For the time being African philosophy is treated regularly in research and in teaching at two European scientific institutions: at the University of Vienna and at Erasmus University Rotterdam. In October 1993 there have been held two conferences of Western and African philosophers at both universities. Eleven African and nine Western scholars participated as speakers in these conferences. Four African speakers gave lectures at the Vienna and at the Rotterdam conference. The Vienna conference dealt with general questions of postcolonial philosophy (...) in Africa. The conference at Rotterdam focused on the processes of democratization in African countries since 1989. This volume contains the papers of both conferences. En ce moment la philosophie Africaine est traité regulièrement dans les recherches et dans l'enseignement à deux instituts scientifiques Européens: à l'Université de Vienne et à l'Université Erasme de Rotterdam. En Octobre 1993 deux conférences de philosophes Occidentals et Africains ont été organisé aux deux universités. Onze savants Africans et neuf savants Occidentals ont participé à ces deux conférences. Quatre savants Africains ont présenté des communications à tous les deux conférences de Vienne et de Rotterdam. La conférence Viennoise s'occupait de questions générales de la philosophie postcoloniale en Afrique. La conférence de Rotterdam focusait aux procès de démocratisation dans des pays africains depuis 1989. Se trouvent en ce volume les contributions à les deux conférences. (shrink)

Denken geschieht an einem Ort. Zugleich gilt es zu bedenken, was einen Ort zum Ort werden lasst. Offenbar setzt also das Denken, wie auch jedes Sprechen und Handeln, einen Standort bzw. einen Standpunkt voraus, die selbst wiederum zum Thema philosophischer Betrachtung werden bzw. gemacht werden mussen. Dabei kann freilich Ort ein Mehrfaches bedeuten, etwa den Korper, die politische Schicht, den sozialen Status, das sozialisierte Geschlecht, die Sprache, kulturelle Geflechte, Lebenswelten und nicht zuletzt geographische Landschaften sowie geschichtliche Zeitraume. All dies sind (...) - je nach Konstellation - Orte, die das Denken bedingen. Andererseits haben verschiedene Denkweisen in der Geschichte und Gegenwart immer wieder den Anspruch erhoben, universal zu agieren, d. h. in Unabhangigkeit von allen Milieus, Raumen, Zeiten, Sprachen, Geschlechtern usw. diese uberschreiten zu konnen. Von dieser vielschichtigen Fragestellung ausgehend setzt der vorliegende Band diesseits inter- wie transkultureller Selbstverstandigungen an. Anstatt jedoch von einer antagonistischen Gegenuberstellung auszugehen, wonach man sich einer der beiden Diskurslandschaften - wie etwa Universalismus hier, Relativismus/Partikularismus dort - anzuschliessen hatte, wird hier vielmehr die Abhangigkeit und Reziprozitat beider betont. In diesem Sinne, und dies ware der Leitfaden dieses Buches, bedeutet Ort/e des Denkens zugleich Denken des Ortes wie der Orte. (shrink)

Despite its draft character, the Marburg lecture from the summer semester of 1926 can rightly be regarded as Heidegger's version of a philosophizing passage through the history of Greek philosophy up to Aristotle, which was attempted in the thinking phase of Being and Time. Entirely in line with the historical understanding of being and time, these interpretations aim to repeat the crucial beginning of Western philosophy as an ever richer and more differentiated process of discovering being from beings, because only (...) in this way can contemporary philosophy adequately explore its possibilities for questioning can acquire.In contrast to the later understanding, which interprets the history of Greek philosophy as a movement of disintegration of an original affirmation of being, Heidegger sees in the present lecture an ascending movement of the self-development of the idea of ​​being towards the climax in Aristotelian philosophy. The lecture is proof that Heidegger's way of formulating and developing the concept of being originates to a significant extent from dealing with history, the forms of thought and the basic concepts of Greek philosophy.[Publisher's synopsis]. Ein wichtiges Anliegen der großen Konzilien des Spätmittelalters war die Reform des monasti-schen Lebens. Ausgehend von der italienischen Benediktinerabtei Subiaco fanden diese Bestrebun-gen besonders in den deutschsprachigen Klöstern ein breites Echo. Es bildeten sich Reformzentren heraus, in denen die Benedikt-Regel eine neue spirituelle und kultu-relle Kraft entfaltete. Dabei wurde nicht nur auf eine strengere Einhaltung der Gelübde Wert gelegt, sondern auch auf eine humanistische und theologische Bildung der Mönche. Alle Bereiche des mo-nastischen Lebens wurden einer strukturellen und geistigen Erneuerung unterzogen. (...) Der Austausch mit anderen kulturellen Strömungen der Zeit war rege, führende Persönlichkeiten waren daran be-teiligt. Posset, Franz The 500th anniversary of Luther's Reformation has been commemorated and celebrated in a decade-long undertaking between 2007 and 2017. At its beginning in 2007, the Catholic-Ecumenical publisher Paulist Press issued a volume within its series of the Classics of Western Spirituality, titled Luther's Spirituality, which was edited and translated by Lutheran theologians Philip D. Krey and Peter D. S. Krey, with a preface by Lutheran theologian Timothy J. Wengert. It contains numerous text selections. Toward the end of (...) the 'Luther Decade', the two compilers offered another anthology, The Catholic Luther: His Early Writings, published by the same press in 2016, with a foreword by Catholic ecumenist Wolfgang Th nissen, director of the Ecumenical Institute in the Archdiocese of Paderborn, Germany. Ritual atonement for Cohen aims exclusively at ethical repentance. Sins, or ethical failures, are regarded as unwitting misdeeds, corrigible once recognized. As individuals continue to vacillate, their need for repentance remains life-long. Rosenzweig, however, considers redemption from sin impossible without recourse to miracles. Individual failures are failures in wish, Rosenzweig implies, rather than failures in deed, as Cohen maintains; hence atonement requires above all the ongoing regulating of wishes through liturgical prayer. "Repentance" (t'shuvah), which for Cohen is the "return" to (...) ethical integrity, is for Rosenzweig the "return" to the daily, weekly, and yearly prayers of the Jewish liturgy. (shrink)

