Manual of Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children (Rfp-C) with Externalizing Behaviors: A Psychodynamic Approach.Leon Hoffman, Tim Rice & Tracy A. Prout - 2015 - Routledge.
_Manual of Regulation-Focused Psychotherapy for Children with Externalizing Behaviors: A Psychodynamic Approach_ offers a new, short term psychotherapeutic approach to working dynamically with children who suffer from irritability, oppositional defiance and disruptiveness. _RFP-C_ enables clinicians to help by addressing and detailing how the child’s externalizing behaviors have meaning which they can convey to the child. Using clinical examples throughout, Hoffman, Rice and Prout demonstrate that in many dysregulated children, _RFP-C_ can: Achieve symptomatic improvement and developmental maturation as a result (...)

  4. Is God the Best Explanation of Things?: A Dialogue.Felipe Leon & Joshua Rasmussen - 2019 - Palgrave Macmillan.
This book provides an up to date, high-level exchange on God in a uniquely productive style. Readers witness a contemporary version of a classic debate, as two professional philosophers seek to learn from each other while making their cases for their distinct positions. In their dialogue, Joshua Rasmussen and Felipe Leon examine classical and cutting-edge arguments for and against a theistic explanation of general features of reality. The book also provides original lines of thought based on the authors’ own (...)

Natur bei Zeami: „Von selbst“ als Vollzugsqualität leibgeistiger Praxis (行 gyō).Leon Krings - 2024 - In Ryosuke Ohashi, Die „Natur“ in Buddhismus und Christentum. Tokyo: pp. 125-144.

    Shame and Selfhood.Felipe León - 2012 - Phänomenologische Forschungen 2012:193-211.
In this article I explore the relationship between the self and the experience of shame. Drawing mainly on contributions fromthe classical phenomenological tradition, I seek to make sense of the idea that the self of shame is a globally involved self, leaving aside any mysterious connotations that the latter notion might involve. To this end, I suggest a distinction between a property- based and a structure-based account of the self of shame. According to the latter, the self of shame is (...)

A Pandemic Instrument can Optimize the Regime Complex for AMR by Striking a Balance between Centralization and Decentralization.Isaac Weldon, Safaa Yaseen & Steven J. Hoffman - 2022 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 50 (S2):26-33.
Global antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is currently governed by a decentralized regime complex composed of multiple institutions with overlapping and sometimes conflicting principles, norms, rules, and procedures. Such a decentralized regime complex provides certain advantages and disadvantages when compared to a centralized regime. A pandemic instrument can optimize the regime complex for AMR by leveraging the strengths of both centralization and decentralization. Existing climate treaties under the UNFCCC offer lessons for achieving this hybrid approach.

Romantic love and the first-person plural perspective.Felipe León - forthcoming - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy.
On the assumption that romantic partners tend to act from a first-person plural perspective, how should the love that binds them be understood? This paper approaches this question by focusing on romantic practical integration, understood as the tendency of romantic partners to integrate their practical perspectives in such a way that allows them to have ‘reasons-for-us’: reasons for action that apply to them as a group, in a collective and non-distributive sense (Westlund Citation2009). After dispelling some reservations about the connection (...)

    Models and monism.Leon Commandeur - 2024 - Asian Journal of Philosophy 3 (2):1-13.
In this paper, I critically examine the monist interpretation of the logic-as-model view that Erik Stei puts forth in Logical Pluralism and Logical Consequence. I will argue that, in addition to the three dimensions presented in the book, there is a fourth dimension on which pluralism in logic could arise, namely epistemological pluralism. An example of such a form of pluralism is model pluralism, being the idea that we need multiple models to fully account for the subject matter of logic. (...)

    Self-improvement in a complex cybernetic system and its implications for biology.A. Gecow & A. Hoffman - 1983 - Acta Biotheoretica 32 (1):61-71.
It is commonly accepted by those who consider macroevolution as a process decoupled from microevolution that its apparent jerkiness (and, hence, incompatibility with principles of population genetics) results from the structural complexity of epigenetic systems, since all complex cybernetic systems are expected to behave discontinuously. To analyse the validity of this assumption, the process of self-improvement has been analysed in a complex cybernetic system by means of computer simulations. It turns out that the investigated system tends to develop by accumulation (...)

