In the present work we try to return to the problem of Merleau-Ponty’s historic and political evaluation of action in the light of his accounts in Humanism and Terror and their updating in the last years by commentators such as Alexandre Hubeny, Leonardo Eiff and Jérôme Melançon. We will present some arguments against two very close related theses by Merleau-Ponty: that of the “objective” evaluation of action, which holds that the subjects behavior can be described as constituing a (...) “betrayal” or a “crime” independently of any attribution of intentions to the agents and the thesis of the “objective” responsibility of the agent, that is, the tenet that affirms that the historic and political subjects can be “responsible” or “guilty” for an outcome of their actions, that they cannot have foreseen or can be the exact opposite for what they intended. Despite its long tradition in social psychology, we consider that Cognitive Dissonance Theory presents serious flaws concerning its methodology which question the relevance of the theory, limit breakthroughs, and hinder the evaluation of its core hypotheses. In our opinion, these issues are mainly due to operational and methodological weaknesses that have not been sufficiently addressed since the beginnings of the theory. We start by reviewing the ambiguities concerning the definition and conceptualization of the term cognitive dissonance. We then review the (...) ways it has been operationalized and we present the shortcomings of the actual paradigms. To acquire a better understanding of the theory, we advocate a stronger focus on the nature and consequences of the cognitive dissonance state itself. Next, we emphasize the actual lack of standardization, both in the ways to induce cognitive dissonance and to assess it, which impairs the comparability of the results. Last, in addition to reviewing these limits, we suggest new ways to improve the methodology and we conclude on the importance for the field of psychology to take advantage of these important challenges to go forwards. How many words—and which ones—are sufficient to define all other words? When dictionaries are analyzed as directed graphs with links from defining words to defined words, they reveal a latent structure. Recursively removing all words that are reachable by definition but that do not define any further words reduces the dictionary to a Kernel of about 10% of its size. This is still not the smallest number of words that can define all the rest. About 75% of the Kernel turns (...) out to be its Core, a “Strongly Connected Subset” of words with a definitional path to and from any pair of its words and no word's definition depending on a word outside the set. But the Core cannot define all the rest of the dictionary. The 25% of the Kernel surrounding the Core consists of small strongly connected subsets of words: the Satellites. The size of the smallest set of words that can define all the rest—the graph's “minimum feedback vertex set” or MinSet—is about 1% of the dictionary, about 15% of the Kernel, and part-Core/part-Satellite. But every dictionary has a huge number of MinSets. The Core words are learned earlier, more frequent, and less concrete than the Satellites, which are in turn learned earlier, more frequent, but more concrete than the rest of the Dictionary. In principle, only one MinSet's words would need to be grounded through the sensorimotor capacity to recognize and categorize their referents. In a dual-code sensorimotor/symbolic model of the mental lexicon, the symbolic code could do all the rest through recombinatory definition. (shrink)

L’interactivité est communément perçue comme la marque caractéristique des technologies digitales et, par extension, de différentes formes de fictions, de médias ou d’œuvres numériques – de la littérature hypertextuelle et des jeux vidéo au net art. On peut toutefois s’interroger sur le sens précis qu’il convient de donner à cette notion, ainsi que sur les promesses auxquelles elle est souvent associée. À défaut de pouvoir cerner un concept unique et maxi-englobant d’interactivité, nous suggérons qu’il est plus profitable de tenter d’identifier (...) des types et des degrés d’interactivité. Nous tentons de montrer pourquoi cette théorie pluraliste et gradualiste est plus attrayante que d’autres approches développées dans la littérature récente. Nous mettons enfin cette conception à l’épreuve du jeu vidéo, en montrant qu’elle permet de réévaluer le rôle que joue l’interactivité dans ce médium, mais qu’elle met aussi au jour les limitations inhérentes des fictions interactives que l’on y trouve. Being diagnosed with a disease is like being thrust onto a new path, a biographical bifurcation akin to a mourning process, bringing in its wake a shattering of the social self. The passage from an ideal of perfect health to a state of illness introduces various fractures into the individual's life course, leading to a process of biographization. To illustrate this, the life story of a diabetic person is used to analyze various biographical turning points. The analysis of the subjectivation (...) process highlights different reconstructions of the self through the experience of therapeutic education, seen as a relational space of in-between identities. This paper analyzes the problem of implication and attempts to characterize conditionals by a criterion of adequacy. A definition of implication based on the notion of limit of an infinite sequence is proposed.

