Early in the history of liberalism, its most important proponents were concerned with freedom of religion. As polities and individuals now accept a dizzying array of religions, this has receded to the background for most theorists. It nonetheless remains a concern. Freedom of speech is a similar concern and very much in the foreground for theorists looking at the current state of academia. In this essay, I argue that inappropriate limits to freedom of religion and inappropriate limits to freedom of (...) speech—especially in the form of de-platforming on college campuses—both have, as one of their effects, what I call harms of silence. This means we ought not have those limits, so should seek to change them where they exist. (shrink)

Given a regular uncountable cardinal κ and a cardinal λ > κ of cofinality ω, we show that the restriction of the non-stationary ideal on Pκ to the set of all a with equation image is not λ++-saturated . We actually prove the stronger result that there is equation image with |Q| = λ++ such that A∩B is a non-cofinal subset of Pκ for any two distinct members A, B of Q, where NGκ, λ denotes the game ideal on Pκ. En même temps qu'il est réputé pour son scepticisme linguistique, Kant reconnaît aux pronoms personnels une signification universelle. C'est ce statut d'exception qui éclaire le caractère décisif de l'usage de ces pronoms dans la critique kantienne du cogito. On peut faire apparaître un paradoxe immanent à cet usage au coeur de l'opération de désubstantialisation de la pensée, engagée par Kant dans la Déduction transcendantale et dans les Paralogismes: d'une part, la substitution des pronoms il et ça au pronom je dans (...) le fameux «je pense» permet la réduction de la pensée à sa stricte fonction logique mais, d'autre part, le jeu de substitution des pronoms n'entame pas la fonction d'instanciation d'un sujet "fût-il strictement grammatical" de la pensée dans la formulation du cogito. Cette tension paradoxale entre un sujet désubstantialisé et une «subjectivité», certes neutralisée mais restée néanmoins instanciée dans l'acte de penser, s'accuse dans la deuxième édition de la Critique de la raison pure, qui invente à partir du cogito une nouvelle catégorie d'existence. Kant semble ainsi poser une pierre d'attente pour une nouvelle conception de la subjectivité de la pensée, que nous nommons «le fait-sujet de la pensée responsable» et qui implique une pensée inédite de la constitution du je dans et par la puissance d¿interpellation de la raison. Cette analyse permet une relectura du premier paragraphe de l'Anthropologie du point de vue pragmatique, elle conduit à reconsidérer de manière critique l'interprétation que donne Jacques Derrida du sujet kantien de la pensée dans L'animal que donc je suis et elle inaugure peut-être une nouvelle conception du sujet responsable. Though known for his linguistic scepticism, Kant grants a universal meaning to personal pronouns. It is this exception which accounts for the decisive role that the use of personal pronouns plays in the kantian criticism of the cogito. It can be shown that a paradox inherent to this use emerges at the core of the thought-desubstancializing operation developed by Kant in the Trascendental deduction and the Paralogisms: on one hand, the substitution of the pronoun "I" for the pronouns "he" and "it" in the famous "I think" allows the reduction of thought to its strict logical function, but, on the other hand, the play of pronoun substitution does not prevent the subject of thought "even tough strictly grammatical" from being instanciated in the formula of the cogito. This paradoxical strain between a desubstancialized subject and a "subjectivity" neutralized but nonetheless still instantiated in the act of thinking is to be noted in the second edition of the Critique of pure reason, which derives from the cogito a new category of existence. It seems, therefore, that Kant lays the first ground for a new conception of the subjectivity of thought, which we call "the fact-subject of responsible thought" and which implies a novel notion of the constitution of the "I" in and through the addressing force of reason. This analysis allows for a new understanding of the first paragraph of the Anthropology from a pragmatic point of view, leads us to critically re-consider Jacques Derrida's interpretation of the kantian subject of thought in L'animal que donc je suis , and initiates perhaps a new conception of responsible subject. Léon Brunschvicg, dans son ouvrage sur "Les Étapes de la