Lottery- and survey-based risk attitudes linked through a multichoice elicitation task.Giuseppe Attanasi, Nikolaos Georgantzís, Valentina Rotondi & Daria Vigani - 2018 - Theory and Decision 84 (3):341-372.
We analyze the results from three different risk attitude elicitation methods. First, the broadly used test by Holt and Laury, HL, second, the lottery-panel task by Sabater-Grande and Georgantzis, SG, and third, responses to a survey question on self-assessment of general attitude towards risk. The first and the second task are implemented with real monetary incentives, while the third concerns all domains in life in general. Like in previous studies, the correlation of decisions across tasks is low and usually statistically (...)

    Time, Well-Being, and Happiness: A Preliminary Explorative Study.Mannino Giuseppe & Caronia Valentina - 2017 - World Futures 73 (4-5):318-333.
This article reflects on a survey carried out at a non-profit organization that deals with health care for oncological terminally ill in order to find out for those who are involved in this project each worker's time projection and well-being class. The survey has pointed out each single team member's time perspective and well-being class and allowed building a pedagogical path for work orientation that has involved the same team members.

Plato and Antisthenes in the Phaedo: A Reflexive Reading. Part Two.Giuseppe Mazzara - 2020 - Peitho 11 (1):33-66.
The purpose of this study is not so much to show the presence of Antisthenes in the dialogue, but rather to examine that to which Plato alludes. The controversy over ideas between the two Socratics is historically very well-attested, as can already be seen in the Cratylus. Thus, it is reasonable to assume that this controversy must have affected Plato when he was writing the Phaedo: a dialogue in which the importance of ideas and his new logic is undeniable. Hence, (...)

Introduction.Giuseppe Bianco, Charles T. Wolfe & Gertrudis Van de Vijver - 2023 - In Giuseppe Bianco, Charles T. Wolfe & Gertrudis Van de Vijver (eds.), Canguilhem and Continental Philosophy of Biology. Springer. pp. 1-9.
In this Introduction we lay out the context of a ‘Continental philosophy of biology’ and suggest why Georges Canguilhem’s place in such a philosophy is important. There is not one single program for Continental philosophy of biology, but Canguilhem’s vision, which he referred to at one stage as ‘biological philosophy’, is a significant one, located in between the classic holism-reductionism tensions, significantly overlapping with philosophy of medicine, philosophy of technology and other themes moving away from the more common existential and (...)

Communication Strategies in Cosa Nostra: An Empirical Research.Giuseppe Mannino, Serena Giunta, Serena Buccafusca, Giusy Cannizzaro & Girolamo Lo Verso - 2015 - World Futures 71 (5-8):153-172.
The following article proposes an empirical study to explore communication strategies in the Cosa Nostra. Psychological studies on the characteristics of the language within the criminal organization are undoubtedly recent, but crucial to thoroughly understand the characteristics of implicit and explicit communication it adopts in the various contexts it works, as well as the power and value they assume. The data we have obtained from some videos concerning interviews and police interrogations to men of honor have been analyzed through a (...)

Psychodynamics of the Mafia Phenomenon: Psychological–Clinical Research on Environmental Tapping and White-Collar Crime.Giuseppe Mannino & Serena Giunta - 2015 - World Futures 71 (5-8):185-201.
For many years, psychological–clinical research has been aiming at studying the Mafia from different viewpoints: the man of honor's inner world, relational and psychopathological structures of his family matrices, connections between inner and social worlds, interiorized and social rules. Today, however, a complex phenomenon has come to light, which concerns the great connection between the Mafia and financial crime, and for us as researchers it is very interesting and complicated to analyze, because it involves the study of psychological peculiarities that (...)

A Proof-Theoretic Semantic Analysis of Dynamic Epistemic Logic.Sabine Frittella, Giuseppe Greco, Alexander Kurz, Alessandra Palmigiano & Vlasta Sikimić - 2016 - Journal of Logic and Computation 26 ( 6):1961-2015.
The present article provides an analysis of the existing proof systems for dynamic epistemic logic from the viewpoint of proof-theoretic semantics. Dynamic epistemic logic is one of the best known members of a family of logical systems that have been successfully applied to diverse scientific disciplines, but the proof-theoretic treatment of which presents many difficulties. After an illustration of the proof-theoretic semantic principles most relevant to the treatment of logical connectives, we turn to illustrating the main features of display calculi, (...)

