Background Prison creates philosophical needs due to the exceptionality of the situation. This study explores how philosophy can meet these needs by focusing on three aspects: critical thinking, personal relationships and the government of passions. It builds on similar interventions in several countries and is proposed as a research that bypasses some limitations of previous projects in prisons.Method Following the participation of 81 inmates in 22 philosophical sessions over six months, the results of both interventions were analyzed using mixed methods, (...) as well as a pretest posttest design with a control group. Specifically, Webster’s Self Assessed Wisdom Scale, a questionnaire and an interview with four participants were used. These methods were triangulated in order to obtain data from the various methodologies and to improve the validity and reliability of the results.Results It was demonstrated that the experimental group showed significant progress in relation to the categories “openness”, “humor” and “emotion regulation”. Participants also showed a progression in categories related to the project’s goals. These results allow for a description of the categories that explain in what sense philosophy can act in the context of imprisonment.Conclusions This study demonstrates, on the one hand, how philosophy workshops involve outcomes linked to cognitive, affective and relational aspects. Furthermore, it provides evidence to confirm previous studies and interventions that are more modest in their results and use less rigorous scientific methodologies. (shrink)

Se argumenta que el inmoralismo que confronta Platón en República I y II, lejos de presentar un solo desafío, tiene en realidad cuatro niveles de exigencia progresiva. Esta estructura escalonada del desafío inmoralista pone de manifiesto el hecho de que el desafío oficial, formulado por Adamanto en República II, corresponde a una peculiar interpretación que Platón hace del inmoralismo. Esto se debe a que los dos primeros niveles del desafío no introducen la novedosa posibilidad de suplantación de la realidad moral (...) por la reputación moral, característica de la interpretación platónica. Se argumenta también que la interpretación platónica acarrea ciertos problemas, y para los cuales se ofrecen soluciones tentativas. Entre estos problemas destaca la famosa objeción según la cual la noción de justicia como armonía síquica que Platón propone como respuesta, en República IV, parece cambiar de tema. Se argumenta, finalmente, que la estructura escalonada del desafío inmoralista permite hacer frente a esta objeción, pues sus últimos dos niveles ya determinan la forma que deberá tomar la respuesta ofrecida en República IV. This paper aims to analyze a specific way in which a scientific programme or area can, in Lakatosian terms, degenerate: namely, through a developmental process of intellectual inflation. Adopting a pluralist approach to the notion of scientific progress, we propose that the historical development of a particular scientific area can be analyzed as being intellectually inflationary during a bounded period of time if it has considerably increased its productive output (thus displaying productive progress) while the overall semantic or epistemic value (...) of those products have not improved in a significant fashion (thus lacking progress in a semantic or epistemic sense). Then, we apply this concept to thoroughly assess whether there are some intellectually inflationary patterns in the development of two areas of research: (i) information-theoretical evolutionary biology in 1961-2023, and (ii) ensemblist non-equilibrium statistical mechanics in 1938-2023. And finally, we argue that tracking and analyzing intellectually inflationary patterns in the history of sciences might contribute to vindicate a non-productivist picture of current scientific research. Monitoring health is one of the basic principles of Occupational Health and Safety. The main objective of this monitoring will be the detection of possible damage to health arising from work. They try to discover the effects that the inherent risks with the work may cause the worker, which will show, given the case, through an alteration of health or the state of organic and functional state, both physically and mentally. Regarding the monitoring of health, there are many and varied (...) issues to be raised concerning the right to personal privacy. Thus, notably, whether there was effective consensus, and whether, in particular, the object and the purpose of the medical examination meant a disregard of the statutory scheme, an excess or even a failure to comply with the terms of the Spanish Constitution. The limits imposed by the law makers to the productive unit will play a key role in identifying the content of the company obligation to monitor health, being in many cases guarantees of constitutional rights. Therefore, the methods of health monitoring and control of workers will always be carried out respecting the privacy and dignity of the worker as well as the confidentiality of all information related to their health. Beyond the classic view of an unfortunate, unpredictable coincidence that has nothing to do with human intervention, it is worth considering the relationship between science and political management, the response of solidarity and the debate on the definition of moral, political (...) and legal responsibility. We prove that, given a planar embedding of a graph in the sphere, the expansion of the graph structure by predicates encoding vertex separation by simple graph cycles is dp-minimal. This provides a rich natural class of examples of unstable, dp-minimal, and also monadically NIP theories. We also show how to infer the existence of a distal expansion of the theory of the Farey graph.

