I wondered what their editors and contributors were writing now. I wondered about the work of their students and people like me: those of us who understand everything we write as indebted to the path-making, silence-clearing, generative, and bodacious work of the participants in the miracles that are This Bridge Called My Back and But Some of Us Are Brave.But today as I reread the contributions that actually emerged from this process, I realize that my dream was too small. I imagined writing that would provide evidence of the ongoing impact made by these two anthologies. Instead, the creative writing in this special issue offers something more crucial and beautiful than I had imagined. These works are not mere evidence of a transformed world; these works are continuing to transform the world in urgent and visionary ways. As repeated again and again by participants in the 2022 celebration for the fortieth anniversary celebration of This Bridge Called My Back, the work that inspired these anthologies is not over. The writings featured in this issue not only show [End Page 198] how this work continues, but they feed, nurture, and provoke us as we honor our responsibility to transform this world.For example, when Akasha Gloria Hull, coeditor of But Some of Us Are Brave, shares her daily early morning meditative writing in "Writing and Rebirth: A Set of Journal Poems," we remember not only her fundamental work excavating the daily lives of Black women writers from the nineteenth century—most notably in Give Us Each Day, her edited book based on the diaries of poet Alice Dunbar Nelson—but also our own imperative. Hull's reflections on health challenges, interpersonal conflict, resurrection, collaboration, and writing itself remind us that our feminist praxis is impactful because of its dailyness. Those of us who wake up tomorrow will need to ask the same critical questions the editors of But Some of Us Are Brave asked of the fields of Black studies and women's studies. We will find surprises and repetitions in the days we meet, and then we will have to do it again.When we read two new prose poems by Cheryl Clarke, an original contributor to This Bridge Called My Back, we have an opportunity to time travel. In "Living as a Lesbian in the Archive of Style," we venture into a critical engagement with the term "hardcore lesbian," displacing the desires of the person who needs to classify others using that term with those of someone who has been hailed by it. Clarke's poem is a reminder that as we work in literary traditions and fields of study made possible by the revolutionary identity politics of an earlier era, we are still responsible for centering the experiences of those most impacted by our fluent and fluid naming practices. In "History," Clarke offers us a timely Black lesbian feminist lens on many iterations of responding to police violence, centering the perspective of a lesbian, her lover, and her lover's husband.The poem "On Being an hbcu Graduate, Teacher, Professor-Scholar at Stillman College, Tuscaloosa, AL, in May 2015" by doris diosa davenport—an original contributor to But Some of Us Are Brave—highlights the intimacy, hilarity, and poignancy of the daily work of intergenerational critical and creative praxis. Given the variety of roles psychologists can choose to engage on social media, it is imperative that guidelines are established. Behr (Washington, DC: Catholic University of America Press, 2019), ix + 259 pp.The status of Leo XIII's Rerum Novarum as the origin point of what has come to be called Catholic Social (...) Teaching (CST), or Catholic social doctrine, has been reinforced on the magisterial level by the commemorations of the encyclical by Pius XI, Paul VI, and John Paul II. It should be noted, then, that the tradition of CST is comparatively recent. Indeed, it is nearly coextensive with the twentieth-century. Nevertheless, this short tradition already calls for a ressourcement. As Russell Hittinger has pointed out, reflections on CST often move swiftly to the particulars of social issues without an adequate grasp even of its basic concepts: subsidiarity, solidarity, the common good, and the dignity of the person. Further, historical [End Page 1101] developments have had dramatic impact upon the ways in which these principles have been received and developed in the course of this young tradition.In his book Social Justice and Subsidiarity: Luigi Taparelli and the Origins of Modern Catholic Social Thought, Thomas C. Behr provides a major contribution to just such a ressourcement. He does this by presenting an introduction to the thought of the Jesuit scholar whose revival of Thomistic thought in a modern register formed the basis for Leonine social teaching. As Behr explains, Taparelli has remained a somewhat hidden figure in accounts of the genesis and development of CST. He goes unmentioned in the major social encyclicals of Leo and Pius, despite the fact that Leo himself was Taparelli's student. Because of his rhetorically and philosophically potent critique of Enlightenment thought and its effect on mid-nineteenth-century Europe, available to a popular audience through his frequent contributions to the Jesuit periodical La Civiltà Cattolica, Taparelli's name carried baggage for a Church that sought to move beyond the posture of reaction to liberal political orders.However, as Behr shows in the introduction, Taparelli hardly rejected the methods and insights of modern political thought tout court. Behr describes Taparelli's system as a "realist social science." This terminology speaks to the promise which Taparelli found in the sociological analysis of Montesquieu in particular. Though Taparelli judged that Montesquieu held a questionable preference for a republican political form, he greatly admired Montesquieu's ability to, as Behr puts it, "bring political theory into relationship with social theory and historical contingency" (8). Though Taparelli was not familiar with the work of Alexis De Tocqueville, Behr also notes the resonances between Taparelli's work and Tocqueville's political sociology and defense of "intermediary institutions." Yet Taparelli makes up for what the sociological approaches of Montesquieu and Tocqueville lack in the way of natural, teleological principles of politics. Behr alerts the reader from the very beginning of his work that, in approaching Taparelli, he will not find a simple recapitulation of Thomas, but rather a creative approach to political thought which aims to set what is worthy in the modern empirical methodologies on firmer foundations through the recovery of Thomistic-Aristotelian principles.In chapter 1, "Taparelli and the Age of Ideology," Behr situates Taparelli within the political conflicts of the early nineteenth century. Behr sets the scene for Taparelli's renovated Scholasticism by explaining the