In a series of influential articles (Kim 1989b, 1992b, 1993a and 1998), Jaegwon Kim has developed a strong argument against nonreductive physicalism as a plausible solution to mental causation. The argument is commonly called the ’causal exclusion argument’, and it has become, over the years, one of the most serious threats to the nonreductivist point of view. Philosophers discussing moods have been struggling with finding a principled way to distinguish moods from emotions. This paper places itself distinctly against this mainstream. Its crucial upshot is that we do not need to postulate moods as a distinctive type of mental state, different from emotions. I will argue that alleged differences between moods and emotions that one can repeatedly find in the literature can be explained away simply in terms of certain features of emotions themselves. These features stem from (...) the inertia found in some emotional episodes. Two key such features are, first, the residual character of such episodes, according to which they tend to remain, or at least retain some of their characteristics, even after the emotional response as such is in principle over. The second key feature is that such emotional residues take the slightest opportunity to reactivate and develop as a new full-fledged emotional episode of the same kind as the one it originates from. I will also argue that my deflationary view on moods is as a matter of fact consistent with the scientific, or empirical, literature on moods and can also easily accommodate commonsense thinking about moods. Physicalism is usually understood as the claim that every empirical entity is or is determined by physical entities. The claim is however imprecise until it is clarified what are the physical entities in question. A sceptical argument in the form of a dilemma tries to show that this problem of formulation of physicalism cannot be adequately met. If we understand physical entities as the entities introduced by current physics, the resulting claim becomes most probably false. If we instead understand physical (...) entities as those entities introduced by some future ideal physics, the claim then becomes indeterminate in content. Both horns seem equally bad. In the first part of the paper, I survey the strengths and weaknesses of different proposed solutions to this problem of formulation. In the second part, I lay out a new formulation of physicalism, partly based on a mereological principle, which overcomes the dilemma, and argue that it is a correct formulation of physicalism to the extent that it rules out clear antiphysicalist scenarios and is compatible with clear physicalist scenarios. El artículo ingresa en la ontología del acontecer y recorre cuatro momentos. En primer lugar, distingue la visión del mundo en general, propia de la llamada “metafísica” de la visión del ser como acontecer, y busca un diálogo entre la perspectiva del ser en la metafísica y ontología de Hans-Georg Gadamer. En segundo lugar, analiza la estructura del acontecer o el modo como se despliega el movimiento del sentido, para determinar la lógica de la pregunta como estructura del acontecer. En (...) tercer lugar, entabla un diálogo entre la idea de acontecer y la categoría de finitud, para evidenciar que, cuando se piensa en una ontología del acontecer, esta remite a la determinaciónde la finitud. Most philosophers of mind nowadays espouse two metaphysical views: Nonreductive Physicalism and the causal efficacy of the mental. Throughout this work I will refer to the conjunction of both claims as the Causal Autonomy of the Mental. Nevertheless, this position is threatened by a number of difficulties which are far more serious than one would imagine given the broad consensus that it has generated during the last decades. This paper purports to offer a careful examination of some of these difficulties (...) and show the considerable efforts that one has to undertake in order to try to overcome them. The difficulties examined will concern only metaphysical problems common to all special science properties but not specific of mental properties. So, in proposing a functionalist version of Nonreductive Physicalism in what follows, I will not attempt to answer to well known objections such as the absent qualia argument and the like. This should not be interpreted as a limitation! in the scope of this work. On the contrary, in dealing with more general objections we will try to evaluate a position which entails (under common assumptions) the Causal Autonomy of the Mental, namely: Nonreductive Physicalism plus the causal efficacy of special science properties. El cordobés Damián de Castro, gran exponente de la platería rococó española en la centuria dieciochesca, realizó junto a otros artífices diferentes piezas para el cardenal Delgado y Venegas, arzobispo hispalense entre 1776 y 1781. It has been suggested in the literature about actions that one can honour the philosophical intuition lying behind Davidson’s argument for the Anscombe Thesis (the claim that by-sentences --sentcnccs used to report actions of the general form: ‘A X-ed by V-ing’-- involve two descriptions of the same action) without accepting the argument’s conclusion. The suggestion in question is to interpret by-sentences as referring to two synchronous but different actions of the same agent. I argue that this suggestion, together with two (...) plausible semantic principles about the naming of events and a reasonable metaphysical principle about the constitution of events, leads to certain ontological commitments which are hardly acccptable. My conclusion is then that in order to deny the Anscambe Thesis what must be done is to show that Davidson’s intuition is wrong. (shrink)

