Rambam Medical Center, the only tertiary care center and largest hospital in northern Israel, was subjected to continuous rocket attacks in 2006. This extreme situation posed serious and unprecedented ethical dilemmas to the hospital management. An ambiguous situation arose that required routine patient care in a tertiary modern hospital together with implementation of emergency measures while under direct fire. The physicians responsible for hospital management at that time share some of the moral dilemmas faced, the policy they chose to follow, (...) and offer a retrospective critical reflection in this paper. The hospital’s first priority was defined as delivery of emergency surgical and medical services to the wounded from the battlefields and home front, while concomitantly providing the civilian population with all elective medical and surgical services. The need for acute medical service was even more apparent as the situation of conflict led to closure of many ambulatory clinics, while urgent or planned medical care such as open heart surgery and chemotherapy continued. The hospital management took actions to minimize risks to patients, staff, and visitors during the ongoing attacks. Wards were relocated to unused underground spaces and corridors. However due to the shortage of shielded spaces, not all wards and patients could be relocated to safer areas. Modern warfare will most likely continue to involve civilian populations and institutes, blurring the division between peaceful high-tech medicine and the rough battlefront. Hospitals in high war-risk areas must be prepared to function and deliver treatment while under fire or facing similar threats. (shrink)

Slovenian philosopher bad boy Slavoj Žižek is one of the most famous intellectuals in the world. He publishes at a breakneck speed and lectures around the world. He has an unmistakable speaking style and set of mannerisms that have made him ripe material for internet humor and meme culture. YouTube clips of his talks, interviews, and media appearances often have tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of views. How did an intellectual from a remote Eastern European country come (...) to such notoriety? In this book, sociologist Eliran Bar-El plumbs the "phenomenon called 'Žižek;'" its origin, emergence, and development over the years. He begins with Žižek's early years as a thinker and political figure in Slovenian civil society. There, Žižek became a philosopher, immersed himself in Marxist debates both within academia as well as in activist circles, and even ran for office. Bar-El then turns to Žižek's emergence in the English-speaking world as an intellectual celebrity in the 1990s and the development and perfection of his unique performative style and rhetorical arsenal (Žižek's language of "Hegelacanese"). Post 9/11, Žižek goes global, becoming a well-known op-ed writer and TV commentator on pop culture and large-scale global events such as the War on Terror, the financial crisis of 2008, and the Arab Spring of 2011. Things took a turn when Žižek was almost entirely estranged from the normal workings of academia and increasingly became the target of other of other thinkers-Noam Chomsky, notably-who singled him out as an example of intellectual imposture, as well as others outraged by the non-politically correct views he professes. Ultimately, Bar-El shows how Žižek harnessed the power of the digital era in his own self-fashioning as an intellectual, remaking and capitalizing on the shifting intellectual landscape and what Bar-El calls our "knowledge societies." Throughout the book, Bar-El shows how Žižek has navigated different audiences and publics, developing a hybrid language capable of speaking to specialists and laypeople alike, using globally traumatic events as the subject of his often irreverent analyses, combining high and low registers, and flaunting his own lack of expertise and specialization and his "outsider" status as a way to form a substantial extra-academic public and to engage with current events. This article positions relational social theories against theories of non-relation. Relational social theories consider relations to be primary as opposed to objects. In contrast, two theoretical positions—psychoanalysis and Marxism—hold non-relation as the origin of any social relations. Not coincidentally, psychoanalysis and Marxism also hold the position of the subject, which relational social theories abolish as yet another object. What makes the link between non-relation and subject possible for psychoanalysis and Marxism, is the affirmation of a constitutive negativity embodied in-and-through social (...) antagonisms of sexuality and class-struggle. The article shows, therefore, that by precluding this constitutive negativity, relational social theories lose sight of these two critical sites. (shrink)

An investigation into the conditions conducive to the emergence of heterogeneity amoung agents is presented. This is done by using a model of creative artificial agents to investigate some of the possibilities. The simulation is based on Brian Arthur's 'El Farol Bar' model but extended so that the agents also learn and communicate. The learning and communication is implemented using an evolutionary process acting upon a population of strategies inside each agent. This evolutionary learning process is based on a Genetic (...) Programming algorithm. This is chosen to make the agents as creative as possible and thus allow the outside edge of the simulation trajectory to be explored. A detailed case study from the simulations show how the agents have differentiated so that by the end of the run they had taken on qualitatively different roles. It provides some evidence that the introduction of a flexible learning process and an expressive internal representation has facilitated the emergence of this heterogeneity. (shrink)

In this sense, this article leverages how A bar at the Folies—Bergere questions the social representation of not only the public but the legitimizing institutions that support an artistic truth, to point to an x—ray that presents the structure and the gap between the public and artists, between artistic expression and cultural significance, and thus presents the cultural crisis warned by artists. The resulting theories are used to characterise the arithmetical fragment of EL +EBIa0. As a digression, we use TAPP to show that P. Martin-Löf's basic extensional theory ML0 is conservative over intuitionistic arithmetic.

