Role-Playing Computer Ethics: Designing and Evaluating the Privacy by Design (PbD) Simulation.Katie Shilton, Donal Heidenblad, Adam Porter, Susan Winter & Mary Kendig - 2020 - Science and Engineering Ethics 26 (6):2911-2926.
There is growing consensus that teaching computer ethics is important, but there is little consensus on how to do so. One unmet challenge is increasing the capacity of computing students to make decisions about the ethical challenges embedded in their technical work. This paper reports on the design, testing, and evaluation of an educational simulation to meet this challenge. The privacy by design simulation enables more relevant and effective computer ethics education by letting students experience and make decisions about common (...)

Respecting difference and moving beyond regulation: Tasks for U.s. Bioethics commissions in the twenty-first century.Mary R. Anderlik - 2005 - Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal 15 (3):289-303.
This article focuses on two possible missions for a national bioethics commission. The first is handling differences of worldview, political orientation, and discipline. Recent work in political philosophy emphasizes regard for the dignity of difference manifested in "conversation" that seeks understanding rather than agreement. The President's Council on Bioethics gets a mixed review in this area. The second is experimenting with prophetic bioethics. "Prophetic bioethics" is a term coined by Daniel Callahan to describe an alternative to compromise-seeking "regulatory bioethics." It (...)

  11. Narrative and Closure in Fronto’s Epistvlae Ad Marcvm Caesarem Et Invicem Book 5.Mary K. Anastasi - forthcoming - Classical Quarterly:1-16.
This paper argues that the unknown editor of Ad M. Caesarem et inuicem arranged the letters in their non-chronological order so as to create a work that is essentially historical fiction, providing the reader with a romanticized version of the early life of Marcus Aurelius, a Marcopaedia of sorts or even a quasi-prequel to the Meditations. The paper demonstrates that the anomalous Book 5—full of shorter, less elaborate letters—can be read not only as an appendix composed of leftover letters but (...)

    Renaissance Madonnas and the Fantasies of Freud.Mary Bittner Wiseman - 1993 - Hypatia 8 (3):115 - 135.
Through the work of Julia Kristeva, this paper challenges Freud's laws that everyone is always already gendered, that the mother is feminine and every infant masculine, and that one cannot love the same (gender). The figure of the Madonna, seen through the paintings of Giovanni Bellini, is used to theorize the time in the life of a child before Oedipus and to undo the conceptual knot with which Freud has bound the feminine to the maternal.

For a little more than a decade, professional organizations and healthcare institutions have attempted to develop guidelines and policies to deal with seemingly intractable conflicts that arise between clinicians and patients over appropriate use of aggressive life-sustaining therapies in the face of low expectations of medical benefit. This article suggests that, although such efforts at conflict resolution are commendable on many levels, inadequate attention has been given to their potential negative effects upon particular groups of patients/proxies. Based on the well-documented (...)

Governance and Incentives: Is It Really All about the Money?Mary Beth Yount & Robert E. Till - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 159 (3):605-618.
Governance theories impact how corporations are run, which in turn impacts societal well-being. This dynamic is commonly accepted, as evidenced by the flood of articles exploring the links between corporate governance and corporate social responsibility (e.g., Hong et al. in J Bus Ethics 136:199–213, 2016). This article supplements current corporate governance theories with Catholic social thought (CST) to address burgeoning societal issues such as the increasing trust gap, income inequality (the compensation gap), and an overemphasis on financial compensation as the (...)

Feminism and Profit in American Hospitals: The Corporate Construction of Women's Health Centers.Mary K. Zimmerman & Jan E. Thomas - 2007 - Gender and Society 21 (3):359-383.
This article provides a critical analysis of the evolution and impact of hospital-sponsored women's health centers. Using original data gathered from interviews, participant observation, and content analysis of documents and brochures, the authors describe the development of four models of hospital-sponsored women's health centers and illustrate three specific mechanisms of the co-optation process. They show how many elements of feminist health care were used for the purpose of marketing and revenue production rather than for empowering women and transforming the delivery (...)

The Search for Habit in Classical Liberalism.Mary Poovey - 2013 - Body and Society 19 (2-3):263-274.
Using the Online Library of Liberty database, which is sponsored by the Liberty Fund, I explore the role played by the word habit in the history of classical liberalism. At the same time, I interrogate the usefulness of the Search function, the digital finding tool provided by the website. Simultaneously a survey of the changing uses of habit and a meditation on our scholarly research habits, this article investigates the intersections between ideas about free agency and habitual behaviors. It also (...)

Practicing Critical Pedagogy: The Influences of Joe L. Kincheloe.Mary Frances Agnello & William Martin Reynolds (eds.) - 2015 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
This edited text recaptures many of Joe L. Kincheloe's national and international influences. An advocate and a scholar in the social, historical, and philosophical foundations of education, he dedicated his professional life to his vision of critical pedagogy. The authors in this volume found mentorship, as well as kinship, in Joe and express the many ways in which he and his work made profound differences in their work and lives. Joe's research always pushed the limits of what critically reflective and (...)

    The Factuality of Values.Mary-Barbara Zeldin - 1983 - der 16. Weltkongress Für Philosophie 2:1434-1441.
The distinction of fact and value and the problems entailed by it are concerns only for modern, Western thought. The distinction is supported by Kant, who, however, also attempts to solve its consequent problems. His first attempt is made by arguing that the standard of value is itself a fact. This brings fact and value together, but only in an intelligible world. Kant's second attempt is found in the third Critique in the argument that man, as both rational and animal, (...)

Knowledge and intention can penetrate early vision.Mary A. Peterson - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (3):389-390.
Although some types of cognition may not affect early vision, there is ample evidence that other types of cognition do. Evidence indicating that early vision is penetrable by direct manipulation of viewers' perceptual intentions and by knowledge of the structure of familiar objects is reviewed, and related to both the Pylyshyn target article and Fodor (1983).