philosophie mathématique", a souvent suivi l'exposé historique de Cohen, et Bertrand Russel avait aussitôt salué ce "remarquable travail" de reconstruction philosophique où la part de l'histoire n'est nullement contingente puisque c'est précisément à l'intégration de l'évolution scientifique au sein de la critique de la connaissance que tend Hermann Cohen.". The philosophy of family‐centered care (FCC) promotes partnerships between families and staff to plan, deliver, and evaluate services for children and has been officially adopted by a majority of pediatric hospitals throughout North America. However, studies indicated that many parents have continued to be dissatisfied with their decision‐making roles in their child's care. This is particularly salient for parents of children with chronic ongoing complex health problems. These children are dependent upon medical technology and require frequent hospitalizations during which parents (...) must contribute to difficult decisions regarding their child's care. Given this clinical issue, an alternative theoretical perspective was explored to redress this problem. Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical concepts of field, capital, and habitus were used to analyze the hierarchical relationships in pediatric acute care hospitals and to design a briefing intervention aimed at improving parents' satisfaction with decision making in that health care setting. Roman Ingarden fut un auteur prolifique. Ancien élève de Husserl, il publia de nombreux ouvrages et articles en près de cinquante ans de carrière et suscita un nombre impressionnant de commentaires tout en demeurant peu connu des francophones. Victor Kocay tente de réparer cette injustice en nous montrant l’intérêt de l’approche ingardenienne pour l’analyse littéraire et la théorisation de la réception esthétique de l’œuvre littéraire. Deux ouvrages constituent le cœur de l’exposition: Das literarische Kunstwerks et Vom Erkennen des literarischen Kunstwerks. (...) Dans ces textes, Ingarden développe deux concepts centraux qui seront mis en application par Kocay dans la dernière partie de son ouvrage avec l’analyse du Journal d’un curé de campagne de Bernanos et du Journal du voleur de Genet: la concrétisation et la stratification. La concrétisation constitue «la notion de base de l’esthétique d’Ingarden» et ce terme renvoie au processus d’interprétation-compréhension du lecteur face au texte, processus qui résulte en la formation d’un objet esthétique. La concrétisation consiste au moins à remplir ce qu’Ingarden appelle les «lacunes d’ordre conceptuel», c’est-à-dire certains non-dits du texte. À aucun moment Conan Doyle ne dit que Sherlock Holmes est un être humain ou qu’il a trente-deux dents, et pourtant c’est ce que nous inférons de notre lecture, en utilisant nos croyances sur le monde, les traditions littéraires dans lesquelles s’inscrit l’auteur, etc. Il ne s’agit pas de combler tous les blancs, ce qui serait impossible, mais de constituer un objet en vue de son appréciation esthétique. Chaque lecteur peut concrétiser différemment un même texte, mais Ingarden refuse de sombrer pour autant dans le relativisme: l’objet esthétique constitué ne l’est pas pour la seule jouissance personnelle de son lecteur, mais il doit reposer sur les propriétés du texte lui-même et pouvoir être soumis au jugement d’autrui. Si plusieurs concrétisations d’un même texte sont possibles, toutes ne sont pas acceptables. De même, les qualités qui servent de base à l’appréciation esthétique doivent avoir leur source dans les qualités du texte lui-même, selon Ingarden. Lorsque Albert Cohen réussit à nous faire pénétrer dans l’esprit oisif d’Ariane d’Auble, dans Belle du Seigneur, à nous faire ressentir son désœuvrement en nous faisant participer aux mouvements incohérents de son imagination, c’est par un style particulier, un rythme de phrase qui épouse parfaitement les mouvements erratiques de l’esprit d’Ariane. La valeur que nous attribuons à ces pages repose sur des propriétés du texte lui-même, propriétés que nous valorisons parce qu’elles provoquent l’effet esthétique attendu. (shrink)

