Certains ont proclamé la " fin de l'Histoire ". Ne serait-ce pas plutôt celle de la philosophie politique moderne qu'il conviendrait de guetter? Depuis cinq siècles, en effet, l'action politique a eu pour objet l'institution et la consolidation de la souveraineté, tandis que la philosophie politique structurait ses principes de gouvernement à partir de ce concept : penser la politique c'était penser la souveraineté. Or la souveraineté, née en Europe, forgée à travers les guerres qui donnèrent aux peuples le sentiment (...) de leur particularité, s'y achève sous nos yeux, en une Union des peuples fondée désormais sur la paix, à la suite d'un génocide suicidaire. Pour penser l'achèvement, la philosophie politique ne saurait plus se contenter de répéter ses affirmations communes sur la volonté du peuple, l'indivisibilité de la république, la dictature du prolétariat et les droits de l'homme. Aucune n'a pu fonder l'existence libre de la multitude : elles ont soit révélé dans l'histoire leur absolue contradiction en allant, parfois, jusqu'au crime, soit permis d'ouvrir le chemin de la vie libre sans être capables, cependant, de le tracer jusqu'au bout. Ces catégories ressortissent à un monde et à sa fable que les temps présents abandonnent au passé. Le problème constitutif de la philosophie politique - les conditions de la vie libre - n'a pas disparu pour autant, mais la solution nouvelle est à inventer. Une double tâche s'impose désormais : montrer en quoi la souveraineté est achevée et ce que cela signifie, jusque dans les chemins divergents qu'empruntent l'Europe et les Etats-Unis ; formuler des propositions sérieuses capables d'orienter le débat politique de notre temps quelle moralité nouvelle, autre que la souveraineté, inventer pour des peuples européens qui, faute de pouvoir encore se faire la guerre, se sont du coup, sans autre projet, abandonnés au marché? Le présupposé éthique et politique de la modernité veut que la " nature " soit extérieure aux humains. Les hommes la considèrent comme leur " environnement ", comme si les choses de la nature étaient conçues aux seules fins de les servir. Telle est l'origine de la crise écologique de notre temps : le projet politique et technique d'asservissement d'une nature fantasmatique vouée à satisfaire nos besoins. L'État moderne résulte donc d'un prétendu droit selon lequel nous devons nous organiser en (...) vue de la lutte contre la nature et non d'une vie en harmonie avec elle. Ainsi pensée, la nature n'est plus qu'un vaste magasin où nous puisons notre nourriture. Quant à sa " valorisation ", elle se réduit à la marchandisation capitaliste de ses ressources. Pour faire face à la crise, nous devons requalifier les fondements politiques et moraux de nos façons de penser et d'agir, et substituer au droit naturel un droit biotique permettant une réforme radicale de la relation qu'entretiennent la cité des hommes et la nature. Car, en réalité, la crise n'est pas écologique mais politique : c'est celle des fondements essentiels de la cité. Plutôt qu'une politique des hommes sur les choses de la nature, il nous faut concevoir une cosmopolitique de la nature. (shrink)

On trouve chez Héraclite la première — et décisive — élaboration du lien unissant le concept à l'action : il met ensemble Logos et Polemos, le discours et la guerre. Parcourir, comme le fait ce livre, le devenir de la parole de raison (logos) dans son rapport avec le conflit dans les choses, c'est à la fois comprendre le statut de ce genre particulier de pensée qu'est le logos philosophique et le caractère propre de la pensée des Européens. Né en (...) Grèce d'Asie, le logos philosophique s'est finalement rétabli en Europe occidentale, après une longue éclipse médiévale, à la faveur d'une vaste migration à laquelle, d'Orient en Occident, ont pris part juifs, chrétiens et musulmans. Il en est ainsi parce que le logos des origines — logos philosophique d'Héraclite à Marc Aurèle — a fait l'objet d'un détournement théologique : le logos-raison est devenu, au tournant des Ie et IIe siècles de notre ère, le Christ-Logos. Dès lors, les apologètes chrétiens ont pratiqué un vaste larcin en élaborant la figure paradoxale d'un logos de l'ineffable : ce n'est plus le raisonnement qui établit le vrai, c'est la révélation. Ils l'ont construit non comme religion mais comme "philosophie chrétienne", polémiquant ainsi contre le logos "païen". Une opération qui substitua, aux temps médiévaux, le théologico-politique à la philosophie. En pistant les effets politiques du larcin chrétien sur le devenir des Européens, ce livre manifeste à la fois l'essence polémique de la philosophie, et comment les Européens ont rejeté, notamment au sein des universités de Paris et d'Oxford à partir du XIIIe siècle, la captation chrétienne du logos héraclitéen. Modern political theory begins with the rise