Revocable Anonymisation in Video Surveillance: A ‘Digital Cloak of Invisibility’.Feiten Linus, Sebastian Sester, Christian Zimmermann, Sebastian Weydner-Volkmann, Laura Wehle & Bernd Becker - 2016 - In Feiten Linus, Sebastian Sester, Christian Zimmermann, Sebastian Weydner-Volkmann, Laura Wehle & Bernd Becker, Technology and Intimacy: Choice or Coercion. HCC 2016. IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, vol 474. Cham.: pp. 314-327.
Video surveillance is an omnipresent phenomenon in today’s metropolitan life. Mainly intended to solve crimes, to prevent them by realtime-monitoring or simply as a deterrent, video surveillance has also become interesting in economical contexts; e.g. to create customer profiles and analyse patterns of their shopping behaviour. The extensive use of video surveillance is challenged by legal claims and societal norms like not putting everybody under generalised suspicion or not recording people without their consent. In this work we propose a technological (...)

Digitale Tarnkappe: Anonymisierung in Videoaufnahmen.Sebastian Weydner-Volkmann, Linus Feiten, Christian Zimmermann, Sebastian Sester, Laura Wehle & Bernd Becker - 2016 - Informatik 2016 – Proceedings der Tagung Vom 26.-30. September 2016 in Klagenfurt.

Give Up Flights? Psychological Predictors of Intentions and Policy Support to Reduce Air Travel.Jessica M. Berneiser, Annalena C. Becker & Laura S. Loy - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Concerted, timely action for mitigating climate change is of uttermost importance to keep global warming as close to 1.5°C as possible. Air traffic already plays a strong role in driving climate change and is projected to grow—with only limited technical potential for decarbonizing this means of transport. Therefore, it is desirable to minimize the expansion of air traffic or even facilitate a reduction in affluent countries. Effective policies and behavioral change, especially among frequent flyers, can help to lower greenhouse gas (...)

The health care needs of rural populations often differ from those of their urban counterparts. And the ethical dilemmas that caregivers face are distinctively shaped in rural settings, not only by resource constraints, but by the nature of life in small, close-knit communities as well.

About Turtles, Pickpockets, and Transdisciplinarity: Some Reflections on the Epistemological Implications of Flânerie.Laura Peters - 2012 - World Futures 68 (3):212 - 219.
Lately the concept of flânerie has raised an intense academic debate: The flâneur can be found much more frequently, not only in literary texts and in literary studies, but also in cultural and historical sciences, postcolonial studies, anthropology, and philosophy as well as in the field of popular science. Starting with a review of literary and philosophical traditions and the further developments of the concept of flâneur, this article aims to explore the epistemological implications of flânerie and to read them (...)

Disgust and fear in response to spiders.Laura L. Vernon & Howard Berenbaum - 2002 - Cognition and Emotion 16 (6):809-830.
We examined disgust and fear responses to spiders in spider-distressed and nondistressed individuals. Undergraduate participants (N = 134) completed questionnaires concerning responses to spiders and other potentially aversive stimuli, as well as measures of disgust sensitivity, anxious arousal, worry, and anhedonic depression. In addition, we obtained self-report and facial expressions of disgust and fear while participants were exposed to a live tarantula. Both spider distressed and nondistressed individuals reported disgust and exhibited disgust facial expressions in response to a tarantula. Disgust (...)

For more than 100,000 years, H. sapiens lived as foragers, in small family groups with low reproductive variance. A minority of men were able to father children by two or three women; and a majority of men and women were able to breed. But after the origin of farming around 10,000 years ago, reproductive variance increased. In civilizations which began in Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, and China, and then moved on to Greece and Rome, kings collected thousands of women, whose children (...)

Biotechnology and Transgenics in Agriculture and Aquaculture: The Perspective from Ecosystem Integrity.Laura Westra - 1998 - Environmental Values 7 (1):79-96.
New agricultural technologies are often justified morally in terms of their expected benefits, e.g., feeding the world's hungry. Such justifications stand or fall, not only on whether such benefits are indeed forthcoming, but on whether or not they are outweighed by attendant dangers. The practical details of easch case are, therefore, all-important. In this paper agriculture and aquaculture are examined from the perspective of ecosystem integrity, and with further reference to the uncertain effects of anthropogenic changes in the earth's atmosphere. (...)

Post-normal science, the precautionary principle and the ethics of integrity.Laura Westra - 1997 - Foundations of Science 2 (2):237-262.
Present laws and regulations even in democratic countries are not sufficient to prevent the grave environmental threats we face. Further, even environmental ethics, when they remain anthropocentric cannot propose a better approach. I argue that, taking in considerations the precautionary principle, and adopting the perspective of post-normal science, the ethics of integrity suggest a better way to reduce ecological threats and promote the human good globally.

Bildliche Darstellung und die Simulation der Wahrnehmung.Alexander Becker - 2011 - Zeitschrift für Ästhetik Und Allgemeine Kunstwissenschaft 56 (2):55-78.
The paper presents a new proposal how to explain pictorial representation. Starting point is the phenomenological idea that pictures, in the first place, make something visible (instead of being a sign of something). Making something visible is taken as an achievement of the faculty of imagination, and the faculty of imagination in turn is taken to be a variety of our faculty to simulate (referring here to the concept of simulation as it is used in contemporary cognitive psychology, according to (...)

Die Wiederholung der Philosophie: Kierkegaards Kulturkritik und ihre Folgen.Hjördis Becker-Lindenthal - 2015 - Boston: De Gruyter.
Kierkegaard understood his thinking as philosophy confronting its own end. In campaigning against the existential amnesia of the 19th century, he revived the intellectual figure of a kind of philosophizing with roots in both the Socratic method and the apophatic reflections of Meister Eckhart. The Young Hegelians philosophy of action thereby became action of the text. The aim: existentially to move the reader.".

Methodischer Mechanismus und instrumentelle Vernunft: Warum Lebewesen keine Organismen sind.Ralf Becker - 2020 - Deutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 68 (5):734-749.
Mechanistic explanations – especially mechanistic models – are commonly used to describe living beings. But their usage should be scrutinised closely. This text elucidates the motives, conditions and implications of a so called ‘methodical mechanism’. Due to the fact that humans cannot properly explain certain biotic processes, they have to rely on their technical knowledge to explain them. The history of philosophy and scientific thinking is, therefore, intertwined with the history of technology: the way humans interpret and explain natural phenomena (...)