RESUMEN El presente artículo tiene como objetivo reflexionar a partir de las principales ideas filosóficas de Walter Benjamin y Frantz Fanon sobre el problema de la violencia política para luego mostrar las diferencias y posibles relaciones en los planteamientos de los autores. En un primer momento se mostrarán las denuncias hechas por los dos autores al sistema político moderno en cuanto a que la apariencia pacífica de las relaciones sociales se fundamenta en relaciones mediadas por la violencia. Luego, se analizarán (...) los principales planteamientos acerca de la violencia divina y de la violencia revolucionaria o contraviolencia en cada uno de los filósofos. Por último, se aportarán algunas conclusiones que contrasten las propuestas de este diálogo y permitan trazar límites y posibilidades en la lucha política que cada autor en su particularidad está presentando. ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to reflect about the main philosophical ideas of Walter Benjamin and Frantz Fanon on the problem of political violence and then to present the differences and possible relations in the author's approaches. At the first time, will show the denunciations made by the two authors to the modern political system as a pacific appearance of social relations that are based on relations mediated by violence. Later, the main approaches to divine violence and revolutionary violence or counter-violence in each of the philosopher will be analyzed. Finally, some conclusions will be drawn to contrast with this dialogue and thus allow us to observe the limits and possibilities in the political struggle that each author in his particularity is presenting. Humans and some animal species are able to learn stimulus-response associations by observing others' behavior. It saves energy and time and avoids the danger of trying the wrong actions. Observational learning depends on the capability of mapping the actions of others into our own behaviors, processing outcomes, and combining this knowledge to serve our goals. Observational learning plays a central role in the learning of social skills, cultural knowledge, and tool use. Thus, it is one of the fundamental processes in (...) which infants learn about and from adults. In this paper, we review current methodological approaches employed in observational learning research. We highlight the important role of the prefrontal cortex and cognitive flexibility to support this learning process, develop a new neural working model of observational learning, illustrate how imitation relates to observational learning, and provide directions for future research. Antes que económicos, éticos, o estrictamente sanitarios, los desafíos de la actual coyuntura son, sobre todo, políticos. Los sistemas de salud puestos en tensión, la coordinación entre los múltiples niveles de la gobernanza sanitaria, los planes de urgencia y de prevención que fueron o han debido ser puestos en marcha son todos constructos políticos, el fruto de mecanismos colectivos de decisión, el resultado de un conjunto de elecciones políticas. No basta, sin embargo, con detenernos a auditar un sistema tras un (...) choque planetario, más real que todos los simulacros que hubiéramos podido siquiera imaginar. También nuestra inteligencia colectiva ha sido aporreada. La urgencia y el pánico ante la subestimación de los riesgos y la falta de preparación para ellos han conducido a medidas drásticas, inéditas, que nos han hecho recordar los tiempos más sombríos del siglo XX. Algo ha cambiado radicalmente y todavía no estamos en condiciones de nombrarlo; lo presentimos, evidentemente, lo sabemos en parte en relación con la puesta en cuestión de las certezas y con la obligación de adoptar otras costumbres, otros modos de relacionarnos, otros hábitos de trabajo, de vida y aun de amar a nuestros seres queridos. RESUMEN: Hace treinta años la economía mundial, sobre todo en los países desarrollados, sufría, como ocurre ahora, una fuerte crisis económica. De aquella situación surgió un nuevo modelo de regulación de las economías capitalistas al que se llamó neoliberalismo. Desde entonces, con mayor o menor fuerza, ha estado presente en todos los países, aprovechando las condiciones de estos para repetir constantemente los mismos principios: la reducción del Estado, las ventajas del mercado, la autorregulación de éste, etc. Aunque sus premisas parezcan (...) simples o sencillas el neoliberalismo es un proyecto complejo y cambiante, cuya sustentabilidad política y económica se reinventa constantemente y cuya gobernanza y espacialidad es necesario observar y analizar si se quiere avanzar en alternativas viables. El neoliberalismo no vive apartado de proyectos alternativos sino que se mezcla con las alternativas, tiene una forma de gobernanza que muta, que cambia. Con este artículo pretendemos conocer algo más sobre las semejanzas y diferencias que esta ideología presenta según los países.ABSTRACT: Thirty years ago the world economy, especially the developed countries, suffered, as it is the case now, a severe economic crisis. That situation arose a new regulatory model of capitalist economies is called neo-liberalism. Since then, with more or less force, has been present in all countries, taking advantage of these conditions to constantly repeat the same principles: the reduction of the State, the advantages of the market and self-regulation of this, etc. Although its premises seem simple or simple neo-liberalism is a complex and changing project whose political and economic sustainability constantly reinvents itself and whose governance and spatiality is necessary to observe and analyze whether you want to advance in viable alternatives. Neo-liberalism does not live away from alternative projects but is mixed with the alternatives, has a form of governance that mutates, which changes. With this communication we seek to know something more about the similarities and differences that this ideology presents of the countries. Este trabalho tem como propósito central expor uma das aspirações mais caras à filosofia de Espinosa: a liberação da faculdade de julgar, tanto como perspectiva hermenêutica como em seu significado político. A partir deste conceito, pretendese reconstruir alguns tramos do programa do filósofo, sempre enfático a respeito da liberdade, tanto no âmbito ético como no político, e os diversos significados que esta tem em sua obra. Há uma liberdade concebida sub specie aeternitatis e uma liberdade sub specie durationis? A questão (...) leva a estabelecer a relação que este filósofo tem com as coisas do mundo político, sempre movido a partir de paixões e interesses e, frequentemente, afastado de um sentido virtuoso da liberdade. Sem abandonar as aspirações de um sentido superior da liberdade, o autor sustenta que Espinosa se propõe examinar o problema da liberdade em um contexto no qual há mais prejuízos que idéias adequadas, mais temores que esperanças, mais superstição que sabedoria. Sydney Shoemaker has been arguing for more than a decade for an account of the mind–body problem in which the notion of realization takes centre stage. His aim is to provide a notion of realization that is consistent with the multiple realizability of mental properties or events, and which explains: how the physical grounds the mental; and why the causal work of mental events is not screened off by that of physical events. Shoemaker's proposal consists of individuating properties in terms (...) of causal powers, and defining realization as a relation of inclusion between sets of causal powers. Thus, as the causal powers that define a mental property are a subset of the causal powers that characterize a physical property, it can be said that physical properties realize mental properties. In this paper we examine the physicalist credentials of Shoemaker's mind–body theory in relation to three important issues: the direction of the relation of dependence that the theory is committed to; the possibility of mental properties existing without being anchored by physical properties; and the compatibility of the theory with the causal closure of the physical world. We argue that Shoemaker's theory is problematic in all three respects. After that we consider whether the theory should count as a mind–body theory at all, given that it seems to be committed to a distorted view of mental properties. (shrink)