opposition between Catholic traditionalism (represented especially by Joseph De Maistre and Donoso Cortés) and Catholic liberalism (represented especially by Henri Dominique Lacordaire and his more radical associate Felicité de Lammenais). Philosophical and sociological approaches in technology have increasingly shifted toward describing AI (artificial intelligence) systems as ‘(moral) agents,’ while also attributing ‘agency’ to them. It is only in this way – so their principal argument goes – that the effects of technological components in a complex human-computer interaction can be understood sufficiently in phenomenological-descriptive and ethical-normative respects. By contrast, this article aims to demonstrate that an explanatory model only achieves a descriptively and normatively satisfactory result if the concepts of ‘(moral) (...) agent’ and ‘(moral) agency’ are exclusively related to human agents. Initially, the division between symbolic and sub-symbolic AI, the black box character of (deep) machine learning, and the complex relationship network in the provision and application of machine learning are outlined. Next, the ontological and action-theoretical basic assumptions of an ‘agency’ attribution regarding both the current teleology-naturalism debate and the explanatory model of actor network theory are examined. On this basis, the technical-philosophical approaches of Luciano Floridi, Deborah G. Johnson, and Peter-Paul Verbeek will all be critically discussed. Despite their different approaches, they tend to fully integrate computational behavior into their concept of ‘(moral) agency.’ By contrast, this essay recommends distinguishing conceptually between the different entities, causalities, and relationships in a human-computer interaction, arguing that this is the only way to do justice to both human responsibility and the moral significance and causality of computational behavior. The status and functioning of shame is contested in moral psychology. In much of anglophone philosophy and psychology, it is presumed to be largely destructive, while in Confucian philosophy and many East Asian communities, it is positively associated with moral development. Recent work in human-robot interaction offers a unique opportunity to investigate how shame functions while controlling for confounding variables of interpersonal interaction. One research program suggests a Confucian strategy for using robots to rebuke participants, but results from experiments with (...) educational technologies imply a different and potentially opposing account of shame’s role in personal development. By digging deeper into the details of Confucian theorizing about shame, I identify a unifying explanation for these apparently conflicting results. I conclude by offering suggestions for future empirical research in human-robot interactions to further investigate shame’s role in moral development. (shrink)

Feminized AIs designed for in-home verbal assistance are often subjected to gendered verbal abuse by their users. I survey a variety of features contributing to this phenomenon—from financial incentives for businesses to build products likely to provoke gendered abuse, to the impact of such behavior on household members—and identify a potential worry for attempts to criticize the phenomenon; while critics may be tempted to argue that engaging in gendered abuse of AI increases the chances that one will direct this abuse (...) toward human beings, the recent history of attempts to connect video game violence to real-world aggression suggests that things may not be so simple. I turn to Confucian discussions of the role of ritualized social interactions both to better understand the roots of the problem and to investigate potential strategies for improvement, given a complex interplay between designers and device users. I argue that designers must grapple with the entrenched sexism in our society, at the expense of “smooth” and “seamless” user interfaces, in order to intentionally disrupt entrenched but harmful patterns of interaction, but that doing so is both consistent with and recommended by Confucian accounts of social rituals. Biomedical research recruitment today focuses on including participants representative of global genetic variation—rightfully so. But ethnographic attention to practices of inclusion highlights how this agenda often transforms into “predatory inclusion,” simplistic pushes to get Black and brown people into genomic databases. As anthropologists of medicine, we argue that the question of how to get from diverse data to concrete benefit for people who are marginalized cannot be presumed to work itself out as a byproduct of diverse datasets. To actualize the (...) equitable translation of genomics, practitioners need to place the impacts of ancestral genetic difference in the scope of much more impactful social determinants. For this to happen, multidisciplinary expertise needs to be leveraged, and current, structurally unequal health care systems ultimately need to transform. As modest steps toward this goal, new models for benefit‐sharing must be developed and implemented to mitigate existing inequality between data donors and the entities profiting from that data. OBJECTIVES: To study the resuscitation preferences, choice of decision-maker, views on the seeking of patients' wishes and determinants of these of elderly hospital in-patients. DESIGN: Questionnaire administered on admission and prior to discharge. SETTING: Two acute geriatric medicine units (Southampton and Poole). PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred and fourteen consecutive consenting mentally competent patients admitted to hospital as emergencies. RESULTS: Resuscitation was wanted by 60%, particularly married and functionally independent patients and those who had not already considered it. Not wanted resuscitation was (...) associated with lack of social contacts. Sixty-seven per cent welcomed enquiry about their preferences and 78% wanted participation in decision, 43% as sole decision-maker. Wishing to choose oneself was associated with not wanting resuscitation, prior knowledge of it, and lack of a spouse. Patients' opinions remained stable during their admission. CONCLUSIONS: Discussion of resuscitation is practical on hospital admission without causing distress and the views expressed endure through the period of hospitalisation. Elderly patients' attitudes depend partly on personal health and social circumstances. This may assist doctors when patients are unable to participate themselves. (shrink)

Some views articulate reality's hierarchical structure using relations from the fundamental to representations of reality. Other views instead use relations from the fundamental to constituents of non-representational reality. This paper argues against the first kind of view.

