La Généalogie de la Morale appartient aux oeuvres de la maturité de Friedrich Nietzsche, puisqu'elle a été publiée en 1887, après Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra. Dans cet essai, le penseur allemand traite de philosophie morale, cherchant à retracer l'origine de nos conceptions morales: selon lui, les valeurs prennent leur source dans la morale chrétienne, qu'il tient pour une morale du ressentiment, une morale d'esclave, dont il faut se libérer: la morale du surhomme sera ainsi une morale de la libération. Malgré la popularité du concept d’assimilation en sciences sociales, on connaît finalement peu de chose sur son origine intellectuelle. Cet article vise à faire la généalogie de ce concept dans une perspective franco-britannique. Sa traduction du latin vers le français et l’anglais conserve la signification de « similitude » mais le concept se sécularise, d’une part, à travers le langage des sciences naturelles dont l’influence favorise une réappropriation pour décrire les relations humaines et, d’autre part, le discours historique anglais et (...) le discours politique colonial français. Dans le contexte britannique, l’assimilation devient une qualité collective attribuée à tout un peuple, puis utilisée en naturalisant les différences entre les peuples pour les rendre irréductibles et enfin s’enrichit d’une acception administrative. En France, la politisation du concept d’assimilation dans les discours et réglementations coloniaux provoque un bouleversement sémantique qui l’associe au concept d’égalité. (shrink)

