BackgroundThe triangle completion test has been used to assess egocentric wayfinding for decades, yet there is little information on its reliability. We developed a virtual reality based test and investigated whether either test of spatial navigation was reliable.ObjectiveTo examine test-retest reliability of the real-world and VR triangle completion tests. A secondary objective was to examine the usability of the VR based test.Materials and methodsThirty healthy adults aged 18–45 years were recruited to this block randomized study. Participants completed two sessions of (...) triangle completion tests in the real-world and VR on the same day with a break between sessions.ResultsIn both test versions distance from the endpoint and angle of deviation showed poor test-retest reliability. Distance traveled had moderate reliability in both the real-world and VR tests. The VR triangle test showed poor correlation with the real-world test.ConclusionThe triangle completion test has poor test-retest reliability and demonstrates poor concurrent validity between the real-world and VR. Nevertheless, it was feasible to translate a real-world test of spatial navigation into VR. VR provides opportunities for development of clinically relevant spatial navigation tests in the future. This paper argues that individuals in many high-income countries typically have moral reasons to limit their beef consumption and consume plant-based protein instead, given the negative effects of beef production and consumption. Beef production is a significant source of agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts, high levels of beef consumption are associated with health risks, and some cattle production systems raise animal welfare concerns. These negative effects matter, from a variety of moral perspectives, and give us collective moral (...) reasons to reduce beef production and consumption. But, as some ethicists have argued, we cannot draw a straight line from the ethics of production to the ethics of consumption: even if a production system is morally impermissible, this does not mean that any given individual has moral reasons to stop consuming the products of that system, given how miniscule one individual’s contributions are. This paper considers how to connect those dots. We consider three distinct lines of argument in support of the conclusion that individuals have moral reasons to limit their beef consumption and shift to plant-based protein, and we consider objections to each argument. This argument applies to individuals in high beef-consuming and high greenhouse gas-emitting high-income countries, though we make this argument with a specific focus on the United States. (shrink)

First published in 1990, Charles Taylor’s essay ‘Comparison, History Truth’ is an extended reflection on some of the problems involved in interpreting other cultures and eras. This essay’s explicit focus is the work of historians and anthropologists. Taylor mentions students of religion in the same breath, but I infer that by this he means students of comparative religions or the history of religions. I suggest that for all its emphasis on conversation, Taylor’s depiction of the comparativist’s enterprise is ultimately one-sided, (...) depicting those who are interpreted as hermeneutic patients rather than hermeneutic agents. I raise some problems with the language of distortion employed throughout the essay. I identify a number of ways in which Taylor’s thought on cross-cultural understanding dovetails with that of Anthony Kwame Appiah in his recent book Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers. I conclude, however, that there is an important issue addressed by Taylor which Appiah neglects. This is the question of how western comparativists, who according to Taylor proceed from some belief the equal validity of all cultures, engage cultures that do not share this belief. (shrink)

Contrary to the common classification of Friedrich Nietzsche as a misogynist, the works of the middle period do not entirely denigrate or dismiss women. Nietzsche’s views on women at this time were more nuanced and less vitriolic than they became. The works of the middle period repeatedly measure women by the values constitutive of free-spirithood such as autonomy, intellectual strength, desire and ability to pursue the sort of scientific knowledge Nietzsche prizes, capacity for cruelty, and the skills of dialogue. This (...) suggests that women can be considered as candidates for free spirithood, even if Nietzsche assumes that most females, like most males, will fail to meet its requirements. Rather than focus on the shaping power of biology, these writings point to the social and cultural forces that shape gender identity, allowing Nietzsche to adumbrate a non-essentialist approach to women and their potential. Just as he points to the power of egoism, so Friedrich Nietzsche is notorious for being a critic of pity. This chapter explores the dangers he detects in pity and its cognate emotions such as sympathy, empathy, and benevolence, in the middle period writings. The commonplace view that Nietzsche holds all such drives in contempt is questioned by a careful study of the middle period’s more nuanced portrayals of these emotions. While Nietzsche condemns the Christian-inspired morality of pity, he does (...) not see all manifestations of fellow-feeling as base or spurious. The influence of La Rochefoucauld’s analysis of pity is discussed, and Nietzsche’s reflections of how to react to the suffering of a friend are also explored. (shrink)

The image of Friedrich Nietzsche as a radical critic of the western philosophical tradition pervades the literature dedicated to his thought. He is often depicted as a sui generis thinker, whose thoughts evolve out of his peculiar genius. Yet this image is accepted partly because of the picture he draws of himself, for in his later works, Nietzsche repeatedly invents himself as inventor rather than legatee. Only with a knowledge of middle period writings is it possible to see how Nietzsche (...) has constructed this image of himself. The works of the middle period disclose a thinker who presents himself as constructively engaged with the western intellectual tradition, as continuing some of its ideas, expanding some of its possibilities, and repudiating other of its claims. This chapter discusses Nietzsche’s distinctive writing style in the middle period works. It then uses some of his reflections on interpretation to question the view that Nietzsche advocates an ad hominem analysis of the work of others. (shrink)