Discussions of “indeterminacy” customarily distinguish two putative types: semantic indeterminacy (SI)—indeterminacy that’s somehow the product of the semantics of our words/concepts—and metaphysical indeterminacy (MI)—indeterminacy that exists as a mind/language-independent feature of reality itself. A popular and influential thought among philosophers is that all indeterminacy must be SI. In this paper we challenge this thought. Our challenge is guided by the question: What, exactly, does it take for a case of indeterminacy to count as SI? We argue that the only satisfactory (...) answer to this question must take SI to be grounded in a more basic type of MI. We conclude that SI cannot be made sense of without implicating MI. If there’s any indeterminacy, there must be indeterminacy in the world itself. (shrink)

This paper examines the metaphysics of interdependence in the work of the Chinese Buddhist Fazang. The dominant approach of this metaphysics interprets it as a species of metaphysical coherentism wherein everything depends upon everything else, no individual is more fundamental than any other, and so reality itself is non-well-founded in the sense that chains of dependence never terminate. I argue, to the contrary, that Fazang's metaphysics is better interpreted as a novel variety of foundationalism. I argue, as well, using set- (...) and graph-theoretic techniques, that there is a consistent way to model this alternative interpretation, and that this model differs in significant ways from a coherentist model. Inquiries into the nature of scientific modeling have tended to focus their attention on mathematical models and, relatedly, to think of nonconcrete models as mathematical structures. The arguments of this article are arguments for rethinking both tendencies. Nonmathematical models play an important role in the sciences, and our account of scientific modeling must accommodate that fact. One key to making such accommodations, moreover, is to recognize that one kind of thing we use the term ‘model’ to refer to is a (...) collection of propositions. (shrink)

Before engaging with intentionality, the philosopher of mind must consider the intrinsic nature of psychological elements. Conscious states, contrary to ordinary and scientific objects, seem to penetrate each another in such a way that it becomes impossible to enumerate, class or organize through laws the various experiences at stake. In this context, how is a science of consciousness conceivable? How is it possible to apply the epistemological requirements of any science to a domain whose ontological nature contradicts such demands? The (...) paper reconstructs Husserl’s solution to this issue in the Fifth Logical Investigation. I show how his appeal to the mereological framework of the Third Investigation gives him the tools to rationalize the domain of the mind and to establish phenomenology as an authentic science of consciousness. I first demonstrate that the very task of phenomenological investigations is defined in mereological terms. I then reconstruct the issue regarding the inclusion of the intentional object within the act, by exposing the nuances of the Husserlian position in this famous controversy. In a last part, I show how mereological concepts are at the core of the Husserlian reinterpretation of the Brentanian thesis according to which all acts are presentations or based on presentations. I outline ‘human rights cosmopolitanism’, explain the role of equality in giving content to this conception, and defend the liberal view of human rights against the restricted view by considering – and responding to – several arguments for remaining neutral between a range of cultural and ideological perspectives on the demands of social justice and political legitimacy. The slogans of ’68 are deceptively simple and we look to the importance of the political ideas expressed aesthetically as having immediate impact in the late 1960s, but also the underlying Situationist philosophy which influenced them.We also explore the contemporary significance of Situationist theory, especially in the context of (...) the renewal of Marxist thought in the 21st century. This renewed Leftist critique of capitalism emerges as articulated through newer social and political movements of the current times, particularly through the political philosophy of Slavoj Žižek and his auto-critique of the former Yugoslavia. The Pursuit of Existentialism explores how Existentialism has survived and how its key themes and concerns remain integral to continental philosophy today. The Pursuit of Existentialism places the creation of Existentialism - in the work of Sartre, Camus and Beauvoir - in its historical context, assessing how it drew on the work of Nietzsche and Kierkegaard. The book then goes on to focus on the complex heritage of post-Sartrean thinking from Heidegger to today. One of the most focused research programs in the science-religion dialogue that has taken place up to the present is the series of volumes published jointly by the Vatican Observatory and the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences. Originating with the encouragement of Pope John Paul II, this series has produced seven volumes focusing on how divine action can be understood in light of contemporary science. A retrospective volume published in 2008, Scientific Perspectives on Divine Action: Twenty Years of (...) Challenge and Progress, contains articles reviewing the series as a whole. In this article I analyze the series as a whole as well as some of the pivotal problems discussed throughout the series, such as the zero-sum game, scientific “traction,” falsifiability in theories of divine action, and locating special divine action in the physical world. IntroductionAllocation