This paper seeks to humanize the history of curriculum reform by exploring the diverse relationships that teachers form with the national curriculum system in South Korea. Drawing on the concepts of reflective and diffractive practices, we analyze the professional trajectories of two teachers across three decades of national curriculum changes. One teacher’s professional career reflects a commitment to aligning teaching methods with curriculum reforms, while the other teacher considers teaching as a political act, emphasizing a teacher’s interpretive and agential roles (...) to challenge the rigid boundaries between policy and practice. By juxtaposing these narratives, this study complicates traditional views of curriculum history, highlighting how teachers exercise critical agency in shaping their relationships with the national curriculum system. In documenting these entangled relationships, we advocate for a more inclusive understanding of teacher development that acknowledges marginalized voices and experiences often excluded from official curriculum history. This study underscores the importance of valuing the diverse ways that teachers interact with the curriculum system, arguing for a shift from a policy-driven perspective to one that embraces the dynamic interplay between curriculum structures and teacher agency. Background: In the changing medical environment, professional stress continuously increases as the individual’s quality of life suffers. Of all the healthcare professions, nursing is especially prone to burnout, compassion fatigue and reduced compassion satisfaction, due to the tensions resulting from the physical and psychological stress of caring for extremely ill patients. Objectives: This study examined the professional quality of life of clinical nurses in Korea and the relationship between their experiences in ethical dilemmas and professional values. Methods: This was a (...) cross-sectional study of a convenience sample consisting of 488 clinical nurses. We used four questionnaires to measure the participants’ demographic characteristics, experiences in ethical dilemmas, professional nursing values and professional quality of life (ProQOL assessment, Version 5). Ethical considerations: This study received approval from the Institutional Review Board of Bronco Memorial Hospital. Written informed consent was given by all participants. Results: The nurses’ professional quality of life was affected by ethical dilemmas and professional nursing values. The factors influencing compassion satisfaction were age, client domain of ethical dilemmas, social awareness, professionalism of nursing and the roles of nursing services in professional values. The factors influencing burnout were marital status (married), religion (yes), human life domain, professional work domain of ethical dilemmas, social awareness and the role of nursing services in nursing professional values. The factors influencing secondary traumatic stress were human life domain, client domain and the professional work domain of ethical dilemmas. Conclusion: Intervention to help nurses increase their professional quality of life will have a greater chance of success if they are based on the nurses’ values and beliefs about the ethical dilemmas they face and foster the establishment of positive professional values. Background: With increased attention to patient privacy and autonomy, privacy protection and information provision for patients are becoming increasingly important. Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify and analyse nurses’ and patients’ perceptions of the importance and performance of protecting patients’ privacy and providing them with relevant information. Research design: This study is a descriptive cross-sectional investigation. Participants and research context: Participants were 168 patients hospitalised in medical and surgical wards and 176 nurses who cared for them. Ethical (...) consideration: This study was approved by the Chung-Ang University Bioethics Committee, and informed written consent was collected from all participants. Findings: Nurses’ recognition of the importance of protecting patients’ privacy and providing adequate information was higher compared to their actual performance, and the nurses’ level of performance was higher in comparison with the patients’ recognition of its importance. Discussion: Although a holistic approach to patient privacy protection and information provision is needed, the medical field has not embraced