In recent years, emotions have become a major, vibrant topic of research not merely in the biological and psychological sciences but throughout a wide swath of the humanities and social sciences as well. Yet, surprisingly, there is still no consensus on their basic nature or workings. Ruth Leys’s brilliant, much anticipated history, therefore, is a story of controversy and disagreement. In recent years, the target of reaching “net zero” emissions by 2050 has come to the forefront of global climate politics. Net zero would see carbon emissions matched by carbon removals and should allow the planet to avoid dangerous climate change. But the recent prominence of this goal should not distract from the fact that there are many possible versions of net zero. Each of them will have different climate justice implications, and some of them could have very negative consequences (...) for the world's poor. This article demonstrates the many ambiguities of net zero, and argues in favor of a net zero strategy in which those who can reasonably bear the burden adopt early and aggressive mitigation policies. We also argue for a net zero strategy in which countries place the lion's share of their faith in known emissions reduction approaches, rather than being heavily reliant on as-yet-unproven “negative emissions techniques.” Our overarching goal is to put net zero in its place, by providing a clear-sighted view of what net zero will achieve, and where the “net” in net zero needs to be tightened further if the world is to achieve climate justice. ABSTRACT Schubert’s lied An die musik celebrates music’s capacity to transport the listener or performer into a better world. That capacity renders music utopian for it is this better world and the experience of its prefiguration that is the defining character of utopianism. This article explores the ways in which music may be distinctive in its utopian force, and thus suggests several approaches to researching the underdeveloped area of music and utopia. It draws particularly on Ernst Bloch’s analysis and on (...) work by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said to argue that there are two distinct aspects to the ‘special case’ for music: abstraction or unutterability, and performance. Neither of these elements is straightforward, since neither is peculiar to music, although they are arguably present in music in distinct ways, rendering it qualitatively different from other forms of utopian expression. We were shocked and deeply saddened to learn the news today. We had not heard from Martin for some time and were planning to write soon. Like so many others I considered Martin a loyal friend as well as a distinguished scholar. He set the highest standards for integrity and dedication to scholarship. No one was more generous in sharing his knowledlge with younger scholars.

In this paper I argue against the holistic claim that the description and explanation of human behaviour is irreducibly social in nature. I focus on the more specific thesis that human behaviour is rule-guided and that 'rule' is an irreducibly social notion. Against this claim I defend a teleofunctional and reductionist view. Following Millikan (1990), who argues that 'rule' can be explicated in functional terms, I extend her argument to cover social rules as well, and argue that rules are laws. (...) This disagreement is unsurprising: different passages imply different goals. Twice the suitors speak of dividing Odysseus' property (2.335-36, 16.384-86). In other passages, however, the kingship seems to be at issue; so Telemachus says that Eurymachus "is most eager to marry my mother and possess the (...) honor [geras] of Odysseus" (15.521-22)-which would seem to imply that he would have all Odysseus' wealth as well. Other passages stress the suitors' sexual desire for Penelope (1.365-66, 18.212-13). Hence scholars have often emphasized one aspect of the suitors' aims. Some think that Penelope herself is a mere excuse and the suitors' real desire is kingship in Ithaca.1 Others argue that Penelope is the only object and that "kingship" does not even exist.2 Many believe that Penelope and the kingship are somehow connected, and that the suitors seek both, while some admit that they are perplexed.3 The poet's failure to clarify Penelope's motives complicates the issue even further and has led to even more debate. Is she as loyal to [End Page 307] Odysseus as the poet claims? If so, why has she led the suitors on? Why does she appear before them in book 18? Why does she choose to hold the bow contest when there are so many indications of Odysseus' imminent return?4Scholars, however, have made the problems worse by assuming a single underlying situation. The suitors' actions, and those of Penelope, are easier to understand if we follow the narrative with the expectation that the characters adapt to changing situations. There are three basic situations in the poem, and so three "games." The first we must reconstruct, because Telemachus' new assertiveness ends it as the poem starts. His declaration of hostility toward the suitors and his attempt to use the assembly against them mark the transition to a new game. This game, too, fails to achieve an outcome, when the suitors fail to kill Telemachus on his return and an omen warns them against trying again. The third game begins when Penelope's appearance before the suitors inflames their desire for her and leads to the bow contest.I borrow the term "game" from the game theory widely used in the social sciences.5 In game theory, a "game" is a rule-governed situation in which each person must make choices in the knowledge that other people are also choosing and that the outcome depends in a prescribed way on all the choices. Game theory assumes "instrumental rationality": without considering why people want what they want, it assumes that people have preferences and use rational means to achieve them.6 Ends do not need to be rational, but means do. A rigorous application of game theory to a literary text would be foolishly reductive. Furthermore, game theory would require assigning a quantitative value to each possible outcome for each player. Still, a perspective influenced by game theory can clarify what strategies are available to the characters and the rationality or lack of rationality of their choices. [End Page 308]This argument treats the characters as possible people for whom the audience infers rational motives, provided that the narrator does not provide other motivations and such inferences offer an adequate explanation for otherwise confusing actions. This is the easiest way to discuss the narrative sequence, and it is not an inappropriate procedure for the authorial audience of this poem.7 After all, the Odyssey celebrates the cleverest of heroes and implies that Odysseus' wife resembles him. Without imagining people who calculate quite as tidily as the analysis does, we may still see them as consciously evaluating their options. However, even interpreters who reject the view of the characters as rational choosers may find this analysis helpful. They may, for example, see the characters as behaving more intuitively than through calculation yet still find it useful to examine how far their actions conform to a rational model.