Symbolic Deep Networks: A Psychologically Inspired Lightweight and Efficient Approach to Deep Learning.Vladislav D. Veksler, Blaine E. Hoffman & Norbou Buchler - 2022 - Topics in Cognitive Science 14 (4):702-717.
Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are popular for classifying large noisy analogue data. However, DNNs suffer from several known issues, including explainability, efficiency, catastrophic interference, and a need for high‐end computational resources. Our simulations reveal that psychologically‐inspired symbolic deep networks (SDNs) achieve similar accuracy and robustness to noise as DNNs on common ML problem sets, while addressing these issues.

Automated Vehicle Regulation Needs to Speak to Code, not to Humans: Keeping Safety and Ethics in the Public Domain.Leon René Sütfeld, Joshua Bronson & Lando Kirchmair - 2025 - Philosophy and Technology 38 (1):1-21.
In anticipation of the market introduction of highly and fully automated vehicles, regulations for their behavior in public road traffic are emerging in various countries and regions. Yet, as we show using the example of EU and German regulations, these rules are both incomplete and exceptionally vague. In this paper we introduce three traffic scenarios highlighting conflicting ethical, legal, and utility-related claims, and perform a legal analysis with regards to the expected behavior of AVs in these scenarios. We show that (...)

The story behind the plot: About the propositionality of visually presented argumentation.Paul van den Hoven & Michael H. G. Hoffman - unknown
When we define argumentation as a communicative activity aimed at convincing a reasona-ble critic of the acceptability of a standpoint by putting forward information justifying or refuting this standpoint, it is clear that elements of this information can be brought forward in other than verbal modes. An important question is then whether visually presented information needs to be translatable into a set of propositions as traditional definitions require. The answer is: not always.

Recent research has highlighted the importance of cultivating the ethical climate of a firm with implications for ethical decision making and consumer confidence. However, there are important lessons still to be gleaned from firms responsible for generating ethical failures. Based on a case study of the Sanlu melamine milk powder scandal in China, this article analyzes the key factors that have affected consumer confidence in Sanlu and highlights main reasons for Chinese consumers’ continued distrust of state dairy enterprises.

    The Metaphysics of Gender.E. Diaz-Leon - 2024 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
What is the metaphysics of gender about? Metaphysics is the study of what there is and what it is like. On this conception, questions in the metaphysics of gender would be about the existence and nature of gender. That is, the metaphysics of gender would be about whether alleged gender categories such as being a man, a woman or an agender person are real features or kinds, and if so, what their nature is. In recent years, the metaphysics of gender (...)

This paper critically examines the notion of the other as it emerges in ethics and in the so called politics of difference. The author confronts this notion with social-ontological and dialogistic thematizations of otherness. On that basis a radical revision of what ‚difference‘ means is claimed to be neccessary in ethical and political respect.

  28. Kinds of Social Construction.Esa Díaz-León - 2018 - In Pieranna Garavaso, The Bloomsbury Companion to Analytic Feminism. London: Bloomsbury. pp. 103-122.
An important question in the debate regarding the nature of politically significant human kinds, such as gender, race, and sexual orientations, is concerned with the question of whether these human kinds are socially constructed (Stein 1999; Root 2000; Haslanger 2012; and Ásta 2013). In order to settle this debate, a more fundamental question needs to be answered: what does it mean to say that a category is socially constructed? -/- Recently, many philosophers have become interested in this issue (Hacking 1999; (...)

  31. Ethischer Intuitionismus und moralische Fehlbarkeit.Leon-Philip Schäfer - 2025 - Zeitschrift für Philosophische Forschung 79 (1):47-73.
In metaethics, there is a close connection between ethical intuitionism and moral realism that is mostly based on the fact that intuitionism is capable of providing a solution to a philosophical problem, the problem of justification. This close connection, however, is more fragile than it may initially seem because the phenomenon of moral fallibility tends to estrange both views from each other: whereas moral realism is largely motivated by fallibilist presuppositions, ethical intuitionism is tacitly under suspicion of having infallibilist consequences. Walking the Line: The White Working Class and the Economic Consequences of Morality.Kieran Bezila, Steve G. Hoffman & Monica Prasad - 2016 - Politics and Society 44 (2):281-304.
Over one-third of the white working class in America vote for Republicans. Some scholars argue that these voters support Republican economic policies, while others argue that these voters’ preferences on cultural and moral issues override their economic preferences. We draw on in-depth interviews with 120 white working-class voters to defend a broadly “economic” interpretation: for this segment of voters, moral and cultural appeals have an economic dimension, because these voters believe certain moral behaviors will help them prosper economically. Even the (...)
