The Managed Hand: The Commercialization of Bodies and Emotions in Korean Immigrant–Owned Nail Salons.Miliann Kang - 2003 - Gender and Society 17 (6):820-839.
This ethnographic study of service interactions in Korean immigrant women–owned nailsalons in New York City introduces the concept “body labor” to designate a type of gendered work that involves the management of emotions in body-related service provision. The author explores variation in the performance of body labor caused by the intersection of the gendered processes of beauty service work with the racialized and class-specific service expectations of diverse customers. The study examines three distinct patterns of service provision that are shaped (...)

In Search of Contextualised Training Models for Chinese Christian Diaspora in Britain.Kang-San Tan - 2011 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 28 (1):29-41.
The paper is a critique of traditional and formal models of theological education that historically have developed in the West and are generally adopted by Asian theological schools in Asia. Globalisation and the emergence of Asian Diasporas presented new problems and opportunities for rethinking appropriate models of contextual training. Building on works by Robert Banks, Ian Stackhouse and David Kelsey, the paper will explore contextual models for the Chinese Christian Diasporas in Britain, and suggest some contributions for the renewal of (...)

As the world struggles through the COVID‐19 pandemic, we should also be asking what systems‐level measures will be needed to prevent this or even worse disasters from happening in the future. We argue that the pandemic is merely one of potentially myriad and pleiomorphic future global disasters generated by the same underlying dynamical system. We explain that there are four broad but easily identifiable systemic, pathologically networked conditions that are hurtling civilization toward potential self‐destruction. As long as these conditions are (...)

Byun et al. describe how deaf signers deal with communication problems in first encounters with signers of different languages. They show that the basic Conversation Analytic repair mechanisms for dealing with verbal troubles are largely reproduced in gesture and sign, including details of turn‐taking structure, timing and form. This underlines the role of repair as a basic resource for linguistic and interactional creativity across modalities.

Attachment patterns of homeless youth: Choices of stress and confusion.Min Ju Kang & Michael Glassman - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (1):32-33.
This commentary explores the reproductive strategies and attachment patterns among homeless youths. Del Giudice's integrated evolutionary model is applied to a homeless youth population that must function in ecological settings of constant high risk and stress. Different reproductive needs result in different patterns of high-risk behaviors. Intervention considering the sex differences, life history, and early caregiver–child relationships is suggested.

Between Christianity and Asian Traditions in 20th-Century China: The Contributions of Wu Leichuan.Kang Ji Yeon - 2016 - Journal for the Study of Religions and Ideologies 15 (45):143-161.
This article focuses on the religious hybridity propagated by Wu Leichuan, a reformative Christian thinker from China. The article centers on the question of how to understand the social praxis as well as the interaction and religious hybridity involving modern Western thoughts and traditional Asian thoughts. Wu’s Christian thought contains elements of social praxis that purport to understand sufferings of common people and thus differs from existing dominant Christian theology characterized by materialism and secular success. Wu claims that “benevolence” is (...)

As symbols of adaptability and transformation, together with qualities of vigilance and intelligence, we argue the relevance of dragons for spatial planning in China. We develop a metaphorical concept – the green dragon – for grasping the condition of contemporary Chinese societies and for facilitating the development of theories and practices of spatial planning which are able to face the challenges of rapid change. We ask Chinese scholars and spatial planners to liberate Deleuzian potential for strategic spatial planning in a (...)

Multiscale Efficient Channel Attention for Fusion Lane Line Segmentation.Kang Liu & Xin Gao - 2021 - Complexity 2021:1-12.
The use of multimodal sensors for lane line segmentation has become a growing trend. To achieve robust multimodal fusion, we introduced a new multimodal fusion method and proved its effectiveness in an improved fusion network. Specifically, a multiscale fusion module is proposed to extract effective features from data of different modalities, and a channel attention module is used to adaptively calculate the contribution of the fused feature channels. We verified the effect of multimodal fusion on the KITTI benchmark dataset and (...)

Workaholism in Korea: Prevalence and Socio-Demographic Differences.Sudol Kang - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
This study has two objectives – to provide a Korean form of the workaholism analysis questionnaire, and to analyze workaholic tendencies in South Korea by using a nationally representative data. Using 4,242 samples (2,497 men and 1,745 women), exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to develop a Korean form (K-WAQ). The four-factor structure of K-WAQ in this study seemed to adequately represent the underlying dimensions of work addiction in Korea. The study also analyzed the prevalence of workaholism among Koreans (...)

Gender Stereotyping by Location, Female Director Appointments and Financial Performance.Ying Li Compton, Sok-Hyon Kang & Zinan Zhu - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 160 (2):445-462.
We investigate whether female board representation and firms’ financial performance are related and whether the relationship differs for firms located in more prejudicial environments. As a proxy for prejudicial environment, we use two geographical indicators: whether a firm is headquartered in a conservative “red” state or in a liberal “blue” state and whether the firm is located in regions where residents possess more stereotypical attitudes about gender equality. We find that both financial performance and female board representation are lower for (...)

  43. The Uncultivated Man and the Weakness of the Ideal in Classical Chinese Philosophy.Kang Chan - 2000 - Dissertation, Harvard University
The Chinese philosophical tradition aims at a departure from the imperfect reality for the sake of the ideal. But it is also clear to the Chinese philosophers that most people would not follow their footsteps in discarding reality and seeking the ideal. The weakness of the ideal in its incapacity to change the uncultivated man defines a common thread of philosophical thinking in China, and constitutes a bitter truth which these philosophers do not make explicit. Seven philosophers from the fifth (...)

Aesthetics and Marxism: Chinese Aesthetic Marxists and Their Western Contemporaries.Kang Liu - 2000 - Duke University Press.
Although Chinese Marxism—primarily represented by Maoism—is generally seen by Western intellectuals as monolithic, Liu Kang argues that its practices and projects are as diverse as those in Western Marxism, particularly in the area of aesthetics. In this comparative study of European and Chinese Marxist traditions, Liu reveals the extent to which Chinese Marxists incorporate ideas about aesthetics and culture in their theories and practices. In doing so, he constructs a wholly new understanding of Chinese Marxism. Far from being secondary (...)

Use of Urban Residential Community Parks for Stress Management During the COVID-19 Lockdown Period in China.Ni Kang, Simon Bell, Catharine Ward Thompson, Mengmeng Zheng, Ziwei Xu & Ziwen Sun - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
During the pandemic lockdown period, residents had to stay at home and increased stress and other mental health problems have been associated with the lockdown period. Since most public parks were closed, community parks within gated residential areas became the most important green space in Chinese cities, and the use of such space might help to reduce the residents’ stress levels. This study aimed to investigate to what extent urban residents in China used community parks, engaged in outdoor activity during (...)

    A Semi-supervised Learning-Based Diagnostic Classification Method Using Artificial Neural Networks.Kang Xue & Laine P. Bradshaw - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
The purpose of cognitive diagnostic modeling is to classify students' latent attribute profiles using their responses to the diagnostic assessment. In recent years, each diagnostic classification model makes different assumptions about the relationship between a student's response pattern and attribute profile. The previous research studies showed that the inappropriate DCMs and inaccurate Q-matrix impact diagnostic classification accuracy. Artificial Neural Networks have been proposed as a promising approach to convert a pattern of item responses into a diagnostic classification in some research (...)
