Assuming that Aristotelian ethical thought is specifically related to the problem of stability and permanency of Polis, this paper researches the relationship between the human soul and the ethical-political order. Ethical life is described as an on-going process whereby we learn how to think and desire, due to the experience of each particular situation. Ethics shows the human life as a progressive assimilation of ethical-political order in which one becomes the man one is. But, on the other hand, it also (...) shows that any order owes itself to the character of men who take part in it. Interiorising of customs – the purpose of ethical process of personal constitution – forms the man (character is built from the communitarian experience). The virtuous man’s soul is the strongest guarantee againstruination that always threatens Polis. The affirmation of a good life as a happy life in virtue – as the permanent and stable activity according to virtue – assures political order’s stability and the permanence of the Polis. This leads to a reflection about how much Politics owes Ethics: the possibility of the most esteemed idea in Aristotelian political discourse (the permanence of Polis) depends on the ethical process of human soul’s construction. The soul belongs to the order just as the order belongs to the soul. Seen as a virtue, Justice is a certain configuration of the soul (of desiring, thinking and even of feeling) of a man. The abandonment of that incarnate old conception of Justice is strictly related to the contemporary crisis of Law, whose weaknesses in legitimacy and efficacy are evident. (shrink)

The formal and empirical-generative perspectives of computation are demonstrated to be inadequate to secure the goals of simulation in the social sciences. Simulation does not resemble formal demonstrations or generative mechanisms that deductively explain how certain models are sufficient to generate emergent macrostructures of interest. The description of scientific practice implies additional epistemic conceptions of scientific knowledge. Three kinds of knowledge that account for a comprehensive description of the discipline were identified: formal, empirical and intentional knowledge. The use of formal (...) conceptions of computation for describing simulation is refuted; the roles of programming languages according to intentional accounts of computation are identified; and the roles of iconographic programming languages and aesthetic machines in simulation are characterized. The origin of moral agency is a much-debated issue. While rationalists or Kantians have argued that moral agency is rooted in reason, sentimentalists or Humeans have ascribed its origin to empathic feelings. This debate between rationalists and sentimentalists still stands with respect to persons with mental disorders, such as individuals diagnosed with mild forms of Autism Spectrum Disorder, without intellectual impairment. Individuals with ASD are typically regarded as moral agents, however their ability for empathy remains debated. The goal of this (...) paper is to investigate the mechanisms of moral actions in people with ASD, by finding arguments for the origin of their moral actions, supporting either the sentimentalist or the rationalist view of the dispute. We propose to revisit the debate using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to study the autobiographies of individuals with High-Functioning Autism and Asperger Syndrome. While conducting the systematic analysis of 10 autobiographies, we re-examined both the rationalist and the sentimentalist positions, considering the links between empathic feelings and moral agency. The investigation of the temporal dimensions of emotional experiences, an aspect overlooked by previous research, indicated that individuals with ASD empathize with others, but in different ways as compared to neurotypicals. A relationship between emotional experience and the type of moral agency exhibited by individuals with forms of ASD was established. As a consequence, our analyses support the sentimentalist stance on moral action. (shrink)

