Networks of lexical borrowing and lateral gene transfer in language and genome evolution.Johann-Mattis List, Shijulal Nelson-Sathi, Hans Geisler & William Martin - 2014 - Bioessays 36 (2):141-150.
Like biological species, languages change over time. As noted by Darwin, there are many parallels between language evolution and biological evolution. Insights into these parallels have also undergone change in the past 150 years. Just like genes, words change over time, and language evolution can be likened to genome evolution accordingly, but what kind of evolution? There are fundamental differences between eukaryotic and prokaryotic evolution. In the former, natural variation entails the gradual accumulation of minor mutations in alleles. In the (...)

    Dynamics of lying.Hans Ditmarsch - 2014 - Synthese 191 (5):745-777.
We propose a dynamic logic of lying, wherein a ‘lie that φ\varphi ’ is an action in the sense of dynamic modal logic, that is interpreted as a state transformer relative to the formula φ\varphi . The states that are being transformed are pointed Kripke models encoding the uncertainty of agents about their beliefs. Lies can be about factual propositions but also about modal formulas, such as the beliefs of other agents or the belief consequences of the lies of (...)

  11. Objectivity, value spheres, and "inherent laws": On some suggestive isomorphisms between Weber, Bourdieu, and Luhmann.Hans Henrik Bruun - 2008 - Philosophy of the Social Sciences 38 (1):97-120.
I give an account of Max Weber's views concerning the basis of the objectivity of the cultural sciences. In this connection, I offer a critical discussion of his distinction between different "value spheres," each with its own "intrinsic logic." I then consider parallels between Weber's "value spheres" and central elements of Bourdieu's field theory and Luhmann's systems theory, and try to show to what extent Bourdieu's and Luhmann's problems, and the solutions they suggest, can be seen as similar to Weber's. (...)

What is Intentionality and Who has Intentions in a Structuralist Model of Knowledge, Action and Thought.Hans Aebli - 1984 - Dialectica 38 (2-3):231-242.
SummaryThe philosophical core of a psychological theory of cognitive processes is developped and commented, focussing on the problem of intentionality, this term being taken in the normal and in the phenomenological sense. Actions, perceived processes, their states and results, operations and concepts are seen as related insofar as they all establish relations between elements, are generated by construction and can be objectivated. These acts and/or the objectives that control them, are intentional insofar as their structure is activated. Such activation is (...)

Schulenburg's Leibniz als Sprachforscher, with some Observations on Leibniz and the Study of Language.Hans Aarsleff - 1975 - Studia Leibnitiana 7 (1):122 - 134.
This book is the best and most comprehensive treatment we have of Leibniz' study of natural languages, on the same high level of scholarship, knowledge, and insight as the essay Sigrid von der Schulenburg published in 1937. With its rich detail and source references, it is indispensable both to Leibniz scholars and to students of the history of the study of language. The editor's careful indices make it possible to use the book also as a work of reference. The reviewer (...)

Anschauung und Anschaulichkeit: Visualisierung im Wahrnehmen, Lesen und Denken.Hans Adler & Sabine Gross (eds.) - 2016 - Paderborn: Wilhelm Fink.

    Pain: Reflections of a Philosopher.Hans-Georg Gadamer & Alexander Crist - 2020 - Journal of Continental Philosophy 1 (1):63-75.
In “Pain,” Hans-Georg Gadamer offers several reflections on the experience of pain and its importance for both modern medicine and hermeneutic thought. Having already celebrated his 100th birthday at the time of this lecture, Gadamer speaks of his own experience with polio and the pains of old age, and the influence that his friend and physician, Paul Vogler, had on his approach to the treatment of pain. In the year 2000, Gadamer is concerned with the dominance of technology and (...)

This volume answers the question: Why do we believe what we believe? It examines current research on the concept of beliefs, and the development in our understanding of the process of believing. It takes into account empirical findings in the field of neuroscience regarding the processes that underlie beliefs, and discusses the notion that beyond the interactive exploratory analysis of sensory information from the complex outside world, humans engage in an evaluative analysis by which they attribute personal meaning and relevance (...)

This paper tries to shed some light on the paradox that people cling to national ideologies at just the time when nations are counting less and less in social, cultural, economic and political affairs, and when transnational corporations and international organizations increasingly determine the framework of things. Many nations still rigidly think of themselves as independent and sovereign, accountable to no one but themselves, even when our global interdependence can no longer be ignored or denied. Ethnic cleansing and crimes against (...)