of research funds relies on peer review to support funding decisions, and these processes can be susceptible to biases and inefficiencies. The aim of this work was to determine which past interventions to peer review and decision-making have worked to improve research funding practices, how they worked, and for whom.MethodsRealist synthesis of peer-review publications and grey literature reporting interventions in peer review for research funding.ResultsWe analysed 96 publications and 36 website sources. Sixty publications enabled us to extract stakeholder-specific context-mechanism-outcomes (...) configurations for 50 interventions, which formed the basis of our synthesis. Shorter applications, reviewer and applicant training, virtual funding panels, enhanced decision models, institutional submission quotas, applicant training in peer review and grant-writing reduced interrater variability, increased relevance of funded research, reduced time taken to write and review applications, promoted increased investment into innovation, and lowered cost of panels.ConclusionsReports of 50 interventions in different areas of peer review provide useful guidance on ways of solving common issues with the peer review process. Evidence of the broader impact of these interventions on the research ecosystem is still needed, and future research should aim to identify processes that consistently work to improve peer review across funders and research contexts. This special issue contains papers first presented at a conference that was held 14–16 May 2008 at the Centre for Philosophy and Political Economy at the University of Leicester. Each of the papers takes up ideas from the works of Jacques Derrida and seeks to apply these to questions of business, ethics and business ethics. The papers take up quite different parts of Derrida's works, from his work on the animal, narrative and story, the violence of codification and the limits (...) of responsibility to the aporias of decision. As a whole, the papers offer a dangerous gift to business ethics, of which the stakes are here laid bare – if business ethics is to shrug off its philosophical immaturity and take seriously the work of major European thinkers such as Derrida, then many of its assumed categories, concepts and practices will be shown to shudder and tremble, as it becomes possible to demonstrate how they, one by one, unhinge themselves. Religious Conversion, Serf- Deception, and Pascal's Wager WARD E.JONES BLAISE PASCAL'S Pens~es is a sustained attempt to convert, to lead its reader to form the belief in the articles of faith. Pascal does not hope to convert by a direct presentation of evidence or argument, but rather attempts to induce in the reader a desire for belief in the articles of faith. He hopes that this desire will lead the reader to put herself in a situation in which she (...) will form the belief. Pascal, in other words, wants the reader to take control over her belief, to form it because she wants to do so. We commonly put ourselves in a situation for the purpose of forming beliefs. This is what happens when we choose to go, say, to university; choos- ing to learn is choosing to form beliefs in a given field. Pascal urges something more paradoxical. ~ He wants to induce us to form a particular belief . His dual aim is to induce the unbeliever to want a belief, and then to induce her to do what she can to gain that belief. Now if I want a particular belief, I might place myself in a situation in which nonrational or pragmatic determinants would bring about the belief. I might, that is, visit a hypnotist or a brainwasher, choosing some process which will either directly bring about the desired belief without involving my epistemic capabilities, or one which will diminish my epistemic capabilities. Ο Νίτσε – αλλά και πιο πριν ο Σπινόζα και ο σύγχρονός του Σοπενάουερ -ηταν αυτός που συνόψισε την κληρονομιά της κρίσιμης φιλοσοφίας του 18ου αιώνα δείχνοντας στο έργο του το μέλλον της ψυχολογίας βάθους του εικοστού αιώνα. Από τότε το ασυνείδητο μέρος της ψυχής ασκεί αποφασιστική επιρροή στην ανθρώπινη αντίληψη, αυτή η ιδέα όμως εξελίχθηκε σε μεγάλο βαθμό στη δυτική σκέψη με τον Φρόυντ που την εισήγαγε στο στερέωμα της σύγχρονης πνευματικής ανησυχίας. Ήδη, από τις εισαγωγικές του διαλέξεις ο (...) Αλλά ενώ ήταν ο Φρόυντ που ανασήκωσε το πέπλο των ψευδαισθήσεων και των αυταπατών, ο Jung ήταν εκείνος που ανέλαβε να διερευνήσει πιο συστηματικά τις φιλοσοφικές συνέπειες των ανακαλύψεων της δομικής ψυχολογίας. Εν μέρει αυτό συνέβη επειδή ο Jung είχε μελετήσει την κριτική φιλοσοφία του Κάντ, την οποία θεωρούσε ότι ήταν η μητέρα της σύγχρονης ψυχολογίας, ήταν ενημερωμένος για την επιστημολογικές επισημάνσεις που είχε διατυπώσει ο Carl Popper και βέβαια λόγω της πνευματικής του ιδιοσυγκρασίας ήταν αποστασιοποιημένος από τον επιστημονισμό-θετικισμό που ελλόχευε στη σκέψη του Φρόϋντ. -/- -/- -/- ΑΡΧΕΤΥΠΑ ΚΑΙ ΕΞΕΛΙΞΗ -/- -/- Ο Φρόυντ, τόσο στο Τοτέμ και Ταμπού, όσο και στο Μωυσής και μονοθεϊσμός, επικαλείται σαφώς την έννοια μιας συλλογικής κληρονομιάς αρχέγονων αναμνήσεων. Έκανε λόγο για μεταφορά αρχετυπικών εμπειριών και τραυμάτων μέσω του ασυνειδήτου του ανθρώπινου είδους. Η ίδια ιδέα των κληρονομικών ή φυλετικών αρχέτυπων αναμνήσεων, υπονοείται στην μεταψυχολογία του Πέραν της αρχής της ηδονής, όπου μιλάει για τον Οιδίποδα, για το μύθο του φόνου στην πρωτόγονη ορδή, προβαίνει στην αναλυτική διάκριση της ψυχικής δομής σε Υπερ-Εγώ Εγώ και Αυτό, διερευνά την αντινομική φύση των θεμελιωδών ενορμήσεων του Έρωτα και του Θανάτου, με άλλα λόγια είχε δεχτεί δηλαδή τα ένστικτα ως ουσιαστικά αρχέτυπα. Αλλά οι αναγωγιστικές του υποθέσεις και ο επιστημονισμός-θετικισμός που διαπερνούσε το έργο του, περιόρισαν δραστικά την έρευνα των αρχετύπων και του συλλογικού