Ce texte retrace le chemin qui a amené les auteurs à investir l’espace public. Pensée comme un espace inclusif où le citoyen peut se réapproprier son pouvoir par la discussion, l’écoute et l’autoéducation au vivre ensemble, l’occupation se définit d’abord par sa pratique. Ce (...) sont en effet des moyens alternatifs, et novateurs qui sont mobilisés pour faire face à la crise environnementale, politique, économique et sociale que le système économique capitaliste néolibéral exacerbe. Cet article s'intéresse à la manière avec laquelle les résultats aux référendums français et néerlandais sur la Constitution européenne sont interprétés dans la presse anglo-canadienne et franco-québécoise à l'aune des récentes crises constitutionnelles. Les quotidiens ont ajusté leur « focale médiatique » en fonction de leur compréhension locale de l'événement, de sa mise en marché, de son usage politique, voire de la constitution de communautés émotionnelles. Ainsi, les journaux anglo-canadiens cantonneraient l'événement au temps très court de l'actualité quotidienne, alors que (...) les franco-québécois privilégieraient une trame temporelle plus longue.This article looks at the way in which the results to French and Dutch referenda on the European Constitution are interpreted in the Anglo-Canadian and Franco-Quebec in the light of recent constitutional crises. The adjusted their daily "Focal media" according to their local understanding of the event, its marketing, its political use, and even the formation of emotional communities. Le « journalisme citoyen » en ligne est issu des phénomènes d'autopublication sur Internet. Il propose une nouvelle représentation du public comme acteur social capable d'assurer les couverures médiatiques aux côtés du journaliste. Toutefois, la production de nouveaux discours ne se fait pas sans contradictions, qui interrogent l'évolution du journalisme à ses marges. À partir des expérimentations de Place publique et d'AgoraVox, l'article examine l'instrumentalisation de la figure du public dans une reconfiguration de l'espace journalistique.The "citizen journalism" is online from (...) the phenomena of self-publishing on the Internet. It proposes a new representation of the public as a social actor capable of couverures the media alongside the journalist. However, the production of new discourse is not without contradictions, which question the evolution of journalism at its margins. " Que reste-t-il de l'Etat? ". " Pas grand-chose " serait-on tenté de dire, tant on ne cesse de répéter que l'Etat est " en crise " et qu'il est entré dans un " processus de désintégration ". Certes, il existe d'évidents mouvements d'émiettement des compétences autrefois concentrées au niveau de l'Etat central. Elles sont redistribuées au profit, d'un côté, d'organisations mondiales ou européennes, supra- et inter-étatiques, de l'autre, d'entités publiques subétatiques comme, en Belgique, les Communautés et Les Régions. Certes, (...) on assiste aussi à des mouvements tangibles de retrait de l'Etat dans la gestion collective de pans importants d'activités sociales, que ce soit au profit du " marché ", de la " science " ou de la " société civile ". Mais mesure-t-on bien l'ampleur et la nature de ces processus et est-on sûr qu'ils ne sont pas compensés par d'autres qui iraient dans le sens d'un redéploiement de l'Etat? C'est à l'analyse de ces différents mouvements de repli, de redéploiement et de continuation de l'action de l'Etat dans la société actuelle qu'est consacré le présent ouvrage. Au départ de la question : " Où en est l'Etat aujourd'hui? ", cet ouvrage collectif, issu d'un congrès de politologues qui s'est tenu à l'Université