On the Seam: Philosophy with Palestinian Girls in an East Jerusalem Village as a Way of a Pedagogy of Searching.Arie Kizel & Marlene Abdallah - 2017 - Journal of Philosophy in Schools 4 (1):27 - 49.
The ‘Marwa’ elementary school (pseudonym) – an Israeli public school on the border between Israel and the Palestinian Authority – is a unique educational institution in that, despite being not religious, it only accepts from Grade 1 through to Grade 6 girls. Several years ago, the principal decided to implement a Philosophy with Children (PwC) programme as an alternative pedagogy. This paper surveys how the educational faculty regarded the introduction of this curriculum and how it contributed towards the development of (...)

Consanguineous marriage in the capital city sana’a, yemen.Abdallah Ahmed Gunaid, Nuria Ali Hummad & Khaled Abdallah Tamim - 2004 - Journal of Biosocial Science 36 (1):111-122.
Consanguineous marriage is traditionally common throughout the Eastern Mediterranean region, especially in the mainly Muslim countries. To date, there is little information on consanguinity in Yemen. The aim of this study was to ascertain the rate of consanguineous marriage and average coefficient of inbreeding in Sanaa City by means of a multi-stage random sampling technique. A total of 1050 wives and husbands were interviewed on consanguinity in their households. The total incidence of consanguinity was 44·7% (95% CI 41·7–47·7%) with first-cousin (...)

Developing a model of Islamic psychology and psychotherapy: Islamic theology and contemporary understandings of psychology.Abdallah Rothman - 2021 - New York: Routledge.
At a time when there is increasing need to offer psychotherapeutic approaches which accommodate clients' religious and spiritual beliefs, and acknowledge the potential for healing and growth offered by religious frameworks, this book explores psychology from an Islamic paradigm and demonstrates how Islamic understandings of human nature, the self, and the soul can inform an Islamic psychotherapy. Drawing on a qualitative, grounded theory analysis of interviews with Islamic scholars and clinicians, this unique volume distils complex religious concepts to reconcile Islamic (...)

    The Discipline of Culturology: A New 'Ready-Made Thought' for Russia.Marlène Laruelle - 2004 - Diogenes 51 (4):21-36.
‘Culturology’ is an integral, often compulsory, part of Russian university courses; the discipline has largely replaced chairs in Marxist-Leninism and dialectical materialism, and bookshops are full of texts on the subject. This article is based on analysis of more than ten university textbooks recommended to first-year students. Marlène Laruelle examines why culturology has become so important, the place claimed for it within the human sciences, and what it means for changing Russian ideas of identity and nation.

  10. Actions Necessary to Prevent Childhood Obesity: Creating the Climate for Change.Marlene B. Schwartz & Kelly D. Brownell - 2007 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 35 (1):78-89.
After years of near total neglect, the problem of childhood obesity is now in the limelight. Terms like “epidemic,” “crisis,” and “emergency” are used frequently when describing the trend. Progress is defined with strong language and fueled by statistics such as the observation that this generation of children will be the first to live shorter lives than their parents. Multi-disciplinary journals such as the Journal of Law, Medicine & Ethics have dedicated symposiums to the issue, and conferences have been convened (...)

Flexible Goals Require that Inflexible Perceptual Systems Produce Veridical Representations: Implications for Realism as Revealed by Evolutionary Simulations.Marlene D. Berke, Robert Walter-Terrill, Julian Jara-Ettinger & Brian J. Scholl - 2022 - Cognitive Science 46 (10):e13195.
How veridical is perception? Rather than representing objects as they actually exist in the world, might perception instead represent objects only in terms of the utility they offer to an observer? Previous work employed evolutionary modeling to show that under certain assumptions, natural selection favors such “strict‐interface” perceptual systems. This view has fueled considerable debate, but we think that discussions so far have failed to consider the implications of two critical aspects of perception. First, while existing models have explored single (...)

