    The Logos of the Communicating Silence.Jaromir Brejdak - 2024 - Ruch Filozoficzny 79 (4):217-235.
The following thesis is an attempt to establish the communicative dimensions of silence. In it I put forward a thesis in the spirit of Martin Buber's philosophy of dialogue and Max Scheler's phenomenology of emotion, according to which true dialogue does not convey specific content, but modes of existence born of the experience of presence. This kind of normative transmission of existence makes communication a communion. Underlying tacit communication are various forms of affection, through which emotionality becomes one of the (...)

  2. Socrates’ Mythological Role in Plato’s Theaetetus.Yip-Mei Loh - 2017 - International Journal of Humanities and Social Science 11 (2):343-346.
Plato, as a poet, employs muthos extensively to express his philosophical dialectical development, so the majority of his dialogues are comprised of muthoi. We cannot separate his muthos from his philosophical thought, since the former has great influence in the latter. So the methodology of this paper is first to discuss the dialogue "Theaetetus" to find out why he compares Socrates to the Greek goddess Artemis; then his concept of Maieutikē will be investigated. At the beginning of Plato’s "Theaetetus", Socrates (...)

The Use and Meaning of the Past in Plato.Maurizio Migliori - 2021 - Plato Journal 21:43-58.
This essay is based on two premises. The first concerns the vision of writing proposed by Plato in Phaedrus and especially the conception of philosophical writing as a maieutic game. The structurally polyvalent way in which Plato approaches philosophical issues also emerges in the dialogues. The second concerns the birth and the development of historical analysis in parallel with the birth of philosophy. On this basis the text investigates a series of data about the relationship between Plato (...)

Person, Polis, planet: Essays in applied philosophy * by David Schmidtz.E. Telfer - 2009 - Analysis 69 (3):580-582.
In ‘Choosing Ends’, Schmidtz defines a new kind of end to join the familiar categories of final, instrumental and constitutive ends: namely, maieutic ends. A maieutic end is an end which ‘gives birth to’ another end. For example, Kate wants to have a goal in life, in particular a career; so having a career is a maieutic end which ‘gives birth to’ her career in medicine. ….

The Role of Ethics in the Daily Work of Oncology Physicians and Molecular Biologists—Results of an Empirical Study.Birthe D. Pedersen - 2008 - Business and Professional Ethics Journal 27 (1-4):75-101.
This article presents results from an empirical investigation of the role and importance of ethics in the daily work of Danish oncologyphysicians and Danish molecular biologists. The study is based on 12 semi-structured interviews with three groups of respondents: a group of oncology physicians working in a clinic at a public hospital and two groups of molecular biologists conducting basic research, one group employed at a public university and the other in a private biopharmaceutical company. We found that oncology physicians consider (...)

Within the caring science paradigm, variations of a method of interpretation inspired by the French philosopher Paul Ricoeur's theory of interpretation are used. This method consists of several levels of interpretation: a naïve reading, a structural analysis, and a critical analysis and discussion. Within this paradigm, the aim of this article is to present and discuss a means of creating distance in the interpretation and the text structure by using narration in a poetic language linked to the meaning of the (...)

Using empirical research to formulate normative ethical principles in biomedicine.Mette Ebbesen & Birthe D. Pedersen - 2006 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 10 (1):33-48.
Bioethical research has tended to focus on theoretical discussion of the principles on which the analysis of ethical issues in biomedicine should be based. But this discussion often seems remote from biomedical practice where researchers and physicians confront ethical problems. On the other hand, published empirical research on the ethical reasoning of health care professionals offer only descriptions of how physicians and nurses actually reason ethically. The question remains whether these descriptions have any normative implications for nurses and physicians? In (...)

Physicians and caregivers do differ in ethical attitudes to daily clinical practice.Patrik Kjærsdam Telléus, Dorte Møller Holdgaard & Birthe Thørring - 2018 - Clinical Ethics 13 (4):209-219.
It is commonly assumed that there are differences in physicians’ and caregivers’ ethical attitudes towards clinical situations. The assumption is that the difference is driven by different values, views and judgements in specific situations. At Aalborg University Hospital, Denmark, we aimed to investigate these assumptions by conducting a large quantitative study. The study design, based on the Factorial Survey Method, was a carefully constructed survey with 50 questions designed to test which factors influenced the respondents’ ethical reasoning. The factors were (...)

Social–demographic influence on first birth interval in china, 1980–1992.Zheng Zhenzhen - 2000 - Journal of Biosocial Science 32 (3):315-327.
This study examines the delay between first marriage and first live birth in China among a sample of women who married between 1980 and 1992. Most couples in China only use contraception after the first child is born. Most sample women had their first child within 2 years of marriage. However, there are significant rural–urban differences in the first birth interval, indicating that there was most probably deliberate fertility regulation after marriage among many urban couples. Survival analysis shows (...)

Revisiting the critique of medicalized childbirth: A contribution to the sociology of birth.Diana Worts & Bonnie Fox - 1999 - Gender and Society 13 (3):326-346.
Based on interviews with 40 first-time mothers, the authors develop an argument that supplements the critique of medicalized childbirth by focusing on the social context in which women give birth. Particularly important about that context is women's privatized responsibility for babies' well-being, and a dearth of social supports for mothering, including the sharing of that responsibility by fathers. Contextualizing childbirth in this way makes clearer not only why many women are favorable toward medical intervention but also the decisions women (...)

The reconstruction of ensemble d–f of the Akhmîm Papyrus, better known as the Strasbourg Papyrus, which attests approximately eighteen of the over seventy new lines of Empedocles’ physical poem, has drawn the attention of scholars over recent years. Thanks to the good condition of the papyrus and the coincidence with two Empedoclean lines, already known from the indirect tradition, ensemble d–f 1–10a presents a well-restored text and an intelligible sense. In contrast, because of the damaged state of the papyrus, the (...)