This paper analyses the right to repair (R2R) movement through the lens of radical democracy, elucidating the opportunities and limitations for advancing a democratic repair ethics against a backdrop of power imbalances and vested interests. We commence our analysis by exploring broader political-economic trends, demonstrating that Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly shifting towards asset-based repair strategies. In this landscape, hegemony is preserved not solely through deterrence tactics like planned obsolescence but also by conceding repairability while monopolizing repair and maintenance (...) services. We further argue that the R2R serves as an ‘empty signifier’, whose content is shaped by four counter-hegemonic frames used by the R2R movement: consumer advocacy, environmental sustainability, communitarian values, and creative tinkering. These frames, when viewed through Laclau and Mouffe’s theory of radical democracy, reveal different potentials for sustaining dissent and confronting OEMs' hegemony in the field of repair. Analysed in this way, an emerging business ethics of repair can be understood as driven by the politics of repair beyond repair. This notion foregrounds the centrality of non-violent conflict and antagonism for bringing radical democratic principles to repair debates, looking beyond narrow instrumentalist conversations, where repairability is treated as an apolitical arena solely defined by concerns for eco-efficiency and resource productivity. En este sentido, Birulés destaca dos elementos que marcaron la trayectoria intelectual de Arendt, el choque con la realidad del totalitarismo y el choque intelectual con sus maestros Karl Kaspers y Martin Heidegger. El acontecimiento político del totalitarismo lleva a la autora alemana y judía (...) a admitir que es necesaria una nueva comprensión de la política desvinculada de la filosofía política universalista y abstracta. The following text explores the event of love in the work of philosopher George Bataille. In this sense, the article is organized into a three central parts. The first one says relation with the metaphysical fullness that appears in the fusion of bodies in the instant of eroticism, and in the potential transcendence that from there is announced. A second moment, refers to love and its link with death. So, death is intuited where the passage for love itself is also (...) the way to a life that faces its limit. Thirdly, the figure of God is worked as a zone in which evil is also revealed and would then allow us, in the slit produced by love, foresee life beyond productivity, tending the classic opposition between good and evil. Finally, some cnsiderations about the impossible to close love as figuration and event in the writing of George Bataille will be left circulating. (shrink)

Espoleado el acoso de las potencias europeas y el fracaso de la liberalización emprendida por los Jóvenes Otomanos, Ziya Gökalp desarrolló un programa que buscaba reconciliar las visiones asimilista y refractaria con respecto al proyecto de occidentalización y modernización. Su pensamiento fue tomado tanto por los Jóvenes Turcos como por Atatürk y es fundamental para entender la Turquía del siglo XX. Separando los conceptos de cultura y religión de la idea de civilización, Gökalp propuso una interpretación esencialista de los primeros (...) y sincretista de la última. Para justificar una entrada de los turcos en la civilización occidental moderna sin renunciar a su cultura y religión, Gökalp presentó un relato que situaba al islam en el origen de la modernidad occidental surgida a partir de la Reforma. Al establecer un parentesco entre islam y protestantismo, Gökalp también pretendía disociar a los turcos de cualquier vínculo con la idea de Oriente. (shrink)

Hyppolite y Derrida coinciden en haber subrayado la importancia del lenguaje en la filosofía de Hegel, revelando las importantes implicaciones que la semiología del Espíritu subjetivo tendría en la construcción del idealismo. La dialéctica del signo desarrollada por Hegel en ese lugar revela hasta qué punto el lenguaje debe ser considerado como la puerta de entrada más metódica y natural hacia el interior del sistema, pero también como la puerta de salida más crítica y demoledora del mismo. La cuestión pasa (...) por decidir si dicha dialéctica constituye la condición de posibilidad de la mediación lógica y del cierre del sistema (Hyppolite), o si evidencia más bien su imposibilidad constitutiva y la necesidad de la deconstrucción (Derrida). El presente artículo se propone analizar el fundamento de ambas posiciones, así como su respectivo encaje en la filosofía de Hegel. (shrink)

