Cultural factors are operating in the aesthetic experience of pictorial realism, occurring in a transcultural manner, and their effects are salient in beholder’s affective reaction correlated with perceptual-cognitive operation. This paper aims to demonstrate this hypothesis, by developing two analytical tools that might explain the anti-hedonic valence of Hong Taeyong, an eighteenth-century Korean literatus’ aesthetic experience of a Western religious fresco depicting the Lamentation of Christ in a Jesuit Catholic church in Beijing. First, a complex multifold conflict between «actual affect» (...) and culturally modeled «ideal affect», operating simultaneously in his visual experience, might be translated into a highly negative valence of his global affective state. Second, the variance of processing fluencies at different levels would have made his global processing operation less fluid, and it might play a role in his negative affective valence, since the affect is inherent in processing fluency signal. BackgroundAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder is clinically diagnosed; however, quantitative analysis to statistically analyze the symptom severity of children with ADHD via the measurement of head movement is still in progress. Studies focusing on the cues that may influence the attention of children with ADHD in classroom settings, where children spend a considerable amount of time, are relatively scarce. Virtual reality allows real-life simulation of classroom environments and thus provides an opportunity to test a range of theories in a naturalistic and (...) controlled manner. The objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between participants’ head movements and their reports of inattention and hyperactivity, and to investigate how their head movements are affected by different social cues of different sensory modalities.MethodsThirty-seven children and adolescents with and without ADHD were recruited for this study. All participants were assessed for diagnoses, clinical symptoms, and self-reported symptoms. A virtual reality-continuous performance test was conducted under four conditions: control, no-cue, visual cue, and visual/audio cue. A quantitativecomparison of the participants’ head movements was conducted in three dimensions using a head-mounted display in a VR classroom environment. Task-irrelevant head movements were analyzed separately, considering the dimension of movement needed to perform the VR-CPT.ResultsThe magnitude of head movement, especially task-irrelevant head movement, significantly correlated with the current standard of clinical assessment in the ADHD group. Regarding the four conditions, head movement showed changes according to the complexity of social cues in both the ADHD and healthy control groups.ConclusionChildren and adolescents with ADHD showed decreasing task-irrelevant movements in the presence of social stimuli toward the intended orientation. As a proof-of-concept study, this study preliminarily identifies the potential of VR as a tool to understand and investigate the classroom behavior of children with ADHD in a controlled, systematic manner. 