Boffa non-well-founded set theory allows for several distinct sets equal to their respective singletons, the so-called ‘Quine atoms’. Rieger contends that this theory cannot be a faithful description of set-theoretic reality. He argues that, even after granting that there are non-well-founded sets, ‘the extensional nature of sets’ precludes numerically distinct Quine atoms. In this paper we uncover important similarities between Rieger’s argument and how non-rigid structures are conceived within mathematical structuralism. Whereas initially his contributions were sidelined by the empirical advancements of the molecular revolution in developmental and evolutionary biology, his theoretical insights have left a lasting impact on the discipline. This article provides a comprehensive review of the legacy and evolvability of Alberch's ideas in contemporary evo-devo, which included the study of morphogenesis as the proper level of developmental causation, the interplay (...) between developmental constraints and natural selection, the epistemic role of teratologies, the origin of evolutionary novelties and the concept of evolvability. In the field of cybernetic systems and more specifically in robotics, one of the fundamental objectives is the detection of anomalies in order to minimize loss of time. Following this idea, this paper proposes the implementation of a Hybrid Intelligent System in four steps to impute the missing values, by combining clustering and regression techniques, followed by balancing and classification tasks. This system applies regression models to each one of the clusters built on the instances of data set. Subsequently, a (...) variety of balancing techniques are applied to improve the classifier’s ability to discern whether it is in an error or a normal state. These techniques support to obtain better classification ratios in which a robot is close to error and allow us to bring the behavior back to a normal state. The experimentation is performed using a modern and public data set, which has been extracted from a component-based robotic system, in which different anomalies are induced by software in their components. Este artículo investiga algunos pasajes de la _República_ de Platón para comprender algunos presupuestos y consecuencias de la argumentación del filósofo sobre el estatus de las pasiones, que culmina con la incisiva y radical afirmación, en el libro X, de que “es necesario secar las emociones” (Rep. 606d). Ello se debe a que, según Platón, ellas conducen a los hombres a actuar de forma irracional y cobarde, especialmente a aquellos ciudadanos que se acostumbran a la poesía, especialmente la dramática, que (...) incita a las pasiones. Frente a la crítica del filósofo al valor del teatro y a las expresiones de dolor (como el lamento y el llanto), propongo revalorizar el papel de la emoción en la formación del ciudadano y el fortalecimiento político de un grupo, tomando un caso contemporáneo: la ceremonia fúnebre realizada por el gobierno francés con motivo de la muerte del actor Jean-Paul Belmondo, en el contexto de la crisis pandémica de SARS-CoV-2. Peace is possible even though it is always interspersed with its absence. Necropolitical systems hinder peace. The dissociation of the subject, preventing the action of selective force in the face of obstruction of human potential, makes it a-critical, unable to find overcoming strategies. It is the integration of human multidimensionality providing the expression of the potential and action of selective force that can lead the subject to critical reflection and awareness that enables them to create strategies against hegemonic. Knowledge and (...) knowledge carry an axiological burden; values are learned and taught. The way out is in education. Hope and indignation for her absence is a challenge to the whole educational process. The proposals of Espinosa and Rolando Toro Araneda, in dialogue with Ferdinand Röhr and Paulo Freire, constitute philosophies that point out the conditions of possibility with which, not accepting any educational process, strategies are created whose challenge is to educate for peace. In this context, the article proposes to reflect on epistemic-ethical proposals that contribute to peace. (shrink)

O presente trabalho explora a possibilidade de compreensão de experiências temporais abertas por narrativas que se configuram por meio dos sons e da música no álbum Random Access Memories (2013), do grupo francês de música eletrônica Daft Punk. Destacamos no produto os modos com que ele articula questões e dinâmicas do tempo, da memória e da nostalgia, envolvendo pelo menos duas dimensões: a maneira como a banda explora uma dialética homem-máquina, revestindo – ou desconstruindo – aspectos sintéticos com elementos próprios (...) da “organicidade” da prática musical humana; o movimento de um suposto retorno ao passado em busca de referências da música pop, sobretudo dos anos de 1970 e 1980, aliado à busca dos sons do futuro. Com isso, buscamos não apenas caracterizar os temas do tempo que o álbum promove, mas refletir sobre a significância de tais problemas na comunicação e na cultura contemporânea. (shrink)

