Appraisal theory has become one of the most active aproaches in the domain of emotion psychology. The appraisal process consists of the subjective evaluation that occurs during the individual's encounter with significant events in the environment, determining the nature of the emotional reaction and experience. The organism's interpretation of events and situations elicits and differentiates its emotional responses, although the exact processes involved and the limits of the theory are still a matter of debate and are currently the object of (...) active research. This paper contributes to a theory of rational choice for decision-makers with incomplete preferences due to partial ignorance, whose beliefs are representable as sets of acceptable priors. We focus on the limiting case of `Complete Ignorance' which can be viewed as reduced form of the general case of partial ignorance. Rationality is conceptualized in terms of a `Principle of Preference-Basedness', according to which rational choice should be isomorphic to asserted preference. The main result characterizes axiomatically a new choice-rule called `Simultaneous (...) Expected Utility Maximization'. It can be interpreted as agreement in a bargaining game (Kalai-Smorodinsky solution) whose players correspond to the (extremal) `acceptable priors' among which the decision maker has suspended judgment. An essential but non-standard feature of Simultaneous Expected Utility choices is their dependence on the entire choice set. This is justified by the conception of optimality as compromise rather than as superiority in pairwise comparisons. (shrink)

Traditional eschatology clashes with the theory of entropy. Trying to bridge the gap, Robert John Russell assumes that theology and science are based on contradictory, yet equally valid, metaphysical assumptions, each one capable of questioning and impacting the other. The author doubts that Russell's proposal will convince empirically oriented scientists and attempts to provide a viable alternative. Historical‐critical analysis suggests that biblical future expectations were redemptive responses to changing human needs. Apocalyptic visions were occasioned by heavy suffering in postexilic times. (...) Interpreted in realistic terms, they have since proved to be untenable. The expectation of a new creation without evil, suffering, and death is not constitutive for the substantive content of the biblical message as such. Biblical future expectations must be reconceptualized in terms of best contemporary insight and in line with a dynamic reading of the biblical witness as God's vision of comprehensive optimal well‐being that operates like a shifting horizon and opens up ever new vistas, challenges, and opportunities. Die Jahrestagung 2018 der Arbeitsgemeinschaft deutschsprachiger Philosophiedozentinnen und -dozenten im Studium der Katholischen Theologie an wissenschaftlichen Hochschulen fand vom 20.-22. Februar 2018 in der Katholischen Akademie Schwerte statt. Die Fachtagung stand unter dem Thema "Welt - Geist - Gott. Erkundungen zu Panpsychismus und Panentheismus" und widmete sich der Frage, wie sich das Gott-Welt-Verhaltnis religionsphilosophisch und unter Berucksichtigung der heutigen naturwissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse adaquat bestimmen lasst. Der Fokus lag dabei auf zwei alternativen Gottes- und Geistkonzeptionen: Panentheismus und Panpsychismus. Beide Forschungsprogramme wurden intensiv (...) diskutiert und auf ihr jeweiliges philosophisches und theologisches Potential hin befragt, das Verhaltnis von Gott und Welt sowie Geist und Materie auf eine Art und Weise zu denken, die jenseits des bekannten Dualismus von Gott und Welt auf der einen Seite und Geist und Materie auf der anderen Seite liegt. In order to be complete, Horwich’s minimalist theory must be able to deal with generalizations about truth. A logical and an epistemic-explanatory level of the generalization problem are distinguished, and Horwich’s responses to both sides of the problem are examined. Finally some persistent problems for minimalism are pointed out.