In his effort to explain the hostility between the two Spartan kings Demaratus and Kleomenes, which dated back to their ancestors, Herodotus makes a digression concer­ning their genealogy, their privileges and the genealogy of Demaratus. From this digression, an exploitation of the genealogy emerges both on the political and the narrative level. On the first level, it is implied that Demaratus has a hereditary right to the throne, which is greater than that of Kleomenes, because of his relationship with the (...) supernatural element. This supernatural element appears in his genealogy a) through the intervention of Helen, a fact which brought about the love of Ariston, king of Sparta, for the mother of Demaratus; b) through a double paternity, since she ignored the fact that he was the offspring of either Ariston, a mortal, or of the hero Astrabakus. In this way, in the figure of Demaratus, the two capacities, the religious and the political, converge. His enemies exploit the ambiguity of this genealogy in order to achieve his dethronement. On the narrative level, Herodotus exploits the genealogy of Demaratus in order to present him as a victim of an impious conspiracy. Therefore, he justifies him politically, while, morally he has already been justified by tisis for which, according to Herodotus, his adversaries paid by their atrocious death.Afin d’expliquer l’hostilité des deux rois de Sparte Démarate et Cléomène, remontant à leurs ancêtres, Hérodote fait une digression concernant leur généalogie, leurs privilèges ainsi que la généalogie de Démarate. Cette digression permet l’exploitation de la généalogie tant sur le plan politique que sur le plan narratif. Au premier plan apparaît d’une manière sous-jacente l’idée que Démarate possède un droit héréditaire sur le trône supérieur à celui de Cléomène, à cause de son rapport aux éléments surnaturels présents dans sa généalogie : a) à travers l’intervention d’Hélène, qui a provoqué l’amour d’Ariston, roi de Sparte, pour la mère de Démarate; b) à travers une double paternité, parce qu’elle ignorait s’il était fils d’Ariston, un mortel, ou du héros Astrabakos. Ainsi, en la personne de Démarate convergent les deux pouvoirs, religieux et politique. L’ambiguïté de cette généa­logie a été exploitée par ses ennemis afin d’obtenir son expulsion. Sur le plan narratif, Hérodote exploite la généalogie de Démarate pour le présenter comme une victime d’une intrigue impie. L’historien justifie l’action de Démarate sur le plan politique, tandis que sur le plan moral celle-ci a été déjà justifiée par leτίσιςque, selon Hérodote, ses adversaires ont payé par leur mort atroce. Si le concept husserlien de passivité a fasciné toute une génération de philosophes (Merleau-Ponty, Landgrebe, Levinas, Henry), il a rarement fait l'objet d'une étude qui adopte la perspective du fondateur de la phénoménologie. Sa célébrité a comme masqué sa spécificité, créant une sorte de doctrine officielle de la passivité qui a, en fin de compte, peu de choses à voir avec la pensée et les intentions de Husserl. En effet, là où les phénoménologues contemporains voient dans la passivité la zone (...) d'ombre où le programme d'une phénoménologie transcendantale et subjective s'effondrerait, Husserl considère, de son côté, qu'elle appartient sans reste à la sphère de la constitution et qu'elle consolide par conséquent son transcendantalisme. Loin d'être un domaine de sens irréductible à la rationalité, elle représente même le fondement des opérations de la pensée catégoriale. C'est en son sein que doivent être cherchées les « sources » des formes supérieures de la logique. Toute passive et préconsciente qu'elle soit, l'expérience antéprédicative appartient sans reste pour Husserl au sujet transcendantal et ne le destitue donc pas de sa position centrale et primordiale. Ce travail s'attache ainsi à suivre cette genèse du catégorial à partir de l'expérience passive et à montrer qu'elle entre dans le projet général, qui a été toujours celui de Husserl, d'asseoir la phénoménologie transcendantale sur le socle originaire de l'expérience du monde. Článek představuje renesanční pohled na původ vědění. Renesanční doba totiž oživila starou představu pocházející z antiky, že pravda byla zjevena na počátku lidských dějin bohem či bohy. Tato idea dávné moudrosti (prisca sap.) přetrvávala během středověku, ale novou brizanci získala po koncilu ve Ferraře a Florencii. Tam se totiž objevil byzantský filosof Pléthón, který se domníval, že nejstarším mudrcem byl Zoroaster. Další genealogie mudrců najdeme u největších představitelů renesančního platonismu – M. Ficina a Pica della Mirandola. Ficino preferoval nejdříve (...) posloupnost, v níž byl prvním Hermés, pak se přiklonil k variantě, kde byl první Zoroaster. Podobné úvahy se objevují i u Pica a dalších autorů. Vždy jde ale o to, že současný stav společnosti a vědění je špatný a pro pravou pravdu je nutné obrátit se do dávné minulosti lidského rodu. This book shows that it is neither eternal nor universally asked; rather, it is a question linked to a specific culture (the West), and it has a (...) history. This is why the author intends to draw up its genealogy.In order to draw up a genealogy of the concept of freedom, we must leave aside the standard theoretical framework that assumes freedom as a given. Rather, we should ask: Does [End Page 152] freedom exist? What is its nature? Should it be described as the absence of compulsion or as the power of choice? We must also be wary of any systematic approach to these questions, such as those that have opposed partisans of freedom to determinists or intellectualists to voluntarists throughout the ages. If we want to draw up a genealogy of freedom, we should rather think about the theoretical conditions that made possible the birth and the development of this theoretical "artifact," as Boulnois calls it (23). Contemporary discussions about freedom tend to debate its nature without wondering why such a concept was forged in the first place. By contrast, Boulnois takes a step back and tries to discover the nature of freedom by turning to the moment of its birth.Boulnois has adopted a genealogical approach in his previous books. He used it in his Être et représentation, whose subtitle is une généalogie de la métaphysique moderne à l'époque de Duns Scot (Paris: PUF, 1999). He also mentioned it in the title of a collection of edited essays, where he preferred to talk of "genealogies" in the plural in order to accommodate the diversity of approaches adopted by the authors of the contributions to that volume (Olivier Boulnois, ed., Généalogies du sujet: de saint Anselme à Malebranche [Paris: Vrin, 2007]). In his new book, Boulnois explains his choice of the genealogical method as an attempt to give a history of freedom that might reconcile the so-called continental and analytic approaches (18). Instead of giving a simple description of theories of freedom, by his genealogical method Boulnois intends to show how the Western approach to freedom has resulted in an aporia—the very aporia that Kant diagnosed as an insoluble problem in his Critique of Pure Reason. Boulnois's genealogy should be distinguished from the so-called archeology as heralded by the French scholar of the Middle Ages Alain de Libera. Although both the genealogical and the archeological methods originate in the writings of Michel Foucault, and as such are undeniably connected to each other, the genealogical enterprise is intended to "deconstruct" past philosophers' claims not in order to leave them behind and reject them (as the archeological method intends to do), but rather to become fully aware of those philosophers' theoretical choices and commitments (see Boulnois, Être et representation, 16). Genealogy is thus supposed to "liberate" our thought by making apparent the framework in which we think.To deconstruct the problem of freedom, Boulnois proceeds in four main steps. First, he shows how the problem of freedom is constructed by examining a cluster of related concepts (free will, will, power, and action) and discovering the aporia of free will, which appears to be both indubitable and impossible to conceptualize. Second, Boulnois turns to Aristotle's ethics and theory of action, which conceives of human choices without appealing to the idea of freedom. Third, he considers the "invention of freedom," or better of free will (in Latin, liberum arbitrium voluntatis), by highlighting three main moments: the Stoics' assent to the order of the world; Alexander of Aphrodisias's cogitations, which make room for free will in an Aristotelian framework, even without ever naming it; and finally, Augustine's reorganization of ethics around the very concept of free will. Cet article se propose d’étudier ces débats, en retraçant la manière dont l’autorité familiale a été constituée comme forme de pouvoir et objet de savoir, entre la fin du xviii e siècle et le début du xix e siècle français. L’analyse des discours (...) juridiques, pédagogiques et politiques sur l’autorité familiale permet de retracer l’émergence d’une forme inédite de gouvernementalité, dont la spécificité ne peut être appréhendée qu’à la condition de passer d’une approche généalogique à une perspective sociohistorique sur les rapports entre les groupes qui s’affrontent au sein de la société. À la lumière de ce constat, le problème du rapport entre la méthode de la « pratique historico-philosophique » et la méthode de l’enquête sociohistorique peut être réexaminé. (shrink)