Con este artículo se pretende simplificar la propuesta presentada en un trabajo anterior, prescindiendo como conectiva del símbolo barra de la probabilidad condicionada. Haciéndolo, se consigue reducir a la mitad el número de condiciones postuladas, percibiéndose con ello mejor el lugar central de la condición de superioridad por implicación. También se aborda qué información pueda proporcionar el grado de aproximación de los modelos teórico-económicos sobre lo que vaya a terminar sucediendo en las situaciones empíricas correspondientes, se indican dos formar de (...) ampliar el análisis para incrementarla, y se comenta la aplicabilidad práctica de las comparaciones estudiadas.The proposal about the approximation comparisons presented in an earlier essay may be simplified doing without the bar symbol of conditional probability. In this way, the number of the postulated conditions diminish in a half, and the key role of the superiority by implication property is better perceived. Attention is also paid to what information can be gathered from the approximation degree of economic theoretical models about what may finally happen in the corresponding empirical situations, and to the ways by which this information can be increased. El autor describe algunos elementos distintivos del estatus y de las funciones del ciudadano en la Atenas del siglo V así como en el contexto democrático ateniense, en el que nació la figura del ciudadano. Pone de relieve el carácter excluyente y las instituciones "limitadas" que hacen de la ciudadanía un estatus exclusivo, reservado para los hombres, para los hijos de ambos padres atenienses y que de esa manera excluía a los extranjeros residentes (metecos), a los otros griegos y (...) a los bárbaros. A partir de la categoría aristotélica de "ciudadano en sentido absoluto", el autor muestra cómo incluso dentro de la comunidad de los atenienses libres, por varias razones, grupos como el de los jóvenes, de los ancianos y de las mujeres en particular, estén excluidos de la plena participación en la vida política de la ciudad, en definitiva, a las decisiones y la gestión del poder. Al mismo tiempo, la investigación muestra cómo los atenienses, a pesar de que sean una minoría de hombres libres dentro de la ciudad, durante dos siglos en forma gradual desarrollen un alto nivel de participación en la vida política de la ciudad, en el sentido de que incluso las clases menos privilegiadas pudieran ocupar cargos políticos que antes eran reservados solo para los más ricos. De este modo se aplicaría plenamente el principio democrático con el cual todo el pueblo gobierna y, al mismo tiempo, a través del primer ejército hecho enteramente de ciudadanos, defiendan sus propias decisiones. ABSTRACT. The author describes a number of distinctive traits of the status and role of citizens in the democratic Athens of the 5th-century BC and in the Athenian democratic framework which saw the establishment of the figure of the citizen. He highlights the exclusiveness of citizenship and the legal institutes that “closed” access to citizenship status. Citizenship was reserved to males born to Athenian parents, and excluded resident aliens (meteci), the other Greeks and the Barbarians. Starting with the Aristotelian category of “citizens in the absolute sense”, the author shows that even within the community of free Athenians, young people, the elderly and, above all, women, were barred from fully participating in the political life of the city for various reasons. Such categories were in all effects excluded from the decision-making process and from the management of power. At the same time the research shows how Athenian citizens, made up of free men which formed but a minority in the city population, succeeded within two centuries to fully develop a high degree of participation in the political life of the city. It was not long before members of lower-income