ArgumentIn this article, we trace shifting narratives of trauma within psychiatric, neuroscience, and environmental epigenetics research. We argue that two contemporary narratives of trauma – each of which concerns questions of time and psychopathology, of the past invading the present – had to be stabilized in order for environmental epigenetics models of suicide risk to be posited. Through an examination of these narratives, we consider how early trauma came to be understood as playing an etiologically significant role in the development (...) of suicide risk. Suicide, in these models, has come to be seen as a behavior that has no significant precipitating event, but rather an exceptional precipitating neurochemical state, whose origins are identified in experiences of early traumatic events. We suggest that this is a part of a broader move within contemporary neurosciences and biopsychiatry to seelife as post: seeing life as specific form of post-traumatic subjectivity. (shrink)

O presente artigo tem como objetivo, a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica desenvolvida no âmbito do doutorado em Educação, analisar as ideias pedagógicas de Johann Friedrich Herbart (1776-1841) e as possíveis contribuições do mesmo para a construção da masculinidade moderna. Herbart é um dos precursores da Pedagogia enquanto ciência organizada, associando diretamente os conhecimentos da filosofia, da educação e da psicologia para formular um aparato teórico que respondesse às transformações dos séculos XVII e XVIII, notadamente o Iluminismo Francês e a ascensão (...) da burguesia industrial, por isso, consideramos que o mesmo marca profundamente a Modernidade, tanto seu projeto pedagógico quanto sua concepção de masculinidade. Para melhor compreender a temática que propomos neste trabalho, dividimos o artigo em quatro seções: (a) na introdução localizamos os estudos sobre as masculinidades e o marco temporal deste trabalho; (b) em seguida expomos os percurso metodológico bibliográfico baseado no desenho circular de aproximações sucessivas às fontes; (c) na terceira analisamos o contexto histórico das formulações de Herbart, a organização sintética de suas ideias e sua proposta pedagógica; (d) por fim estabelecemos relações entre o projeto educacional do autor e as suas contribuições a masculinidade moderna. Concluímos que o pensamento de Herbat, pela abrangência de suas formulações, se configura como um dos pilares da masculinidade hegemônica. (shrink)

É legítimo nos perguntarmos sobre o estatuto próprio da filosofia em sua generalidade? Penso que não. No entanto, creio ainda ser legítimo nestes nosso tempo ultramoderno nos questionarmos acerca do espírito de nossa era ou ao menos de uma filosofia específica que nos diga muito a respeito de nós mesmos e de nosso período histórico. Afunilando mais este mote pergunto: qual o espírito da filosofia kantiana? Kant, como todos sabem, é o responsável pela virada teórica na filosofia moderna, re-significando-a de (...) modo a separar o que ele chama de dogmas e conhecimento, daquilo que é mero pensamento. Desse modo, proponho uma investigação acerca do espírito da filosofia kantiana, a partir de uma grande pista dada pelo próprio autor para tal, a saber, o conceito de filosofia, contido em sua Lógica de 1800. Com isso, pretendo mostrar que a filosofia kantiana em seu espírito não está dissociada da vida cotidiana. (shrink)

O presente artigo pretende demonstrar como são construídas as categorias matáveis a partir de dois autores contemporâneos que detém propósitos próximos, mas diferentes abordagens, como é o caso do antropólogo francês René Girard e do filósofo político italiano Giorgio Agamben. Para isso, dividiremos a nossa análise em dois campos: antropológico e político. No primeiro momento, faremos uso da teoria girardiana para exemplificar como os sacrifícios - bode expiatório -, recorrentes nas comunidades tradicionais, servem de alicerce para a compreensão desse mecanismo (...) em uma diferente dinâmica: a política. Com isso, iremos através de Agamben, descortinar, por sua vez, como o conceito de homo sacri atua intrinsecamente ao agir político, principalmente quando o seu uso é legitimado pelo mais poderoso ente social: o Estado. Por fim, pretendemos relacionar os conceitos apresentados por esses autores - Girard e Agamben - em uma ótica contemporânea através de pesquisas que especifiquem como atua o governo na geopolítica brasileira. In developmental lexical–gustatory synesthesia, specific