Las democracias distan mucho de ser perfectas, como lo demuestra el hecho de que una parte de la población se encuentra en situación de exclusión y vulnerabilidad. Condición que, cuando menos, les impide participar de la vida pública y, por tanto, de contribuir a formar las políticas públicas que, en materia de derechos económicos, sociales y culturales, habrían de darse para paliar esos déficits en la protección de los derechos, que son también déficits de la propia democracia. Este contexto, obliga (...) a adoptar un enfoque basado en derechos humanos para realizar un diagnóstico de los principales problemas a los que se enfrentan las democracias en la actualidad y hacia el futuro. Razón por la cual ha de atenderse al tipo de ciudadanía que genere las menores dificultades para acceder a dichos derechos, y, en consecuencia, permita construir una estructura democrática y social evitando las causas de dominación. No bastaría esta reflexión si no se propusiesen cauces y campos de participación, en procesos, como los presupuestarios, ya que afectan e impactan en la protección y garantía de los derechos económicos, sociales y culturales, fundamento del disfrute de los demás derechos. The variety of devices and the socialization of consumption have decentralized access to online information which is not retrieved directly from media websites but through social networks. These same factors have driven user interest towards a wider range of both ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ topics. The aim of this article is to identify the consumption of news on these topics among digital users in Spain. The methodology used is based on an analysis of the survey conducted as part of the Digital (...) News Report 2017. Following this analysis, a conclusion has been reached that the most popular hard news stories in Spain are those related to the local and regional community itself, and to health and education, while the most popular soft news stories relate to lifestyles and arts and culture. The analysis has revealed that increased interest in news and greater topic specialization result in more diversified use of sources, formats, and complementary routes. (shrink)

In the literature, event metonymies have been used to explain how language users produce and interpret utterances in which certain events are understood in terms of their sub-events or the overall/complex events they are a part of. This paper attempts to discuss some pragmatic effects of event metonymies which, to the best of our knowledge, have not been explored to date.The first section deals with how certain expressions based on SUB-EVENT FOR EVENT metonymies can be considered synonymous for others in (...) real communicative terms. We, therefore, show how a sound theory of synonymy could not only benefit from the incorporation of referential metonymies but also from the inclusion of SUB-EVENT FOR EVENT metonymies. The second section focuses on how EVENT FOR SUB-EVENT mappings have proven useful to achieve certain pragmatic relevance and mitigation/euphemistic contextual effects which have never been described in the literature. In order to do so, we analyzed a collection of more than 60 expressions (obtained from a study with two native speakers of English) to observe how they can qualify as event metonymies. (shrink)

Cualquier estudio focalizado en la ontología propuesta por Leibniz debería prestar atención a conceptos claves, tales como esencias o posibilidades, existencia o actualización, contingencia, necesidad y libertad, entre otros. Al aproximarse a estas nociones, Leibniz reconoció abierta y explícitamente que los temas por los cuales él se interesaba habían sido tratados por Francisco Suárez, René Descartes y Baruch Spinoza. No obstante, se detecta una falta de coincidencia entre las posiciones adoptadas por estos pensadores y las tesis defendidas por Leibniz. Tal (...) diferencia resalta cuando dicho filósofo se propuso explicar, de un modo claro, distinto y conciso, la predisposición de las esencias para existir. Este deseo metafísico trasciende cualquier modalidad de reduccionismo lógico, y si se materializara, el resultado sería una actualización que Leibniz tiene a bien presentar, sin embargo, como contingente y limitada en la mayoría de los casos. El objetivo de este estudio se plantea, en términos de filosofía jurídica. la siguiente cuestión:¿Cómo debería reaccionar nuestro sistema judicial ante la presencia de otros sistemas regulativos obligatorios para grupos sociales distintos de la mayoría? Previamente el artículo erige un concepto viable de pluralismo cultural evitando los reduccionismos subyacentes: el reduccionismo que identifica pluralismo cultural con el impacto de corrientes migratorias en la Unión Europea; el reduccionismo que deriva del mantenimiento de la imposibilidad de existencia de derechos de grupo; el (...) reduccionismo que considera patológica la diversidad; el reduccionismo que equipara el pluralismo cultural con el pluralismo de valores; etc. Se llega así a la conclusión de que, en primer lugar, la cultura es conflicto, de juicio, y en segundo lugar, que la búsqueda de "una identidad cultural propia'' es un proyecto sin pretensiones. La parte final de este análisis explicita el problema en la Unión Europea y enfrenta las relaciones entre pluralismo y relativismo desde el punto de vista de la Teoría de los Derechos Humanos. This article analyzes in depth the general context of the teaching of the minority religions in the Spanish State. We focus on the specific case of andalusia (extensible to the Spanish case), and on two of the three religions that have signed Cooperation agreements with the Spanish State: the Evangelical and the Islamic religions. The legislative framework guarantees the parents the right to religious and moral education for their children, according to their beliefs, in public schools. Heredar una alteración en un gen de susceptibilidad al cáncer supone vivir con una probabilidad alta de desarrollar la enfermedad, con frecuencia más de una vez, y por lo general a una edad temprana. Y también convivir con otros familiares, padres, hijos, o hermanos, que pasan por idénticas circunstancias. Existen 200 entidades clínicas diferentes en las que se hereda la susceptibilidad al cáncer y todas ellas tienen un enorme impacto personal y familiar. Aunque en su mayoría son poco frecuentes, en (...) su conjunto representan una parte sustancial, en torno al 5%, del conjunto de cánceres, por lo que también su impacto poblacional resulta importante. La identificación de estas personas o familias y su derivación a unidades especializadas para que reciban un adecuado asesoramiento genético y posterior seguimiento clínico contribuye a aliviar a las familias, a la vez que evita costes sanitarios innecesarios restringiendo las medidas de seguimiento solo a aquellos que las necesitan. En este proceso el conocimiento de los genes responsables y el estudio genético de las familias en riesgo es un paso de importancia crucial. Las nuevas técnicas de secuenciación masiva del exoma han facilitado la búsqueda de nuevos genes responsables del cáncer familiar y de síndromes de susceptibilidad al cáncer que a corto plazo proporcionarán un espectro más correcto y completo de los mismos y a medio plazo permitirán una aplicación masiva en la práctica clínica. Propongo una explicación de la paradoja en términos del uso del pronombre personal �yo�. Más aún, recurro a un modelo del uso competente al que me referiré como modelo de la autorreferencia autoconsciente. A continuación, muestro que la explicación introducida es independiente de otras explicaciones recientes basadas en la naturaleza consciente de la (...) aserción y de la creencia. Pero, además, concluyo que está justificado pensar que ni la aserción ni la creencia son de naturaleza consciente. (shrink)