No espólio de Fernando Pessoa, conservado na Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, existe uma multiplicidade de projetos e fragmentos de cariz filosófico sobre metafísica dos quais resultaram uma pluralidade de escritos relativos ao sentido da noção de ser. Assim, através de uma análise dos diversos projetos pessoanos consagrados à questão da metafísica, pretendemos clarificar (...) as sucessivas soluções apresentadas por Fernando Pessoa para a problemática do ser. O século XVII revelou-se bastante positivo no tocante ao enriquecimento do hagiológio lusitano, tendência que se conseguiu manter activa até inícios de Setecentos. Para além da canonização da Rainha Santa Isabel (1625), em 1671, o Papa Clemente X estende o culto de Gonçalo de Amarante (beatificado em 1561) à Ordem dos Pregadores e a todo o reino de Portugal, com missa e ofício litúrgicos próprios.Seguir-se-ão outros processos de infantas portuguesas, mais prolíferos em termos de produção artística e iconográfica, que decorrem (...) na viragem para o século XVIII. Primeiro, o da Princesa Santa Joana (1693) e, alguns anos depois, o das filhas de D. Sancho I – Teresa, Sancha (1704) e Mafalda (processo iniciado em 1700, embora beatificada apenas em 1792). Estes processos, independentemente do seu sucesso, motivaram uma significativa produção de novas formas de representação. A proximidade com o poder papal, e com os centros de decisão, como o da Sagrada Congregação dos Ritos, levou consequentemente à opção por uma produção romana no tocante à origem das novas imagens.Apesar de motivadas por intuitos de ordem religiosa, no sentido de suscitar a devoção e divulgar o culto, estas encomendas contribuíram não só para a criação de uma nova iconografia, como para o desenvolvimento de novos conceitos estilísticos e de vertentes do gosto. De facto, elas acabam por definir a preponderância das correntes italo-romanas, que marcariam o estilo predominante da pintura portuguesa, ao longo da centúria seguinte. (shrink)

This paper explores the epistemological problem of holding something to be true while building on Wittgenstein’s later philosophy. I claim that it was Frege’s criticism of psychologism in logic that gave a boost to Wittgenstein’s reflections on this issue, an issue that already occupies a central place in Kant’s theory of knowledge. I shall endeavour to show that Wittgenstein’s considerations on rule-following and the systematic character of belief not only make evident the shortcomings of Frege’s explanation of how the mind (...) works but also take a step forward in overcoming the flaws of Kantian epistemology. The later Wittgenstein, I argue, goes further than Kant in the recognition that truth cannot attain more objectivity than the expression of our holding for true, but this does not mean endorsing any subjectivism. This book approaches classic epistemological problems from a contextualist perspective. The author takes as his point of departure the fact that we are situated beings, more specifically that every single moment in our lives is already given within the framework of a specific context in the midst of which we understand ourselves and what surrounds us. In the process of his investigation, the author explores, in a fresh way, the works of key thinkers in epistemology. These include Bernard Bolzano, René (...) Descartes, Gottlob Frege, Edmund Husserl, Immanuel Kant and Ludwig Wittgenstein, but also contemporary authors such as Stewart Cohen, Keith DeRose, David Lewis, Duncan Pritchard, Ernest Sosa and Charles Travis. Some of the topics covered are attributions of knowledge, the correspondence theory of truth, objectivity and subjectivity, possible worlds, primary and secondary evidence, scepticism, transcendentalism and relativism. The book also introduces a new contextualist thought-experiment for dealing with moral questions. Contextualism has received a great deal of attention in contemporary epistemology. It has the potential to resolve a number of issues that traditional epistemological approaches cannot address. In particular, a contextualist view opens the way to an understanding of those cognitive processes that require situational information to be fully grasped. However, contextualism poses serious difficulties in regard to epistemic invariance. This book offers readers an innovative approach to some fundamental questions in this field. (shrink)

