Given its non-invasive nature, there is increasing interest in the use of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation across basic, translational and clinical research. Contemporaneously, tVNS can be achieved by stimulating either the auricular branch or the cervical bundle of the vagus nerve, referred to as transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation and transcutaneous cervical VNS, respectively. In order to advance the field in a systematic manner, studies using these technologies need to adequately report sufficient methodological detail to enable comparison of results between (...) studies, replication of studies, as well as enhancing study participant safety. We systematically reviewed the existing tVNS literature to evaluate current reporting practices. Based on this review, and consensus among participating authors, we propose a set of minimal reporting items to guide future tVNS studies. The suggested items address specific technical aspects of the device and stimulation parameters. We also cover general recommendations including inclusion and exclusion criteria for participants, outcome parameters and the detailed reporting of side effects. Furthermore, we review strategies used to identify the optimal stimulation parameters for a given research setting and summarize ongoing developments in animal research with potential implications for the application of tVNS in humans. Finally, we discuss the potential of tVNS in future research as well as the associated challenges across several disciplines in research and clinical practice. (shrink)

Parues pour la premiere fois en 1938, les Etudes kierkegaardiennes de Jean Wahl constitutent a tous egards une somme incontournable pour comprendre le sens de la philosophie de Kierkegaard et la place si originale qu'elle occupe dans l'histoire de la philosophie. L'auteur s'efforce d'y faire apparaitre le lien existant entre les evenements qui marquerent la vie de Kierkegaard et la formation de ses concepts fondamentaux. Par ce biais, l'auteur montre comment la theorie des trois stades de l'existence fait appel (...) a une dialectique qualitative, opposee a la dialectique hegelienne. L'auteur montre enfin que la theorie des trois stades de la croyance et de l'existence qui lui sont liees sont inseparables d'une lutte entreprise contre les pensees qui contribuerent a la genese de la pensee de Kierkegaard et qu'il s'agit a present pour lui de depasser: il n'y a pas de chemin qui conduit de la pensee, du cogito, a l'etre, au sum, car l'existence est l'etre hors de toute pensee. Jean-Marc Ferry est titulaire de la Chaire de Philosophie de l'Europe de l'Université de Nantes, professeur honoraire en Science politique et Philosophie morale à l'Université libre de Bruxelles, auteur notamment des Puissances de l'expérience (1991), l'une des oeuvres les plus importantes récemment publiées dans le champ de la philosophie sociale et politique, de la philosophie tout court (Paul Ricoeur), La Question de l'État européen (2001), Les Grammaires de l'intelligence (2004), La Raison et la Foi (2016).

As part of an article symposium on Partha Dasgupta and Sanjeev Goyal’s “Narrow Identities”, Jean-Paul Carvalho reflects on the concept of narrow identity and the ways of modelling its emergence.

The aim of this paper is to redefine the notion of "heroism" through an investigation in the sociopolitics of popular Medias and especially the characters of Superheroes as they appear in comics of the late thirties and in the cinematographic industry since the nineties. This paper will pay a large tribute to the works of Gabriel Tarde, Henri Bergson and Gilles Deleuze whose concepts will be an imderlying constant reference. My purpose is to redefine the notion of heroism through the (...) notions of imitation and innovation, defined by Tarde as the fundamental principles of social life, and redefined by Deleuze as the collective expression of the primitive ontological forces of Repetition and Difference. Actually, the notion of imitation and innovation seem more appropriate to the study of popular culture phenomena than the statistic sociology of Durkheim. Based on that philosophical background, I will give an analysis of the political changes occurring in westem contemporary societies through an analysis of the representation of Superheroes. (shrink)

