İSNAD, sosyal ve beşeri bilimler alanında hazırlanan çalışmalarda kullanılmak üzere Türkiye merkezli olarak geliştirilen akademik yazım ve kaynak gösterme sistemidir. “Kaynak gösterme”, bilginin bilimselliğinin bir gereği olduğu kadar fikrî mülkiyet ve telif haklarına saygının da bir gereğidir. Bu anlamda isnad, akademik yazımda atıf veya alıntı yapılan kaynağı belirtmek için geliştirilen atıf sistemine, Türkiye merkezli yayın yapan ilahiyat alan dergilerinde görev üstlenen editörlerin çoğunluğunun (%70,4) kararı ile ad olarak seçilmiştir.İSNAD atıf sistemi, 2017-2018 yıllarında “İlahiyat Atıf Sistemi” olarak geliştirildi ve ilk versiyonu 12/03/2018 tarihinde matbu ve online olarak yayınlanarak ücretsiz olarak kullanıma sunuldu. Sistemin Türkiye’de ve Türk Cumhuriyetlerinde ilahiyat alan dergileri arasında ilgi görmesi ve ilahiyat alanı dışında da kullanımına dair talepler gelmesi üzerine İSNAD’ın ikinci versiyonu, tüm sosyal bilimler alanında kullanılabilecek şekilde geliştirildi ve Eylül 2018 itibari ile hizmete sunuldu. Yaygın atıf biçimlerinden APA, Amerika Psikoloji Derneği (American Psychology Association) ve Chicago ise Modern Diller Derneği (Modern Languages Association) tarafından geliştirilerek satışa sunulmuştur.İSNAD; Türkiye merkezli olarak geliştirilen, kullanıma sunulduğu 12/03/2018 tarihinden kısa bir süre sonra hakemli akademik dergi ve kitap yayıncıları ile Fakülte Dekanlıkları (mezuniyet tezlerinin yazımında) ve Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Müdürlüklerince (Yüksek Lisans ve doktora tezlerinin yazımında) kullanımı benimsenen, Web of Science / Clarivate Analytics, TÜBİTAK TR Dizin ve TÜBİTAK DergiPark gibi akademik yayıncılıkla ilgili indeks ve dergi platformlarınca kaynak gösterme biçimlerinden biri olarak sistem entegrasyonu yapılan, Zotero, Mendeley ve EndNote gibi dünya çapında kullanılan kütüphane ve referans düzenleme yazılımlarına uygun şablonları hazırlanan ve ücretsiz olarak kullanıma sunulan ilk ve tek yerli-milli kaynak gösterme sistemidir ve bu açıdan oldukça önem arz etmektedir. Türkçe’nin bir bilim dili haline gelmesi hedefleniyorsa, bu hedefe ulaşmada, Türkçe olarak hazırlanan bir bilimsel yazım ve kaynak gösterme sisteminin bulunması da bir zorunluluktur. Ortaöğretim ve üniversite öğrencilerinin Türkçe olarak hazırlanan ve ücretsiz olarak kullanıma sunulan İSNAD atıf sistemini öğrenmeleri ve kullanmaları, aslı İngilizce olan ve satın alma imkanı da elde edemeyecekleri sistemleri öğrenmelerine kıyasla daha elverişlidir ve kolaydır. Türkçe konuşan ülkelerin bilim insanlarının bildiri, makale, kitap, proje ve benzeri bilimsel çalışmalarını İSNAD atıf sistemini kullanarak hazırlamaları, Türkçenin ortak bir bilim dili olarak güçlenmesine katkı sağlayacaktır. Williams (bio)Keywordscausality, criminality, determinism, medical model, positivismThese questions have been posed: Is vice (encompassing criminal and other wrongful conduct) best regarded as “sick” behavior, “immoral” behavior, or some other type altogether? Are we to understand vice in natural-medical terms, or are we better served by utilizing a moral framework? Is criminality reducible to and best categorized as a metaphysical type the essential features of (...) which are neurological or otherwise biological in nature? Or, perhaps, is criminality closer to a (non-natural) sociological type, the essential features of which can be understood only through reference to social norms and cultural conventions? These are torturously involved philosophical and theoretical questions that have given rise to an equally torturous volume of literature. Without pretending to do justice to these questions or their corresponding literature, several key considerations that must be inserted into and accounted for within the discursive pursuit of these inquiries are worth noting.Where a naturalistic ontology is employed within the study of vice, we reduce the intricacies of deviant behavioral phenomena to what we presume to be their underlying medical/biological properties. It is worth remembering that behavior itself cannot rightfully be said to be “sick”; rather, what we mean to say is that the behavior in question—in our case, various forms of “vice”—is symptomatic of some underlying illness or medical/biological condition. The presumed underlying sickness and the behavior itself are distinct, ontologically linked only through their theorized relationship to one another. This, then, is a key assumption of the medical approach to vice and its ontological classification as a natural-medical kind: that there exists a relationship between the behavior (a symptom) and the underlying illness or medical condition, and that the relationship is of the causal kind. Vice, it is suggested, is a change in state that is caused by (or, at the very least, is a direct consequence of) sickness or illness. Second, to legitimate such attributions, the illness supplying the requisite causal force must be identifiable and its causal connection to the behavior must be or be capable of being sufficiently explicated. In other words, once we have identified the relevant medical/biological properties and the behavior to which they stand in causal relatedness, we must be prepared to characterize this dynamic—we must be able to show exactly how and why such and such a condition gives rise to such and