But a defense of inequality suggested by John Rawls and elaborated by Brian Barry has often proved irresistible even to people of egalitarian outlook. The persuasive power of this defense of inequality has helped to drive authentic egalitarianism, of an old-fashioned, uncompromising kind, out of contemporary political philosophy. Les auteurs dont les textes inedits en francais se trouvent ici rassembles et traduits, appartiennent en effet soit a l'ecole de Marbourg (H. Cohen, P. Natorp et E. Cassirer) soit a l'ecole de Bade (W. Windelband, H. Rickert, E. Lask, J. Cohn). Le point commun du neokantisme logique des premiers et du neokantisme axiologique des seconds consiste en une volonte (...) d'asseoir le positivisme sur un fondement philosophique respectueux de l'attitude phenomenologique. Kant apparut donc a tous ces penseurs comme science rigoureuse a condition toutefois de ne considerer le sujet transcendantal que comme une fonction logique de la pensee qui elabore la forme et le contenu de la connaissance. Self-Interest before Adam Smith inquires into the foundations of economic theory. It is generally assumed that the birth of modern economic science, marked by the publication of The Wealth of Nations in 1776, was the triumph of the 'selfish hypothesis'. Yet, as a neo-Epicurean idea, this hypothesis had been a matter of controversy for over a century and Smith opposed it from a neo-Stoic point of view. But how can the Epicurean principles of orthodox economic theory be reconciled with the (...) Stoic principles of Adam Smith's philosophy? Pierre Force shows how Smith's theory refutes the 'selfish hypothesis' and integrates it at the same time. He also explains how Smith appropriated Rousseau's 'republican' critique of modern commercial society, and makes the case that the autonomy of economic science is an unintended consequence of Smith's 'republican' principles. This assertion is made within the bounds of a new theory of natural classes. In this paper I wiIl consider the arguments employed by Griffiths to support the privileged status of the cladistic classification over other classifications. It is not Griffith's theory of natural classes what will be discussed, but his ability to offer a solution to the particular issue ofwhich classification system of organisms should be used in Biology. The concept of joint action is at the core of numerous diverse research topics, including philosophical explorations of social action, studies of human dialogue, human-computer interaction, computer-supported collaborative work, multiagent systems, distributed artificial intelligence, distributed simulation, and contract law. It is therefore remarkable that so central a concept has received so little detailed analysis, in comparison with studies of individuals. However, in recent years, the study of joint action has begun to undergo more intense scrutiny, primarily from philosophers and researchers (...) in artificial intelligence. These two disciplines often address similar topics but with different motivations, methodologies, tools, and criteria for success. Although this paper is inspired by philosophical work, it is squarely motivated by the concerns of building intelligent systems that are capable of collaborative behavior, either with a user, or with other such systems. Still, we hope that the paper sheds light on philosophical issues, and treats the subject of joint action at a sufficiently precise level to be illuminating of problems that any philosophical account needs to confront. I critically discuss two kinds of argument in favour of ontological pluralism and argue that they fail to show that ways of being are explanatorily fruitful.

I take a close look at Bernard Williams’s paper "Moral Luck," which put this notion on the philosophical agenda. Williams’s focal example is the painter Paul Gauguin. According to Williams, Gauguin’s morally dubious decision to desert his family so as to pursue an artistic career can be redeemed only by his partially fortuitous success as a painter. This is shown by the consideration that a successful Gauguin would not be able to regret his decision, whereas failure would have prompted regret. (...) I suggest that the best way to understand this claim is to see Gauguin’s decision to become an artist as a constitutive decision, which launches what for him proved to be a defining project. One cannot coherently regret the realization of such a project or the decision that gave rise to it because that would amount to wishing to be someone else: conditions of personal identity set the limits on the counterfactuals about ourselves that we can intelligibly entertain. However, not being able to regret the constitutive elements of one’s life is not the same as approving of these elements. So I disagree with Williams’s ultimate conclusion that the inability to regret a decision signals some justification for it, no matter how attenuated. (shrink)