groups started holding key positions in the city that were previously reserved to individuals belonging to the wealthier classes. It was a turnaround that reflected the full realisation of the democratic principle according to which it was the people of Athens as a whole that governed and defended the choices made with an army made up of Athenian citizens. El presente artículo explora las percepciones y las voces de un grupo de mujeres del sur peruano acerca de igualdad de género en contextos de liderazgo y toma de decisiones en organismos públicos y privados. A través de entrevistas semi-estructuradas, documentos y notas de campo y bajo el marco analítico pos-estructural feminista, nuestros hallazgos indican que a pesar de los avances en cuanto a la participación de las mujeres en espacios públicos, en la práctica, las mujeres aún siguen lidiando con (...) un sistema dominante donde persisten la discriminación de género acompañada de bar-reras estructurales, institucionales y culturales que impiden su inclusión y participación. Sin embargo, a pesar de los obstáculos organizacionales y domésticos, estas mujeres construyen sus identidades en su convivencia diaria con un activo sistema patriarcal. Las implicaciones de este artículo son de im-portancia para la generación de políticas públicas sensibles al tema de género así como para mejorar las prácticas laborales en los sectores públicos y privados. Belâgat ilmi, Arap dilinin özelliklerini kavramada ve gizemlerini anlama konusunda önemli bir yere sahiptir. İslam’la birlikte lafzıyla mûcize olan Kur’ân-ı Kerîm inmiş ve sonrasında bu kitapla belâgat ve hitabet konusunda zirvede bulunan Araplara meydan okunmuştur. Nitekim Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’in indirildiği dönemde muhatabı olan toplum Belâgat ve Fesahat konusunda son derece başarılı bir toplumdu. İşte Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’in böyle bir meydan okumasına bakılarak belâgat açısından ne kadar zengin olduğu daha da fazla anlaşılmaktadır. Aynı zamanda Kur’ân hitap açısından öyle bir üslup kullanmıştır ki İslam’a (...) karşı olan kimseler bile bu üslup karşısında hayretler içerisinde kalmışlardır. Hayret etmeleri dışında kendilerinden bir benzerini getirmeleri talep edilmesi karşısında da aciz kaldıkları kanıtlanmıştır. Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’in içeriğinde ve üslubunda görülmeyen, yüzeysel olarak bakıldığında hemen anlaşılmayan, derin araştırma sonucu ulaşılan edebî güzelliklere ve ayetlerin nazmında gizlenmiş edebî sanatlara Belâgat ilmi yardımıyla ulaşılır. Bu bakımdan Arap dili ilimlerinden gerek Sarf ve Nahiv ilmi olsun gerekse Belâgat ilmi olsun Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’deki sûreler ve ayetlerin doğru anlaşılması konusunda önem arz eden ilimlerdir. Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’in her sûresi Belâgat ilmi açısından kendisinde birçok edebî sanatı barındırmaktadır. Mesela Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’in ilk sûresi olan Fâtiha sûresinin edebî yönden oldukça zengin bir sûre olduğu söylenmiştir. Fâtiha sûresinin edebî yönden olan bu zenginliği dolaylı olarak manasına da açık bir şekilde etki etmiştir. Bu minvalde Fâtiha sûresinin sadece Ebû Hayyân’ın “el-Baḥrü'l-muḥîṭ” adlı eserinde belirtmiş olduğu edebî sanatlarının tanıtımı ve açıklaması yapılmıştır. Bu eser etrafında amacımız belâgat ilmi içerisinde edebî sanatların ayetler üzerinde anlam bakımından katkılarını araştırmaktır. Çalışma da bahsi geçen edebî sanatlar genel olarak Arap dili ve Belâgat ilminden bahseden kaynaklardan araştırılmış ve incelenmiştir. Bu sanatlar hakkında elde edilen bilgilere ve tespitlere de burada yer verilmiştir. Bu edebî sanatların genel olarak oluşumu, Fâtiha sûresinde var olan birden fazla kıraat vücûhâtının belâgat ilmi açısından tahlil edilmesi ve anlamsal bağlamda söz dizime kattığı mana derinliği doğrultusunda gerçekleşmiştir. İçerikteki konular üzerinde derin bir açıklama yapılmaya çalışılmış ancak amacın dışına çıkılmamaya gayret edilmiştir. Konular kısaca ifade edilerek bu sanatların ayette nerede ve nasıl ortaya çıktığından bahsedilmiştir. Bu çalışmamızda Belâgat ilmi ve sanatları veciz bir şekilde ele alınmaya çalışılmış ayrıca edebî sanatların ayetler üzerindeki etkileri ortaya çıkarılmaya çalışılmıştır. Son olarak da bu edebî sanatların Kur’ân-ı Kerîm’i anlama bakımından ne kadar önemli olduğu çalışmanın genelinde anlatılmaya çalışılmıştır. (shrink)