such a behavior.Problematically, causation itself is and has always been a contentious metaphysical specimen. Hume (1955) reminded us of the troubling reality [End Page 39] that we cannot ever “see” one thing cause or necessitate another. We are left, rather, to merely presume the existence of causal relationships between things. How is it, exactly, that disorder in neurodevelopment can necessitate certain behavioral outcomes? Even if we can “see” (in the empirical sense) the disorder and equally “see” the behavior, we cannot of course witness the precise causal action of the former upon the latter. Even if we are content inferring causal action in such cases, we still need to demonstrate the basic conditions of causality. To show that Condition X is causally related Behavior Y, we need to show that they are regularly associated with one another, that Condition X temporally preceded Behavior Y and, most challengingly, that no other conditions or factors have an intervening (e.g., additive, synergistic) influence. Hypothetically, if we were to posit a causal relationship between schizotypal personality traits and violent behavior, we would need to establish: (1) that schizotypal traits and violent behavior regularly coexist; (2) that those traits presented before the manifestation of the violent behavior; and (3) that no other factors (biological, psychological, and/or sociological) contributed in any meaningful way to those manifestations. We would thus need to systematically rule out family dynamics, income, education, intelligence, substance use, and so forth, as contributing factors. If, in turn, we were to determine that the presence of schizotypal traits alone is not sufficient—even if a necessary condition—to produce violent behavior but, rather, that those traits act in concert with other variables to produce the behavior, then we would not truly be... Professor Kai Nielsen is one of the most forceful proponents of the view that theological assertions have no factual reference because they are compatible with any empirical state of affairs; no evidence, it is alleged, is allowed to count as falsification of such assertions, and therefore they spuriously purport to be what they are not. In this he follows the well-known essay by Professor Antony Flew in which the same argument was advanced, and Nielsen's own most recent contribution on the (...) subject in Religious Studies should be read against the background of his earlier controversy with Professors John Hick and George Mavrodes in The Canadian Journal of Theology. In this latest article he broadens the canvas to question the significance of applying language and concepts appropriate to the realm of empirical observation to anything that is held to transcend it; and this is the substance of Part II of his paper, in which he engages in debate with Professor Ian Crombie, treading well-worn ground that has been the subject of innumerable philosophical discussions. The rest of the paper, however, is a restatement of his earlier contention, and it is with this more limited issue that I shall be concerned in what follows. For I believe that Nielsen is wrong in two quite fundamental respects: he is mistaken in supposing that theological assertions are compatible with any empirical state of affairs: he bases his critique of theological assertions on a far too uncritical appraisal of the principles of verification and falsification in the case of ordinary factual statements. If I am right, the larger questions raised in Part II will still remain open, but it is high time that the ‘verification-falsification argument’ should be shown to be unfounded. (shrink)

Aristotle distinguishes two types of style, the ‘periodic’ or ‘rounded’ and the ‘non-periodic’, ‘strung-on’ or ‘continuous’ .* The latter is typical of prose in its young and unsophisticated state, and Aristotle is not much interested in it; his discussion of the periodic style is much longer, with subdivisions being introduced and numerous examples given. His basic definition of the period is not, however, clear, and the point has seen some controversy. There are two possibilities. He defines the period ‘rhythmically’ . (...) The essential feature of the period is that its beginning and end are marked off by specific metrical rhythms .1 He defines it ‘logically’. The period is a syntactic structure with an inner cohesion produced by the logical, pre-planned arrangement of its parts according to the requirements of the whole.2 The current consensus at least of written opinions is that Aristotle intended the first;3 I believe that the issue can be settled fairly decisively in favour of the second. How much of economic theory can be derived using pure logic and how much of it depends on empirical facts? In a provocative article, Hülsmann criticizes Mises and Rothbard for relying on empirical assumptions, ceteris paribus claims, and thought experiments in their analysis. Instead, Hülsmann proposes a counterfactual method that does not rely on any empirical assumptions and is said to produce universally valid claims. Upon inspection we find that many of his proposed laws are either inexact, incorrect, or must (...) rely on subsidiary assumptions to be true. We conclude that the traditional approach of Mises and Rothbard appears to be more fruitful and true. (shrink)
