LK, LJ, Dual Intuitionistic Logic, and Quantum Logic.Hiroshi Aoyama - 2004 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 45 (4):193-213.
In this paper, we study the relationship among classical logic, intuitionistic logic, and quantum logic . These logics are related in an interesting way and are not far apart from each other, as is widely believed. The results in this paper show how they are related with each other through a dual intuitionistic logic . Our study is completely syntactical.

The Strong Completeness of a System Based on Kleene's Strong Three-Valued Logic.Hiroshi Aoyama - 1994 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 35 (3):355-368.
The present work, which was inspired by Kripke and McCarthy, is about a non-classical predicate logic system containing a truth predicate symbol. In this system, each sentence A is referred to not by a Gödel number but by its quotation name 'A'.

  9. Free Will and the Divergence Problem.Takuo Aoyama, Shogo Shimizu & Yuki Yamada - 2015 - Annals of the Japan Association for Philosophy of Science 23:1-18.
This paper presents what the authors call the ‘divergence problem’ regarding choosing between different future possibilities. As is discussed in the first half, the central issue of the problem is the difficulty of temporally locating the ‘active cause’ on the modal divergent diagram. In the second half of this paper, we discuss the ‘second-person freedom’ which is, strictly, neither compatibilist negative freedom nor incompatibilist positive freedom. The divergence problem leads us to two hypothetical views (i.e. the view of single-line determination (...)

  10. Can We Define Changes of Tense? The Insight and Failure of McTaggart's Argument.Takuo Aoyama - 2004 - Kagaku Tetsugaku 37 (2):59-70.
McTaggart has an insight that changes of property rely on changes of tense (McTaggart 1908). As I show in this paper, he fails to define A-series as a series for changes of tense, and therefore his proof for the unreality of time is unsuccessful. A-series found in the proof is reduced to a number of mere indexicals of time, and this reduction is pushed forward in Dummett's defense. My aim in this paper is not only to check the validity of (...)

How neuroscience accounts for the illusion of conscious will.Masao Ito - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (5):664-665.
Wegner's monograph presents the view that conscious will is a feeling that we experience when we perform an action through a mechanistic process of the brain, rather than a mental force that causes the action. The view is supported by several lines of evidence in which conscious will is dissociated from the actual performance of voluntary movements, as in automatism. The book further extends an insightful analysis of the mental system behind the illusion of conscious will and inspires neuroscientists to (...)

Why Achilles Need Not Catch the Tortoise.Takuo Aoyama - 2010 - Kagaku Tetsugaku 43 (2):81-94.
Achilles need not catch the tortoise, although Achilles is faster than the tortoise. Zeno's premise does not determine whether Achilles can catch up. In this paper, I clarify this fact through a critical examination of Noya (2005), which criticizes Aoyama (2002) and Uemura (2002). Noya's solution smuggles the unnecessary premise of equal ratio to make Achilles catch up. However, his solution gives a new idea about what speed is. In the last part of this paper, I develop this idea (...)

Zen and Comparative Studies: Part Two of a Two-Volume Sequel to Zen and Western Thought.Masao Abe - 1997 - University of Hawaii Press.
This volume concludes the two-volume sequel to Masao Abe's Zen and Western Thought. Like its companion, Buddhism and Interfaith Dialogue, this work contains many previously published essays and papers by Abe. Here he clarifies the true meaning of Buddhist emptiness in comparison with the Aristotelian notion of substance and the Whiteheadean notion of process.

Non-Being and Mu the Metaphysical Nature of Negativity in the East and the West.Masao Abe - 1975 - Religious Studies 11 (2):181 - 192.
In Volume i of his Systematic Theology , Paul Tillich says, ‘Being precedes nonbeing in ontological validity, as the word “nonbeing” itself indicates’ . He also says elsewhere, ‘Being “embraces” itself and nonbeing’, and ‘Nonbeing is dependent on the being it negates. “Dependent”—points first of all to the ontological priority of being over nonbeing’ . Tillich makes these statements in connection with a tendency among some Christian thinkers to take God as Being itself. The same understanding of the relation of (...)

    The Semantic Completeness of a Global Intuitionistic Logic.Hiroshi Aoyama - 1998 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 44 (2):167-175.
In this paper we will study a formal system of intuitionistic modal predicate logic. The main result is its semantic completeness theorem with respect to algebraic structures. At the end of the paper we will also present a brief consideration of its syntactic relationships with some similar systems.

Hmm-som に基づく認知行動の獲得とその学習.Minamino Katsuki Aoyama Kazumi - 2007 - Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence 22 (4):375-388.
An autonomous agent in the real world should learn its own sensor-motor coordination through interactions with the environment; otherwise the behaviors can not be grounded and they can easily be inappropriate in the variety of the environment. The sensor-motor signals are usually complex time sequence, therefore the cognitive action system of the agent has to handle them.In this paper, we propose a computational model of the cognitive action system that consists of a sensor space HMM-SOM, a motor space HMM-SOM and (...)

Zen and the Modern World: A Third Sequel to Zen and Western Thought.Masao Abe - 2003 - University of Hawaii Press.
Written by one of Japan's foremost contemporary thinkers and scholars, Zen and Modern Society is the third in a series of essay collections on Zen Buddhism as seen in the context of Western thought. Throughout his career, Masao Abe has articulated the meaning of Zen thought in a uniquely compelling way - at once, true to the original tradition and appropriately relevant to a variety of comparative standpoints, ranging from Biblical Judeo-Christianity to modern existentialism, phenomenology, and postmodernism. As a (...)
