    L'Europe des droits après la Convention.Giuseppe Bronzini - 2003 - Multitudes 4 (4):39-50.
Giuseppe Bronzini draws up the balance sheet of fifteen months of fully public work by the Convention that brought together the European countries for the drafting of a political constitution. Even though the debates have not clearly decided between an as-yet-to-be defined federalism able to give new impetus to the European social model and a functional, strongly liberal interstate cooperation, still we see all the signs of the decline of sovereignist positions, along with the subversive potential of some (...)

Introduction.Giuseppe Bianco, Charles T. Wolfe & Gertrudis Van de Vijver - 2023 - In Giuseppe Bianco, Charles T. Wolfe & Gertrudis Van de Vijver (eds.), Canguilhem and Continental Philosophy of Biology. Springer. pp. 1-9.
In this Introduction we lay out the context of a ‘Continental philosophy of biology’ and suggest why Georges Canguilhem’s place in such a philosophy is important. There is not one single program for Continental philosophy of biology, but Canguilhem’s vision, which he referred to at one stage as ‘biological philosophy’, is a significant one, located in between the classic holism-reductionism tensions, significantly overlapping with philosophy of medicine, philosophy of technology and other themes moving away from the more common existential and (...)

The Social Orders of Existence of Affordances.Giuseppe Flavio Artese & Julian Kiverstein - 2022 - Philosophia Scientiae 26:211-232.
Central figures in the phenomenological tradition, such as Aron Gurwitsch, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, drew extensively on gestalt psychology in their writings. The dialogue between phenomenology and psychology they began continues today in the field of embodied cognitive science. We take up this conversation starting from Aron Gurwitsch’s rich phenomenological analysis of the perception of the cultural world. Gurwitsch’s phenomenological descriptions of the perception of the cultural world bear a striking resemblance to work in embodied cognitive science that takes (...)

  16. Experience vs. Concept? The Role of Bergson in Twentieth-Century French Philosophy.Giuseppe Bianco - 2011 - The European Legacy 16 (7):855 - 872.
In one of his last writings, Life: Experience and Science, Michel Foucault argued that twentieth-century French philosophy could be read as dividing itself into two divergent lines: on the one hand, we have a philosophical stream which takes individual experience as its point of departure, conceiving it as irreducible to science. On the other hand, we have an analysis of knowledge which takes into account the concrete productions of the mind, as are found in science and human practices. In order (...)

    Maurice Blondel: storia e dogma.Giuseppe Bonfrate - 2021 - Roma: G&BPress.

The problematic relationship between metaphysics and history in Vichian philosophy is here analysed –and the way it transforms (...)

The politics of metaphysics: Adorno and Bloch on utopia and immortality.Giuseppe Tassone - 2004 - The European Legacy 9 (3):357-367.
The hypothesis underlying this article is that any narrative of the emergence of modernity—as the one developed by Blumenberg, for example—that leaves behind the eschatological component is incomplete, since it removes from the tradition of modernity a great deal of the Protestant religious experience which shows deep obsession with the thought of the end of the world. Through a confrontation between Adorno and Bloch, the article argues that the notions of utopia and human liberation imply logically the idea of immortality. (...)

In the debate on the origin of modern natural rights, the French philosopher Michel Villey became famous for his counter current theses: that the origin of modern subjective rights was a “deformation” or “degeneration” of the ancient and medieval concept of law; that those responsible for this rupture were Ockham and his nominalist disciples, as well as the Scholastics of Salamanca; that these last ones betrayed the thought of Aquinas on the right adhering to the nominalist. These theses serve the (...)

  50. Thomas Aquinas on Reason's Control of the Passions in the Virtue of Temperance.Giuseppe Butera - 2001 - Dissertation, The Catholic University of America
This dissertation examines Aquinas's teaching on the acts specific to temperance. According to a widespread interpretation of this teaching , the proper act of temperance is spontaneous, ordinate passion. Temperance thus not only causes someone to experience the right passions towards the right objects but does so antecedent to reason's command. Indeed, temperance is thought to have little if anything to do with reason's control of the passions. In an introductory chapter, I show that this understanding of temperance faces a (...)