Today we know, and this will be the subject of this article, that the universe is in continuous evolution, even revolution. This observation has been possible only quite recently. It was necessary to wait for the observations of distant galaxies, undertaken between 1930 and 1950 by Edwin P. Hubble, the astronomer who was the first to show that the universe as a whole is presently expanding. We know now also that the form of the constellations closest to us, such as (...) the Great Bear, has been modified over the last millennia. Ancient astronomers, and with them the rest of humanity, imagined at that time that the universe was eternal and unchangeable. Astrophysicists today are convinced, in the large majority, that twenty billion years ago the universe went through a unique phase during which it was very hot and very dense. To this phenomenon they have given the name of the original or primordial explosion. As will be seen later, certain people believe that the universe will once again experience this great “heat”, which will be generated during future contractions. Others foresee an increasingly frozen and empty future for the universe. Between this glorious past and this uncertain future, the universe each day reveals more of its splendor thanks to the arrival of modern techniques of observation and the beginning of the conquest of space. The purpose of this article is to give a brief survey of the manner in which astronomers see the universe today; working from the position of man in the universe, his relation to it begins to be understood better. In the context of Badiou's philosophical mobilization from Platonism of the multiple towards the question of the Idea, in this article I will analyze the equivalence that Badiou proposes between an ‘awakening of History’ and the reactivation of the Idea of communism, through his historical diagnosis of the present as a time of revolts in the midst of a regressive capitalism towards nineteenth-century forms. However, the affirmation of such ‘awakening’ is problematic, since Badiou indicates that ‘History does not exist’ as (...) a transversal dictum in his work. Is there an internal contradiction in the author's philosophy? In this regard, I will show the correlation of the thesis of non-existence of History with the affirmation of post-eventual eternal truths. My hypothesis will be that the thesis of the non-existence of History can be elucidated in communication with the logical theory of the appearance of the object in a world: the law of history would not be the discontinuity of appearing but the continuity of a narrative determined by its processual character. That would support their link with political organization as 'discipline of the event': determine how to be faithful to the change of world in the world itself under the sign of the Idea. (shrink)

Paroles du Christ constitue le testament philosophique de Michel Henry. Non seulement parce qu’il s’agit de son dernier livre, mais aussi parce que quelque chose de nouveau et d’ancien affleure, comme une nouvelle perspective sur ce qu’il n’aura cessé d’appeler « la vie ». Après l’exploration systématique de la « vérité du christianisme » dans son opposition à la « vérité du monde », puis de la chair et de l’incarnation dans leur hétérogénéité à l’égard de l’objectivité du corps mondain, (...) Henry aurait ultimement tenté de rejouer la « duplicité de l’apparaître » du point de vue du langage, dans la distinction clairement assumée de la parole de la vie et de la parole du monde. Or il n’en est rien : non seulement parce que cette duplicité du langage traverse tous les textes consacrés par Henry au christianisme et n’a rien d’une problématique « régionale », mais aussi parce que, loin d’en être le point d’arrivée, il constitue sans doute son véritable point de départ. Trois rapports de la déontologie et du droit sont proposés pour saisir les relations, toujours ambiguës, entre ces deux champs normatifs. Ces rapports sont ici baptisés déontologies personnelle, professionnelle et publique. La première correspond à une morale privée, dont l’objectif est de garantir le bien commun, tandis que la deuxième renvoie à un corpus normatif spontané produit par une profession pour ses propres besoins, et la troisième consiste en une appropriation des deux autres par la puissance publique. La Phenomenologie, derniere section du Nouvel Organon (1764) de Jean-Henri Lambert, proposee ici dans sa traduction integrale, constitue une piece originale apportee au debat entre rationalisme et empirisme au XVIIIe siecle. Ce texte aborde le probleme de la critique de l'apparence en general, en ne recherchant pas seulement les criteres de l'apparence sensible, mais egalement ceux de l'apparence intellectuelle et morale, avec une consideration particuliere pour le domaine du probable. La verite apparente est au coeur de la phenomenologie definie (...) aussi comme une optique ou perspective transcendante. Né en 1921, Edgar Morin est un penseur connu, mais heureusement pas toujours reconnu dans les milieux scientifiques. Sa ronflante Méthode, qui établit que les effets d’une action échappent souvent à son auteur en provoquant des conséquences méconnues, comble surtout des médias trop heureux d’avoir sous la main un théoricien tout-terrain aux analyses grandiloquentes. D’ailleurs, la femme, l’entreprise, le football, la France, l’Europe, les pays de l’est, les pays arabes, le monde... sont, pour Edgar Morin, complexes. En quelques années, Edgar (...) Morin a ainsi réussi à amener la gauche à jeter Marx et ses analyses tranchées aux poubelles de l’Histoire. Car avec Edgar Morin, c’est beaucoup plus complexe et parfois même un tantinet ésotérique. Essentielle au droit, la question de la valeur n'a pourtant jamais été prise au sérieux. Et pour cause, dans le sillage des sciences empiriques, la pensée juridique moderne s'est accommodée d'une épistémologie d'après laquelle toute proposition juridique est réputée vraie ou fausse si elle décrit un état de chose « réel ». Conçu comme un ensemble de faits sociaux, objectivement identifiables, le droit s'appréhende comme une discipline promouvant des idéaux scientifiques, dont la neutralité axiologique de l'observateur. There are at least two ways to dehumanize the world. The world can be dehumanized from the top or from the bottom. From the bottom up would mean letting a barbaric situation develop which would reduce us to an animal state. From the top down would mean striving to achieve and impose a wisdom appropriate to the angels. Two ways of ruining the sense of what is human. Neither angel nor animal, you will recognize there the ‘in-between’ which is the (...) site of humanity and which it is tempting, when it is threatened, to assert, for in this dehumanizing process - whether this is meant from the top or the bottom - we are the losers in both scenarios. We lose what makes humanity itself, in other words moderation, the in-between, finiteness, chance, the propensity to communicate. (shrink)

