Korean nurses’ ethical dilemmas, professional values and professional quality of life.Kyunghee Kim, Yonghee Han & Ji-su Kim - 2015 - Nursing Ethics 22 (4):467-478.
Background: In the changing medical environment, professional stress continuously increases as the individual’s quality of life suffers. Of all the healthcare professions, nursing is especially prone to burnout, compassion fatigue and reduced compassion satisfaction, due to the tensions resulting from the physical and psychological stress of caring for extremely ill patients. Objectives: This study examined the professional quality of life of clinical nurses in Korea and the relationship between their experiences in ethical dilemmas and professional values. Methods: This was a (...)

Based on a survey of 237 managers in Singapore, three measures of organizational ethics (namely, top management support for ethical behavior, the organization''s ethical climate, and the association between ethical behavior and career success) are found to be associated with job satisfaction. The link between organizational ethics and job satisfaction is argued from Viswesvaran et al.''s (1998) organizational justice and cognitive dissonance theories. The findings imply that organizational leaders can favorably influence organizational outcomes by engaging in, supporting and rewarding ethical (...)

Discrepancy between participants' understanding and desire to know in informed consent: are they informed about what they really want to know?Jiwon Koh, Eurah Goh, Kyung-Sang Yu, Belong Cho & Jeong Hee Yang - 2012 - Journal of Medical Ethics 38 (2):102-106.
Background Participants' understanding of clinical trials is important in informed consent. However, little is known about what information participants really want to know. Aims To demonstrate the existence of a discrepancy between participants' understanding and their desire to know. Methods The participants in clinical trials at Seoul National University Hospital were surveyed. The survey consisted of 11 statements based on the essential elements of informed consent. The participants gave two responses to each statement on a five-point Likert scale to rate (...)

  12. Humanizing curriculum history: Reflective and diffractive practices of teachers in South Korean education reform.Kyunghee So & Sun Young Lee - forthcoming - Educational Philosophy and Theory.
This paper seeks to humanize the history of curriculum reform by exploring the diverse relationships that teachers form with the national curriculum system in South Korea. Drawing on the concepts of reflective and diffractive practices, we analyze the professional trajectories of two teachers across three decades of national curriculum changes. One teacher’s professional career reflects a commitment to aligning teaching methods with curriculum reforms, while the other teacher considers teaching as a political act, emphasizing a teacher’s interpretive and agential roles (...)

Critical conversations in philosophy of education.Wendy Kohli (ed.) - 1995 - New York: Routledge.
Critical Conversations in Philosophy of Education presents a series of conversations expressing many of the multiple voices that currently constitute the field of philosophy of education. Philosophy of education as a discipline has undergone several turns--the once marginal perspectives of the various feminisms, critical Marxism, and poststructuralist, postmodernist and cultural theory have gained ground alongside those of Anglo-analytic and pragmatic thought. Just as western philosophers in general are coming to terms with the "end of philosophy" pronouncement implicit in postmodernism, so (...)

In this paper, I explain how Bentham’s utilitarianism is at odds with Effective Altruism’s (EA) abstract use of numbers to calculate the most ‘effective’ ways to do good. This is interesting because Bentham is widely regarded as the father of modern utilitarianism and EA is a movement popularly associated with utilitarianism today. My paper is divided into 3 parts. In part 1, I explain how Bentham’s utilitarianism is built on a view of pleasure as widely varied and inherently subjective. In (...)

Donald Davidson famously argues that when a person acts for a reason, we can characterize that person as having some sort of pro-attitude toward actions of a certain kind and believing that their action is of that kind. If acting for a reason must be caused by pro-attitudes, then the right account of pro-attitudes will help us correctly identify cases of action for reason. In this paper, we examine what it takes for a mental state to be a pro-attitude. First, (...)

  19. Feeling good: The role of feelings in the making of moral judgement.Jeremias Koh - unknown
This thesis focuses on the question of whether moral feelings are necessary to the making of moral judgments. This is an important question and the answer one gives has more interesting implications than one might initially expect. I will argue that an experientialist account of moral concepts, on which moral judgments are beliefs about objective facts represented by moral feelings, provides the best naturalistic answer to the question. To make my point, I anchor my arguments in a series of comparisons (...)

Working Out the Salvation of Privilege in Elite Schools: A Time Capsule Study of Minority Students in Asia.Aaron Koh - 2021 - British Journal of Educational Studies 69 (6):773-791.
This paper highlights how a small group of minority students worked to take advantage of the privileges available once they were admitted to an elite school. The argument proposed is that, unlike their more privileged peers, minority students who have made it through the gateways of elite schools have to work out a salvation of privilege to level up their chances and aspirations of success. A grounded theory based on ‘working out the salvation of privilege’ is derived to examine the (...)