Libre de Bruxelles en 2002, traite de l'avenir du mode institutionnel par lequel les êtres humains ont entendu assurer, pendant des siècles en Occident, la production de cadres communs à leur existence individuelle et collective. Résumé Les références de Wilfrid Sellars à Hegel dans Empirisme et philosophie de l’esprit sont aussi célèbres qu’allusives. Les héritiers de Sellars, menant campagne contre le « mythe du donné », ont souvent tenté de préciser les contours de cette interprétation de Hegel comme « grand adversaire de ‘l’immédiateté’ ». Dans le présent article, je me propose de présenter deux tentatives majeures d’interprétation post-sellarsienne de Hegel : celles de Richard Rorty et Robert Brandom. Tandis que Rorty opère une « kuhnianisation (...) » de Hegel pour en faire, une fois son idéalisme mis de côté, l’incarnation du narrateur ironiste et historiciste des grands changements de vocabulaires du monde occidental, Brandom assume quant à lui jusqu’à un certain point l’idéalisme de Hegel en en reformulant les thèses principales conformément aux postulats de sa pragmatique inférentialiste. Dans cette perspective, la normativité rationnelle est considérée comme un ensemble de pratiques sociales d’engagements et d’autorisations inférentiels enchâssées dans des rapports de reconnaissance. Toutefois, aucun des deux penseurs ne parvient à articuler de manière satisfaisante les deux plans dont Hegel puis Sellars ont mis en évidence l’étroite solidarité : l’intersubjectivité de l’échange de raisons et l’objectivité des institutions sociales. Nous distinguons ordinairement le corps de l’esprit : nous parvenons aisément à concevoir (même si nous n’y croyons pas forcément) que notre esprit survive à notre corps, ou qu’il aille se loger dans un autre corps. Il y a là, pensons-nous, une véritable différence de nature. Mais bien que cette distinction nous soit très intuitive, dès lors que nous cherchons à spécifier le critère sur lequel elle repose, elle se dérobe. Tout se passe comme si nous n’avions aucun mal à (...) classer les choses d’un côté ou de l’autre de la frontière qui sépare le corps de l’esprit, mais que nous ne parvenions pas à la définir précisément. A quel critère obéissons- nous en effet lorsque nous opérons une bipartition entre phénomènes mentaux et phénomènes physiques dans un ensemble tel que : une croyance, le téléphone du salon, un aimant, l’envie d’un florentin, le Mont Blanc, la vue du Mont Blanc, un claquement de porte, un regret, le bruit d’un moulin, la connaissance du théorème de Thalès, la jalousie, la couleur de la neige, le souvenir d’un citronnier à Menton ? Nous serions probablement tous d’accord pour ranger du côté des phénomènes physiques le téléphone du salon, le claquement de porte, la couleur de la neige, l’aimant, le Mont Blanc et le bruit du moulin ; et du côté des phénomènes mentaux la croyance, l’envie d’un florentin, le regret, la vue du Mont Blanc, la connaissance du théorème de Thalès, la jalousie et le souvenir d’un citronnier de Menton. Mais nous divergerions probablement si nous avions à formuler le critère d’après lequel nous avons opéré cette bipartition. La première chose à faire est donc de tenter d’examiner les critères qui peuvent nous permettre d’établir la distinction entre le corps et l’esprit afin de retenir le plus pertinent. Dans la mesure du possible, celui-ci devra être à la fois informatif (ne pas nous renvoyer simplement à la distinction intuitive que nous pratiquons quotidiennement) et neutre (par exemple être acceptable aussi bien par un dualiste que par un matérialiste). Une fois cette distinction établie, nous serons en mesure de poser trois problèmes. (shrink)