This article takes the scientific study of conspiracy theories itself as an object of inquiry. It looks at the three main frameworks to look at conspiracy theories: a psychological, epistemological and a sociological approach. These different approaches exist somewhat separately and often do not get along. The central claim that follows from a genealogy of these research programs is that the conflicts between these different approaches should be understood not merely as disagreements about how the world works, but as a (...) fundamental disagreement about the underlying diagnosis of what is at stake in conspiracy theories. In other words, the conflicts stem in part from political differences, not merely empirical ones. The purpose of this article is to bring these different diagnoses back into dialogue with each other and to point out that despite their differences, they also have something in common: a concern about the state of contemporary democratic institutions. Depending on which project one subscribes to, conspiracy thinking will appear either as the cause or the solution of these democratic concerns. (shrink)

The article focuses on the Philosophy of Freedom of the Swiss philosopher Charles Secrétan (1815-1895) and on the attempt to reconcile freedom as the fundamental experience for the human being with the alleged necessitarianism that would result from the positive sciences. The notion of “fall” as it is found in the Christian tradition allows Secrétan to rediscover an original dimension from which we can conceive the laws of nature as contingent. It is space and time that impose their constraints and (...) lead to the mismatch between the different faculties (sensitivity, imagination, intelligence, will) that is constitutive for the human experience and that prevents us from “being at any moment the whole of ourselves”. A peculiarity of Secrétan’s conception of space is that he does not see it as a condition for the numerical plurality of human beings. (shrink)

En 1951, l’Europe politique naît communautaire. Pendant une dizaine d’années, de nombreux projets d’associations sont évoqués, qui partagent tous la même inclination pour l’idée communautaire. Citons pêle-mêle la Communauté européenne du charbon et de l’acier, la Communauté européenne de défense, la Communauté politique européenne, la Communauté économique européenne, et la Politique agricole commune. Si l’Union européenne succède à l’ancienne Communauté au début des années 1990, il convient d’interroger les motifs qui ont mené à cette rupture sémantique. L’une des approches explicatives (...) consiste à retracer la pré-histoire du concept de communauté afin de mesurer et de caractériser la manière dont celui-ci a pesé sur le processus d’intégration européenne. Cette pré-histoire correspond au moment « français » de la construction européenne et apparaît au travers de la relecture, par les intellectuels « non-conformistes » des années 1930, des « néo-romantiques » allemands. À partir de cette approche généalogique, nous aborderons les enjeux spécifiques que pose une approche communautaire de l’Europe, au travers notamment de son rapport à la démocratie. (shrink)

The first aim of the article is to present the lineage of party organizations integrating several "classical" approaches. Therefore a second aim is to set up a structural model able to catch the evolution of any typeof modern party organization.One assumes that Party Structure is an invariable element which subsumes several organizational translations. Same are protopartisan translations : leagues, armed and unarmed f actions, parliamentary groups. Some are partisan translations : modern party organizations. Jetzt sah sich Nietzsche im Zenit seiner Schaffenskraft, und die Neue Ausgabe sollte den Mitte 1885 gefaßten Plan vorantreiben, »eine große Schul-Tätigkeit als Philosoph auszuüben […]. The writing of customs and their reform in France in the second half of Sixteenth century generate numerous comments by the jurists, concerning their content as well as their origin, their characteristics and their relations with other sources of law. This essay presents some definitions of the coutume and the comments that some of the greatest French jurists of the Sixteenth century, and especially Montaigne, propose of the customs and their normativity. It also tries to highlight the difficulties involved in (...) solving a number of problems. The latter concern in particular the relationship of customs with time, with the laws issued by the King, with local communities and with the territory, during the rise of a precise spatial perspective and a specific temporality of the modern theory based on the function of law. In this paper the author focuses on the reflections of Friedrich Schlegel on the concept of history. The works considered here range from 1798 to 1805 and include Schlegel’s essays, lessons, personal notes and fragments. In those years the reflections on the plurality of stories and genealogies against the singularity of History are central. “History” will emerge as a regulatory ideal of the narrative, but also of praxis. This paper will also show the limits of Koselleck’s analysis of Schlegel’s thought.

The interpretation of Christian religion and theology is a very important aspect of Michel Foucault's work. But in theology Foucault is predominantly noticed as the thinker of the “death of the subject”, less as an thoughtful and original interpreter of Christianity. This essay presents an outline of Foucault's statements on Christianity from his early works to his later books and lectures. It especially focuses on his interpretation of the Reformation and Protestantism. The central thesis is, that reading these texts it (...) becomes clear, that Foucault's interest is not the “death” of the subject, but the concept of the individual and its conduct of life in the modern world. Furthermore it is shown, that Reformation and Protestantism are key factors in this concept. (shrink)