words can trigger taste perceptions and these synesthetic associations are generally stable. We describe a case of multilingual lexical–gustatory synesthesia for whom some synesthesias were bidirectional as some tastes also triggered auditory word associations. Evoked concurrents could be gustatory but also tactile sensations. In addition to words and pseudowords, many voices were effective inducers, suggesting increased connections between cortical taste areas and both voice-selective and language-selective areas. Lasting changes in some evoked tastes occurred during childhood (...) suggesting that some plasticity can be present after the initial learning of associations. Inducers were often linked to taste concurrents phonologically or semantically, but also through identifiable childhood episodes . Several inducers were phonologically linked to episodic inducers suggesting a process of secondary acquisition for many inducers. Implications of these observations are discussed. (shrink)

This study examined the effect of the pique technique preceded by a disrupting process. Passersby in the street were asked for money, either for a common amount of change (control) or 37 cents (pique technique). In half of the cases, the requester added a disrupting sentence at the beginning of the request. Results showed that the pique technique alone and the disrupting technique alone increased compliance with the request. Adding a first disrupting sentence to the pique also increased compliance compared (...) with the other three conditions. These results support the theoretical explanation that the initial disrupting sentence associated with the pique could reduce the influence of the refusal script activated by the money request. L’article vise à éclairer la contradiction apparente que recèle le syntagme d’univers pluraliste. Il s’agit de déterminer « où » se situe la pluralité : si elle est seulement épistémique, alors on reste attaché à une conception moniste du monde, où le multiple est toujours en droit résorbable dans une unité sous-jacente. Inversement, si le pluralisme est radical et intégral, alors se perd l’unité sémantique « monde » dont il a pourtant besoin, ne serait-ce que pour poser plusieurs mondes. Or, (...) selon James, c’est l’alternative elle-même qui est trompeuse : l’univers se distingue aussi bien de l’absolu que de la multiplicité pure. Cette réponse s’adosse en dernière instance à une « désubstantialisation » des termes du débat et, partant, à la reconception pragmatique de l’unité, i.e. la substitution à la question ontologique qui commande la cosmologie rationnelle de la question fonctionnelle du devenir. Mais ce pluralisme ne peut prospérer que de conserver la notion de donné, à condition de la dissocier de la problématique transcendantale de laquelle elle est issue : la pluralité des modes descriptifs, loin d’être le corrélat naturel d’une pluralité de réalités, a pour condition de possibilité la neutralité catégoriale du donné – que restitue le concept jamesien d’expérience pure. Apesar de as políticas públicas de apoio a inovação priorizarem o desenvolvimento das organizações, é necessário entender que seu impacto dá voz à população e possibilita inovações capazes de impactar de forma positiva o desenvolvimento social regional. Assim, este artigo tem como objetivo avaliar a importância da formulação de políticas regionais e iniciativas voltadas à inovação e impacto destas sobre atores sociais. Para tanto, a pesquisa foi desenvolvida a partir de pesquisa bibliográfica, valendo-se de consulta à periódicos e livros das (...) áreas de ciências sociais e ciências sociais aplicadas para contemplar os objetivos de pesquisa. Após o levantamento teórico, evidencia-se que a luta pelo poder e por recursos entre os grupos sociais é o cerne da formulação de políticas públicas, sendo essa luta mediada por instituições políticas e econômicas que levam as políticas públicas para certa direção e privilegiam alguns grupos em razão de outros. No que tange o impacto social de políticas públicas voltadas à inovação, verificou-se que a ação conjunta de empresas e outros agentes locais ocasiona a criação de diferentes tipos de instituições de ensino, pesquisa e prestação de serviços que impactam no aumento da capacidade de inovação do sistema e as externalidades positivas locais. If European metropolises witnessed the development, throughout the 19th century, of various forms of concentrationary assistance and radical isolation through penal