These two lectures by Jacques Derrida, 'Foreigner Question: Come from Abroad' and 'Step of Hospitality/No Hospitality', derive from a series of seminars on 'hospitality' conducted by Derrida in Paris, January 1996. The book consists of two texts on facing pages. 'Invitation' by Anne Dufourmantelle appears on the left clarifying and inflecting Derrida's 'response' on the right. The interaction between them not only enacts the 'hospitality' under discussion, but preserves something of the rhythms of teaching. The book also characteristically combines (...) careful readings of canonical texts and philosophical topics with attention to the most salient events in the contemporary world, using 'hospitality' as a means of rethinking a range of political and ethical situations. For example, Antigone is revisited in light of the question of impossible mourning; the trial of Socrates is brought into conjunction with the televised funeral of François Mitterrand. (shrink)

Is there, today," asks Jacques Derrida, "another 'question of religion'?" Derrida's writings on religion situate and raise anew questions of tradition, faith, and sacredness and their relation to philosophy and political culture. He has amply testified to his growing up in an Algerian Jewish, French-speaking family, to the complex impact of a certain Christianity on his surroundings and himself, and to his being deeply affected by religious persecution. Ce livre est le fruit d'un travail mené par Jacques Arènes depuis plusieurs années sur les conditions psychiques du fait religieux dans le monde contemporain. La démarche de l'ouvrage réfute l'approche fonctionnaliste du fait religieux - étudié dans le contexte chrétien -, et cherche à mettre en tension mutuelle les discours laïcs, "scientifiques", concernant l'intériorité et ceux, plus anciens, issus du christianisme. L'auteur soutient l'hypothèse que la "laïcisation" du psychisme, induite par les nouvelles théories de l'intériorité, s'est traduite en (...) un travail psychique inédit, sur le plan individuel autant que collectif. L'intuition fondamentale de l'ouvrage est que la religion est aujourd'hui en relation forte avec le processus de subjectivation : dans un cadre historique où les institutions productrices de sens sont devenues incertaines, le sujet contemporain "utilise" ainsi la religion comme lieu de construction personnelle. L'ouvrage aborde les configurations, hautement individuelles, de la spiritualité d'aujourd'hui, et analyse la manière dont la quête de sens s'articule avec des démarches religieuses plus classiques. Le fait spirituel contemporain se saisit ainsi des méthodes et des démarches psychothérapiques pour les intégrer dans une problématique croyante. La confrontation des paradigmes utilisés par les théories religieuses de l'intériorité et par les sciences du psychisme conduit à une discussion approfondie sur les articulations du psychique et du spirituel. Cette tension entre les différents discours sur l'intériorité joue à l'intérieur d'une nouvelle donne anthropologique où le sujet coupable des temps freudiens, hanté par la faute, laisse progressivement la place au sujet blessé, peinant à porter sa destinée. Plus largement qu'une approche de la sphère religieuse, cette étude donne donc des éléments de compréhension sur le sujet contemporain en recherche de sens et en quête de soi. Un ouvrage du même auteur, à paraître prochainement aux Editions du Cerf, explorera plus précisément le positionnement du sujet croyant affronté au "trauma" d'une culture commune remettant en cause les racines de sa foi. We apply Benacerraf’s distinction between mathematical ontology and mathematical practice to examine contrasting interpretations of infinitesimal mathematics of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, in the work of Bos, Ferraro, Laugwitz, and others. We detect Weierstrass’s ghost behind some of the received historiography on Euler’s infinitesimal mathematics, as when Ferraro proposes to understand Euler in terms of a Weierstrassian notion of limit and Fraser declares classical analysis to be a “primary point of reference for understanding the eighteenth-century theories.” Meanwhile, scholars like (...) Bos and Laugwitz seek to explore Eulerian methodology, practice, and procedures in a way more faithful to Euler’s own. Euler’s use of infinite integers and the associated infinite products are analyzed in the context of his infinite product decomposition for the sine function. Euler’s principle of cancellation is compared to the Leibnizian transcendental law of homogeneity. The Leibnizian law of continuity similarly finds echoes in Euler. We argue that Ferraro’s assumption that Euler worked with a classical notion of quantity is symptomatic of a post-Weierstrassian placement of Euler in the Archimedean track for the development of analysis, as well as a blurring of the distinction between the dual tracks noted by Bos. Interpreting Euler in an Archimedean conceptual framework obscures important aspects of Euler’s work. Such a framework is profitably replaced by a syntactically more versatile modern infinitesimal framework that provides better proxies for his inferential moves. (shrink)

