory of ‘modern society’ was opposed to the theory of ‘late capitalism’. Rather than seeing societies either on an evolutionary trajectory realizing the functionally efficient institutionalization of freedom or as determined by increasing contradictions due to the logics of capital and to class struggle, a key task of (...)

Inescapability and Attainability in the Sociology of Modernity: A Note on the Variety of Modes of Social Theorizing.Peter Wagner & Heidrun Friese - 1999 - European Journal of Social Theory 2 (1):27-44.
It is a background assumption of much of social science - here called modernist social science - that, in principle, there are neither questions that it cannot decline nor answers that cannot be found. Modernist social science does not accept the issues of inescapability and of attainability; they are names for adversaries that need to be fought against. In contrast to modernism in social theory, this article argues that social theory not only cannot succeed in suppressing the questions of the (...)

Evolutionary conservation and ontogenetic emergence of neural algorithms.Hermann Wagner & Dirk Kautz - 1998 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 21 (2):285-286.
Neural algorithms are conserved during evolution. Neurons with different shapes and using different molecular mechanisms can perform the same computation. However, evolutionary conservation of neural algorithms is not sufficient for claiming the realization of an algorithm for a specific computational problem. A plausible scheme for ontogenetic emergence of the structure of the algorithm must also be provided.

Estatutos de autonomía Y fragmentación de la administración. La lealtad federal.Francisco Sosa Wagner - 2008 - Anales de la Cátedra Francisco Suárez 42:73-92.
In Spain the different Statutes of Autonomy are undergoing substantial revision. That revision is being made with repeated invocations of the federal model, without noticing that it would never permit a process in which the federated pieces did not form a whole with the federal pieces. There must first exist an overall agreement on such fundamental questions as competencies, financing, institutional relations, etc. Lacking such an agreement at the political level, the situation must be corrected at the legal level. In (...)

There is at this point no shortage of testimonials regarding the practice of philosophy for children. In addition, there have been a number of studies which give further support to the claim that philosophy for children is a valuable classroom practice. The idea that pre-college instruction in philosophy is beneficial is no longer in doubt, nor is there a significant lack of materials for use in philosophy for children programs. From Lewis Carroll to Matthew Lipman authors constructed texts that go (...)

Johann Arnason’s unanswered question: To what end does one combine historical-comparative sociology with social and political philosophy?Peter Wagner - 2023 - Thesis Eleven 174 (1):3-20.
Johann Arnason’s work combines the most erudite historical-comparative sociology, discussing highly knowledgeably enormous stretches of world-history, with the most subtle social and political philosophy, drawing creatively on the traditions of hermeneutics and phenomenology. Invariably, his works introduce more nuance and sophistication into the analysis of even very well studied socio-historical phenomena. At the same time, he addresses such major phenomena in terms of modernity, democracy and capitalism, agreeing that there often – maybe always – is a combination of empirical, conceptual (...)