colonies, colonial space was the site of an even more explicit formulation and experimentation with the creation and the exclusion of of an undesirable human surplus, notably in South Asia, where the social system of castes could provide powerful ideological foundations for the colonial thinking on exclusion. Este artigo reflete sobre a desmaterialização de um tipo documental e seus arranjos no contexto digital, observando que a desmaterialização do álbum sonoro é marcada por um fenômeno nomeado de vácuo informacional no contexto do serviço de música digital Spotify. A desmaterialização de tipos documentais mostra-se uma realidade consolidada em tempos de informação digital. Com as inovações tecnológicas, mudanças culturais, comportamentais e todo um arcabouço conceitual e epistémico atrelado a essas inovações floresce e se desenvolve num curto espaço de tempo. (...) Revisita a noção de documento e neodocumentação, adotando-se a premissa Neodocumentalista a respeito do valor contextual que a materialidade do documento oferece. A pesquisa caracteriza-se como exploratória, bibliográfica, documental e telematizada e utiliza como corpus de pesquisa 112 álbuns sonoros da extinta gravadora pernambucana Rozenblit. Constata-se que a desmaterialização dos álbuns sonoros tem como característica principal o comprometimento da natureza ontológica do documento, da marca distintiva deste enquanto documento: a sua natureza informativa. Résumé L’analyse quantitative de l’histoire culturelle a été ouverte par la mise à disposition de corpus de masse tel que celui de Google fbooks (500 milliards de mots, 5 millions d’ouvrages, soit environ 4% de la littérature mondiale) et a été popularisé sous le nom de « culturonomics ». Elle s’ouvre désormais aux chercheurs, en promettant un accès profond aux faits culturels et à leurs évolutions qui affleurent à travers leurs traces textuelles dans les corpus textuelles numérisées. Encore faut-il pouvoir (...) interroger ces corpus dont la taille et la nature posent des problèmes scientifiques nouveaux, leur dimension les rendant illisibles directement et mettant échec les méthodes de fouille et les outils traditionnels d’analyse statistique des données en imposant des méthodes statistiques nouvelles et le saut vers des formes d’intelligence visuelles originales. Dans le cadre d’un projet mené entre le Labex « Obvil » de Paris-Sorbonne et le Literary Lab de Stanford sur l’histoire de l’idée de littéraire (la définition de la littérature comme mot, comme concept et comme champ), et visant à produire une histoire empirique de la littérature, nous avons mené depuis deux ans des expériences de fouille d’un corpus de critique littéraire de 1618 titres, 140 millions de mots (dont plus de 50 000 occurrences du lemme « littérature ») de la fin de l’Ancien Régime à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En présentant des exemples développés dans cette première expérimentation à grande échelle de mesure de l’histoire des idées, on présentera les méthodes de text mining contemporaines en essayant d’éprouver leur pertinence heuristique et de leur capacité à faire remonter des données signifiantes pour l’histoire et la théorie littéraire. On fera l’hypothèse que toute enquête quantitative sérieuse mobilise désormais non une échelle intermédiaire standard et immédiatement lisible, mais le maniement d’outils statistiques dont l’interprétation en sciences humaines pose des problèmes particuliers qui, paradoxalement, ne peuvent être résolus que par leur articulation étroite à du close reading et à des mesures fines. Cybernétique et psychanalyse, deux mots qui formeraient presque un oxymore. Pourtant cet ouvrage propose de repenser les liens entre la psychanalyse et l'informatique. Il révèle que les apports de la psychanalyse à l'épistémologie et l'histoire de l'informatique sont restés enfouis depuis près de soixante ans, alors même qu'elle fut une des premières disciplines à conceptualiser l'informatique, qui ne portait pas encore ce nom. Il s'agit alors à la fois de montrer l'apport pour la psychanalyse des recherches de l'informatique naissante, et (...) la particularité de l'approche psychanalytique de l'informatique, plus particulièrement chez Jacques Lacan. Cet ouvrage propose des outils et des concepts au lecteur pour prendre des distances par rapport à la trop simple opposition entre les sciences cognitives, voire les neurosciences, qui seraient la psychologie à l'ère du numérique, et la psychanalyse contemporaine. A