Fanon, photography, and the limits of social marketing campaigns.Errol Francis - 2016 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 23 (3):257-260.
Flick Grey interrogates the mental health discourse around anti-stigma, recovery, consumer participation, and co-production in relation to a larger discursive context around othering and seeks to question how much they challenge existing power relations. Grey approaches this question through an analysis of a billboard campaign that was mounted in 2008 by Mind in Australia, and asks us to look beyond the apparently positive representations of mental health service users and modes of involving them and to situate such strategies within a (...)

The Oxford Handbook of Reproductive Ethics.Leslie Francis (ed.) - 2016 - Oxford University Press.
Intimate and medicalized, natural and technological, reproduction poses some of the most challenging ethical dilemmas of our time. This volume brings together scholars from multiple perspectives to address both traditional and novel questions about the rights and responsibilities of human reproducers, their caregivers, and the societies in which they live.

  7. An empirical and ethical analysis of factors motivating managers' merger decisions.Francis K. Achampong & Wold Zemedkun - 1995 - Journal of Business Ethics 14 (10):855 - 865.
This paper examines the role of managerial self-interest in the merger market. It looks at factors influencing managers'' merger decisions by analyzing managerial expense preference factors on cross-sectional data employing non-parametric statistical methods. The same factors are examined for acquiring, acquired, and merging firms, and control groups used in each case. The results support the authors'' contention that managerial discretion is a significant motivating factor for mergers. The changes in expense preference factors indicate management decisions which provide conditions allowing management (...)

(1 other version)Metal Maidens, Achilles' Shield, and Pandora: The Beginnings of "Ekphrasis".James A. Francis - 2009 - American Journal of Philology 130 (1):1-23.
Ekphrasis has been a popular topic in recent years among scholars of both classical and later literature. The latter have been particularly interested in the modern definition of ekphrasis as a description of artwork and the development of global definitions and theories. Ancient ekphrasis, however, was much broader in scope. By examining Hephaestus' automaton handmaids and the shield of Achilles in the Iliad, along with the Pandora stories in the works of Hesiod, we can illustrate the nature and character of (...)

    Switzerland as a Model for the EU.Francis Cheneval & Mónica Ferrín - 2018 - In . pp. 10-39.
This chapter compares the institutional setting and integrations processes in Switzerland and the EU. The major findings are that EU integration is trying to achieve more political integration and accommodation of a much higher degree of diversity in much less time than has ever been the case in Switzerland. Integration and expansion processes that were slower and non-linear in Switzerland and that happened in separate phases (e.g. religious diversification, linguistic diversification, territorial expansion, etc.) are all going on at the same (...)

Moving Upward Together: Creating Strategic Alignment to Sustain Systemic School Improvement.Francis Martin Duffy - 2004 - R&L Education.
If school districts want to sustain improvements that have been achieved during this period of district transformation, district leaders need to align their district, both vertically and horizontally. Alignment assures that the work of individuals supports their team goals, the work of teams supports their school's goals, the work of schools supports their clusters, and the work of clusters supports the district's strategic direction. This groudbreaking work presents qualitative information about the nature of strategic alignment in school systems and how (...)

On 27 September 2018 Pope Francis addressed priests, deacons, and lay people at a formation course promoted by the Roman Rota. In the presentation, Francis reaffirmed the need for a permanent catechumenate for the sacrament of matrimony. The Pope noted that the permanent catechumenate for the sacrament of matrimony is a journey that is shared with priests, pastoral workers and Christian spouses. The Pope also stated that in the context of the sacrament of matrimony, a catechumenate concerns marriage (...)

The History of Algology, Algotherapy, and the Role of Inhibition.Francis Schiller - 1990 - History and Philosophy of the Life Sciences 12 (1):27 - 49.
Cephalalgia (1st century AD), nostalgia (1678), neuralgia (18th century), causalgia (1872) were terms followed in the 1950's by Bonica's 'algology... a disease state of its own', addressed by ever-growing numbers of pain clinics, strongly foreshadowed by Leriche's douleur maladie in the 1930's. (Hence also 'algotherapy'). Philosophers first, then early academic physiologists began to exhibit interest in pain, that all too common phenomenon, only too often unyielding to theoretical as well as practical efforts. Was it, after all, an instance of built-in (...)

The Assessment of Object Relations Phenomena in Adolescents: Tat and Rorschach Measu.Francis D. Kelly - 1997 - Routledge.
This book offers clinicians a long-awaited comprehensive paradigm for assessing object relations functioning in disturbed younger and older adolescents. It gives a clear sense of how object relations functioning is manifest in different disorders, and illuminates how scores on object relations measures are converted into a therapeutically relevant diagnostic matrix and formulation. Outlining the process of object relations assessment, Kelly presents vividly detailed cases of a range of disorders including anorexia nervosa, borderline states, depressive disorders, and trauma. The cases portray (...)

A replication and re-analysis of a classic texture segmentation study.Gregory Francis & Maria Kon - forthcoming - Attention, Perception, and Psychophysics.
A classic finding reported in Beck (1966a) is that observers tend to indicate a more natural texture break between a set of T’s and tilted T’s than between a set of T’s and backward L’s. This finding has played a prominent role in discussions about the properties of texture segmentation and in the development of computational theories of texture segmentation. Due to the small sample size of the original study, we replicated the original experiment with a larger sample. Regrettably, we (...)

Human performance in default reasoning.Francis Jeffry Pelletier & Renée Elio - unknown
There has long been a history of studies investigating how people (“ordinary people”) perform on tasks that involve deductive reasoning. The upshot of these studies is that people characteristically perform some deductive tasks well but others badly. For instance, studies show that people will typically perform MP (“modus ponens”: from ‘If A then B’ and ‘A’, infer ‘B’) and bi-conditional MP (from: ‘A if and only if B’ and ‘A’, infer ‘B’) correctly when invited to make the inference and additionally (...)

The Effect of Syntactic Form on Simple.Francis Jeffry Pelletier - unknown
In this paper we report preliminary results on how people revise or update a previously held set of beliefs. When intelligent agents learn new things which conflict with their current belief set, they must revise their belief set. When the new information does not conflict, they merely must update their belief set. Various AI theories have been proposed to achieve these processes. There are two general dimensions along which these theories differ: whether they are syntactic-based or model-based, and what constitutes (...)