ασυνειδήτου. Άλλωστε, όπως ο ίδιος ο Φρόυντ αναγνώριζε, επρόκειτο για μυθολογικές κατασκευές, για δραματουργικές μεταφορές και εικονιστικές αλληγορίες, εξίσου ζωτικές για την κατανόηση του ανθρώπινου δράματος όσο και η αγνωστικιστική-επιστημονική κοσμοθεωρία του. -/- Η ιδέα, λοιπόν, του συλλογικού ασυνειδήτου, όπου το ψυχικό υλικό και οι αρχέτυπες εικόνες, όπως τα όνειρα, οι αναμνήσεις, οι σπερματικές εικόνες, ενσωματώνονται και μεταφέρονται από γενιά σε γενιά διαμέσου των χιλιετιών είναι γνώρισμα που χαρακτηρίζει τόσο τη σκέψη του Φρόυντ όσο και του Jung. Η διαφορά έγκειται στο γεγονός ότι η φροϋδική ψυχανάλυση σκόπευε να απαλλάξει την ανθρώπινη ψυχή από την παιδικότητα των μεταφυσικών δοξασιών, αντίθετα η ψυχολογία του Jung αντλούσε στοιχεία από τη θρησκευτική εμπειρία για πολλές από τις βασικές της κατηγορίες και έβλεπε τη θρησκεία ως αναγκαίο εξελικτικό παράγοντα στην ιστορία και στην υγεία της ανθρώπινης ψυχής. Έτσι, η σύγκρουση Φρόυντ και Jung, πέραν από τις διαφορετικότητα των ιδιοσυγκρασιών, μπορούμε να πούμε ότι ήταν μια επιστημολογική διαμάχη ανάμεσα στον αγνωστικισμό και την υπερβατική πίστη, σ΄ένα βαθύτερο επίπεδο μια μονομαχία ανάμεσα σε μια νέα μυθολογία, υποκατάστατο πίστης και σε μυθολογικό σύστημα που ήθελε να επαναφέρει τους αρχαίους θεούς. Ο Φρόυντ επιχείρησε να ξορκίσει τους πανάρχαιους μύθους του ανορθολογισμού και της πίστης στο υπερφυσικό και ο Jung επιχείρησε να αποκαταστήσει την παλιά λατρεία και τον ιερό μύθο, την ‘’ομορφιά και τον σκοπό της αρχαίας θρησκείας’’, όπως υποστήριζε ο ίδιος. Ο Φρόυντ γνήσιο τέκνο του ουμανιστικού ανθρωπισμού πίστευε στο διαφωτισμό του Λόγου και της επιστήμης, παρά το γεγονός ότι θεωρούσε ότι και αυτή η συμβολική μορφή συνιστά εκλογίκευση και εξειδανίκευση, αλλά επέμενε ότι ήταν η μόνη συμβολική μορφή η οποία αυτοελέγχεται και αυτοδιορθώνεται, δηλαδή δεν είναι δογματικό και αυταρχικό γνωστικό σύστημα. Ο Jung, από την άλλη πλευρά, διαβλέπει το υπαρξιακό κενό που επιφέρει η απομάγευση του τεχνικο-επιστημονικού κόσμου στη σύγχρονη ψυχή και πασχίζει να διασώσει τη μαγεία, επαναφέροντας τη μεταφυσικό στοιχείο και τη θρησκευτική ιερότητα της ζωής, όπως αυτή εκφραζόταν στους αρχαίους μύθους. -/- Όλοι οι παραπάνω λόγοι, μεταφυσικοί, ψυχολογικοί, κοινωνιολογικοί και βιογραφικοί, οι οποίοι διαφοροποιούν τον Φρόυντ από τον Jung, μπορούν να συνοψιστούν στη διαφορετική αντίληψη όσον αφορά τον χρόνο. Ο Φρόυντ είχε, κυρίως, μια γραμμική θεώρηση του χρόνου, αναγνώριζε και αποδεχόταν την οριστική και αμετάκλητη θνητότητα του ανθρώπου και το πεπερασμένο των δυνατοτήτων του και πάσχιζε να τον συμφιλιώσει με την αναπόφευκτη εντροπία της δημιουργίας, η οποία θα επαναφέρει τον άνθρωπο στη φυσική κατάσταση της ανόργανης ύλης. Σ΄αυτή την κατάσταση, τη φυσική κατάσταση της ανόργανης ύλης, θα συναντήσει ξανά τη γαλήνη και την ανάπαυση, αυτό το ον, που όσο ζει, δεν εξισορροπεί τη σχέση του με το περιβάλλον, βρίσκεται σε μια κατάσταση μη-ισορροπίας, ασυμμετρίας, κατάσταση που δημιουργεί την επίγνωση του χρόνου, του εγώ-εαυτού και του επικείμενου θανάτου. Το βέλος του χρόνου καθορίζεται από την αυξανόμενη εντροπία, δηλαδή από την κατεύθυνση που αυθόρμητα ακολουθεί ένα σύστημα προσπαθώντας να ισορροπήσει. Το γεγονός ότι ο άνθρωπος νοιώθει ‘’αταίριαστος’’, σε σχέση με το περιβάλλον του, αποτελεί από τη μια το ελατήριο της εξέλιξης και της δημιουργικής αλλαγής του, αλλά από την άλλη βιώνει άφατο πόνο και διχασμούς οδυνηρούς. -/- Ο Jung, είχε, κυρίως, μια κυκλική θεώρηση του χρόνου, είχε ως όραμά του την Ονειρική εποχή των αρχαϊκών εποχών, όπου η φυσική αντιστοιχία του ανθρώπου με τους κύκλους της ζωής – ενσωματωμένη μέσα στη βαθιά ριζωμένη πίστη της μετενσάρκωσης και της ανάστασης-αναγέννησης- καθησύχαζε και κατεύναζε το φόβο του θανάτου. Ο υποσυνείδητος φόβος του θανάτου, αναιρείτο από την αναζωογονητική υπόσχεση του κυκλικού χρόνου, σ΄αυτή την προ-προσωπική κατάσταση του όντος, σύμφωνα με την αφήγηση του Jung, το πλάσμα εκείνο ταίριαζε με το περιβάλλον του και δεν είχε κανένα λόγο να αλλάξει, βρισκόταν σε μια άχρονη κατάσταση ύπαρξης. -/- Εξελικτική ιστορία ή αδιαφοροποίητη επανάληψη του Ίδιου αρχετυπικού κοσμικού προτύπου; Χρόνος ή Άχρονο, Ύλη ή Πνεύμα, Πολιτισμός ή Φύση, αυτές είναι μερικές από τις διαφοροποιήσεις ή και αντιθέσεις που αντιπαραθέτουν τη Φρουδική επιστημολογία με τη Γιουγκιανή και βέβαια ταλαιπωρούν συνολικά τη μεταφυσική, δηλαδή, τη φιλοσοφική ιστορία. Αν δεχτούμε την κυκλική περιστροφή των αρχετυπικών δομών, τότε αποδεχόμαστε τη μεταφυσική της αναγκαιότητας ενός αυτόνομου μοτίβου που επαναλαβάνεται αέναα και δεν γνωρίζει διαφοροποίηση, δηλαδή αποδεχόμαστε μια μεταφυσική της ουσίας ή αλλιώς μια πάγια και αμετάβλητη ανθρώπινη φύση. Αυτό συνδηλώνει μια οντολογία του άχρονου και αιώνιου κόσμου που επαναλαβάνεται αέναα. Από την άλλη, αν δεχτούμε τη γραμμική αντίληψη της εξελικτικής ιστορίας της φύσης, αναγνωρίζουμε συνεχείς διαφοροποιήσεις και αλλαγές που δεν έχουν σχέση με κληρονομημένες διαχρονικές μορφές και μοτίβα συμπεριφοράς της ανθρώπινης εμπειρίας, αυτό σημαίνει ότι αποδεχόμαστε το αέναο γίγνεσθαι της δημιουργίας. -/- Από τη μια η δομή που επαναλαμβάνεται και από την άλλη μια δομή, ανοιχτή και σε διαδικασία δόμησης. Θα λέγαμε ότι οι αρχετυπικές δομές των αμετάβλητων στοιχείων και η εξελικτική φυσική ιστορία των μεταβλητών, συνυπάρχουν, συν-διαμορφώνονται και συν-μεταβάλλονται. Τα αρχέτυπα ως καλούπι μορφοποιούν τις εμπειρίες που μεταβάλλονται και οι εμπειρίες μορφοποιούν το καλούπι που μεταβάλλεται –δίχως καλούπι και εμπειρίες να ταυτίζονται ή να διακρίνονται-, σαν ένα κύκλωμα ανάδρασης που μεταβολίζει τα αντίθετα, τα αναιρεί και τα εγγράφει στον σφαιρικό χωροχρόνο που μεταμορφώνεται απροσδιόριστα. Ενδεχομένως, να μπορούμε να αναγνωρίσουμε έναν συνολικό αρχέτυπο ρυθμό στην κοσμική εξέλιξη της συνείδησης, ξεκινώντας από μια αρχέγονη αδιαφοροποίητη ενότητα, μια συγχωνευτική