commonly held view is that giving to the poor is superogatory i.e., that while it is a good thing to do, it is not morally wrong for us not to do so. This essay sets out to show that for the affluent in the world giving to the poor is not superogatory but is rather a moral obligation. The paper critiques Singer's famous argument in ‘Famine, Affluence and Morality’ and finds that although the argument is a cogent and powerful (...) one, Singer, when trying to apply the argument to how we should act, somewhat skews the argument's real implications. Furthermore, it is argued that a cosmopolitan concern for the global poor is the morally correct response to have, and the author defends this view by examining the proper effect that aspects like geographical distance, nationality, reciprocity, and the nature of the global economic system should have on our moral considerations. In conclusion, it is argued that since the way that each person utilises his/her resources is a reflection of what he/she values, then for many of us in positions of affluence, in order to be moral, much more should be done in order to help those experiencing dire, life-threatening poverty across the globe.1. We present a version of system Fω, called image, in which the layer of type constructors is essentially the traditional one of Fω, whereas provability of types is classical. The proof-term calculus accounting for the classical reasoning is a variant of Barbanera and Berardi’s symmetric λ-calculus.We prove that the whole calculus is strongly normalising. For the layer of type constructors, we use Tait and Girard’s reducibility method combined with orthogonality techniques. For the layer of terms, we use Barbanera and Berardi’s (...) method based on a symmetric notion of reducibility candidate. We prove that orthogonality does not capture the fixpoint construction of symmetric candidates.We establish the consistency of image, and relate the calculus to the traditional system Fω, also when the latter is extended with axioms for classical logic. “Poder sem solidariedade” tem como objetivo abordar um texto emblemático do Novo Testamento, isto é, Marcos 10,32-45 com as ferramentas teóricas da teologia bíblica e da teoria foucaultiana a respeito do poder. A metodologia utilizada é de ordem bibliográfica, a partir do diálogo com textos específicos que exploram o texto de Marcos, a sociedade mediterrânea do primeiro século e textos específicos de Foucault sobre o poder. Percebe-se conclusivamente que ao mesmo tempo em que os discípulos de Jesus procuram reproduzir as (...) relações de poder, Jesus propõe um contra-discurso a fim de vislumbrar o poder como solidariedade a favor da comunidade. A intervenção de Jesus introduzirá um discurso de renúncia à aspiração ao poder assim como uma opção fundamental pelo serviço e pela solidariedade. Diante de dois modelos de concepção e prática do poder veremos uma proposta de inversão dos valores que vigoravam em uma sociedade marcada visceralmente pelas ambições. O jogo do poder também estava presente na comunidade de Jesus e seus discípulos procuravam reproduzir aquilo que já era comum ao tecido social. Palavras-chave : Poder. Autoridade. Cristianismo. Domínio.“Powers without solidarity” aims to address an emblematic text of the New Testament - Mark 10.32-45 - by using the theoretical tools of biblical theology and Foucault's theory about power. The methodology used is bibliographic out of a dialogue with specific texts that explore the text of Mark, the first-century Mediterranean society and specific texts by Foucault on power. It can be conclusively seen that while the disciples of Jesus seek to reproduce power relations, Jesus proposes a counter-discourse in order to view the power as solidarity in benefit of his community. Jesus´ intervention will introduce a speech that disclaims the aspiration to power and offers a fundamental option for service and solidarity. Given these two models of conception and practice of power, we can see a proposal that reverses the values ​​that prevailed in a society viscerally marked by ambition. The power game was also present in Jesus´ community and his disciples tried to reproduce what was already common to the social culture. Keywords : Power. Authority. Christianity. Society. Domain. Professor Koyre;'s thesis might be summed up as a claim that when one is seeking to explain the scientific revolution, attention must be concentrated on the philosophical outlook of the scientist and away from