Mâzerî et-Temimî (ö. 536/1141) Endülüs’ün düşmesinden önce Kuzey Afrika’da yaşamış son fakihlerdendir. Malikî fıkhının usûl-i fıkıh yapısının oluşumunda önemli dönüm noktası olarak kabul edilen Îzâhu’l-Mahsûl min Burhâni’l-usûl isimli eserin müellifidir. Hadis, fıkıh, kelam, tıp ve fetvâ alanlarında kayda değer bilgi sahibi Mâzerî’nin usûlcülüğüne dair bir çalışmanın yapılmamış olması bu çalışmayı gerekli kılmıştır. Çalışmada Mâzerî’nin usûl anlayışı usûl-i fıkıh alanında yazdığı Îzâhu’l-Mahsûl isimli eser üzerinden incelenmektedir. Îzâhu’l-Mahsûl, Mâzerî’nin Şâfiî âlim İmâmü’l-Haremeyn Cüveynî’nin (ö. 478/1085) el-Burhan fî usûli’l-fıkh isimli usûl-i fıkıh eseri üzerine (...) yapılan bir şerhtir. Şerhedilen Cüveynî’nin el-Burhân isimli eseri, Şâfiî usûl-i fıkhının temel metinlerinden birisidir. Mâzerî bu önemli eser üzerine yaptığı şerhte, hocası Cüveynî’nin konu tasnifi ve sistematiğini takip etmiş, usûl-i fıkıh yazımında mütekellimin yöntemini uygulamıştır. Hocasının eseri ile benzerlikler taşımasına rağmen söz konusu şerh, tamamlanmamış hâliyle dahi yer verdiği görüşler ve değerlendirmeler ile müstakil bir eser mahiyetindedir. Mâzerî eserde hocasına muhalefet etmekten çekinmemiş, kendi ictihad usûlünü ortaya koymuştur. Araştırmaya inceleme konusu edilen Îzâhu’l-Mahsûl isimli eser, Şâfiî usûl-i fıkhının Malikî usûl-i fıkhını yöntem ve içerik açısından etkilemesi açısından önemli bir örnektir. Bu eser ile birlikte Mâlikî usûl-i fıkıh literatürü ve metinleri Îzâhu’l-Mahsûl’den örnek alınarak oluşturulmuştur. Mâzerî sonrası Malikî usûlcülere kaynak olan bu eser, aynı zamanda Şâfiî-Malikî usûl-i fıkıh etkileşiminin izlerini barındırdığı için inceleme konusu edilmiştir. Çalışma kapsamında Îzâhu’l-Mahsûl eserinde Mâzerî’nin usûl anlayışında öne çıkan ilkeler tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Böylece Mâlikî usûl-i fıkhının hangi hususlar üzerine inşa edildiğinin net olarak ortaya konulması hedeflenmiştir. Mâzerî’nin usûl anlayışının içinde yetiştiği fikri ve siyasi ortamdan etkilenmemesi mümkün değildir. Bu durum göz önünde bulundurularak Mâzerî’nin hayatına, hocalarına, eserlerine ve yaşadığı dönemde Mağrib bölgesinin düşünsel ve siyasi atmosferine kısaca temas edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Yaşamına dair tüm detayların, Mâzerî’nin ilmî hayatına ve özelde usûlcülüğüne etkisi anlaşılmaya çalışılmıştır. Ayrıca Mazerî’nin usûl anlayışının öne çıkan unsurlarının tespiti, Mağrip bölgesindeki fıkhî yapının anlaşılması ve İslâm hukuk tarihi açısından bölgenin aydınlatılması açısından da önemlidir. Söz konusu saiklerle yapılan çalışma, Mâzerî’nin usûl anlayışını temel özellikleri açısından ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Böylece Mâzerî’nin Mâlikî usûl-i fıkıh anlayışına ve literatürüne yaptığı katkıya ışık tutmak amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma metotlarından doküman incelemesi yöntemi kullanılmıştır. For a sample comprising 36,105 U.S. firm-year observations from 1985 to 2008, we find that firms located in more religious counties enjoy cheaper equity financing costs. This result is robust to a battery of sensitivity tests, including alternative assumptions and model specifications, additional controls for noise in analyst forecasts, and various approaches to addressing endogeneity. In another set of tests, we find that the equity pricing