“Brothers” in Arms: Does Metaphorizing Kinship Increase Approval of Parochial Altruism?Maria Abou-Abdallah, Yoshihisa Kashima & Charles Harb - 2016 - Journal of Cognition and Culture 16 (1-2):37-49.
Parochial altruism is manifested in the most violent of conflicts. Although it makes evolutionary sense for kin, many non-kin groups also behave parochially altruistically in response to threat from out-groups. It is possible that such non-kin groups share a sense of “fictive” kinship which encourages them to behave parochially altruistically for each other’s benefit. Our findings show that individuals not directly involved in a conflict approved of parochial altruism enacted by an in-group against an out-group more when the out-group posed (...)

Ou, ao contrário, de um retorno aos primeiros tempos nos quais o homem da natureza, bom e solitário, vivia na tranquilidade das paixões e na ignorância dos vícios? ObjectivesDepression and anxiety persist in cancer patients, creating an additional burden during treatment and making it more challenging in terms of management and control. Studies on the prevalence of depression and anxiety among cancer patients in the Middle East are limited and include many limitations such as their small sample sizes and restriction to a specific type of cancer in specific clinical settings. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and risk factors of depression and anxiety among cancer patients in (...)

    PR Professionals as Organizational Conscience.Marlene S. Neill & Minette E. Drumwright - 2012 - Journal of Mass Media Ethics 27 (4):220-234.
Scholars have long asserted that public relations (PR) professionals should play the role of organizational conscience, but little research has focused on why and how they play this role effectively. We found that PR professionals who played the role of organizational conscience had broadened conceptions of their roles and responsibilities, including a fervent duty to the public interest. This often put them in the position of providing criticism to powerful organizational players. Rather than raising their ethical concerns as persuasive orators, (...)

CSR and banking soundness: A causal perspective.Sana Ben Abdallah, Dhafer Saïdane & Mehrez Ben Slama - 2020 - Business Ethics 29 (4):706-721.
This is the first study to examine the relationship between sustainability and soundness in banking as part of an integrated reporting approach. We consider 12 major European banks over the period 2006–2016. To test the relationship, two indexes were constructed, the sustainable performance index, which attempts to measure sustainability, and the banking soundness index, which measures bank soundness. The results show a bidirectional causality between sustainability and banking soundness. More specifically, soundness encourages banks to engage in sustainable development activities, while (...)

The Impact of Crucibles in Developing Public Relations’ Character and Competencies as Servant Leaders.Marlene S. Neill & Juan Meng - 2022 - Journal of Media Ethics 37 (3):208-222.
Crucible experiences are essential in the development of leaders. Crucibles refer to trials and challenges that test and mold the character, values and behavior of leaders. Through in-depth interviews with 32 public relations leaders, we examined how crucible experiences specifically shaped them to practice servant leadership. Through the narratives they constructed about these experiences, we were able to learn specific details about these experiences, the lessons they gleaned and how they shaped and transformed their character, virtues and leadership style. These (...)

The relationship between languages and philosophy is so strong that French philosopher Barbara Cassin speaks of 'philosophising in languages'. This paper aims to show how translation can be a means to help disseminate philosophical ideas. It might even be called a political tool, when circulating feminist philosophical thoughts is concerned. The article uses the latest English translation of Simone de Beauvoir's Le deuxième sexe to address the pitfalls philosophy presents translators with. It also aims to defend the Interpretive Theory of (...)

An architecture governance approach for Agile development by tailoring the Spotify model.Abdallah Salameh & Julian M. Bass - 2022 - AI and Society 37 (2):761-780.
The role of software architecture in large-scale Agile development is important because several teams need to work together to release a single software product while helping to maximise teams’ autonomy. Governing and aligning Agile architecture across autonomous squads, when using the Spotify model, is a challenge because the Spotify model lacks practices for addressing Agile architecture governance. To explore how software architecture can be governed and aligned by scaling the Spotify model, we conducted a longitudinal embedded case study in a (...)
