This study addresses race and ethnic relations from the standpoint of Schutzian phenomenological social psychology. It shows how this approach, by focusing on intersubjectivity and the construction of self and identity, both yields an intimate look at race and reveals the critical thrust, hence, political relevance, of phenomenology.

Anastácia representa o silenciamento das mulheres negras (...) do século XIX, enquanto Lina demanda no reality show televisivo outras formas para o tratamento de mulheres transgênero e travestis. O artigo propõe, portanto, uma reflexão sobre pistas de um tensionamento midiático pela descolonização, a partir da aproximação entre figuras que têm suas histórias atravessadas por racismo, misoginia e LGBTQIA+fobia. This book is the outcome of the Workshop Ciências Humanas, held in the city of São Pedro (SP), by thePROPe (Pró-Reitoria de Pesquisa da Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" - Unesp), with the aim of comprising ebooks for the collection "Desafios Contemporâneos". This article investigates whether acts of plagiarism are predictable. Through a deductive, quantitative method, this study examines 517 students and their motivation and intention to plagiarize. More specifically, this study uses an ethical theoretical framework called the Theory of Reasoned Action and Planned Behavior to proffer five hypotheses about cognitive, relational, and social processing relevant to ethical decision making. Data results indicate that although most respondents reported that plagiarism was wrong, students with strong intentions to plagiarize had a more positive (...) attitude toward plagiarizing, believed that it was important that family and friends think plagiarizing is acceptable, and perceived that plagiarizing would be an easy task. However, participants in the current study with less intention to plagiarize hold negative views about plagiarism, do not believe that plagiarism is acceptable to family, friends or peers, and perceive that the act of plagiarizing would prove difficult. Based on these findings, this study considers implications important for faculty, librarians, and student support staff in preventing plagiarism through collaborations and outreach programming. Academic integrity has become a significant point of concern in the post-secondary landscape, and many institutions are now exploring ways on how to implement academic integrity training for students. This paper delineates the development of an Academic Integrity E-Learning (AIE-L) tutorial at MacEwan University, Canada. In its first incarnation, the AIE-L tutorial was intended as an education tool for students who had been found to violate the University’s Academic Integrity Policy. However, in a discourse of the academic integrity process, the (...) University reimagined it from only emphasising the increased understanding and strengthened commitment of students found to have committed academic misconduct to a proactive focus with education for all students. The purpose of the present paper is three-fold: first, describe the development of the AIE-L tutorial as an experiential case study; second, improve the content of the AIE-L tutorial through students’ quantitative and qualitative feedback; third, calibrate the pre and post-test questions for content validity for a forthcoming large-scale measurement of the AIE-L tutorial effectiveness. [First paragraph] According to a widely accepted opinion, the most typical characteristic and even the constitutive element of science is measurement, i.e., those processes of measuring upon which science is based. For a long time this has caused a general orientation of disciplines seeking to call themselves "science"; toward a certain form of quantification; in order to achieve the prestigious title of "science"; some form of measurement, of whatever kind, had to be introduced into the area of study.

These are some of the topics discussed in this book, both theoretically and with reference to concrete cases.

Embora a expressão ‘neologismo’ nos dê a impressão de uma palavra exótica, que causa uma certa estranheza ao usuário da língua, ela, na verdade, refere-se a qualquer palavra recém-criada que entra em uso num idioma. Toda língua, em seu estágio inicial, é simples, rudimentar e refere-se, principalmente, ao concreto. Conforme a sociedade vai-se aprimorando e tornando-se complexa, também a língua usada por essa sociedade vai-se aprimorando, refinando, atendendo às necessidades de seus falantes. Com o latim não foi diferente. Para se (...) transformar numa língua capaz de expressar a grandeza da civilização romana, o latim teve que, dentre outros processos, ampliar seu léxico, criando novas palavras. E é esse processo de produtividade lexical que este trabalho se propõe a observar, ainda que superficialmente. (shrink)