role that religion plays comes predominantly from Mainline Protestants. We also document that the effect (...) of religiosity on firms’ cost of equity capital is larger for firms (periods) lacking alternative monitoring (regulation) mechanisms as measured by lower institutional ownership (the pre-SOX era), implying that religion plays a corporate governance role. Finally, we find that the importance of religion to equity pricing is concentrated in firms that suffer lower visibility, which tend to be more sensitive to local social and economic factors. By examining the links between religiosity and valuation at the firm level, we provide strong, robust evidence supporting the perspective that religion facilitates economic development. (shrink)

Ancak onun insana ve dünyaya bakan yönü kapalı ve belirsiz kalmaktadır. Böyle bir inancı insanların bilebilmesi mümkün değir, zira kalpteki imanın varlığı onlar açısından kapalıdır. Yalnızca kalpte olan bir imanı yalnızca Allah bilebilir. Bir mümin için kalbin tutumu tek başına yeterli ve tasdikin diğer boyutları da gerekli değilse, o zaman iman bireysel ve kişiye özgü kalmaktadır. Bunu bir çeşit kapalı (insana açık olmaya) iman türü olarak görmek mümkündür. Bu durum ise tasdikin ihtiva ettiği açıklık ve kesinlik boyutuyla çelişir.Bununla birlikte Mâtürîdîler de imanın yalnızca kalp ile tasdik ve ahirete bakan yönüyle tanımlandığında ortaya çıkan bu riskin farkındadırlar. Ancak şu acıktır ki, onlar imanın yalnızca kalbin tasdiki olarak açıklanmasını, ahirete dönük ve teknik anlamda bir doğrulama türü olarak görürler. Mâtürîdîlerin büyük çoğunluğu, imanın insana bakan yönünü de hesaba katarlar ve bu açıdan onlar, imana kalbin tasdiki kadar dilin ikrarının da eşlik etmesi gerektiğini düşünürler. Bu durumda imanın en açık ve en şeffaf anlamına, kalb ile tasdik ve dil ile ikrar olarak tanımlandığında kavuştuğunu söylemek mümkün olacaktır. Mâtürîdîlere göre iman hem ahiret hem de dünya hayatı açısından en açık ve en kesin anlamına “kalb ile tasdik ve dil ile ikrar” olarak tanımlandığında erişir. Böyle bir anlaşım bir kapalılık barındırmaz ve herhangi bir kapalılık durumunu da reddeder. Diyebiliriz ki, Mâtürîdî düşünürler, imanın dünya hayatına bakan yönünü dikkate aldıklarında, kalbin tasdikinin ötesinde, imanın diğer boyutlarını da hesaba katarlar ve iman anlayışlarını bu açıdan inşa ederler. Kalbin tasdiki, dil ve davranış vasıtasıyla nesnel alana taşınır ve gözlemlenebilir duruma gelir. Diğer taraftan Mâtürîdîler, kalp ile tasdike dayanmayan salt bir dil ile ikrarı, imanın geçersiz bir biçimi olan nifaka özdeş görürler. Sevgi, Mâtürîdî ahlak anlayışının dayandığı genel karakterlerden biridir. Ahlak içerisinde iradi bir eylem ön planda yer almış olsa da aslında bu eylem sevgi temeline dayanaklık etmektedir. Mâtürîdî’nin sevgi anlayışının temelinde, varlıklara sevginin Allah tarafından verildiğinin bilinmesi gerekliliği vardır. Çünkü insan fıtratında olan bu duygunun yani sevginin, sıradan bir yönelimin dışına çıkması ve insanı yücelten bir nitelik kazandırması bu temele dayanmaktadır. Mâtürîdî, her insanda doğuştan gelen bir güzellik eğilimi ya da güzel olana sevgi besleme gibi bir yatkınlığın olduğunu ifade etmiştir. Allah (...) sevgisinin de insanda fıtri bir duygu olduğu düşüncesindedir. Yaratılıştan gelen bu duygu kişiyi ahlaki açıdan Rabbinin rızasını kazanma ve insanın Rabbini sevme düşüncesinden ayrı değildir. Kendisine karşı sevgi duyulan bir Allah düşüncesi kişide övülen ahlaki fiillere yönlendiren önemli bir unsur olarak görülmektedir. Bu temel sevgi anlayışının bilinmesi, kişinin kendisiyle yüceleceği bir erdeme dönüşmesine zemin hazırlamaktadır. Mâtürîdî’nin izahlarında genellikle fiilde sevgiyi Allah ile bağlantılı olarak ele aldığını görmekteyiz. Ayrıca sevgi erdemi (el-Fadl fi’l-Mevedde), bir fiili gerçekleştirirken Yaratan’ın memnun olması için onu severek yapmak ve sevmediği bir fiilden de sırf O memnun