Li Tongxuan's Utilization of Chinese Symbolism in the Explication of the Avataṃasaka-sūtra.Seunghak Koh - 2010 - Asian Philosophy 20 (2):141-158.
This article deals with Li Tongxuan's explication of the Avata asaka-s tra in terms of the Sinification of Buddhism. While the affirmation of the present human condition is shared by other Chinese Huayan masters as well, this attitude is most evident in Li Tongxuan's explication of the scripture where the Chinese symbolisms such as yin-yang and five phases are amply employed. For him, every scriptural description on ordinary objects and names, especially directions, had profound religious implications. In order to reveal (...)

Description: In this short treatise on Sikh Ethics, the Adi Granth has been taken as the basic and main sourcebook of the Sikh moralcode. The path of life enunciated by the Sikh Gurus is the path of self-realisation or perfectionism; it is neither self-gratification or hedonism nor self-denial or rationalism. Emphasis in Sikh Ethics is laid on the practice of godly qualities. Their observance makes a human being godlike. The field of the body is to be cultivated for truthful life (...)

Bad Jokes and Good Taste: an Essay on Bentham’s ‘Auto-Icon’.Tsin Yen Koh - 2021 - Revue D’Études Benthamiennes 20.
Jeremy Bentham catalogued a wide variety of uses for dead bodies in what was likely his last essay, ‘Auto-Icon’. Dead bodies could be preserved and transformed into statues and used, among other ways, as theatrical props, commemorative statues, and building materials. Auto-Iconism would eliminate the need for coffins and graveyards – as well as funeral rituals, clerics to preside over the funerals, and, arguably, the entire religious establishment. This essay offers a reading of ‘Auto-Icon’ as a bad joke: impolite, unrefined, (...)

    The Judgement of Pleasure in Bentham’s Political Thought.Tsin Yen Koh - 2024 - Revue D’Études Benthamiennes 25.

Bentham on asceticism and tyranny.Tsin Yen Koh - 2019 - History of European Ideas 45 (1):1-14.
In the late 1810s, Jeremy Bentham wrote a set of texts entitled Not Paul, But Jesus, arguing against the religious authority of St. Paul, and the principle of asceticism he propagated. This paper argues that Bentham’s critique of the principle of asceticism was not only or primarily a religious one, but a political one. Bentham objected to the principle of asceticism because it could be used to provide practical and ideological support for tyranny. The principle of asceticism, as a principle (...)

Over 25 years ago, 1988 to be exact, Maxine Greene delivered the annual John Dewey Lecture. That lecture, “The Dialectic of Freedom,” was the foundation for her book of the same title, also published in 1988 by Teachers College Press. In his foreword to the book, the late Bob Gowin, a philosopher of education at Cornell University, introduced the text with the following:Many dialectics are working in this beautifully written book, and no single formulation will capture the whole. It is (...)

Rho, a member of the Ras superfamily of small GTPases, has multiple biological roles: it regulates signal trasduction pathways linking extracellular growth factors to the assembly of actin stress fibres and focal adhesion complexes; it is required for G1 progression and activates the SRF transcription factor when quiescent fibroblasts are stimulated to grow; and it plays a role later in the cell cycle during cytokinesis. Two groups have recently succeeded in identifying downstream effectors of Rho that may mediate some of (...)

The Society of Jesus has had a long relationship with China, beginning with the failed attempt by Francis Xavier to enter the country through to the achievements of Matteo Ricci, his companions, and successors. The missionaries introduced European science, including medicine, with which they engaged both the imperial court and the commoners. The eventual expulsion of the Jesuits and formal reconnection with China via the current papacy gives a poignancy to the consideration of medicine and environmental concerns. Pope Francis is (...)

Reining in the International: How State and Society Localised International Schooling in China.Wenxi Wu & Aaron Koh - 2023 - British Journal of Educational Studies 71 (2):149-168.
There is a growing literature studying the ‘non-traditional’ type of international schools. However, a less explored and under-theorised area is the changing dynamics of the global-local interactions in the way these international schools are being redefined and shaped by local processes, regimes of control, and mechanisms. Drawing on empirical evidence from sixteen ‘non-traditional’ international schools in urban China, our paper contributes to the literature in three ways. Theoretically, we developed the notion of ‘reining in the international’ to draw analytic attention (...)