και συμβιωτική κατάσταση, οδεύουν σε μια σταθερή μετακίνηση προς διαφοροποίηση, σταδιακή ενδυνάμωση της αυτόνομης ανθρώπινης διάνοιας, την αργή σφυρηλάτηση του υποκειμενικού εαυτού που τη συνοδεύει η απογοήτευση για την έλλειψη σύνδεσης με τον κόσμο, την απόσυρση στο ασυνείδητο, την οικουμενική αποξένωση, τη ριζική αποδόμηση και, τέλος, ίσως, την ανάδυση μιας συμμετοχικής συνείδησης ​​που επανασυνδέεται με το συμπαντικό, με την πλήρη σημασία του όρου. -/- -/- Ο ΑΟΡΑΤΟΣ ΡΥΘΜΟΣ -/- Μια ριζική προσέγγιση δεν βλέπει αυτές τις δυνάμεις –τα αρχετυπικά μοτίβα και τις εξελικτικές μεταβολές-, ούτε ως ανταγωνιστικές, ούτε ως συμπληρωματικές, ούτε και τις συνθέτει σε μια αδιαφοροποίητη ενότητα. Αυτό που παρουσιάζεται υπό την όψη της δυαδικότητας κυριαρχείται από έναν ενιαίο και πολλαπλασιαζόμενο ρυθμό: οι δύο εκδηλώσεις ούτε ταυτόσημες είναι, αλλά ούτε διαχωρισμένες, ενεργούν και ενιαία και διαφοροποιημένα. Μπορούμε να αναλάβουμε τις δυαδικές αντιθέσεις και να τις εγγράψουμε στον σφαιρικό χωροχρόνο και στις μεταμορφώσεις του που τον διαφοροποιούν απροσδιόριστα. Ο σφαιρικός χωροχρόνος, οι μεταμορφώσεις ‘’του’’, αδιαχώριστος από το μηδέν, δεν είναι, δημιουργείται και καταστρέφεται ταυτοχρόνως. Ανατρέχοντας πέραν των διακρίσεων, διασχίζοντάς τες, έχουμε να σκεφτούμε το αινιγματικό κέντρο από όπου προέρχονται οι μεταγενέστερες διαφοροποιήσεις και αντιθέσεις, οι οποίες ενέχουν αυτό το κέντρο άσχετα αν το αγνοούν. Το μετέωρο αυτό κέντρο – το διαρθωμένο και εν κινήσει σύνολο – δεν δρά σαν αιτία, πραγματική, μεταφυσική ή μεταφορική, αλλά αυτό το κέντρο, παρόν-απόν, ένα και διαφοροποιημένο μαζί, γνωρίζει πολλαπλές μεταμορφώσεις, χωρίς να μπορούμε να πούμε ποιά διάσταση προηγείται και ποιά έπεται. -/- Θα λέγαμε ότι η εξελικτική διαδικασία εμπλουτισμού της συνείδησης είναι η κατανόηση της εξελικτικής διαδικασίας μέσω της συνείδησης, για να κλείσει ο κύκλος ανάδρασης ανάμεσα στην ύλη και το νου και να διαβούμε το κατώφλι της εξόδου προς το μεγάλο Όλον. Αυτό έχει ήδη συμβεί, ο χωροχρόνος ‘’τυλίγεται γύρω από τον εαυτό του’’ για να σχηματίσει τη σφαίρα της αχρονικότητας, όχι την άχρονη ισορροπία (όπου δεν υπάρχει ούτε παρελθόν, ούτε παρόν, ούτε μέλλον, μια κατάσταση που καταλύεται η Σκέψη, ο Λόγος και η Συνείδηση και γλυστράμε στο βάραθρο του αβυσσαλέου Μηδενός) αλλά τον καθολικό χρόνο της συνείδησης (όπου παρελθόν, παρόν και μέλλον, συνυπάρχουν, ενιαία και τρισδιάστατα, δηλαδή κάθε διάσταση περιλαμβάνει και τις άλλες δύο, όπως εκδηλώνονται συγχρονικά, διαχρονικά και πανχρονικά, τόσο τοπικά, όσο πλανητικά και συμπαντικά). Ακόμα, βέβαια, το ανθρώπινο είδος βρίσκεται σε μια κοιλάδα που το τυλίγει η ομίχλη, ο δρόμος για να φτάσει ψηλά στην κορυφή και να ατενίσει καινούργιους ορίζοντες είναι μακρύς και επικίνδυνος, έχει να αναρριχηθεί γκρεμούς, όμως το μέλλον υπάρχει ήδη στο παρόν, έχει υπάρξει στο παρελθόν. Ο δρόμος για τις απάτητες και αφώτιστες κορυφές διέρχεται μέσα από τον θάνατο του εγώ-εαυτού και στοχεύει την κατεύθυνση της ενιαίας διόρασης του κόσμου. Οι άνθρωποι, που δεν είναι άνθρωποι, αλλά ερευνητές και πειραματιστές ή καλύτερα διαβάτες που οδοιπορούν, δίχως να γνωρίζουν προς ποιά ακριβώς κατεύθυνση στοχεύει η πορεία τους και γιατί, ήδη βρίσκονται σε διαδικασία ανάληψης και ξεπεράσματος, μετατοπισμένοι σ΄έναν τόπο, μη τοπολογικό και σ΄έναν χρόνο, μη χρονολογικό, στον Κόσμο, όχι τον φυσικοεπιστημονικό, τον Κόσμο, ως Εν-Παν, ως Παν-Τίποτα. First the ‘Weismann barrier’ and later on Francis Crick’s ‘central dogma’ of molecular biology nourished the gene-centric paradigm of life, i.e., the conception of the gene/genome as a ‘central source’ from which hereditary specificity unidirectionally flows or radiates into cellular biochemistry and development. Today, due to advances in molecular genetics and epigenetics, such as the discovery of complex post-genomic and epigenetic processes in which genes are causally integrated, many theorists argue that a gene-centric conception of the organism has become problematic. (...) Here, we first explore the causal implications of the following two central dogma-related issues: (1) widespread reverse transcription—arguing for an extension from ‘DNA-genome’ to RNA-encompassing ‘NA-genome’ and, thus, from traditional DNA-centrism to a broader ‘NA-centrism’; and (2) the absence of a mechanism of reverse translation—arguing for the ‘structural primacy’ of NA-sequence over protein in cellular biochemistry. Secondly, we explore whether this latter conclusion can be extended to a ‘functional primacy’ of NA-sequence over protein in cellular biochemistry, which would imply a limited kind of ‘gene/NA-centrism’ confined to the subcellular level of NA/protein-based biochemistry. Finally, we explore the conditions—and their (non)fulfilment—for a more generalised form of gene-centrism extendable to higher levels of biological organisation. We conclude that the higher we go in the biological hierarchy, the more dubious gene-centric claims become. (shrink)