No Órganon Aristóteles descreve alguns esquemas dedutivos nos quais a presença de inconsistências não acarreta a trivialização da teoria lógica envolvida. Esta tese é corroborada por três diferentes situações teóricas estudadas por ele, as quais são apresentadas neste trabalho. Analizamos o esquema de inferência utilizado por Aristóteles no Protrepticus e o método de demonstração indireta para os silogismos categóricos. Ambos os métodos exemplificam como Aristóteles emprega estratégias de redução ao absurdo logicamente clássicas. Na sequência, discutimos os silogismos válidos a partir (...) de premissas opostas (contrárias e contraditórias) estudadas pelo Estagirita no Analytica Priora (B15). De acordo com o autor, os seguintes silogismos são válidos a partir de premissas opostas, nos quais letras latinas minúsculas denotam termos como sujeito e predicado, enquanto que letras latinas maiúsculas denotam proposições categóricas tal como na notação tradicional: (i) na segunda figura, Eba,Aba ` Eaa (Cesare), Aba, Eba ` Eaa (Camestres), Eba, I ba ` Oaa (Festino), e Aba,Oba ` Oaa (Baroco); (ii) na terceira, Eab,Aab ` Oaa (Felapton), Oab,Aab ` Oaa (Bocardo) e Eab, Iab ` Oaa (Ferison). Por fim, discutimos a passagem do Analytica Posteriora (A11) no qual Aristóteles enuncia que o Princípio de Não-Contradição não é, em geral, pressuposto de toda demonstração (silogismo científico), mas apenas daquelas nas quais a conclusão deve ser provada a partir do Princípio; o Estagirita enuncia que se um silogismo da primeira figura tiver o termo maior consistente, os outros termos da demonstração podem ser separadamente inconsistentes. Estes resultados permitem-nos propor uma interpretação de sua teoria dedutiva como uma teoria paraconsistente lato sensu. Primeiramente, efetuamos uma análise hermenêutica, avaliando seu significado lógico e a correlação desses resultados com outros aspectos da filosofia de Aristóteles. Em segundo lugar, consignamos uma interpretação dos silogismos aristotélicos a partir de premissas opostas à luz dos antilogismos propostos por Christine Ladd-Franklin em 1883, e da demonstração aristotélica com termos inconsistentes nas lógicas paraconsistentes Cn, 1 n !, introduzidas por da Costa em 1963. O trabalho é uma determinação natural do homem, porque tem como finalidade a transformação da natureza segundo as necessidades basilares dos próprios homens. Os capitalistas alteraram esta ordem específica e passaram a ver na ação trabalhista apenas uma forma de valorização exacerbada da mercadoria. Na obra "O Capital", Karl Marx representa essa transição a partir de uma tríade: mercadoria, trabalho e valor. Para ele, estes elementos devem ser analisados sob dois aspectos: o valor de uso (estágio natural do valor da (...) mercadoria) e o valor de troca (estágio modificado do valor da mercadoria). Na ordem natural, a mercadoria é trocada em equivalência ao tempo de trabalho socialmente necessário para a sua produção (valor). Na esfera capitalista, a mercadoria foge à ordem natural e se torna em fonte de exploração dos trabalhadores. Desse modo, o objetivo deste artigo é mostrar como a teoria natural do trabalho é modificada em um instrumento proeminente de exploração (mais-valia). A competição entre os capitalistas, para dominar a mais-valia, leva à formação de uma taxa generalizada de lucro e, portanto, a uma modificação da natureza da mercadoria, trabalho e valor. (shrink)

The first part of this book is of an epistemological nature and develops an original theory of scientific objectivity, understood in a weak sense (as intersubjective agreement among the specialists) and a strong sense (as having precise concrete referents). In both cases it relies upon the adoption of operational criteria designed within the particular perspective under which any single science considers reality. The "object" so attained has a proper ontological status, dependent on the specific character of the criteria of reference (...) (regional ontologies). This justifies a form of scientific realism. Such perspectives are also the result of a complex cultural-historical situation. The awareness of such a "historical determinacy" of science justifies including in the philosophy of science the problems of ethics of science, relations of science with metaphysics, and social dimensions of science that overstep the traditional restriction of the philosophy of science to an epistemology of science. It is to this "context" that the second part of the book is devoted. (shrink)