Avec Walter Benjamin, Franz Rosenzweig (1886-1929) est sans conteste l'une des figures les plus originales de la pensée allemande du début du XXe siècle. Les effets de ses œuvres ont été immédiatement sensibles dans toutes les orientations du judaïsme allemand, au cours même de l'identité allemande lorsqu'avec Martin Buber il donna une nouvelle traduction de la Bible, et, plus généralement, dans la philosophie qui voulait, comme la pensée de Heidegger, rompre avec l'idéalisme, la tradition métaphysique ou avec les (...) illusions du positivisme d'avant-guerre ; mais c'est surtout dans la controverse avec le christianisme que se précise peu à peu une nouvelle conception de l'existence juive, une nouvelle perspective messianique. La genèse de son livre majeur, L'Étoile de la Rédemption, est, elle aussi, peu commune puisque Rosenzweig l'a d'abord ébauché, dans les tranchées où il était mobilisé, à travers des conversations, des correspondances - en situation de dialogue donc -, puis l'a poursuivi en en rédigeant une partie sur des cartes postales adressées à sa mère. Le présent recueil rassemble ces textes préparatoires de même qu'une sorte de longue postface explicative, des cours qu'il donna dans le nouvel institut d'enseignement qu'il avait fondé à Francfort, ainsi que des extraits du journal de l'auteur. Autant d'éclairages qui permettent de mieux comprendre L Étoile de la Rédemption, ses présupposés comme ses points de fuite, et qui esquissent les perspectives politiques, esthétiques et philosophiques dont un second volume se fera plus précisément l'écho. Milan Kundera and Franz Kafka - How Not to Forget Everydayness Purpose of the article is to show that while in fundamental constitutional questions we are still attentive to our past, in everyday legal cases we can forget more likely. In my opinion, in case of the post-communist countries it is very dangerous to forget the Past because we have nothing other than our memories. To forget means either to be exposited the danger of return to the system as (...) it was or to transform our legal praxis into a depersonalized system.Methodology/methods In this article I want to analyze two decisions of Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic and compare them with situation described in early works of Milan Kundera. His work reflecting the past everydayness in communist Czechoslovakia can be used as a good example of the analyses of forgetting. Very similar inspirations we can find in work of Franz Kafka or even better in Milan Kundera's interpretation of Kafka's work. The scientific aim of this article is to show that although the literature represents different conception of knowledge when this knowledge is compared with legal knowledge we can gain parallels that describe the law rooted in culture and society.Conclusions of this article show that on one side we face reminding of our Past in decisions regarding politically considerable cases. On the other side we face the oblivion: In cases at constitutional level dealing with everydayness in legal praxis we can find rather shift to formal interpretation without any reference to our past. The result can be Kafkaesque legal system without any signs of living people. (shrink)

Daneben (...) stehen historische und grundsätzliche Einordnungen des Themas sowie alltagspraktische Überlegungen zum Umgang mit Menschenwürde und Menschenrechten in professionellen Kontexten, z. This paper focuses on the work of Czech aesthetician and ethnologist Josef Jedlička who describes ornament as a product of territorial rule. In his book The Ornament, Jedlička addresses the problem of ideological control of territorial repetition as an emergence of entropy. To understand Jedlička’s claims of entropic repetition, I propose introducing it in dialogue with Deleuze’s conception of repetition, in which differentiation is not an external but an internal rule of repetition. I argue that Jedlička’s conception of ornament as (...) an externally imposed rule of senseless layering of imposed patterns allows us to understand the risk of social disconnection. In contrast, Deleuze’s account of territorial repetition as a production of erotic rhythm is based on the internal rule of differentiation, which allows us to see social connection as an ongoing variation assembled by desire. The philosophical consequences of these different approaches to repetition are further examined in their divergent readings of Franz Kafka’s work. (shrink)

In this comment on Thomas Nisters’ “Gratitude, Anger and the Horror of Asymmetry” I propose a different reading of Schnitzler’s short story that serves as a basis for Nisters’ reflections. On my interpretation, the behaviour of Franz is best understood on the background of a traditional understanding of gratitude, one that we can find, for instance, in Thomas Aquinas.

