From Violence to Speaking Out: Apocalypse and Expression in Foucault, Derrida and Deleuze.Leonard Lawlor - 2016 - Edinburgh University Press.
Drawing on a career-long exploration of 1960s French philosophy, Leonard Lawlor seeks a solution to 'the problem of the worst violence'. The worst violence is the reaction of total apocalypse without remainder; it is the reaction of complete negation and death; it is nihilism. Lawlor argues that it is not just transcendental violence that must be minimised: all violence must itself be reduced to its lowest level. He offers new ways of speaking to best achieve the least violence, which he (...)

Superficialismo radicale: soggetti, emancipazione e politica.Mirko Alagna & Leonard Mazzone (eds.) - 2021 - Pisa: Edizioni ETS.

  12. De-extinction and the conception of species.Leonard Finkelman - 2018 - Biology and Philosophy 33 (5-6):32.
Developments in genetic engineering may soon allow biologists to clone organisms from extinct species. The process, dubbed “de-extinction,” has been publicized as a means to bring extinct species back to life. For theorists and philosophers of biology, the process also suggests a thought experiment for the ongoing “species problem”: given a species concept, would a clone be classified in the extinct species? Previous analyses have answered this question in the context of specific de-extinction technologies or particular species concepts. The thought (...)

    A Theory of Philosophical Fallacies.Leonard Nelson - 2016 - Cham: Imprint: Springer.
Presented as a Vorlesung in the German philosophical tradition, this book presents the most detailed account of Nelson's method of argument analysis, celebrated by many luminaries such as Karl Popper. It was written in 1921 in opposition to the relativistic, subjectivistic and nihilistic tendencies of Nelson's time. The book contains an exposition of a method that is a further development of Kant's transcendental dialectics, followed by an application to the critical analysis of arguments by many famous thinkers, including Bentham, Mill, (...)

    Difference and Dependency, Violence and Sublimation.Leonard Lawlor - 2018 - Philosophy Today 62 (2):607-617.
This essay assesses Kelly Oliver’s long publication career by focusing on two novel ideas we find in her work. Both are ideas belonging to the new kind of ethics Oliver envisions. On the one hand, there is the idea of dependency. Through dependency, she aims to ground an obligation to care for the ones who provide the care to the dependents. The second idea is sublimation. Through her studies of psychoanalysis, Oliver shows that sublimation allows the subject to distance herself (...)

    System der philosophischen Rechtslehre.Leonard Nelson - 1920 - Leipzig,: P. Reinhold.
This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and (...)

Typische Denkfehler in der Philosophie: Nachschrift der Vorlesung vom Sommersemester 1921.Leonard Nelson & Dieter Birnbacher (eds.) - 2011 - Philosophische Bibliothek.

    Altruism, benevolence and culture.Leonard Nunney - 2000 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 7 (1-2):1-2.
Human cultural groups appear well designed, but is this apparent design due to altruism or due to self-serving behaviours? Sober and Wilson argue that human cultures are founded on group-selected altruism. This argument assumes that individually selected self-serving traits are not being misidentified as altruistic. A simple definition of individual selection suggests that Sober and Wilson fail to separate one such trait, called benevolence, from altruism. Benevolent individuals act selfishly but provide an incidental benefit to their neighbours. The female-biased Hamiltonian (...)

On Liberty - Ed. Kahn.Leonard Kahn (ed.) - 2014 - Peterborough, CA: Broadview Press.
In this work, Mill reflects on the struggle between liberty and authority and defends the view that “the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.” He questions attempts to limit freedom of conscience and religion, freedom to pursue one’s own interests, and freedom to unite, and he defends a liberal political and social order in which there is considerable room for personal development (...)