In order to design and implement electronic institutions that incorporate norms governing the behavior of the participants of those institutions, some crucial steps should be taken. The first problem is that human norms are (on purpose) specified on an abstract level. This ensures applicability of the norms over long periods of time in many different circumstances. However, for an electronic institution to function according to those norms, they should be concrete enough to be able to check them run time. A (...) second problem is that norms describe which behavior is desirable and permitted, but not how this is achieved in an institution. In the “real world" regulations often indicate procedures for implementing and enforcing the law. Likewise we should devise means to annotate the norms with practical aspects such as enforcement mechanisms, sanctions, etc. in order to get requirements for an institution that will enforce norms (by either constraining behavior within the norms or reacting to violation of the norms). The choice of which kind of mechanism is chosen is not a normative one, but usually based on criteria of efficiency and/or feasibility of the mechanism. In this paper we present our view on how to approach these problems and other related issues to be solved in order to develop e-institutions capable to operate in complex, highly regulated scenarios. Las metáforas se usan en sociología para poder explicar el imaginario de un tema como el secreto. Son capaces de poner de manifiesto la clase de realidad a la que es asociada comúnmente. Así, si el secreto es considerado un objeto, puede ser compartido, si es un lugar, puede ser donde escondamos algo, por el contrario, si pensamos que el secreto es un ser vivo, puede crecer sin que podamos hacer nada al respecto. La lógica metafórica se impone a menudo (...) sobre el sentido original. En este artículo usamos el análisis sociometafórico propuesto por Emmánuel Lizcano a una serie de discursos provenientes de entrevistas y grupos de discusión. (shrink)

The knowledge extraction from data with noise or outliers is a complex problem in the data mining area. Normally, it is not easy to eliminate those problematic instances. To obtain information from this type of data, robust classifiers are the best option to use. One of them is the application of bagging scheme on weak single classifiers. The Credal C4.5 model is a new classification tree procedure based on the classical C4.5 algorithm and imprecise probabilities. It represents a type of (...) the so-calledcredal trees. It has been proven that CC4.5 is more robust to noise than C4.5 method and even than other previous credal tree models. In this paper, the performance of the CC4.5 model in bagging schemes on noisy domains is shown. An experimental study on data sets with added noise is carried out in order to compare results where bagging schemes are applied on credal trees and C4.5 procedure. As a benchmark point, the known Random Forest classification method is also used. It will be shown that the bagging ensemble using pruned credal trees outperforms the successful bagging C4.5 and RF when data sets with medium-to-high noise level are classified. (shrink)