of the philosophical concept and practice of sovereignty in the sixteenth century. Over the course of the next several centuries, sovereignty was generalized as _the _form of the modern state—eventually, there was no state that was not sovereign, and there was no understanding of the state that did not depend upon the notion of sovereignty. Truth-talk exhibits certain features that render it philosophically suspect and motivate a deflationary account. I offer a new formulation of deflationism that explains truth-talk in terms of semantic pretense. This amounts to a fictionalist account of truth-talk but avoids an error-theoretic interpretation and its resulting incoherence. The pretense analysis fits especially well with deflationism’s central commitment, and it handles truth-talk’s unusual features effectively. In particular, this approach suggests an interesting strategy for dealing with the Liar paradox. This version of deflationism (...) has advantages over the formulations currently available in the literature, mainly because it offers a more satisfying account of the generalizing role deflationary views take as truth-talk’s central function. Explaining the notion of truth in terms of pretense generates some special concerns, but none we cannot address through careful consideration of how pretense operates in truth-talk and of the attitudes instances of pretending involve. Context: Practice-based design research is becoming more widely recognized in academia, including at doctoral level, yet there are arguably limited options for dissemination beyond the traditional conference format of paper-based proceedings, possibly with an exhibition or “demonstrator” component that is often non-archival. Further, the opportunities afforded by the traditional-format paper presentations is at times at odds with practice-based methodologies being presented. Purpose: We provide a first-hand descriptive account of developing and running a new international conference with an experimental format that (...) aims to support more analogously the dissemination of practice-based design research. Method: Our approach herein is broadly interpretative, phenomenological and critically reflective in orientation, to analyze our own experiential insights from the conference conception, through to the event itself and post-conference reflections, alongside the reflections fed back by conference delegates. Results: We have found the roundtable format continues to function well for creating a discursive interactional context. However issues arose around the crucial nature of the session chair’s role in enabling rich and multi-voiced discussion and how presenters’, organizers’ and delegates’ voices were captured and documented, with implications for further developing the conference design. Looking forward, there are also questions raised about: balancing the stringency of a rigorous review process with provision of an encouraging platform for early-career researchers; and balancing the need for clear criteria and formatting standards with the “openness” of the submission template and formatting guidelines and/or writing. This includes designers who are new to research cultures. It should also appeal to those working in interdisciplinary research in collaboration with design practitioners (but who may not be practitioners themselves. The conference aims to foster and support a burgeoning “research through design” academic community and to provide a fitting dissemination platform for this community. We hope that the conference will encourage academic communities to give proper consideration to the concept of design as a knowledge-generating activity. Constructivist content: Knowledge about design research is generated from meaningful interaction between people and artifacts as part of the unfolding conference experience. The organizational features of the conference aim to support knowledge dissemination through dialogical relations between people and things in particular contexts of interaction. (shrink)

Arthur Prior (1914-69) is regarded as New Zealand's greatest 20th-century philosopher. Until World War II, Prior seriously considered a career as a religious journalist, especially when traveling and living on the Continent and in England with his first wife. During these years, Prior wrote widely on theology and contemporary Christianity. In his correspondence with Ursula Bethell and Hugh Teague, Prior discusses in detail his religious and theological thoughts, including his shift from formal theological study into a world of journalism and (...) philosophy. These previously unknown letters, which cover the years from 1936 to 1941, chronicle a substantial part of a fascinating period in Prior's development, both theologically and philosophically, and have been transcribed and annotated for this volume.
