The terms modernity and capitalism remain in widespread use to characterize contemporary societies, but the distinction between them is much less antagonistic in current social theory than it used to be when a theory of ‘modern society’ was opposed to the theory of ‘late capitalism’. Rather than seeing societies either on an evolutionary trajectory realizing the functionally efficient institutionalization of freedom or as determined by increasing contradictions due to the logics of capital and to class struggle, a key task of (...) social theory today is to reconceptualize modernity and capitalism in such a way that the dynamics of historical transformations and the varieties of current socio-political constellations can be more adequately understood. This article contributes to addressing this task, introducing a special issue of the European Journal of Social Theory devoted to ‘modernity and capitalism’. This introduction elaborates a concept of modernity focused on the interpretative self-understanding of societies and a concept of capitalism as a historically specific response to the question of satisfying human material needs. On this conceptual basis, a historical-comparative perspective is taken to analyze transformations in the self-understandings of societies and the institutional changes in organizing the economy related to the former, placing the comparative analysis of societies in the global context of transformations of modernity and capitalism. During the last two centuries, property understood as an exclusive and unlimited dominion became common sense. Before, the idea of property as a fiduciary relationship, which is still present in contemporary social constitutionalism, was closely linked to the view that the exercise of freedom entails the capacity to shape those property rights that channel socioeconomic life. Today, new ways to operationalise such an approach must be found. Este artículo analiza en cuatro tiempos el potencial del acceso incondicional a recursos en la conformación de relaciones productivas libres. En primer lugar, defiende una noción de democracia que exige la presencia de recursos incondicionalmente predistribuidos. En segundo lugar, explora el vínculo entre predistribución y poder de negociación. En tercer lugar, presenta el derecho a la existencia como condición para una cooperación social efectiva que merezca la pena ser cuidada. En cuarto lugar, discute el papel de la renta básica en (...) procesos de nacionalización de la vida económica entendidos como expresión de la voluntad democrática de la ciudadanía. This article analyses in four stages the potential of unconditional access to resources in the conformation of free productive relations. Firstly, it defends a notion of democracy requiring the presence of unconditionally predistributed resources. Secondly, it explores the link between predistribution and bargaining power. Thirdly, it presents the right to existence as a condition for an effective social cooperation worth taking care of. Fourthly, it discusses the role of basic income in processes of nationalisation of economic life understood as the expression of the democratic will of citizenry. (shrink)

There’s no need to draw on lessons from the current crisis to understand that capitalism has always been based on the dispossession of the vast majority. Widerquist’s Independence, Propertylessness, and Basic Income offers a theory of freedom as ‘the power to say no’—or ‘indepentarianism’—and, in the process, thoroughly dissects propertylessness as one of the fundamental mechanisms that, in effect, have shaped modern societies.Unequal access to external resources goes together with private and exclusive property rights, which leaves the many with no (...) means to cover their basic needs. Once in this situation, individuals lose their effective freedom because they are forced to interact with the others—mainly within the realm of work—according to the rules and conditions the others want to impose. The antidote for such social disease is clear: material independence. If all individuals had a set of resources guaranteeing their existence, they could ‘exit’ those social relations that prevent. Otorgar un sentido político consciente a los mecanismos y dispositivos en los que toman cuerpo las políticas sociales es algo que exige considerar la descripción de la vida social desde la que éstas, con mayor o menor conciencia de ello, arrancan. La forma en que la filosofía política contemporánea se ha acercado a la propuesta de la Renta Básica constituye un ejemplo especialmente revelador de dicha cuestión. En este texto se presentará, en primer lugar, el marco conceptual y de análisis (...) de la realidad social desde el que la tradición republicana ha abordado las controvertidas nociones de libertad y de neutralidad. En segundo lugar, se cotejará la perspectiva de la libertad republicana con la noción de libertad que opera en el marco del esquema de la libertad real propuesto por Philippe Van Parijs, esquema que se compromete con un criterio de justicia según el cual es justa aquella sociedad en la que el número de opciones disponibles por parte de las personas más desfavorecidas es mayor. En tercer lugar, se planteará la necesidad de una aproximacióna la propuesta de la RB que exija una categorización de dichas opciones que priorice aquellas que, aun siendo, quizás, menores, confieran a los individuos mayores garantías de seguridad en la definición y desarrollo de sus planes de vida propios sin interferencias arbitrarias por parte de otros agentes. En esta dirección, se propondrá una aproximación normativa a la propuesta de la Renta Básica que, de acuerdo con la tradición republicana, asuma que aquellas instancias susceptibles de ser consideradas libres -o no- son, no ya las decisiones en sí mismas, sino los individuos que, encuadrados socio-institucionalmente, han de tomarlas. Finalmente, se señalarán los efectos que el manejo de la perspectiva republicana tiene en el diseñopolítico- institucional de la propuesta de la Renta Básica en el marco de las sociedades de mercado en las que vivimos.
