Moral Ambiguities in the Bombing of Monte Cassino.Nigel De Lee - 2005 - Journal of Military Ethics 4 (2):129-138.
Abstract The circumstances in which the decisions to bomb the Abbey and town of Monte Cassino in 1944 were taken were complex and difficult, and complicated by factual uncertainties. It is possible to make a case for excusing the bombing of the Abbey on grounds of military necessity without justifying it. It is not possible to excuse the manner in which the bombing was conducted, which deprived the attack of its intended military utility and had an effect on the Allied (...)

The Relationship of Insufficient Effort Responding and Response Styles: An Online Experiment.Gene M. Alarcon & Michael A. Lee - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
While self-report data is a staple of modern psychological studies, they rely on participants accurately self-reporting. Two constructs that impede accurate results are insufficient effort responding and response styles. These constructs share conceptual underpinnings and both utilized to reduce cognitive effort when responding to self-report scales. Little research has extensively explored the relationship of the two constructs. The current study explored the relationship of the two constructs across even-point and odd-point scales, as well as before and after data cleaning procedures. (...)

(When) Is There a Christian Responsibility to Gossip?Matthew Lee Anderson - 2022 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 42 (1):135-151.
This paper offers a Thomistic defense of gossip as a licit means of protecting third parties from harm by known offenders. After first clarifying what constitutes gossip, it draws from Thomas Aquinas to identify the narrow set of conditions under which gossip might be both permissible and obligatory. It concludes by specifying how the duty to gossip might work in Christian institutions, and especially within institutions where there are weak systems of formal accountability.

The evolutionary social psychology of religious beliefs.Lee A. Kirkpatrick - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (6):741-741.
Atran & Norenzayan (A&N) are correct that religion is an evolutionary by-product, not an adaptation, but they do not go far enough. Once supernatural beliefs are enabled by processes they describe, numerous social-cognitive mechanisms related to attachment, social exchange, coalitional psychology, status and dominance, and kinship are crucial for explaining the specific forms religion takes and individual and cultural differences therein.

Effectiveness of data auditing as a tool to reinforce good research data management (RDM) practice: a Singapore study.Yusuf Ali, Ser Lin Celine Lee & Hui Xing Lau - 2021 - BMC Medical Ethics 22 (1):1-8.
BackgroundInstitutions, funding agencies and publishers are placing increasing emphasis on good research data management (RDM). RDM lapses in medical science can result in questionable data and cause the public’s confidence in the scientific community to crumble. A fledgling medical school in a young university in Singapore has mandated every funded research project to have a data management plan (DMP). However, researchers’ adherence to their DMPs was unknown until the school embarked on routine data auditing. We hypothesize that research data auditing (...)

HIV testing among clients in high HIV prevalence venues: Disparities between older and younger adults.C. L. Ford, S. J. Lee, S. P. Wallace, T. Nakazono, P. A. Newman & W. E. Cunningham - unknown
© 2014 Taylor Francis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine human immunodeficiency virus testing of every client presenting for services in venues where HIV prevalence is high. Because older adults have particularly poor prognosis if they receive their diagnosis late in the course of HIV disease, any screening provided to younger adults in these venues should also be provided to older adults. We examined aging-related disparities in recent and ever HIV testing in a probability sample of at-risk (...)

    Authority in Sport.Victor Lee Austin - 2012 - Studies in Christian Ethics 25 (1):65-72.
Herbert McCabe uses football (soccer) as an analogy for Christian ethics, the sports game being an illuminating abstraction from the concreteness of moral life. This paper explores three authorities in the life-abstraction that is sport: the referee, the coach, and the exemplary player. (1) The referee bears practical epistemic authority: he declares what counts as a play within the rules, and what shall be excluded as an invalid (non-rule-following) play. There are interesting authority-problems that arise when referees err. In ethics, (...)

    Scientific Method as a Stage Process.Donald S. Lee Donald S. Lee - 1968 - Dialectica 22 (1):28-44.
. — The scientific method can be understood as a sequence of stages of types of activity undertaken to construct explanatory hypotheses which are verifiable. These stages, origination, deduction, experimentation, and confirmation, are each subdivided into several phases. The stages and phases are related by an order of precedence in which any given phase has to be preceded by the one before it but does not necessarily lead to the one after it. Such a dynamic outline of the growth of (...)

The Social Psychology of Morality.Joseph P. Forgas, Lee J. Jussim & Paul A. M. Van Lange (eds.) - 2016 - New York: Psychology Press.
Ever since Plato’s ‘Republic’ was written over two thousand years ago, one of the main concerns of social philosophy and later empirical social science was to understand the moral nature of human beings. The faculty to think and act in terms of overarching moral values is as much a defining hallmark of our species as is our intelligence, so _homo moralis_ is no less an appropriate term to describe humans as _homo sapiens_. This volume makes a case for the pivotal (...)

What is a group? Conceptual clarity can help integrate evolutionary and social scientific research on cooperation.Drew Gerkey & Lee Cronk - 2014 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 37 (3):260-261.
Smaldino argues that evolutionary theories of social behavior do not adequately explain the emergence of group-level traits, including differentiation of roles and organized interactions among individuals. We find Smaldino's account to be commendable but incomplete. Our commentary focuses on a simple question that has not been adequately addressed: What is a group?

Hegel and the Metaphysical Frontiers of Political Theory.Eric Lee Goodfield (ed.) - 2014 - New York: Routledge.
For over one hundred and fifty years G.W.F. Hegel’s ghost has haunted theoretical understanding and practice. His opponents first, and later his defenders, have equally defined their programs against and with his. In this way Hegel’s political thought has both situated and displaced modern political theorizing. This book takes the reception of Hegel’s political thought as a lens through which contemporary methodological and ideological prerogatives are exposed. It traces the nineteenth century origins of the positivist revolt against Hegel’s legacy forward (...)

Transcendental Multitude in Thomas Aquinas.Joshua Lee Harris - 2015 - Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association 89:109-118.
In this study, I consider the viability of what is perhaps one of the more “obscure” transcendentals in Aquinas’s work—that is, the concept of multitudo transcendens. This strange notion is mentioned explicitly (as a member of the transcendentia, that is) on four occasions in Aquinas’s oeuvre. Despite its apparent difficulties, i.e., the clear difficulties associated with claiming that ens is really convertible with both unum and multitudo, I suggest that Aquinas’s affirmation of multitudo as a transcendental is a conceptually coherent (...)

High-frequency synchronisation in schizophrenia: Too much or too little?Leanne M. Williams, Kwang-Hyuk Lee, Albert Haig & Evian Gordon - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (1):109-110.
Phillips & Silverstein's focus on schizophrenia as a failure of “cognitive coordination” is welcome. They note that a simple hypothesis of reduced Gamma synchronisation subserving impaired coordination does not fully account for recent observations. We suggest that schizophrenia reflects a dynamic compensation to a core deficit of coordination, expressed either as hyper- or hyposynchronisation, with neurotransmitter systems and arousal as modulatory mechanisms.