황우석 교수 사건을 종합적으로 분석한 책이 나왔다. 『황우석의 나라』는 황 교수 사태가 요동칠 때 에서 기자생활을 한 이성주가 현장을 지켜보고 이를 분석한 책이다. 저자는 7년 동안 의학팀장을 맡았고 2004년 8월부터 1년 동안 미국 존스홉킨스대에서 연수를 하고 귀국한 뒤 4개월 동안 과학 및 의학 분야의 곁에서 황 교수 사태가 요동치는 현장을 지켜보았다. 이 책은 황우석 사건 보도와 관련해 알려지지 않은 언론계의 현장 이야기, 과학계의 분위기, 황우석의 로비 실태 등을 생생하게 보여준다. 또 이번 사태가 발생하기 이전의 각종 기사를 분석해 언론이 무비판적으로 보도한 (...) 황 교수의 업적이 얼마나 허점투성이인지 설득력 있게 제시하고 있다. 동시에 19세기 말 프랑스를 뒤흔들었던 ‘드레퓌스 사건’과 마찬가지로 언론이 줄기세포처럼 똬리를 틀고 있다고 진단하고 언론의 본질과 역할에 대해 문제를 제기한다. 저자는 제2의 황우석 사건을 예방하기 위해 연구비 심사제도 개선, 연구비에서 간접비의 비중 강화, 언론의 에디터제 도입 등 세세한 대안도 내놓고 있다. 이 글에서는 이황철학에 있어 중요한 사상인 ‘리발’ ‘미발’의 문제를 현실적 원인에서 비롯됨을 살펴보았다. 현실적 원인이란 다름 아닌 16세기 조선이 처한 시대적 상황을 말한다. 즉 이황 생애의 중반기까지 드리운 일련의 ‘사건(사화)’을 들 수 있다. 이러한 사건은 철학자 이황으로 하여금 15세기를 넘어 16세기라는 전환시대의 논리를 도출하게 하는 원인이기도 하다. 새로운 16세기를 열기위해서는 주희 성리학으로는 무력하기만 하고 답답하기만 하였다. 그리하여 이황은 성리학(전승)이라는 과거와 16세기 조선이라는 현실의 통일(융합)을 어떻게 창출할 수 있을까라는 질문 속에서 해결책을 모색하였던 것이다. 이황 철학의 핵심으로 자리 잡은 사칠론을 이황의 입장에서 (...) 보면 시시각각 변화무쌍한 현실의 악을 종교적 차원으로 까지 밀고 가서라도 해결하고자 하는 반면, 기대승은 현실사태에 다소 느긋한 방법으로 다가서고 있다. 이것은 결과적으로, 이황은 현실을 부정적인 측면에서 바라본다면, 기대승은 현실을 낙관하는 인간적인 측면에서 사태를 해결하고자 하는 것이다. 또한 이황은 인간은 누구나 본연지성을 가지고 있다는 평등주의(보편주의)에 입각한 입장이라면, 기대승은 사람의 기질에 따라 선할 수도 있고, 악할 수도 있다는 차별적인(상대적인) 견해를 피력한다. 이황은 끝내 선한 정인 사단과 악하거나 악하게 될 가능성이 많은 정인 칠정을 구분하고, 사단은 인간 안에 있는 본성인 리가 그대로 발한 것이라는 리발설을 고수한다. 이것은 정이 드러나기 이전인 인간 마음의 밑바탕으로서 미발의 영역에 대해 이황이 불변의 믿음을 가지고 있기에 가능한 것이다. 이황은 인간의 감정을 제대로 다스리지 못한다면 또다시 거대 악은 존재할 것이고 역사는 다시 후퇴할 것이기에, 순수한 인간의 본성이 그대로 마음의 작용으로 나타나기를 소망했던 것이다. 이 논문은 이황이 관심을 가졌던 미발론의 구조와 성격에 대해 분석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이황은 감정이 드러나기 이전인 인간 마음의 밑바탕으로서 존재하는 미발의 영역에 대해 관심을 갖는다. 여기서 말하는 미발의 영역이란 다름 아닌 마음이 외부 사물에 대해 반응하지 않는 지점을 말한다. 다시 말해 미발은 선험적으로 존재하는 영역인 셈이다. 이황은 마음의 상태를 ‘적연부동’과 ‘감이수통’이라는 구분으로 미발을 구획한다. 이것은 미발의 마음과 이발의 마음으로 구분해서, 인간이 도덕실천을 할 수 있는 계기로 삼고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 미발의 지각양태에 대한 이황의 입장은 ‘사려미맹’과 ‘지각불매’가 어느 정도 공존하고 (...) 있지만, ‘사려미맹’에 더 접근해 있다. 이것은 미발에서 ‘지각불매’가 가져올 수 있는 이발과의 경계 부분의 애매함을 떨쳐버리고자 하는 발상이다. 그리하여 미발시에는 ‘사려미맹’의 상태에 있음을 주장하여 의식의 흐름을 놓치지 않음을 보여준다. 인식의 과정과 지각의 주체 혹은 대상에 대해서도 이황은, 지각할 수 있는 것과 지각하는 바의 것, 곧 ‘능지각’과 ‘소지각’을 동시에 가지고 있음을 말한다. 이는 미발과 이발을 관통하여 리가 생동적으로 살아있음을 보여주는 장소가 마음이라는 것을 확인하고 나아가 인간의 선한 감정을 이발의 세계에서 구현하고자 하는 것이다. 이황과 이이의 성리학에 대한 기존의 연구는 주로 이론의 논리적 정합성 여부를 판단하고 또한 이론상의 차이점을 설명하는데 주안점을 둔 측면이 강하다. 그 결과 그들은 한국 성리학사에서 대립과 갈등을 상징하는 대표적인 인물로 손꼽힌다. 그들이 서로 다른 성리학 체계를 형성하는 가장 큰 이유는 리기(理氣) 개념의 이해와 상호 기능에 대한 해석의 차이 때문이다. 아울러 그들이 경험한 시대상황과도 직접적인 연관이 있다. 이러한 종합적인 요인들로 인해 그들은 서로 다른 성리학 체계를 형성하게 되는 것이다. 그 대표적인 예가 사단칠정의 리기론적(理氣論的) 해석인데, 이황은 ‘리기호발(理氣互發)’을, 이이는 ‘기발리승(氣發理乘)’을 주장한다. 