Plotin considère parfois l’intellection comme une sorte de sensation, alors qu’il distingue par ailleurs fortement les deux activités. Le but de cet article est d’étudier cette description qui semble paradoxale dans la mesure où l’intellection est ramenée à un processus auquel elle est opposée en même temps. Nous devons tout d’abord mettre en lumière le lien entre la sensation et l’intellection. Il est ensuite nécessaire de montrer de quelle manière la sensation est considérée comme un modèle qui rend compte du (...) processus de la pensée intuitive. C’est la vue qui apparaît comme le sens permettant de décrire l’intellection de la façon la plus adéquate. Mais la sensation ne constitue pas seulement un modèle et les réalités intelligibles sont appelées «les choses sensibles de là-bas», «ces corps» ou encore «les choses visibles». Nous cherchons, en un mot, à comprendre la signification de ces expressions qui semblent contraires à la doctrine platonicienne. (shrink)

One puzzling feature of talk about properties, propositions and natural numbers is that statements that are explicitly about them can be introduced apparently without change of truth conditions from statements that don't mention them at all. Thus it seems that the existence of numbers, properties and propositions can be established`from nothing'. This metaphysical puzzle is tied to a series of syntactic and semantic puzzles about the relationship between ordinary, metaphysically innocent statements and their metaphysically loaded counterparts, statements that explicitly mention (...) numbers, properties and propositions, but nonetheless appear to be equivalent to the former. I argue that the standard solutions to the metaphysical puzzles make a mistaken assumption about the semantics of the loaded counterparts. Instead I propose a solution to the syntactic and semantic puzzles, and argue that this solution also gives us a new solution to the metaphysical puzzle. I argue that instead of containing more semantically singular terms that aim to refer to extra entities, the loaded counterparts are focus constructions. Their syntactic structure is in the service of presenting information with a focus, but not to refer to new entities. This will allow us to spell out Frege's metaphor of content carving. (shrink)

Watching, looking at, and listening to, are all things that perceiving agents actively do. Though the occurrence of these activities appears to entail perception of elements of the agent's environment, perception is not something that can be actively done by agents. This raises the question how perceptual activity and perception are related to one another. This chapter, through reflecting on a discussion of listening offered by Brian O'Shaughnessy, argues that listening to material particulars ought to be understood as the agential (...) maintenance of aural awareness of those particulars, with the aim of knowing what sounds they are making. He goes on to explore some of the consequences of these claims about listening for exercises of perceptual agency involving the other sensory modalities. (shrink)

The continuing philosophical interest in the famous 'Protocol Sentence Debate' in the Vienna Circle of Logical Positivists is, to a large measure, due to the focus on the epistemological issues in the dispute, and the neglect of differences among the leading players in their philosophical views of logic and language. In Protocols, Truth and Convention, the current understanding of the debate is advanced by developing the contemporaneous views of logic and language held by the principal disputants. Rudolf Carnap and Moritz (...) Schlick. It is argued - largely on the basis of unpublished manuscripts and correspondence - that, despite apparent differences in their respective conceptions of language, there are nonetheless striking similarities, particularly with respect to the conventionality of language. Nonetheless, one key issue - concerning the syntacticism inherent in Carnap's early Thirties' philosophy - separates the two viewpoints in the clash over protocols. Finally, it is argued that Carnap's syntacticism is untenable, a conclusion that Carnap himself finally reached in the closing exchanges of the protocol sentence controversy. (shrink)

I express my dissatisfaction with the common ways to treat the semantic paradoxes. Not only do they give rise to revenge paradoxes, they ignore the wisdom contained in the ordinary reaction to paradoxes. I instead propose an account that vindicates the ordinary reaction to paradox by putting the blame on us philosophers. It is the wrong conception of what a valid inference is, one that is central to “the ideal of deductive logic” that gives rise to the problem. The solution (...) outlined gives us a new way to accept defeat in light of the paradoxes: the arguments that lead to them are based on valid forms of reasoning, but their conclusions are nonetheless rationally rejected. The work of the German Marxist philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) is often referred to by theologians and philosophers of religion, but its enormous scope and complexity have made access to it difficult, especially for the English-speaking reader. Undergirded as it is by an ontology of hope, there is a pervasive tension in Bloch's work that moves it in contradictory directions. This tension also manifests itself in his politics, which alternate between an uncritical support of Stalinism and an almost otherworldly detachment (...) from any concrete socialist program. Bloch's life and work, with a focus on his political allegiances, are thoroughly introduced in this book. Also, it offers a close reading of his greatest work, The Principle of Hope, an analysis of his philosophy of biblical religion, and a critical examination of his ontology of hope. Conversant with the latest scholarship and attentive to the needs of those who do not have easy access to the foreign language sources, this book is an ideal introduction to the work of Bloch, especially for those interested in his treatment of religion. This essay considers Brian Leiter’s arguments for ‘replacement naturalism’ in the domain of adjudication, his thesis being that we should reject as plausible the ‘normative theory of adjudication’ and replace it witha posterioritheory which best explains the causes of judicial decisions. My central claim is that his ‘naturalizing’ argument is incomplete in the following way: it is against a bad kind of philosophical theory and leaves scope for a better, non-naturalistic, account.