olmayacağı için uzaklaşmak düşüncesini içinde barındırır. Mâtürîdî’nin izahlarının genelinde Allah’tan korkma anlamında “takva” ve bu kökten türeyen kelimelerde içinde sevgiyi barındıran bir korku olduğu vurgulanmaktadır. Ayrıca ifrat ve tefrite düşerek ‘orta yol’dan ayrılanın durumu da ‘takva’ya uygunluktan uzaklaşmakla eşittir. Öyle ki takvaya uygun olan fiilin ifrattan, tefritten uzakta ve ortada, dengeli olması gereklidir. Ayrıca Mâtürîdî adaleti ‘orta yol’ olarak tanımlar ve bir şeyin orta yolunun adalet üzere olmasına bağlar. Bir başka açıdan buna, ‘fiillerde hikmetli davranmak’ da diyebiliriz. Zaten Mâtürîdî’ye göre ‘Hikmet’ isabet etmek demektir. Yani her şeyin yerli yerine konulmasıdır. Mâtürîdî, kalpteki sevgi duygusunun hakikatinin bilinemeyeceğini ifade ederken insandaki muhabbet duygusunun da ancak kendisinden fayda gördüğü kişiye olacağını, fayda görmediği kişiye sevgi duyamayacağını ifade eder. Mâtürîdî’ye göre insan neyin kendisi için iyi olduğunu veya neyin kötü olduğunu, hakiki amaçlarının neler olması gerektiğini belirlemeye çalışan ve erdemli bir yaşayışı nasıl gerçekleştirmesi gerektiğini anlamlandırmakla görevli olan bir varlıktır. İnsanın ahlaki yapısına baktığımızda da hangi gayeler etrafında yaşam sürmesi gerektiğini, iyi ve kötünün, ödev ve sorumlulukların belirlenmesi gibi düşüncelerin insan varlığında ahlaki temel bir amaca dayandığını ya da dayanması gerektiğini görmekteyiz. Biz de bu çalışmamızda Mâtürîdî ahlakına felsefi bir bakışla kavramsal olarak sevgiyi nasıl anlamlandırdığını ele almaya çalışacağız. (shrink)

This note explores the common core of constructive, intuitionistic, recursive and classical analysis from an axiomatic standpoint. In addition to clarifying the relation between Kleene’s and Troelstra’s minimal formal theories of numbers and number-theoretic sequences, we propose some modified choice principles and other function existence axioms which may be of use in reverse constructive analysis. Specifically, we consider the function comprehension principles assumed by the two minimal theories EL and M, introduce an axiom schema CFd asserting that every decidable property (...) of numbers has a characteristic function, and use it to describe a precise relationship between the minimal theories. We show that the axiom schema AC00 of countable choice can be decomposed into a monotone choice schema AC00m (which guarantees that every Cauchy sequence has a modulus) and a bounded choice schema BC00. Background: Arthritis is very common but is not well understood. Actually, “arthritis” is not a single disease; it is an informal way of referring to joint pain or joint disease. There are more than 100 different types of arthritis and related conditions. People of all ages, sexes and races can and do have arthritis, and it is the leading cause of disability in America. More than 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some type of arthritis. It is most common (...) among women and occurs more frequently as people get older. Common arthritis joint symptoms include swelling, pain, stiffness and decreased range of motion. Symptoms may come and go. They can be mild, moderate or severe. They may stay about the same for years, but may progress or get worse over time. Severe arthritis can result in chronic pain, inability to do daily activities and make it difficult to walk or climb stairs. Arthritis can cause permanent joint changes. These changes may be visible, such as knobby finger joints, but often the damage can only be seen on X-ray. Some types of arthritis also affect the heart, eyes, lungs, kidneys and skin as well as the joints. Objectives: The main goal of this expert system is to get the appropriate diagnosis of disease and the correct treatment and give the appropriate method of treatment through several tips that concern the disease and how to treat it and we will see it through the application on the