Cognitive representations are typically analysed in terms of content, vehicle and format. While current work on formats appeals to intuitions about external representations, such as words and maps, in this paper we develop a computational view of formats that does not rely on intuitions. In our view, formats are individuated by the computational profiles of vehicles, i.e., the set of constraints that fix the computational transformations vehicles can undergo. The resulting picture is strongly pluralistic, it makes space for a variety (...) of different formats, and is intimately tied to the computational approach to cognition in cognitive science and artificial intelligence. In this paper the use of mathematics in economics will be discussed, by comparing two approaches to mathematics, a Cartesian approach, and a Newtonian approach. I will argue that while mainstream economics is underpinned by a Cartesian approach which led to a divorce between mathematics and reality, the contributions of key authors of the Cambridge tradition, like Marshall, Keynes and Sraffa, are characterised by a Newtonian approach to mathematics, where mathematics is aimed at a study of reality. Marshall was influenced (...) by the Newtonian approach that still characterised many aspects of the Cambridge Mathematical Tripos, where the emphasis was on geometrical and mechanical examples rather than on symbolic (Cartesian) mathematics. Keynes, who criticised (Cartesian) symbolic mathematics, was indeed an admirer of Newton and of his method. Sraffa's mathematical constructions are also in line with the Newtonian approach where arithmetic and geometry were strictly separated, since Sraffa's mathematical constructions typically use arithmetic without engaging in the mixture between geometry and arithmetic that occurs in the Cartesian approach. This text consists of replies to commentaries by Michael Williams, Duncan Pritchard and Javier González de Prado on my book Description of Situations: An Essay in Contextualist Epistemology.

I present and consider critically O'Regan and Noë's sensorimotor contingency theory, proposed as an alternative to solve the explanatory gap problem. I start with the criticism that these authors address the current conception of representation, according to which conscious experiences are representations of the external world produced by the brain. Afterward, I summarize the way the sensorimotor contingency theory addresses the problem of the explanatory gap, explaining the existence, form, and content of visual consciousness in terms of an "exploratory activity" (...) mediated by sensorimotor contingency laws. Finally, in agreement with criticisms addressed to O'Regan and Noë's solution, I propose a way to face the problem of the explanatory gap, which, recognizing the relevance of the body and the external environment to the existence, form and content of visual consciousness, but privileging the role of the brain as an organ of visual consciousness, and as an agent who uses visual consciousness as a guide to initiate and maintain embodied and situated adaptive actions in the world. O propósito deste artigo é explorar o modo como Hannah Arendt compreende a condição de crise como condição subjacente à existência humana no mundo moderno. Para esse fim, serão analisadas passagens de obras arendtianas, bem como algumas noções nelas presentes, de modo a traçar um caminho da condição de crise de uma perspectiva de senso comum até uma perspectiva ontológico-politicamente fundada.

O artigo trata da articulação entre a tratativa platônica acerca da escrita, notadamente no diálogo Fedro, e a letra de Clarice Lispector quando se propõe pensar o ato de escrever. Salvaguardadas as diferenças, o abismo temporal e o ponto de partida que está na criação literária e filosófica, a saber, todo o anacronismo de que faço uso para colocar Clarice e Platão em diálogo, o caráter vital, de uma escrita inquietante, forma e conteúdo ao mesmo tempo, não será essa também (...) a empreitada de escrita dos diálogos? Se for assim, como vamos construir um objeto filosófico em Platão que se enquadre nas duas margens? Como saberemos de que se trata essa filosofia? O objetivo é comparar a crítica de Platão, sugerindo que, diferente da leitura usual, de que o filósofo condena a escrita por se filiar à cultura da oralidade, aos textos em que Clarice propõe o ato de escrever como uma espécie de terapia da alma e como phármakon contra a incompreensão. Clarice and Plato's pharmacy: writing and self-knowledge Abstract: The article deals with the articulation between Plato's dealings with writing, notably in the dialogue Fedro, and Clarice Lispector's texts when she proposes to think about the act of writing. Safeguarding the differences, the temporal abyss and the starting point that is in literary and philosophical creation, namely, all the anachronism that I use to put Clarice and Plato in dialogue, the vital character of a disturbing writing, form and content at the same time, isn't this also the task of writing the dialogues? If so, how are we going to construct a philosophical object in Plato that fits both sides? How do we know what this philosophy is about? The objective is to compare Plato's criticism, suggesting that, unlike the usual reading, that the philosopher condemns writing for being affiliated with the culture of orality, with the texts in which Clarice proposes the act of writing as a kind of therapy of the soul and as a pharmakon against misunderstanding. The author seeks to understand the meaning and goals of the New Evangelization in a diachronic way as they were exposed mainly by the last popes John Paul II, Benedict XVI and Francis and how to relate it to the current Brazilian context that needs urgently new methods of evangelization.