Este trabalho analisa a polêmica "teoria das quatro fases da filosofia", tal como foi publicada por Franz Brentano em 1895, com o propósito de apresentar o papel das crises filosóficas no interior do movimento histórico-filosófico ocidental. Descrevemos, primeiramente, o modo como Brentano assume a clássica divisão da história em três períodos (antigo, medieval e moderno), para subdividir cada um desses períodos em quatro movimentos filosóficos distintos (movimento filosófico de interesse puro, movimento filosófico de interesse prático, movimento filosófico cético e movimento (...) filosófico místico). Nossa análise explicitará que, segundo a tese principal ali defendida por Brentano, (a) os movimentos filosóficos se sucedem no interior de cada período histórico em função de uma crise intrínseca ao próprio processo histórico da filosofia e (b) o que define a crise filosófica é o modo como cada um dos movimentos filosóficos, constituintes da segunda, terceira e quarta fases, diferem do movimento filosófico constituinte da primeira fase. Como conclusão da nossa análise, defenderemos que os pressupostos históricos filosóficos brentanianos da sua "4ª tese de Habilitação" são os critérios fundamentais da filosofia ascendente encontrados nos métodos de Aristóteles, Tomas de Aquino, Bacon e Descartes. Em outras palavras, sustentaremos que se tratava, para Brentano, de reconhecer em tais métodos filosóficos o seu poder de sustentar aquele tipo de percepção capaz de garantir evidência ao conhecimento, pois esse seria o modo de evitar que a filosofia (i) substituísse seu interesse teórico pelo interesse prático, (ii) se entregasse ao ceticismo, ou ainda, (iii) sucumbisse ao misticismo. Como base textual, eu analiso a comunicação de Brentano apresentada à comunidade filosófica de Viena, em março de 1889, intitulada Sobre o conceito de verdade (Über den Begriff der Wahrheit), e faço uma exposição sistemática da análise de Brentano acerca dos problemas que envolvem a interpretação do conceito aristotélico de verdade como correspondência. Minha interpretação (...) explicita o modo como Brentano reinterpretou o conceito aristotélico de verdade como correspondência, no contexto da estrutura conceitual de sua psicologia descritiva. Logic has attained in our century a development incomparably greater than in any past age of its long history, and this has led to such an enrichment and proliferation of its aspects, that the problem of some kind of unified recom prehension of this discipline seems nowadays unavoidable. This splitting into several subdomains is the natural consequence of the fact that Logic has intended to adopt in our century the status of a science. This always implies that the general optics, (...) under which a certain set of problems used to be con sidered, breaks into a lot of specialized sectors of inquiry, each of them being characterized by the introduction of specific viewpoints and of technical tools of its own. The first impression, that often accompanies the creation of one of such specialized branches in a diSCipline, is that one has succeeded in isolating the 'scientific core' of it, by restricting the somehow vague and redundant generality of its original 'philosophical' configuration. But, after a while, it appears that some of the discarded aspects are indeed important and a new specialized domain of investigation is created to explore them. By follOwing this procedure, one finally finds himself confronted with such a variety of independent fields of research, that one wonders whether the fact of labelling them under a common denomination be nothing but the contingent effect of a pure historical tradition. Spinoza no ha elaborado una doctrina sistemática sobre la tolerancia, sin embargo resulta manifiesta su preocupación por los efectos que tienen para el estado moderno tanto su carencia como una excesiva permisividad en este asunto. En el Tratado Teológico-político el filósofo censura la conducta pertinaz de los fariseos por su falta de tolerancia, al mismo tiempo que contempla con recelo la complacencia de algunos políticos holandeses que, en el presente, hacen gala de una tolerancia hipertrofiada. En el presente artículo consideraremos (...) la posición de Spinoza ante estas dos tradiciones, y su propuesta a favor de delimitar con claridad las fronteras de la tolerancia en el estado con el fin de proteger el imperium de la república y la libertad del ciudadano. In this paper, we evaluate Button’s claim that knot is a nasty connective. Knot’s nastiness is due to the fact that, when one extends the set \ with knot, the connective provides counterexamples to a number of classically valid operational rules in a sequent calculus proof system. We show that just as going non-transitive diminishes tonk’s nastiness, knot’s nastiness can also be reduced by dropping Reflexivity, a different structural rule. Since doing so restores all other rules in the system as (...) validity-preserving, we are inclined to conclude that there, knot is not that nasty. However, since motivating non-reflexivity is harder than motivating non-transitivity, we also acknowledge that disagreement with our conclusion is possible. (shrink)