It is widely held that assertions are partially governed by an epistemic norm. But what is the epistemic condition set out in the norm? Is it knowledge, truth, belief, or something else? In this paper, I defend a view similar to that of Stanley (2008), according to which the relevant epistemic condition is epistemic certainty, where epistemic certainty (but not knowledge) is context-sensitive. I start by distinguishing epistemic certainty, subjective certainty, and knowledge. Then, I explain why it's much more plausible (...) to think that "certain", rather than "know", is context-sensitive. After that, I respond to an important worry raised by Pritchard, according to which the proposed view is too strong to accommodate our current practice of assertion. I then show that the main linguistic and conversational data advanced in the recent literature in favour of the knowledge condition are best explained by the certainty view. Finally, I offer two principled considerations: the certainty view is the only one compatible with three independently plausible claims and it fits very well with the common thought that knowledge does not entail certainty. A significant event in Derrida scholarship, this book marks the first publication of his long-lost philosophical text known only as “Geschlecht III.” The third, and arguably the most significant, piece in his four-part Geschlecht series, it fills a gap that has perplexed Derrida scholars. The series centers on Martin Heidegger and the enigmatic German word Geschlecht, which has several meanings pointing to race, sex, and lineage. Throughout the series, Derrida engages with Heidegger’s controversial oeuvre to tease out topics of sexual (...) difference, nationalism, race, and humanity. In Geschlecht III, he calls attention to Heidegger’s problematic nationalism, his work’s political and sexual themes, and his promise of salvation through the coming of the “One Geschlecht,” a sentiment that Derrida found concerningly close to the racial ideology of the Nazi party. Amid new revelations about Heidegger’s anti-Semitism and the contemporary context of nationalist resurgence, this third piece of the Geschlecht series is timelier and more necessary than ever. Beaucoup de surprises attendent le lecteur de ce livre. D'abord celle de l'existence d'une alliance objective entre les deux géants du siècle passé, ayant pu aller jusqu'au pacte tacite, mais constamment renouvelé entre la psychanalyse et la philosophie, anti-hegélienne, bien sûr. Ensuite, celle de la connaissance approfondie des textes de Freud, dès les années 20-30, que pouvait avoir Bataille, et bien avant que Lacan ne s'en empreigne, si l'on veut bien prendre enfin en compte ses écrits du tome II de (...) ses Œuvres Complètes, publiés seulement en 1970. Mais surtout, il devient évident que ce savoir qui est à légitimer, car il est celui d'un analysant, a permis à un écrivain portant ce nom de mener un triple combat : celui, évidemment contre la pusillanimité des plumes surréalistes et toutes les positions qu'il qualifie d'icariennes au regard de l'indécence du sexe ; donc, par là même, l'ouverture d'un autre front : celui d'une réhabilitation de Sade, qui sera présenté dans ces pages comme l'ancêtre le plus direct de Freud, celui-ci offrant enfin à sa " valeur d'usage " une " valeur d'échange " ; enfin la prise en compte effective, non seulement des dangers, mais de la réelle fascination que peut exercer le fascisme sur l'esprit rendu mélanco-lique par tous les progrès d'une science qui évacue la dimension du sujet, le privant de toute attache à sa terre et son histoire. Après la mort du Roi et la mort de Dieu, l'oeuvre relue de Bataille offre ainsi l'occasion de devoir surtout se convaincre de la mort de l'Un. Il importera de bannir l'univocité du sens et d'affirmer la prise en compte, chaque fois que s'énonce un désir, de la contradiction qu'il abrite en son sein entre l'excrétion qu'il permet et la réappropriation qu'il réclame. Peut-on établir un parallèle entre les sciences de la nature et les sciences humaines comme l'économie? La tentative est hardie et le résultat n'est pas garanti, car les unes et les autres n'appartiennent pas au même système de pensée. En outre, certains économistes ont voulu importer dans leur discipline des concepts nés dans le domaine des sciences dites "exactes", de façon à leur donner une connotation plus scientifique. Ce fut un échec. Malgré tout, les immenses progrès réalisés depuis le début (...) du XXe siècle, d'abord en physique, puis en biologie et enfin en neurosciences, ont eu un tel impact sur notre univers mental et sur notre manière de concevoir le monde que les sciences humaines ne pouvaient pas en sortir indemnes. Des notions aussi fondamentales que le temps, l'espace, la vie, la pensée, l'ordre, l'évolution, l'équilibre ne peuvent plus désormais être conçues comme elles l'étaient auparavant, et l'économie, de même que les autres sciences humaines, en a été profondément transformée. Il restera malgré tout une différence irréductible entre les sciences de la nature et les sciences humaines, car - Descartes l'avait déjà dit - la conscience de l'être humain, sa pensée, demeure rebelle à toute tentative de formalisation. In this essay Derrida reflects, for the first time at length, on secularization as a historical process. Whereas his earlier writings on religion focus on Jewish and Christian authors who blur the boundaries of religious belonging, this essay directly questions the categories of religion and secularization. Against this background, Derrida revisits the work of Kant, Voltaire, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, and he reflects on his own engagement with messianism, negative theology, and the khôra.

An examination of how debates originating in the Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns informed a broader exploration of the relation between past and present in various realms of eighteenth-century thought.
