Assessing metacognitive skills in waking and sleep: A psychometric analysis of the Metacognitive, Affective, Cognitive Experience (MACE) questionnaire.Tracey L. Kahan & Kieran T. Sullivan - 2012 - Consciousness and Cognition 21 (1):340-352.
The Metacognitive, Affective, Cognitive Experience questionnaire was designed to assess metacognition across sleep and waking . The present research evaluates the psychometric properties of the MACE. Data from two recent studies were used to assess the inter-item consistency, test–retest reliability, and factorial, convergent, and discriminant validity of the MACE. Results show that the MACE is a reliable measure with good construct validity. Exploratory factor analyses revealed one self-regulation and two monitoring factors. One monitoring factor emphasized monitoring internal conditions; the other (...)

    Contemporary Mind - Some Modern Answers.J. W. N. Sullivan - 2017 - H. Toulmin.
"Contemporary Mind - Some Modern Answers" is a fantastic collection of essays by English science writer John W. Sullivan. They deal with a range of subjects, ranging from mysticism and immortality to the relationship between science and art. John William Navin Sullivan (1886 - 1937) was a literary journalist and popular science writer most famous for his study of Beethoven. He is also responsible for having written some of the earliest non-technical accounts of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, (...)

    Trespass, Animals and Democratic Engagement.Clare McCausland, Siobhan O’Sullivan & Scott Brenton - 2013 - Res Publica 19 (3):205-221.
Since at least the 1970s, one of the stock standard tools in the animal protection movement’s arsenal has been illegal entry into factory farms and animal research facilities. This activity has been followed by the publication of images and footage captured inside those otherwise socially invisible places. This activity presents a conundrum: trespass is illegal and it is an apparent violation of private property rights. In this paper we argue that trespass onto private property can be justified as an act (...)

Organizational Responses to Negative Evaluation by External Stakeholders.Amy E. Randel, Kimberly S. Jaussi & Stephen S. Standifird - 2009 - Business and Society 48 (4):438-466.
The authors offer a framework based on the stakeholder, organizational identity, and strategic response literatures to specify how organizational identity influences an organization’s responses to negative evaluation in the public domain by external stakeholders. The framework proposes how the number of organizational identities possessed by an organization and the level of perceived organizational identity threat affect which type of response an organization will adopt. Directions for future research are developed and implications for practicing managers are proposed.

    Epistemic Injustice and Self-Injury: A Concept with Clinical Implications.Patrick Sullivan - 2019 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 26 (4):349-362.
SELF-INJURY IS A COMPLEX phenomenon that is encountered on a regular basis by health care professionals in mental health care. In this article, I use the concept of epistemic injustice to examine this complex phenomenon and argue that this helps us to understand developments in the way we think about and support people who self-injure. Individuals with lived experience have important knowledge about the nature of self-injury and particularly how it relates to them. If the credibility of this knowledge is (...)

Machiavelli's three Romes: religion, human liberty, and politics reformed.Vickie B. Sullivan - 1996 - DeKalb, Ill.: Northern Illinois University Press.
Machiavelli's ambiguous treatment of religion has fueled a contentios and long-standing debate among scholars. Whereas some insist that Machiavelli is a Christian, others maintain he is a pagan. Sullivan mediates between these divergent views by arguing that he is neither but that he utilizes elements of both understandings arrayed in a wholly new way. She develops her argument by distinguishing among the three Romes that can be understood as existing in Machiavelli's political thought: the first is the Rome of (...)

As the frequency of internet-based research has increased, it is important for researchers to consider how the conditions in which data are collected may influence the risks to participants. In particular, because internet-based data collection often occurs outside a clinical or research setting, there may be unintentional disclosures of a participant's involvement in a research study of which the researcher is unaware. The current analysis examined the responses of men who have sex with men participating in an internet-based HIV behavioural (...)

