It is known that C. G. J. Jacobi wrote his first two letters to E. E. Kummer in the year 1834. Thanks to a find in the archive of the Mittag-Leffler Institute there is now the missing link , Kummer’s reply letter to Jacobi’s first letter. This letter seems to be the earliest one from Kummer still in existence (at least to a mathematician). Kummer tells in his letter about his situation as a teacher in Liegnitz, gives further a version (...) of his later paper on the summation of slowly convergent series and discusses Euler’s summation formula in connection with the practice of its use in numerical calculations. The article contains the complete texts of the three letters (up to those parts in Kummer’s letter identically contained in his published article) together with a commentary on their contents. Anthropological Theory for the Twenty-First Century presents a critical approach to the study of anthropological theory for the next generation of aspiring anthropologists. This equation was set up by Mr. Allen in the Classical Review XV. 8–9 , and remained, as far as I know, for over twenty years without effect. I thought, therefore, when writing my External Evidence for Interpolation in Homer that the article had provided its own corrective and needed no criticism. About the same time, however, Mr. Allen in his Homer: The Origins and the Transmission , 2352, reiterated his opinion; and later still Mr. Sheppard, ib. XLI. 127–9 , (...) shows that he has been impressed by it. Under these circumstances, and because a good deal depends upon the interpretation of the word, a brief discussion now seems desirable. The paper presents an analysis of the influence of welfare state regimes on national models of corporate social responsibility. The paper takes its point of departure in Esping-Andersen’s three models of welfare state regimes. These models are extended to provide hypotheses on the role of corporate social responsibility in the provision of welfare goods. The paper exemplifies its points by providing an analysis of the Danish model of CSR, and drawing comparisons to other European models and the American model.

Die pantheistischen Schwärmer von Friedrichshagen, weil sie ein Entwicklungsgesetz am Werk zu sehen glauben, das ganz folgerichtig zu immer Besserem, Edlerem, Vollkommnerem, Vergeistigterem führen müsse. Reciprocity is a decisive behavioural rule resulting in successful co-operation or deterrence. In this paper, a dynamic model is proposed, where reciprocity is described by changes in altruistic (or malevolent) ties. Multiple steady states may exist in one of which there may be general cooperation (solidarity) and the other being one of universal malice (war of each individual against all other individuals). We apply our theory to a number of examples, illustrating that the agents’ initial preferences determine whether a steady (...) state of solidarity, selfishness or malice will emerge. (shrink)