그리고 그들의 (...) 의견에 동조하는 이들이 논쟁에 가담 하면서 길고 긴 대립이 시작된다. 하지만 길게 이어질 것만 같던 대립도 결국 최종목표에서는 합의를 이룬다. 그들이 지향하는 것은 일신(一身)을 주재하는 마음을 잘 다스려 성인에 도달하는 것이다. 그리고 성인에 도달하기 위한 방법으로 그들 공히 ‘경(敬)’과 ‘성(誠)’을 제시함으로써 합의를 이룰 수 있는 계기를 마련한다. 따라서 필자는 이황과 이이 성리학을 중심으로 그들의 대립과 갈등의 원인, 그리고 대립을 종식하고 합의를 이루는 일련을 과정을 살펴봄으로써, 경(敬), 성(誠)의 마음수양을 통한 성인지향이 그들 성리학의 대립을 극복할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고 있음을 살펴보려 한다. 결국 필자의 본 논문은 이황과 이이 성리학의 정합성을 묻고자 하는 것이 아니라 그들 성리학의 차이 극복을 위해 새로운 방안을 모색하려는 것이다. 본 논문은 청광자 이근주의 생애와 의리정신에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 그는 성품이 매우 강직했던 것으로 보인다. 그는 절의지사를 존경했고, 을미년 거의 때에는 동지들과 고난을 같이 하기 위해 스스로 체포되고자 했다. 경술년 국치 때에는 자결로써 의리를 지키고자 했고, 처사로서 자결하는 것을 세상 사람들이 오해할까 염려하여 처의론를 제시하기도 했다. 자결할 때 ‘존화양이척사부정(尊華攘夷斥邪扶正)’을 명분으로 삼았으며, 죽어서까지도 몸이 더렵혀지는 것을 걱정하여 화장해 줄 것을 당부했다. 이근주는 『맹자』의 ‘웅어장(熊魚章)’을 특히 좋아했는데, 이 부분이 그의 의리정신의 핵심 포인트이다. 그에 의하면 선비의 본업은 뜻을 키우는 것이다. 도에 뜻을 둔 (...) 자가 세(勢)를 쫒거나 생의 즐거움을 추구한다면 그는 이미 선비가 아닌 것이다. 그러나 세상의 선비라 칭하는 자들은 그렇지 못해서 ‘의’를 추구해야 하는 곳에서 ‘세’를 헤아리고 ‘생의 즐거움’을 추구한다. 이것이 을미년 거의가 실패하게 된 원인이요 작금에 펼쳐진 누란의 원인이다. 그가 경술년 국치 때 자결을 하게 된 것도 이 때문이다. 선비 된 자에게 망국은 도를 행할 터전을 잃어버렸다는 의미이다. 이런 상황에서는 도를 실천할 수도 없을 뿐만 아니라 그 자체 국권을 빼앗은 이적(夷狄)에게 봉사하는 길이 될 뿐이다. 그렇다고 선비 된 자가 ‘세’를 쫒으며 ‘생의 기쁨’을 위해 살 수도 없다. 성인의 덕화(德化)가 수천 년 이어져 온 내 나라를 버리고 다른 나라로 떠나는 것도 내키지 않는다. 의도(義徒)를 모집해 치욕을 설욕하고 싶어도 ‘세’를 쫒는 무리들 앞에서는 요연한 일일 뿐이다. 게다가 수십 년 간 병마에 시달려 몸도 가누기 힘든 상태이다. 결국 그가 선택할 수 있는 ‘사생취의(捨生取義)’의 길은 자결로서 선비의 삶, 즉 의리를 지키는 길밖에 없었다. 그는 지천명(知天命)의 나이에 이르러서야 비로소 ‘중화’의 위대함과 ‘이적’의 사악함을 깨달았다. 그래서 ‘대소중화(大小中華)’의 한결같은 가르침과 ‘인수화이(人獸華夷)’의 분변이 더 없이 소중하게 생각되었다. 이제부터라도 ‘화이’를 준별하는 선비의 삶을 살아야 한다. ‘절개를 세우는 자는 그 죽어야 하는 의리를 잡으면 나가서 죽을 뿐이다.’ 그가 ‘존화양이척사부정’이라는 8자(字)를 남기고 ‘화장’을 당부하며 생을 마감한 데에는 바로 이러한 뜻이 있었다. 그의 의리정신은 자결로서 민족적 자존의식을 대변하며 항일투쟁을 선도했다는 데에 의의가 있다. Der von einer internationalen Gruppe von Sprachwissenschaftlerinnen und Sprachwissenschaftlern konzipierte Band erschliesst Flecks Ansatz erstmals als methodisches Instrumentarium zur Beschreibung und Analyse wichtiger Bausteine der neueren Sprachwissenschaftsgeschichte. Die theoretisch angelegte Einleitung und die neun Einzelbeiträge stellen die Entstehung, das Nebeneinander, die Überlagerung, aber auch die Ablösung verschiedener Denkstile in der germanistischen Sprachwissenschaft dar.

This volume explores the reception of John Dewey's ideas in various historical and geographical settings such as Japan, China, Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Spain, Russia, and Germany, analyzing how and why Dewey's thought was interpreted in various ways according to mediating local discursive and ideological configurations and formations.