Μόνο η πεπερασμένη γνώση του ανθρώπου κατακερματίζει σε αντικείμενα το Όλον – στο οποίο και ο ίδιος ανήκει – προκειμένου να κατατοπιστεί» -/- C.F.Von Weizsacker -/- Για την κβαντική θεωρία ο Κόσμος είναι ενιαίος και αδιαίρετος, όλα τα στοιχεία που τον συγκροτούν βρίσκονται σε σχέση αλληλεξάρτησης και αλληλοδιασύνδεσης. Η διασύνδεση των πάντων είναι ιδιαίτερα εμφανής στις μη-τοπικές αλληλεπιδράσεις του κβαντικού κόσμου. Το φαινόμενο (...) της κβαντικής συζευξιμότητας, το οποίο μπορεί να θεωρηθεί μια αρχή υπέρθεσης, καθώς και η απορρέουσα έννοια της κβαντομηχανικής μη διαχωρισιμότητας, ως εγγενές στοιχείο της κβαντικής θεωρίας, συνεπάγεται ότι η αδιαίρετη ενότητα του Όλου συνιστά θεμελιώδες γνώρισμα του κβαντικού κόσμου, όμως ούτε η θεωρία ούτε το πείραμα είναι δυνατόν να προσπελάσουν και να αποκαλύψουν τη δομή ή την υφή της Ολότητας. Η Ολότητα είναι ανεξάρτητη από την επιλογή ενός παρατηρητή ή τον προσδιορισμό ενός πειραματικού πλαισίου ή τη μετρητική συσκευή ή από τη δράση του υποκειμένου της γνώσης, της νόησης και των επιστημικών πρακτικών ή ενεργημάτων του. Η Ολότητα αφορά στην περιοχή των κβαντικών συζευγμένων συσχετίσεων, δυνητικοτήτων και κβαντικών υπερθέσεων, στοιχείων που διέπονται από μία μη-Μπούλειαν Λογική Δομή. -/- Θεμελιώδες χαρακτηριστικό της κβαντικής θεωρίας είναι ότι η επίτευξη οποιασδήποτε συνεπούς και έγκυρης εννοιολογικής περιγραφής ή η ικανότητα απόδοσης γνωρισμάτων και ιδιοτήτων σ΄ένα ‘’αντικείμενο’’ μέσω του γλωσσικού συμβολισμού ή η δυνατότητα αναφοράς σε πειραματικά προσπελάσιμα γεγονότα, προϋποθέτει ως αναγκαίο όρο την αποσυσχέτιση και τον διαχωρισμό της Ολότητας του Κόσμου, σε διακριτές οντότητες, οι οποίες αλληλεπιδρούν μεταξύ τους, δεν είναι όμως κβαντικώς συζευγμένες. Στην κβαντομηχανική καλώς ορισμένο αντικείμενο δημιουργείται μέσω μιας τομής Heisenberg, δηλαδή μέσω μιας διαδικασίας αφαίρεσης και προβολής της μη Μπούλειαν Ολιστικής περιοχής σε ένα Μπούλειαν πλαίσιο, το οποίο καθιστά αναγκαία την αποκοπή των κβαντικών συζευγμένων συσχετίσεων από το περιβάλλον του για να αποκτηθεί πρόσβαση στην εμπειρική πραγματικότητα και να συντελεσθεί η περιγραφή της μέτρησης. Δηλαδή η επίτευξη αιτιοκρατικών χωροχρονικών συσχετίσεων, η δυνατότητα χρονικών διασυνδέσεων μεταξύ πρότερου και ύστερου, αιτίας και αποτελέσματος και κατ΄ επέκταση η περιγραφή κάθε διυποκειμενικής εμπειρίας, προϋποθέτουν την διάκριση του Όλου σε γνωρίζον ‘’υποκείμενο’’ και ‘’αντικείμενο’’ προς εξέταση, σε παρατηρητή και παρατηρούμενο. Η κβαντική μηχανική αναγνωρίζει ότι ο παρατηρητής είναι καθεστωτικός παράγοντας στη συγκρότηση του παρατηρούμενου, οι παρατηρητές αρχίζουν σιγά-σιγά να αναγνωρίζουν πλέον τον προθεσιακό (intentional) χαρακτήρα απο τον οποίο διαποτίζεται η γνωσιοθεωρητική πρακτική. Οι παρατηρητές αποκτούν συνείδηση των δημιουργικών δυνατοτήτων τους και συνεπώς του κατασκευαστικού χαρακτήρα των πολλαπλών κόσμων τους, Σ΄αυτό το σημείο θα προβούμε σε αφαιρετικότερους στοχασμούς όσον αφορά την οντολογική φύση της κβαντικής θεωρίας. Η διάκριση του Όλου σε υποκείμενο και αντικείμενο εισάγει τις χωροχρονικές σχέσεις, την αιτιότητα, παράγει τον Λόγο, τη διάκριση θεωρίας και πράξης και εν τέλει το τεχνικο-επιστημονικό πνεύμα που υπολογίζει, μετρά, ποσοτικοποιεί τα μεγέθη και τα χειραγωγεί κατά βούληση. Όλα όσα παράγονται από τη διάκριση του Κόσμου σε Υποκείμενο και Αντικείμενο παράγουν την ανθρωποκεντρική θεώρηση-παράσταση του Κόσμου, τη μυθολογική διαμόρφωση της συνείδησης, τη φαινομενολογική ύπαρξη, την ύπαρξη τινός. Ο Κόσμος που αντιλαμβάνονται οι άνθρωποι συνιστά ένα απόσπασμα του Κόσμου, το Όλον διασπάται σε πολλαπλές προοπτικές (διαφορές φάσης της συνειδησιακής βίωσης του Χρόνου, δηλαδή διαφορές επίπεδων αντίληψης, συνείδησης και ψυχονοοτροπίας) που τον θεωρούν μέσω των εκάστοτε προοπτικών κάθε φορά και τις οποίες αναγορεύουν σε καθολικές προτάσεις και ύπατες αλήθειες ενώ δεν αποτελούν παρά πεπερασμένες διερευνήσεις του απεριόριστου Κόσμου, σχετικές προσεγγίσεις του Απόλυτου………. L’interactivité est communément perçue comme la marque caractéristique des technologies digitales et, par extension, de différentes formes de fictions, de médias ou d’œuvres numériques – de la littérature hypertextuelle et des jeux vidéo au net art. On peut toutefois s’interroger sur le sens précis qu’il convient de donner à cette notion, ainsi que sur les promesses auxquelles elle est souvent associée. À défaut de pouvoir cerner un concept unique et maxi-englobant d’interactivité, nous suggérons qu’il est plus profitable de tenter d’identifier (...) des types et des degrés d’interactivité. Nous tentons de montrer pourquoi cette théorie pluraliste et gradualiste est plus attrayante que d’autres approches développées dans la littérature récente. Nous mettons enfin cette conception à l’épreuve du jeu vidéo, en montrant qu’elle permet de réévaluer le rôle que joue l’interactivité dans ce médium, mais qu’elle met aussi au jour les limitations inhérentes des fictions interactives que l’on y trouve. Many academics and researchers who publish scholarly articles on Plato’s philosophy of education claim that the ultimate educational goal for Plato is simply the acquisition of virtues. While such a claim may not be entirely incorrect, it is nevertheless substantially wanting; for although the acquisition of virtue is no doubt paramount, for Plato it primarily serves as a means to another end. In this paper, I aim to show that, for Plato, the final summit of all educational enterprise is not (...) really to become virtuous but rather to attain the state of becoming like God, and that is, homoiōsis theōi. -/- . The present study aimed to translate and identify the psychometric properties of the Behavioral Emotion Regulation Questionnaire in 315 university students from Lima, Peru, aged 16 to 44 years. The BERQ and the Multicultural Inventory of Trait State Depression were administered for the assessment. Evidence of internal structure validity was obtained through confirmatory factor analysis and exploratory structural equation modeling, while evidence of validity in relation to other variables was obtained through linear regression analysis. The results indicate that the pentafactorial (...) structure is replicated in the Peruvian sample; that adaptive strategies significantly predict eutres, and that maladaptive strategies predict distress; in addition, reliability values were acceptable. At the end, theoretical and practical aspects of the findings and the importance of continuing to provide evidence for its use in different populations and contexts are discussed, taking into account that this is the first time that a Spanish version of the BERQ has been analyzed. Caregiving robots are