    The Liberal Arts, Language and Transcendence.Gilbert R. Prost - 2002 - Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies 14 (1-2):47-67.
The traditional function of the Liberal Arts, in contrast to courses in science, was to help students learn how to live meaningful lives. This meant that theology and the study of the Bible as Revelation were a crucial peart of the curriculum. Yet, since the Enlightenment, marked by the rejection of Revelation, the university has depended on reason alone for answering the question: How should I live? But this conceptual shift from Revelation and reason to positivistic reason had some serious (...)

    On the Interference of Fullerenes and Other Massive Particles.S. Sulcs, B. C. Gilbert & C. F. Osborne - 2002 - Foundations of Physics 32 (8):1251-1271.
We report the results of an optical analogue of the fullerene molecule diffraction experiment. Our results, and an analysis of the fullerene experiment, suggest that the patterns observed in the latter can be explained using a localized particle model. There is no evidence that the grating period contributed to the published fullerene diffraction pattern. De Broglie waves, if they exist, are unlikely to have played a significant part in the fullerene diffraction experiment. The observed patterns are not consistent with those (...)

  20. Mattel, Lead Paint, and Magnets: Ethics and Supply Chain Management.Joel Wisner & Joseph Gilbert - 2010 - Ethics and Behavior 20 (1):33-46.
Over a period of 19 months in 2006 and 2007, Mattel recalled approximately 14 million toys. The company was subjected to numerous lawsuits and regulatory actions and suffered severe damage to its reputation. Two issues were involved: excessive levels of lead in numerous toy surface paints and small detachable magnets in some toys, which could be swallowed. An examination of the facts shows that two different ethical situations were involved—one concerning product design and the other concerning manufacturing practices of Mattel's (...)

Prices, Profits and Rhythms of Accumulation.Gilbert Abraham-Frois & Edmond Berrebi - 1997 - Cambridge University Press.
This book is concerned with the relationship between processes of accumulation and aspects of distribution. The analyses of Ricardo and Marx are reevaluated and redeveloped in the light of advances made by von Neumann, Sraffa and more contemporary theoreticians. Joint production systems are integrated into the analysis, which allows the authors to define the effect of the theorem of non-substitution, and to reconsider the problem of obsolescence and the choice of technique.

Genetic research powered by social media has the potential for great benefit: to quickly and inexpensively gather the massive amounts of data that are essential for understanding the genetic basis of diseases. But what are the ethical soft spots or gaps? I invite readers to write commentaries on this question for the blog of the Hastings Center Report.

On an argument for the impossibility of prediction in the social sciences.Margaret P. Gilbert & Fred R. Berger - manuscript
This paper criticises a line of argument adopted by peter winch, Karl popper, And others, To the effect that the course of human history cannot be predicted. On this view it is impossible to predict in a particularly detailed way certain events ('original acts') on which important social developments depend. We analyze the argument, Showing that one version fails: original acts are in principle predictable in the relevant way. A cogent version is presented; this requires a special definition for 'original (...)

  42. Substance et présence. Derrida et Marion, critiques de Husserl.Paul Gilbert - 1994 - Gregorianum 75 (1):95-133.