The goal of this article is attempting to establish a research tradition of Chinese relationalism on the methodological grounds of constructive realism. Two of Ho’s key concepts, person-in-relations and persons-in-relation, are carefully examined and reinterpreted. Three of my theoretical models, namely, my Face and Favor model , Confucian ethics for ordinary people , and a conflict resolution model , are conceived of as microworlds for illustrating an account of person-in relations in Chinese culture. The manifestation of Confucian ethics for ordinary (...) people in one’s lifeworld results in the phenomenology of persons-in-relations as depicted by Fei’s differential order or Hsu’s psychosociogram. Applying constructive realism to my models and using the result as a framework for studying Chinese social behavior constitutes Chinese relationalism. (shrink)

In view of the fact that culture-inclusive psychology has been eluded or relatively ignored by mainstream psychology, the movement of indigenous psychology is destined to develop a new model of man that incorporates both causal psychology and intentional psychology as suggested by Vygotsky . Following the principle of cultural psychology: “one mind, many mentalities” , the Mandala Model of Self and Face and Favor Model were constructed to represent the universal mechanisms of self and social interaction that can be applied (...) to any culture; both models can be used as conceptual frameworks for analyzing mentalities of people in any given culture. Taking research works from Foundations of Chinese Psychology: Confucian Social Relation as exemplars , this article illustrates how to construct culture-inclusive theories of Confucianism by multiple philosophical paradigms. The mechanism of culture-inclusive theory can be applied to explain qualitative research findings on lifeworld events of people in a particular society. It can also be utilized to predict results of quantitative research conducted to verify theoretical propositions in the scientific microworld by empirical methods. (shrink)

The deep structure of Confucianism is identified through structuralist analysis in order to provide a conceptual framework for conducting social psychological research in Chinese society. Through understanding and imitating the Way of Heaven (tiendao), Confucians constructed the Way of Humanity (rendao), which consists of two aspects; ethics for ordinary people and ethics for scholars. Ethics for ordinary people adopts the principle of Respecting the Superior for procedural justice and the principle of Favouring the Intimate for distributive justice; the person who (...) occupies the superior position should play the role of decision-maker and should allocate resources by favouring intimate relationships. Because Confucian cosmology suggests that the Way of Humanity corresponds to the Way of Heaven, Confucians required individuals to cultivate themselves with the Way of Humanity. Ethics for scholars further endows Confucian disciples with the mission of benefiting the whole society with the Way of Humanity. (shrink)