Franc Rozencvajg se smatra egzistencijalistickim filozofom, jer je u svom glavnom delu, Zvezda iskupljenja, smrt postavio kao sredisnju temu. Religija je tu shvacena kao mesto na kome smrt vise ne mora da bude proterana iz zivota, kao sto je to u areligioznom zivotu. Ako je religija ljubav, onda je smrt deo zivota, kao sto je to u ljubavi izmedju dvoje zaljubljenih: kao prihvaceni sastavni deo celokupnih njihovih zivota. Rad pokusava da sledi ovu argumentaciju i da je ucini verodostojnom.

A suggestion for research on Rosenzweig and Viktor von Weizsacker, Franz Rosenzweig's Philosophical legacy: Levinas or Strauss?

Long awaited and eagerly anticipated, this remarkable volume allows English-speaking readers to experience a profound dialogue between the German philosopher Martin Heidegger and the Swiss psychiatrist Medard Boss. A product of their warm friendship, _Zollikon Seminars_ chronicles an extraordinary exchange of ideas. Heidegger strove to transcend the bounds of philosophy while Boss and his colleagues in the scientific community sought to understand their patients and their world. The result: the best and clearest introduction to Heidegger's philosophy available. Boss approached (...) Heidegger asking for help in reflective thinking on the nature of Heidegger's work. Soon they were holding annual two-week meetings in Boss's home in Zollikon, Switzerland. The protocols from these seminars, recorded by Boss and reviewed, corrected, and supplemented by Heidegger himself, make up one part of this volume. They are augmented by Boss's record of the conversations he had with Heidegger in the days between seminars and by excerpts from the hundreds of letters the philosopher wrote to Boss between 1947 and 1971. En este trabajo partimos de la hipótesis de que Heidegger tiene en miras las nociones aristotélicas de _δύναμις_ (_dýnamis_) y _δυνατóν_ (_dynatón_) al momento de tematizar su concepto de posibilidad (_Möglichkeit_) en _Sein und Zeit_ (1927), pero no con el sólo propósito de asimilar las reseñadas conceptualizaciones –apropiación que, como veremos subsiguientemente, no es plena-, sino también, para radicalizarlas, asumiendo un punto de vista francamente superador. Sustentamos esta tesis, en principio, en el hecho que Aristóteles haya pensado que la _ἐνέργεια_ (...) (_enérgeia_) o _ἐντελέχεια_ (_entelécheia_) es, en términos generales, anterior (_πρότερον_/_próteron_) respecto de la _dýnamis_, siendo esta posición teórica revisada y renovada por Heidegger en el texto reseñado. Por otra parte, Heidegger cuestiona la tesis aristotélica de la fundamentalidad de la realidad efectiva (_Wirklichkeit_) o de la realidad a secas (_Realität_) y como consecuencia de ello, el concepto aristotélico de ser (_εἶναι/eînai_), _ἐστίν_ (_estín_) o lo que es (_ὄν/ón_), señalando no sólo que la posibilidad es más originaria que la realidad efectiva, sino también, que la realización de una posibilidad no implica nunca la transición a una realidad efectiva. Además, el vínculo de Heidegger con Aristóteles se inicia muy tempranamente -más específicamente, en el año 1907-, merced a la lectura de la tesis doctoral de Franz Brentano y se prolonga constantemente desde 1921, cuando Heidegger dicte un seminario sobre _De Anima_ en la Universidad de Friburgo. Noch heute bekannt ist das aus der Antike uberkommmene Schema der vier Elemente (Erde, Wasser, Luft, Feuer) und ihrer Eigenschaften. Es war eine der wesentlichen Ordnungsformen im Weltbild der mittelalterlichen Menschen. Entstehung und Bestimmung der Natur und der Lebewesen, Gesundheit und Krankheit, Gut und Bose lieaen sich aus ihr erklaren, Gott bediente sich ihrer zur Ordnung der Schopfung und sie gab den Rahmen vor fur die Entfaltung menschlichen Willens. Im ausgehenden Mittelalter, der Renaissance, wurde dieses Denken aufgebrochen. Die Eigenart von (...) Lebewesen und Naturvorgangen oder die Handlungsmoglichkeiten der Menschen konnten jetzt auch als Kraftubertragung oder durch die Gunst der Stunde erklart werden. Vollig aufgegeben wurde die Ordnungsvorstellung der vier Elemente wahrend des Mittelalters aber nie.