Con recurso a las filosofías de Heidegger y Gadamer, a las que ponemos a hablar con la teoría crítica, este artículo vuelve sobre el diálogo entre filosofía e historia. Cuando se leen estos dos autores en contraste con esa otra corriente de pensamiento, empiezan a hallarse resonancias e implicaciones mutuas, así como también las divergencias que se presentan. Desde esta confrontación pretendemos acceder a una consideración del tiempo y de la historia que permita elaborar desde allí una filosofía crítica. A lo largo del texto sostengo la tesis de que ni moralni lógicamente el argumento libertario, que justifica el terror y la violencia,es válido y, mucho menos, persuasivo. En contra de él, defiendo una concepciónde la libertad basada en la tolerancia de creencias, desprovista decontenidos doctrinarios o cosmovisivos.

In this paper I discuss, on behalf of the materialist, a consideration against the modal or conceivability argument against materialism which was first voiced in the third lecture of Naming and Necessity. This consideration is based on intertheoretic identities, statements in which both terms flanking the identity sign are theoretical. I argue that the defender of the conceivability argument has trouble to account for the appearance of contingency in those types of necessary identities. In fact, intertheoretic identities pose a formidable (...) dilemma for the defender of the modal argument and actually force the antimaterialist to say more about the semantics of theoretical terms than is implicit in standard discussions of the argument. I myself consider several options in this regard, the upshot being, however, that none of the alternative semantics for theoretical terms available to the antimaterialist is good enough to achieve the twofold aim which her modal argument requires, namely, to account for the a posteriori necessity of identities of this sort and, at the same time, to preserve her antimaterialist argument. Finally, in the last part of the paper, I argue that my defense of materialism can withstand some worries coming from David Chalmers’ recent views on a priori scrutability. (shrink)

