『역전』은 천･지･인의 삼재로 체계화하여 인간을 천지와 평등하고 대등한 관계로까지 끌어 올려 ‘삼재’를 말한다. 천․지․인의 삼재라는 관점 역시 천인합일을 벗어난 전혀 다른 이질적인 사상은 아니다. 다만 천․지․인이 모두 동등하다는 三才齊等이라는 측면에서 인간의 지위와 역할이 강조되고 있다는 점이다. 여기에서 『역전』은 우주의 변화와 현실의 복잡한 문제들을 전체적으로 통찰하여 해결할 수 있는 능력을 겸비하고 있는 사람을 요청한다. 그가 바로 聖人이다. 인류는 한편으로는 우주 속의 한 명의 구성원이면서 다른 한편으로 그 지위는 우주 속의 다른 구성원들과는 결코 완전히 평등하지는 않다. 그렇게 되는 근본 원인은 사람은 자신들이 (...) 가진 지혜를 통하여 세계를 바꾸어 제이의 창세를 가능하게 하는 창조적 능력을 가지고 있기 때문이다. 이 점을 『역전』은 성인을 통하여 분명하게 말하고 있다. 본 논문은 성인의 존재를 신화나 역사 속에 실존하는 인물보다는 사회공동체가 가지고 있는 集體 정신의 염원을 상징적으로 표현한 일종의 문화적 상징부호로 간주하려고 한다. 『역전』에 보이는 성인을 숭배하는 관점은 사회 심리적 요소들과 내재적 연관성이 있다. 이런 崇聖意識의 형성은 사회공동체가 가지고 있는 집체정신의 염원을 상징적으로 표현한 것으로, 인문화성의 임무를 담당한 성인이라는 이름의 사회적 자아일 뿐이다. 다시 말하면 문화적 상징부호로서의 성인은 현실 속의 인간들의 염원과 희망을 담은 매개체의 역할을 담당하고 있다. 여기에서 성인의 역할은 인간의 문명을 만들고 삶의 질을 높이는 문화적 영웅으로 전환된다. Although Lynn White, jr. is best known for the critical aspects of his disputed 1967 essay, “The Historical Roots of Our Ecologic Crisis,” this article combines archival research and findings from his lesser-known publications in an attempt to reconcile his thought on democracy with the Earth Charter and its assertion that “we are one human family and one Earth Community with a common destiny” . Humanity is first and foremost, White believed, part of a “spiritual democracy of all (...) God's creatures” in which humans and nonhumans should treat each other with mutual compassion and courtesy. It is argued that the Christian, animal-inclusive “biodemocracy” envisioned by White is both compatible with, and potentially in conflict with, the tenets of the Earth Charter. This article also considers further implications of these findings for the larger fields of ecotheology and religion and ecology. (shrink)