this model of care. Conclusions: These findings provide empirical data to create an ethical environment for the future, as considerable attention has been devoted to patients’ rights and medical institutions’ liability for providing explanations to patients. Focus on form has been extensively studied in text-based online dyadic chats but much less has been explored in group chats with interlocutors from different language backgrounds. Additionally, there are very few studies investigating covert focus on form. This study investigated the effects of interlocutor types on errors and focus on form episodes, both covert and overt, in text-based online group chats. We collected chat logs from two collaborative online international learning projects. One project was developed for the collaboration between (...) an English course at a Chinese university and an art history course at a U.S. university; the other between another cohort of the same English course and a cultural studies course at a Mexican university. We compared errors, feedback, and other characteristics of focus on form episodes between the two projects. Analyses revealed significant differences in characteristics such as overtness, linguistic focus, and source. However, no significant differences were found for the type of focus on form, presence of uptake, uptake quality, and repair provider. Students showed a preference for self-repair over other-repair and for lexical focus over mechanical and grammatical foci in both projects. Overall, only a small proportion of errors were followed by feedback. Therefore, a small amount of uptake and successful uptake occurred in both projects. The results can shed light on how instructors could provide effective scaffolding and tasks to make virtual exchange projects more rewarding. (shrink)

The Master from Mountains and Fields is a fully annotated translation of the prose texts from the "collected works" of Sŏ Kyŏngdŏk (1489-1546), an influential Confucian scholar from the early Chosŏn period (1392-1910). A native of Songdo (also known as Kaesŏng) in present-day North Korea, Sŏ has loomed large in the Korean cultural imagination and appeared as an exceptional sage and popular hero in numerous tales, dramas, and films, yet his writings are little known outside the academic milieu. Also called (...) Master Hwadam, Sŏ embodied an archetype of the secluded scholar who remains hidden in "mountains and forests" to devote himself to his studies. Held in esteem in both South and North Korea today (a notable exception in contemporary studies on Chosŏn Neo-Confucianism), Sŏ and his ideas about Vital Energy influenced the great Korean Neo-Confucian debates of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries surrounding the psychophysiological origins of morality as well as various non-orthodox intellectual trends in the late Chosŏn. His thought is fundamentally rooted in the cosmology based on the exegesis of the Book of Changes and follows the teachings of various early Chinese Neo-Confucian thinkers; it presents a vivid example of the eclectic nature of ideas and intellectual trends coexisting within what is generically called Neo-Confucianism out of convenience. This volume presents the first English translation of all prose writings attributed to Sŏ and most of the peritexts from his posthumously published collection Hwadam chip. It reflects the importance of literary compilations (munjip) in the intellectual history of Chosŏn and the complex process of the making of Confucian masters in Korea. Sŏ's prose works are concise and diverse and offer a glimpse at an author who thwarts stereotyping; an introduction and annotations provide further context. The lengthy endnotes that accompany each text make this a useful handbook for anybody interested in Chosŏn Korea and Confucianism, from students in East Asian and Korean studies to specialists in literary Chinese (hanmun) or East Asian intellectual history. 『서양윤리학에서 본 유학(儒學)』은 저자가 도덕원리, 도덕문제, 도덕판단 등 도덕에 대한 철학적 성찰과 도덕의 보편적 원리를 탐구해 저술한 『윤리학, 그 주제와 논점』을 근거로 서양윤리와 유가윤리를 비교윤리의 관점에서 다룬 책이다. 오늘날 한국사회는 급속한 경제 성장과 물질문명의 고도화에 따른 ‘윤리의식의 부재’가 사회적으로 큰 문제가 되고 있다. 그런데 우선 생각해볼 것은 과연 한국사회에 ‘윤리의식’에 대한 보편적이고 공통된 이해가 공존하는가이다. 저자는 이 점에 주목하여 ‘한국의 보편윤리’를 모색하는 과정으로서 이 책을 저술하였다. 전통적 윤리는 오늘의 한국사회에서 더 이상 보편적 도덕이념으로 수용되지 않는다. 그렇다고 해서 현재 서양사회의 지배적인 (...) 윤리관인 공리주의윤리를 그대로 적용하기도 어렵다. 정서적으로 한국사회는 여전히 전통적인 유가윤리를 선호하기 때문이다. 이런 문제의식에서 출발한 이 책은 유가윤리와 서양윤리의 비교를 통해서 그 해답을 얻고자 하였다. 이 책을 통해 한국사상, 한국문화를 설명할 수 있고 한국사회에 작동될 수 있는 ‘한국윤리’의 이론적 틀이 마련되기를 기대한다.