often lauded for their potential to assist with geriatric care. While seniors can be wise and mature, possessing valuable life experience, they can also present a variety of ethical challenges, from prevalence of racism and sexism, to troubled relationships, histories of abusive behavior, and aggression, mood swings and impulsive behavior associated with cognitive decline. I draw on Confucian ethics, especially the concept of filial piety, to address these issues. Confucian scholars have developed a rich set of theoretical (...) resources for dealing with beloved but imperfect elders, and navigating the challenges of supporting seniors whose ethical commitments are unreliable. These resources provide a way to reconcile two important but conflicting desiderata: to value and care for seniors, but also to clear-mindedly deal with their moral shortcomings. In particular, they articulate a duty to remonstrate with our elders when they err. Confucian filial piety can helpfully inform robot design and use in geriatric care. They can be used to strengthen and protect emotional connections in important relationships, but should not be used to reinforce patient preferences when doing so damages relationships or their ability to act morally. Rather than conceive of patient wellbeing as in tension with moral behavior, and care as a burden for caregivers, not a source of value and meaning, Confucian accounts of filial piety help identify both new areas of concern and new potential in the development of caregiving technologies, ones which see these goods as complementary. I provide a brief précis of Aaron Zimmerman’s book, Belief: A Pragmatic Picture, then explore two possible problems for the view. The first concerns whether the account of belief can successfully intervene in the debate between those who hold emotions are partly constituted by evaluative beliefs and those who deny this. The second concerns whether the view can explain that distinctive form of white ignorance that is manifest in an unwillingness to draw relatively obvious action-guiding beliefs from widely shared information. Thinking about cases of this kind raises the question of whether Zimmerman’s account is problematically individualist, because of downplaying the importance of converging on an account of belief given the role of belief attribution in a suite of critical practices that are essential to communities of inquiry. If we, collectively, must commit to converging on an account of belief, but different accounts serve the interests of different groups, then the meta-level thesis that we should choose an account on pragmatic grounds raises the question of whose interests such an account should serve. In quantum mechanics, the term “creativity” is amplified, since natural events form the constant transition from possibility to reality, according to the ontological probabilism of the Schrödinger equation. The completion of the quantum theory through the concept of the Grand Unified Theories, and especially through the yet incomplete superstring theory, reveals that at the micro level of creation of sub-atomic particles or space, motion literally comes prior to Being and objects are forms of a motion which suggests a constant transition (...) from possibility to reality. In non – linear physics of complex systems, the term “creativity” does not simply correspond to the initial emergence of the universe (big bang) or to the sub-atomic scale processes described by quantum mechanics, the Grand Unified Theories and the superstring theory, but is expanded to all aspects of nature: i.e. physical - chemical, ecological, psychological – mental aspect. So, through the non – linear physics theory, macroscopically viewed beings are constructed, holistic forms of motion, in order for the whole to gain a non reducible (therefore the whole is constantly being produced) ontological meaning which characterizes the operation of the part. Combining the theories of quantum mechanics and relativity, it could be stated that modern physics abolishes the customary perception concerning the natural phenomena, which were concerned as a constant transformation of a fundamental substance. On the contrary, the contemporary description of the natural world by physics and mathematics corresponds to Morphodynamics, i.e. the description of the world as creation of all cosmic shapes from a zero point, on all cosmic levels. From this point of view, zero is understood as the absence of shape, while the notion of an unshaped eternal substance is weakened and does not seem to be able to be justified by the evolution of scientific thought. The “beings” and their “substance” are assimilated to forms of movement that have already been created or that are being created, and constitute motion inside motion. (shrink)

À une métaphysique fermée prétendant découvrir ou identifier des essences fixes et chercher une formule de la nature qui n’aurait pas d’histoire, Goodman oppose une métaphysique ouverte. Les gens font les mondes dans lesquels ils interagissent et habitent et ils les font en utilisant des outils représentationnels. Si l’abandon du point de vue du spectateur suppose que nous œuvrons, en tant que locuteurs et producteurs d’outils symboliques, à la forme du monde que nous habitons, et si l’amélioration de ces outils (...) est à notre portée, il s’agit d’imaginer des améliorations qui conduisent à des transformations efficaces, à la fois cognitivement et politiquement. Cet article entraîne la théorie goodmanienne du worldmaking du côté de l’ingénierie conceptuelle. En dernière analyse, il entreprend de montrer ce que l’ingénierie conceptuelle aurait à gagner à redéployer la théorie goodmanienne de la projectibilité (degrés de projectibilité, implantation, projectibilité héritée).
