    This paper challenges a recent argument of Bird’s, which involves imagining that Réné Blondlot’s belief in N-rays was true, in favour of the view that scientific progress should be understood in terms of knowledge rather than truth. By considering several variants of Bird’s thought-experiment, it shows that the semantic account of progress cannot be so easily vanquished. A key possibility is that justification is only instrumental in, and not partly constitutive of, progress.

    Cet article étudie le renouvellement de sens que Nietzsche fait subir à la notion de scepticisme. Il part de la double appréciation déroutante du scepticisme grec, loué pour la probité intellectuelle de son ephexis et critiqué simultanément comme une forme de nihilisme de type bouddhiste préservant les valeurs ascétiques, pour montrer que le scepticisme évoqué par la formule « les grands esprits sont des sceptiques.     Do children derive different benefits from group collaboration at different ages? In the present study, 183 children from two age groups took part in a class quiz as members of a group, or individually. In some groups, cohesiveness was made salient by awarding prizes to the top performing groups. In other groups, prizes were awarded to the best performing individuals.