The recent philosophical literature on emotional action is divided between Humeans, who think that emotional action, for all its peculiarities, can in fact be explained along Humean lines, that is, with belief–desire pairs; and emotionists, who think that emotional actions can only be explained by appealing to emotions and some of their special features. After reviewing this philosophical discussion, I will argue, first, that none of the philosophical accounts of emotional action analysed, whether Humean or emotionist, is satisfactory enough. Second, (...) I will argue that this philosophical debate has reached a stalemate, which does not allow further progress and which has not been able to provide us with a compelling account of such emotional actions where it is not obvious which is the goal involved. Third, I will argue that in order to overcome this stalemate, we need to approach emotional action in a radically different way. Drawing on ideas from some psychologists, I will suggest that the relevant philosophical issue should be whether emotional action is, or is not, goal-directed. Finally, I will suggest how emotional actions, particularly the most puzzling ones, can be accounted for according to this new approach. (shrink)

El presente texto es un experimento: el de leer la Novela del curioso impertinente con el fin de encontrar en ella modelos diversos de argumentación práctica. Persigo allí -particularmente en el diálogo inicial entre Anselmo y Lotario- la forma como se ofrecen tres formas básicas de razonamiento moral, según el conflicto pueda ser objeto de acuerdo y negociación, se dé entre principios del buen vivir y sentimientos que nos desbordan, o se presente entre deberes morales y las pautas elementales de (...) una acción razonable. Cada uno de estos conflictos da lugar a formas de argumentación bastante diferentes, pero ninguna de ellas se presenta como forma única o absoluta de conducir la reflexión moral. Sugiero que la "curiosidad impertinente" de Anselmo obedece a la absurda pretensión de pretender alcanzar en cuestiones morales más precisión que aquella que la materia consiente. Me apoyo para mi lectura del texto de Cervantes en pasajes de la Ética Nicomaquea de Aristóteles y algunos escritos de Martha Nussbaum. (shrink)

The evident remoteness between the religious postulates and the secular activity has led us to spiritual disorder and the oblivion of the authentic needs and aspirations of the human being. The current mentality and practice, towards what is considered merely useful or verifiable, has led us to this antinomy of polarized extremes, either towards an anthropocentrism that survives in a paradoxical happiness, disproportionate in the search for the strictly tangible, or towards an economic or ecological discourse that forgets the ontological (...) idea, and the authentic value and meaning of the human being. From a positive and normative analysis, this study aims to emphasize the importance of the so-called 'Integral Training’, taught by some university centers, as a promoter of the psychological and spiritual well-being, as well as the attitudes of sustainable entrepreneurship, in an ethical way and responsible. An argument is offered which purports to show that Davidson's argument for Physical Monism is inconsistent with the thesis of Anomalism of the Mental.

En este texto persigo dos propósitos. En primer lugar, abro un terreno común entre Wittgenstein y Gadamer a fin de entablar un diálogo entre los dos filósofos; dicho de otra manera, trato de ponerlos uno al lado del otro esperando que su proximidad haga que ganemos claridad sobre ambos. Muestro que el Wittgenstein de las Lecciones sobre estética y el Gadamer de la segunda parte de Verdad y método, especialmente en el apartado “La historicidad de la comprensión como principio hermenéutico”, (...) convergen en la tentativa de desarrollar una idea de ciencia no unitaria. Desde luego, en la búsqueda de este propósito desplazo el sentido de algunas de sus tesis, a fin de abrir ese terreno común. En segundo lugar, busco subrayar algunos puntos en los que me parece que la contribución de ambos autores a la filosofía de las ciencias sociales es especialmente importante. La problemática de la comprensión en ciencias sociales lleva consigo el germen de una concepción dualista de la ciencia. Ya el historicismo, desde Dilthey, construyó para las ciencias de la naturaleza y para las ciencias del espíritu un dualismo basado en la oposición entre explicación y comprensión. Esta controversia fue proseguida con la recepción de los planteamientos lingüísticos y hermenéuticos en ciencias sociales, que tomaban como hilo conductor las líneas de pensamiento Wittgenstein-Winch y Heidegger-Gadamer; este es uno de los puntos en que Wittgenstein y Gadamer pueden contribuir a las ciencias sociales.