Exitium Troiae funestaque flamma. Il personaggio di Paride nell’ Ilias Latina.Giuseppe Aricò - 2023 - Philologus: Zeitschrift für Antike Literatur Und Ihre Rezeption 167 (1):83-100.
The character of Paris in the Ilias Latina maintains the ambiguity that characterises him in the Greek Iliad, where he does not lack military attitudes, but chafes against his duties to his country, being committed instead to satisfying his taste for luxury. This ambiguity is even reinforced in the epitome. The ‘heroic’ aspect of Paris’ personality emerges in a clearer light, expressed in a more mature awareness of his obligations to his family and country, but the other aspect, his indolence, (...)

This essay discusses the apparent inconsistencies in the cultural anthropologists? understanding of the two categories, ?marginality? and ?liminality,? which far from being antithetical to each other always entail each other. More precisely, I argue that the notion of marginality and liminality, which can be summed up as a perspective on the world, allows and develops a new way of thinking about education, politics, literature and, above all, the institutions of learning such as the modern university. Literary and philosophical texts, from (...)

Plato – The Motto of Delphi of the Alcibiades I: Between Emphases and Retractions of the Socratics?Giuseppe Mazzara - 2014 - Peitho 5 (1):13-42.
The present article aims to examine whether this Platonic dialogue can be regarded as polemical and competing with the similar educational proposals put forward by Xenophon and Antisthenes for the young Alcibiades aspiring to power in the city of Athens. The present article has been divided into two major parts. In the first one, I propose to unify the two opposing points of view that are reflected in the interpretations of the motto: the one that takes it to be a (...)

‘Delusional’ consent in somatic treatment: the emblematic case of electroconvulsive therapy.Giuseppe Bersani, Francesca Pacitti & Angela Iannitelli - 2020 - Journal of Medical Ethics 46 (6):392-396.
Even more than for other treatments, great importance must be given to informed consent in the case of electroconvulsive therapy. In a percentage of cases, the symbolic connotation of the treatment, even if mostly and intrinsically negative, may actually be a determining factor in the patient’s motives for giving consent. On an ethical and medicolegal level, the most critical point is that concerning consent to the treatment by a psychotic subject with a severely compromised ability to comprehend the nature and (...)

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:The Antihumanism of the Young Deleuze:Sartre, Catholicism, and the Perspective of the Inhuman, 1945–48Giuseppe BiancoGilles Deleuze, along with Jacques Derrida, Michel Foucault, and to a lesser extent Jean-François Lyotard, is considered an avatar of post-structuralism, and often associated with the critique of the concepts of identity and subjectivity. Antonio Signorini’s contribution to the constitutive theory of non-linear elasticity is reconstructed and analyzed. Some uninformed opinions suggesting he had a minor role, lacking of significant results, are discussed and refuted. It is shown that Signorini should be rightly credited for being among the first scholars aware of the central problem of non-linear elasticity: the determination of the general form of the elastic potential.

This paper examines the contribution of Gabrio Piola to continuum mechanics.Though he was undoubtably a skilled mathematician and a good mechanician, little is commonly known about his papers within the international scientific community, principally because a large part of the Italian school of mechanics was isolated in the first half of the XIXth century. We examine and comment on Piola’s most important papers, and compare them with those of his contemporaries Cauchy, Poisson and Kirchhoff.

Deliberative Agonism and Agonistic Deliberation in Hannah Arendt.Giuseppe Ballacci - 2019 - Theoria 66 (161):1-24.
In the literature there are two well-established but opposite readings of Arendt: as an agonistic theorist and as a deliberative one. In between these two positions a smaller number of scholars have argued that in Arendt these two dimensions can to a large extent be reconciled. This paper follows this third path but tries to bring it one step further. In particular, it defends the idea that those scholars who have proposed this third reading of Arendt have fallen short of (...)

In this work I propose an analogy between Pythagoras's theorem and the logical-formal structure of Werner Heisenberg's "relations of uncertainty." The reasons that they have pushed to me to place this analogy have been determined from the following ascertainment: Often, when in exact sciences a problem of measurement precision arises, it has been resolved with the resource of the elevation to the square. To me it seems also that the aporie deriving from the uncertainty principle can find one solution with (...)