Le politique a tendance à découper le territoire en tranches catégorielles de taille (espaces ruraux, villes petites et moyennes, métropoles) ou binaires (espaces « périphériques », métropoles « incluses ») de manière à en servir les clientèles au gré des opportunités. Est-ce la fin de la paix territoriale et l’activation de clivages sociaux par le truchement du territoire? Voilà pour le politique. Du côté des scientifiques, le besoin d’un cadre d’analyse comparable dans le temps pousse de nombreux statisticiens et chercheurs (...) à mobiliser les mêmes catégories, à la recherche du mythique « territoire pertinent ». Or, le territoire est fait de flux, de liens, d’interdépendances entre échelles et acteurs. Il connait par ailleurs une grande diversité. Il est alors nécessaire de construire des cadres d’analyse globaux et des idéaux-types pour caractériser les différentes trajectoires spatiales et éclairer l’action publique. (shrink)

Publication de maisons de Lato, dégagées en 1970-1971. Elles sont situées sur l'une des sept terrasses échelonnées le long des deux côtés de la rue qui descend de l'agora vers la porte Ouest de la ville. Ces habitations très simples sont constituées d'une pièce et d'une cour, généralement dotée d'une citerne. À l'exception de la maison V, où fut mise au jour une baignoire, ainsi qu'un riche matériel céramique du milieu du IIe s. av. J.-C, les autres maisons étaient vides (...) lors de leur découverte ; il est donc difficile d'en préciser la datation dans le cadre de l'époque hellénistique. On reste particulièrement impressionné devant le renforcement continu du système de dé fense de l'accès vers la rue, qui se manifeste par le renforcement des murs, la fermeture de certaines portes et l'élaboration d'un système de chicane. L'ensemble évoque un paragraphe des Lois de Platon, qui prône l'incorporation des habitations particulières dans la fortification d'une ville. C'est en fait un rempart de ce genre que les habitants de Lato vont construire, avec la superbe porte Ouest. (shrink)

L’article porte sur la notion de totalité dans la critique par Pierre de Jean Olivi des relations entre l’âme et le corps dans la psychologie thomiste. En critiquant Thomas d’Aquin, Olivi s’attaque à un point faible de sa psychologie : d’un côté, Thomas conçoit l’âme comme le principe de la vie étroitement connecté au corps humain, et de l’autre, il conçoit l’âme intellective comme un être subsistant par lui-même. Selon Olivi, l’unique manière selon laquelle l’âme est censée être essentiellement présente (...) au corps selon Thomas d’Aquin ne peut convenir à ces deux supposées propriétés de l’âme : information du corps et subsistance. Olivi abandonne donc le holenmérisme thomiste, selon lequel l’âme humaine est essentiellement présente comme un tout dans chaque partie du corps. Un résultat important du traitement olivien de la totalité est sa conception anti-aristotélicienne de l’intellect : Olivi le conçoit comme un être susceptible de plus et de moins et de mouvement, selon un mode semblable à celui des corps physiques. Cette définition d’une anima intellectiva pouvant se mouvoir par elle-même, et par conséquent libre, est au cœur d’une éthique volontariste. (shrink)

Of all the things we do and say, most will never be repeated or reproduced. Once in a while, however, an idea or a practice generates a chain of transmission that covers more distance through space and time than any individual person ever could. What makes such transmission chains possible? For two centuries, the dominant view was that humans owe their cultural prosperity to their powers of imitation. In this view, modern cultures exist because the people who carry them are (...) gifted at remembering, storing and reproducing information. How Traditions Live and Die proposes an alternative to this standard view. What makes traditions live is not a general-purpose imitation capacity. Cultural transmission is partial, selective, often unfaithful. Some traditions live on in spite of this, because they tap into widespread and basic cognitive preferences. These attractive traditions spread, not by being better retained or more accurately transferred, but because they are transmitted over and over. This theory is used to shed light on various puzzles of cultural change and to explain the special relation that links the human species to its cultures. Morin combines recent work in cognitive anthropology with new advances in quantitative cultural history, to map and predict the diffusion of traditions. This book is both an introduction and an accessible alternative to contemporary theories of cultural evolution. (shrink)

This chapter defends an axiological theory of pain according to which pains are bodily episodes that are bad in some way. Section 1 introduces two standard assumptions about pain that the axiological theory constitutively rejects: (i) that pains are essentially tied to consciousness and (ii) that pains are not essentially tied to badness. Section 2 presents the axiological theory by contrast to these and provides a preliminary defense of it. Section 3 introduces the paradox of pain and argues that since (...) the axiological theory takes the location of pain at face value, it needs to grapple with the privacy, self-intimacy and incorrigibility of pain. We argue that there is a tension between two monistic claims that are the core of recent work in epistemic consequentialism. The first is a form of monism about epistemic value, commonly known as veritism: accuracy is the sole final objective to be promoted in the epistemic domain. The other is a form of monism about a class of epistemic scoring rules: that is, strictly proper scoring rules are the only legitimate measures of inaccuracy. These two monisms, we argue, are (...) in tension with each other. If only accuracy has final epistemic value, then there are legitimate alternatives to strictly proper scoring rules. Our argument relies on the way scoring rules are used in contexts where accuracy is rewarded, such as education. (shrink)