expert system. Methods: in this paper the design of the proposed Expert System which was produced to help Orthopedist in diagnosing Arthritis disease through its symptoms such as: pain on pressure in a joint , Inflammation indicated by joint swelling, Stiffness especially in the morning , Loss of flexibility of joint, Limited, joint movement, Deformity of the joints , Weight loss and fatigue , Non-specific fever and Crepitus. The proposed expert system presents an overview about Arthritis disease is given, the cause of diseases is outlined and the treatment of disease whenever possible is given out. SL5 Object Expert System language was used for designing and implementing the proposed expert system. Results: The proposed Arthritis disease diagnosis expert system was evaluated by Orthopedics students and they were satisfied with its performance. Conclusions: The Proposed expert system is very useful for Orthopedist, patients with arthritis and newly graduated Orthopedics students. (shrink)

In contrast with the development of big theories in the context of social sciences, there is nowadays an increasing interest in the construction of simulation models for complex phenomena. Those simulation models suggest a certain image of social sciences as a kind of, let us say, "patchwork". In that image, an increase in understanding about the phenomena modeled is obtained through a certain sort of aggregation. There is not an application of sound, established theories to all the phenomena of a (...) certain kind, but an aggregation of the structures supposed, and of the results obtained, when particular systems are modeled. The recent case of the "El Farol Bar" problem, and the models built in order to face this problem, are a good example of this. We will analyze that case, trying to make clear what would be implied by the image above mentioned. Special attention will be paid to the need to take seriously the notion of a bounded rationality, linked to the special circumstances generating each decision problem, and to the existence of an irreducible pluralism of models. Background The nursing profession requires ethical and legal regulations to guide nurses’ performance. Ethical climate plays a part in shaping nurses’ ethical practice. Therefore, ethico-legal aspects and ethical climate contribute to improving nurses’ ethical practice and competencies with reducing medical errors in hospital settings. Objective This study examined the effect of ethico-legal aspects and ethical climate on managing safe patient care and medical errors among nurses. Materials and methods A cross-sectional correlational study was carried out on 548 nurses. Data were (...) collected through self-administered questionnaires about nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects, ethical practice, competencies, ethical climate and experience with medical error. Results The main sources of nurses’ knowledge of ethical and legal aspects were undergraduate lectures, job experience and colleagues. Nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects, nurses’ ethical practice and competencies were insufficient. Nurses fairly perceived their ethical climate. Also, nurses experienced medical errors about 22.6% in their units. Nurses’ knowledge of ethical and legal aspects, as well as the ethical climate were positive predictors of inadequate nurses’ ethical practice and competencies. Additionally, nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects, ethical climate and practice had a negative influence on the occurrence of medical errors. Conclusion Enhancing nurses’ knowledge in both ethical and legal aspects as well as ethical climate could significantly influence improving nurses’ ethical practice, competencies and reducing medical errors in the study units. Therefore, planning for enhancing the nurses’ ethico-legal learning and ethical climate seems to be mandatory. (shrink)