Race After Beauvoir.Shannon Sullivan - 2017 - In Laura Hengehold & Nancy Bauer (eds.), A Companion to Simone de Beauvoir. Hoboken: Wiley. pp. 449–462.
Focusing on The Second Sex, this chapter examines concerns about the divisions of gender and race in Beauvoir's work and provides an intersectional reading of the role of physical violence in the gendering and racing of young girls in “The Girl” chapter of the book. The chapter then highlights the role of biology in the existential infrastructure provided in the first three chapters of The Second Sex to argue that Beauvoir can be viewed as a forerunner of contemporary critical understandings (...)

Ethical slippages, shattered horizons, and the zebra striping of the unconscious: Fanon on social, bodily, and psychical space.Shannon Sullivan - 2004 - Philosophy and Geography 7 (1):9-24.
While Sigmund Freud and Maurice Merleau‐Ponty both acknowledge the role that spatiality plays in human life, neither pays any explicit attention to the intersections of race and space. It is Franz Fanon who uses psychoanalysis and phenomenology to provide an account of how the psychical and lived bodily existence of black people is racially constituted by a racist world. More precisely, as I argue in this paper, Fanon's work demonstrates how psychical and bodily spatiality cannot be adequately understood apart from (...)

    Belief, Imagination, and Delusion.Ema Sullivan-Bissett (ed.) - 2022 - Oxford University Press.
This volume brings together recent work on the nature of belief, imagination, and delusion. Whilst philosophers of mind and epistemology employ notions of belief and imagination in their theorizing, parallel work seeking to make these notions more precise continues. Delusions are standardly taken to be bizarre beliefs occurring in the clinical population, which do not respond to evidence. The purpose of this collection of essays is to get clearer on the nature of belief and imagination, the ways in which they (...)

The Association Between Locus of Control and Psychopathology: A Cross-Cohort Comparison Between a UK (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children) and a Japanese (Tokyo Teen Cohort) Cohort.Sarah Sullivan, Syudo Yamasaki, Shuntaro Ando, Kaori Endo, Kiyoto Kasai, Iryna Culpin, Christina Dardani, Stanley Zammit & Atsushi Nishida - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Background: An external locus of control is associated with poorer psychopathology in individualist cultures, but associations are reported to be weaker in collectivist cultures where an external style is less maladaptive. We investigated the prospective association between externality and psychotic-like experiences and depressive symptoms and compared the strength of associations between a UK and a Japanese cohort.Method: Cross-cultural cohort study of a UK and a Japanese cohort. Externality was assessed using the Children's Nowicki and Strickland Internal, External Scale and DS (...)

Humans have binding moral obligations and the capacity to understand these obligations and to act upon them. Rarely do our moral obligations come to us under perfect circumstances. It seems necessary, then, that if the circumstances surrounding our moral decisions are imperfect, our obligations within an imperfect moral situation should be different from what they would be in a perfect scenario. This is true especially if the circumstances surrounding our moral obligation have been altered due to no fault of our (...)

Does psychiatry need the Husserlian detour?Mark Sullivan - 1999 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 6 (2-3):296-299.
[opening paragraph]: Reading the article by Naudin et al. on Husserlian reduction in psychiatry prompted me to review a few chapters of my intellectual autobiography. I entered graduate school enamoured with Husserl, believing him a potent and necessary antidote to the hubris of the ‘natural attitude’ expounded by natural science. But I left graduate school believing that Husserl was too wrapped up in the debate as to whether reality was objective or subjective. Hence I ask in response to Naudin et (...)

    Economic models are not evolutionary models.Roger J. Sullivan & I. I. I. Henry F. Lyle - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (6):836-836.
Henrich et al. reject the “selfishness axiom” within a narrowly-defined economic model, and are premature in claiming that they have demonstrated cross-cultural variability in “selfishness” as defined in broader evolutionary theory. We also question whether a key experimental condition, anonymity, can be maintained in the small, cohesive, social groupings employed in the study.

The Introduction begins with a discussion of the misalignment in higher education between the expanded aims of many institutions and the actual organization of their learning. Three key elements of the Lilly Endowment’s Program on the Theological Exploration of Vocation is examined in this context: the theme of vocation and its integration of curricular and co-curricular learning to address the “whole student,” practices of reflection drawn from different religious traditions and their successful adaptation by the vocation programs, and the educative (...)