This paper defends a realist account of the composition of Newtonian forces, dubbed ‘residualism’. According to residualism, the resultant force acting on a body is identical to the component forces acting on it that do not prevent each other from bringing about its acceleration. Several reasons to favor residualism over alternative accounts of the composition of forces are advanced. (i) Residualism reconciles realism about component forces with realism about resultant forces while avoiding any threat of causal overdetermination. (ii) Residualism provides (...) a systematic semantics for the term ‘force’ within Newtonian mechanics. (iii) Residualism allows us to precisely apportion the causal responsibility of each component force in the ensuing acceleration. (iv) Residualism handles special cases such as null forces, single forces, and antagonistic forces in a natural way. (v) Residualism provides a neat picture of the causal powers of forces: each force essentially has two causal powers⎯the power to bring about accelerations (sometimes together with other co-directionnal forces) and the power to prevent other forces from doing so⎯exactly one of which is manifested at a time. (vi) Residualism avoids commitment to unobservable effects of forces: forces cause either stresses (tensile or compressive) or accelerations. (shrink)

This discussion paper responds to two recent articles in Biology and Philosophy that raise similar objections to cultural attraction theory, a research trend in cultural evolution putting special emphasis on the fact that human minds create and transform their culture. Both papers are sympathetic to this idea, yet both also regret a lack of consilience with Boyd, Richerson and Henrich’s models of cultural evolution. I explain why cultural attraction theorists propose a different view on three points of concern for our (...) critics. I start by detailing the claim that cultural transmission relies not chiefly on imitation or teaching, but on cognitive mechanisms like argumentation, ostensive communication, or selective trust, whose evolved or habitual function may not be the faithful reproduction of ideas or behaviours. Second, I explain why the distinction between context biases and content biases might not always be the best way to capture the interactions between culture and cognition. Lastly, I show that cultural attraction models cannot be reduced to a model of guided variation, which posits a clear separation between individual and social learning processes. With cultural attraction, the same cognitive mechanisms underlie both innovation and the preservation of traditions. (shrink)

Sixteen years after Kim’s seminal paper offering a welcomed analysis of the emergence concept, I propose in this paper a needed extension of Kim’s work that does more justice to the actual diversity of emergentism. Rather than defining emergence as a monolithic third way between reductive physicalism and substance pluralism, and this through a conjunction of supervenience and irreducibility, I develop a comprehensive taxonomy of the possible varieties of emergence in which each taxon—theoretical, explanatory and causal emergence—is properly identified and (...) defined. This taxonomy has two advantages. First, it is unificatory in the sense that the taxa it contains derive from a common unity principle, which consequently constitutes the very hallmark of emergentism. Second, it can be shown that the emergence taxa it contains are able to meet the challenges that are commonly considered as being the hot topics on the emergentists’ agenda, namely the positivity, the consistency and the triviality/liberality challenges. The thesis defended, the “guise of the ought”, is that the formal objects of desires are norms (oughts to be or oughts to do) rather than values (as the “guise of the good” thesis has it). It is impossible, in virtue of the nature of desire, to desire something without it being presented as something that ought to be or that one ought to do. This view is defended by pointing to a key distinction between values and norms: positive and (...) negative norms (obligation and interdiction) are interdefinable through negation; positive and negative values aren’t. This contrast between the norms and values, it is argued, is mirrored, within the psychological realm, by the contrast between the desires and emotions. Positive and negative desires are interdefinable through negation, but positive and negative emotions aren’t. The overall, Meinongian picture suggested is that norms are to desires what values are to emotions. (shrink)

Can we maintain that purple seems composed of red and blue without giving up the impenetrability of the red and blue parts that compose it? Brentano thinks we can. Purple, according to him, is a chessboard of red and blue tiles which, although individually too small to be perceived, are together indistinctly perceived within the purple. After a presentation of Brentano’s solution, we raise two objections to it. First, Brentano’s solution commits him to unperceivable intentional objects (the chessboard’s tiles). Second, (...) his chessboard account fails in the end to explain the phenomenal spatial continuity of compound colours. We then sketch an alternative account, which, while holding fast to the phenomenal compoundedness of the purple and to the impenetrability of component colours, avoids introducing inaccessible intentional objects and compromising on the continuity of the purple. According to our proposal, instead of being indistinctly perceived spatial parts of the purple, red and blue are distinctly perceived non- spatial parts of it. (shrink)