In modern man’s life, everything changes at an ever increasing speed, as Zygmunt Bauman describes, leaving neither little nor space to think about the importance of salvation in his life. On the other hand, every man has a restlessness that makes him search, at least implicitly, for the things related to his salvation. Despite it, this search for salvation, besides important for each human person, is also important for the entire society. Analyzing the notion of salvation in the Scriptures as (...) well as in the Church’s Magisterium, it is not something closed on the individual, but it goes through the help of our neighbor, mainly those who are most in need. The study and deepening of the Church’s Social Doctrine is closely linked to the notion of salvation, not only to deal with it in an abstract and theoretical way, but in concrete actions in our daily life, in order to transmit today’s man the Church teachings and help him about how to remove life’s problems through the combined action of everyone’s searching for common good and for fighting social, political and environmental injustices. Partindo da interpretação heideggeriana de Nietzsche pretendemos pensar a questão do fim da metafísica nos situando na contenda entre esses dois pensadores. Para isso, centraremos nossa análise na discussão sobre a vontade de poder. A maneira pela qual Heidegger interpretou Nietzsche como o filósofo do fim da metafísica, inserindo-o radicalmente nessa tradição, e o sentido que deu para a noção de vontade de poder é foco de discordâncias entre intérpretes “pós-heideggerianos” de Nietzsche. Por isso, trataremos de apresentar também uma outra (...) versão da doutrina da vontade de poder, partindo de Müller-Lauter e dialogando com outros intérpretes, pois é nossa intenção mostrar que uma nova concepção da vontade de poder aliada à interpretação de uma ontologia não-essencialista em Nietzsche pode desvincular o filósofo de ter seu pensamento adequado à metafísica e ao mundo da técnica, tal como pensou Heidegger. Resumo:É pretendido, neste pequeno texto, mostrar como Leibniz se insere de modo bem peculiar na tradicional discussão filosófica acerca da liberdade do agente num mundo governado pelo princípio de razão suficiente. A questão posta por Arnauld, em carta de 13 de março de 1686, além de forçar Leibniz a dar esclarecimentos sobre a solução que adotou, também é importante por carregar certos resquícios do modo pelo qual Aristóteles abordou este tema. Também deve ser notado que, apesar da ruptura que a (...) solução leibniziana faz com a tradição aristotélica, vários outros pontos da filosofia de Aristóteles são aceitos para a construção e resolução do problema. This paper describes our general framework for the investigation of how human gestures can be used to facilitate the interaction and communication between humans and robots. Two studies were carried out to reveal which “naturally occurring” gestures can be observed in a scenario where users had to explain to a robot how to perform a home task. Both studies followed a within-subjects design: participants had to demonstrate how to lay a table to a robot using two different methods — utilizing (...) only gestures or gestures and speech. The first study enabled the validation of the COGNIRON coding scheme for human gestures in Human–Robot Interaction. Based on the data collected in both studies, an annotated video corpus was produced and characteristics such as frequency and duration of the different gestural classes have been gathered to help capture requirements for the designers of HRI systems. The results from the first study regarding the frequencies of the gestural types suggest an interaction between the order of presentation of the two methods and the actual type of gestures produced. However, the analysis of the speech produced along with the gestures did not reveal differences due to ordering of the experimental conditions. The second study expands the issues addressed by the first study: we aimed at extending the role of the interaction partner by introducing some positive acknowledgement of the participants’ activity. The results show no significant differences in the distribution of gestures between the two explanation methods, in contrast to the previous study. Implications for HRI are discussed focusing on issues relevant for the design of the robot’s communication skills to support the interaction loop with humans in home scenarios. (shrink)