speculative theories. Several advocates of the lively field of “metaphysics of science” have recently argued that a naturalistic metaphysics should be based solely on current science, and that it should replace more traditional, intuition-based, forms of metaphysics. The aim of the present paper is to assess that claim by examining the relations between metaphysics of science and general metaphysics. We show that the current metaphysical battlefield is richer and more complex than a simple dichotomy between “metaphysics of science” and “traditional metaphysics”, and (...) that it should instead be understood as a three dimensional “box”, with one axis distinguishing “descriptive metaphysics” from “revisionary metaphysics”, a second axis distinguishing a priori from a posteriori metaphysics, and a third axis distinguishing “commonsense metaphysics”, “traditional metaphysics” and “metaphysics of science”. We use this three-dimensional figure to shed light on the project of current metaphysics of science, and to demonstrate that, in many instances, the target of that project is not defined with enough precision and clarity. The elucidation of the gauge principle ‘‘is the most pressing problem in current philosophy of physics’’ said Michael Redhead in 2003. This paper argues for two points that contribute to this elucidation in the context of Yang–Mills theories. (1) Yang–Mills theories, including quantum electrodynamics, form a class. They should be interpreted together. To focus on electrodynamics is potentially misleading. (2) The essential role of gauge and BRST symmetries is to provide a local field theory that can be quantized and would (...) be equivalent to the quantization of the non-local reduced theory. If this is correct, the gauge symmetry is significant, not so much because it implies ontological consequences, but because it allows us to quantize theories that we would not be able to quantize otherwise. Thus, in the context of Yang–Mills theories, it is essentially a pragmatic principle. This does not seem to be the case for the gauge symmetry in general relativity. (shrink)

Alexandre Kabera L’Ubuntu est un concept issu des cultures africaines qui signifie « humanité » ou « bonté » en référence à la solidarité et à la fraternité. Il met l’accent sur l’importance de la communauté dans la vie des individus et sur la nécessité de prendre en compte les besoins des autres dans nos propres décisions et actions. Dans le récit de la guérison du paralytique en Marc 2,1-12, on peut voir comment les quatre porteurs et la foule (...) montrent de l’Ubuntu en aidant le paralytique à accéder à Jésus pour recevoir son pardon et sa guérison. Jésus lui-même montre de l’Ubuntu en pardonnant au paralytique et en le guérissant, mettant ainsi ses besoins avant les règles et les préjugés de la société. L’application du concept d’Ubuntu en exégèse peut donc offrir une perspective non occidentale sur le texte biblique en mettant en lumière les valeurs de communauté et de compassion présentes dans le récit. Many believe that the treatment-enhancement distinction marks an important ethical boundary that we should use to shape public policy on biomedical interventions. A common justification for this purported normative force appeals to the idea that, whereas treatments respond to genuine medical needs, enhancements can only satisfy mere preferences or “expensive tastes”. This article offers a critique of that justification, while still accepting the TED as a conceptual tool, as well as some of the key ethical axioms endorsed by its proponents. (...) Using examples drawn from preventive medicine, biomedical technology, and other categories of biomedical interventions, I then go on to challenge both the presupposition of a fundamental dichotomy between treatments and enhancements, and the assumption that enhancements – barring rare exceptions – cannot serve legitimate medical needs. Finally, I consider some ways in which supporters of the TED might try re-formulating the distinction to blunt the force of my critique. I conclude that such a move cannot fully succeed, and that while the TED does have some degree of normative force, it nevertheless cannot play the role that its advocates expect from it. Seeking to justify a general presumption against enhancements based on the rationale I critique here would mean ignoring their various potential benefits, including medical or therapeutic, and would reflect a prejudice – which I refer to as “treatment fetishism”.