Recently there has been a strong movement towards reflections about the “geography of reason,” especially among philosophers who deal with postcolonial thinking. There is also a renewed interest among different schools of thought, both analytical and continental, in the ways our “life world,” or “embodiment,” or “situated cognition,” shape our minds and eventually the philosophy we do. As a result, we have seen some recent publications on the nature and import of the concept of “place” by authors such as Edward (...) Casey, Jeff Malpas, and Bruce Janz. In Philosophy in an African place, Bruce Janz introduces the concept of “philosophy-in-place” with the question as to what it is to do philosophy in a particular context of lived experience or, more specifically, what it is to do philosophy in an African place. This paper expands on Janz's “philosophy-in-place” by developing what will be called a “philosophy through place.” It starts with Janz's discussion of the problem of placing philosophy and a philosophy-in-place. Then it attempts to develop an argument for a “philosophy through place” and its implications for considering the place of philosophy in Africa and the challenge it poses to philosophy. (shrink)

I present and defend Reinach's theory of ownership according to which, prior to the positive law, one finds a distinction between possession, ownership and property rights. Ownership is not a bundle of positive rights, but a primitive natural relation that grounds the absolute right to behave as one wishes towards the thing one owns. In reply to some objections raised against it, I argue that Reinach's theory of property is morally and politically non-committal; and that it in fact has the (...) ressources for dealing with the vexing issue of the origin of ownership. When individuals hold expectations about other people, they can elicit from these targets behaviors that are consistent with their expectations, even if these expectations are independent of the target’s real characteristics. In this paper, we consider the role that this phenomenon, known as behavioral confirmation, plays in shaping the social perceptions of perceivers, targets, and outside observers. As well, we address the value of laboratory research on behavioral confirmation for understanding the dynamics and outcomes of social interactions in naturally occurring (...) settings. Building on these considerations, we then examine the role of behavioral confirmation phenomena in shaping intergroup relations, with particular reference to delineating conditions in which such phenomena serve to preserve these relations. Based on this analysis, we suggest that dyadic confirmation phenomena are likely to occur in naturally occurring settings and may contribute to the maintenance and perpetuation of social stereotypes and societal structures. Rom Harré thinks that the Emergence–Reduction debate, conceived as a vertical problem, is partly ill posed. Even if he doesn’t wholly reject the traditional definition of an emergent property as a property of a collection but not of its components, his point is that this definition doesn’t exhaust all the dimensions of emergence. According to Harré there is another kind (or dimension) of emergence, which we may call—somewhat paradoxically—“horizontal emergence”: two properties of a substance are horizontally emergent relative to each (...) other if they cannot be displayed in the same conditions. Contrary to vertical emergence, horizontal emergence is a symmetrical relation. Harré endorses horizontal emergentism. I argue that this position faces a principled difficulty: it makes it impossible to bind different horizontally emergent discourses in an interesting way. Physics and biology for example become “island” discourses, each speaking of a distinct kind of entities. The only way to ensure that two different discourses can relate to the same entity is to reintroduce verticality into the picture. (shrink)

Urban agriculture is an important source of food and income throughout Africa. The majority of cultivators on the continent are women who use urban agriculture to provide for their family. Much research on urban agriculture in Africa focuses on the material benefits of urban agriculture for women, but a smaller body of literature considers its social and psychological empowering effects. The present study seeks to contribute to this debate by looking at the ways in which urban agriculture empowers women on (...) the Cape Flats, a region of Cape Town where urban agriculture is supported by nongovernmental organisations. Based on interviews with cultivators, the findings show that NGO-run urban agriculture projects not only aid food security, but also help women to develop supportive networks that unlock benefits across the personal, social and economic spectrum. In this paper I try to go a stepfurther and argue that there are circumstances when pains canbecome objects even while they remain modes of experience.By analysing cases of extreme pain as presented by Scarry,Sartre, Wiesel, Grahek and Wall, I attempt to show thatintense physical pain may evolve into a force that, likeimagination, can make our most intense state of experiencebecome (...) a mental object.