In the second half of the 19 th century an “anthropologico-psychiatrical “ doctrine proposed a conception of mental illness which remained prevalent in Europe for a long time: the doctrine of degeneracy. Modern psychiatrical texts and works devoted to the history of ideas usually dismiss it with the slightly annoyed contempt of those who have long since given up such obsolete notions. The doctrine is most often referred back to a purely “hereditary” concept of alienation which psychoanalysis long ago proved (...) of no use. Now the most casual reading of the literature (whether medical or anthropological) shows that this interpretation is not only superficial but radically in error. The doctrine of degeneracy is not limited to this “hereditary” concept inasmuch as it assigns utmost importance to environmental factors such as social, educational and moral. Furthermore, the idea of heredity with which it is concerned has little to do with what genetical science today is studying under this term. Dissimilar heredity, during the second half of the 19th century, was the motivating force which was used to account for a factor that, paradoxically, transmits not likeness but unlikeness. Thus, a pathology o f heredity, or pathological heredity (in the sense that it is heredity itself which is “ill”), rather than hereditary pathology. (shrink)

Specialists in genetic psychology, and especially in child psychology, do not always suspect what diverse and fruitful relationships are possible between their own subject and other more general kinds of research, such as the theory of knowledge or epistemology. And the converse is even more true, if that is possible: that child psychology has for long been regarded as a collection of case histories of infants. The necessity has not always been recognised, even in the field of general psychology, of (...) considering all problems from the standpoint of development, and it is still true, in certain countries, that ‘child psychologists’ are a group apart, having no contact with the main currents of experimental psychology. Even less, as a rule, do students of the theory of knowledge suspect that, within reach as it were, in the field of psychogenetic experience, they can sometimes find solutions to the most general questions on the formation of ideas or on the analysis of intellectual activity. Yet they have been known to show inexhaustible patience when trying to reconstruct some unknown passage from the history of science for the sake of its epistemological significance. (shrink)

Those who study myth today consider with some predilection societies with no written language, such as are studied by ethnologists, wherein they hope to find myth of a more pure and more living nature than is to be found in civilizations where it has been treated in a “literary” form. To me, it does not appear at all obvious that the least elaborate should necessarily be the most pure and the most revealing. While, as they develop, societies may be invested (...) with structures of an increasing complexity and which are superimposed to such an extent that their organizational plan sometimes seems confused, at the same time the social functions are diversified and each of them becomes more simple. Is it in a society where the same character is at one and the same time king, priest and chief warrior that the distinctive characteristics of political authority, sacerdotal office and military activity are the most clearly illustrated, or is this clearer in a society where the different responsibilities are dissociated—even if, in their effective execution, it appears that complex relationships connect this authority, this office and this activity one with the other? In the same way, are not societies where there is coexistence and confrontation between clearly distinct conceptual thought and mythic thought, each aware of its own specificity, those that allow us best to understand the essence of the myth in its greatest purity?