El artículo investiga los fundamentos racistas del autoritarismo brasileño a través del análisis de la obra de Oliveira Viana. En primer lugar, se desarrolla la idea de “decantación blanca de la teoría social”, fenómeno por el cual la blancura separa y desecha la crítica al racismo de un determinado autor, depurando su pensamiento. Luego, con base en las contribuciones de Clóvis Moura y Michel Foucault, analizamos cómo los argumentos de Viana sobre el “tipo racial” local y el “pueblo” como objeto (...) de ciencia representan un punto de inflexión para la ciencia brasileña. A través del conocimiento gerencial de la población, tales concepciones vinculan decisivamente “raza” y administración pública, constituyendo la soberanía como biopolítica y la arquitectura institucional del Estado como gestión racial de la vida y la muerte. Se concluye que el pensamiento de Viana fue estratégico en el tratamiento de los dilemas de la blanquitud brasileña frente a los impasses resultantes de la posabolición y las transformaciones políticas y económicas globales de principios del siglo XX. : In today’s political philosophy framework, it is commonplace to associate Adam Smith with akind of theory that ignores human dispositions and considers only the self-interested perspective ofindividuals. Although this view has been widely supported in different fields – viz Philosophy andEconomy, we consider this a biased interpretation. Using the Cambridge School orientation, we explainthe importance of historical background in reading Smith’s work to argue that Smith’s writings should beinterpreted within the Scottish Enlightenment context. From this contextual approach, it is (...) possible tosustain an integrated reading of Smith’s books The Theory of Moral Sentiments (TMS) and An Inquiryinto the Nature and Cause of the Wealth of Nations (WN). This reading leads to a more faithfulinterpretation of Smith’s idea that the agent in society is morally engaged in socio-economic relations.Once this hypothesis is confirmed, we will defend a systematic analysis of Smith’s philosophy arguingthat Smith’s philosophy is a holistic system, in what we call a tripartite theory. The issue whether science can be correctly submitted to ethical judgment has been widely debated especially in the 1960s. Those who denied the legitimacy of such a judgment stressed that this would entail an undue limitation of the freedom of science; those who defended such a limitation laid stress on the great dangers that an uncontrolled growth of scientific knowledge has already produced and would continue to produce against humankind. This sterile debate can be settled by recognizing that scientific knowledge (...) can and must be evaluated, as far as its validity is concerned, exclusively through the methodological criteria admitted by the professionals of the single scientific disciplines concerned, and no ethical judgment is pertinent from this point of view. Nevertheless, if we consider science as a particular system of social activities, entailing concrete procedures, conditions and applications, the ethical evaluation of these actions is pertinent and correct. A second question is whether or not the inclusion of these ethical investigations in the specific domain of philosophy of science is correct. If one conceives philosophy of science simply as an epistemology of science consisting in a logical-methodological investigation about the language of scientific theories, this broadening would appear spurious. This view, however, is too narrow and dated: a fully fledged philosophical investigation on the complex phenomenon of science cannot prevent important outlooks and instruments of the philosophical inqujiry from legitimately pertaining to the philosophy of science. In the Organon Aristotle describes some deductive schemata in which inconsistencies do not entail the trivialization of the logical theory involved. This thesis is corroborated by three different theoretical topics by him discussed, which are presented in this paper. We analyse inference schema used by Aristotle in the Protrepticus and the method of indirect demonstration for categorical syllogisms. Both methods exemplify as Aristotle employs classical reductio ad absurdum strategies. Following, we discuss valid syllogisms from opposite premises (contrary and contradictory) studied (...) by the Stagerian in the Analytica Priora (B15). According to him, the following syllogisms are valid from opposite premises, in which small Latin letters stand for terms such as subject and predicate, and capital Latin letters stand for the categorical propositions such as in the traditional notation: (i) in the second figure, Eba,Aba ` Eaa (Cesare), Aba, Eba ` Eaa (Camestres), Eba, I ba ` Oaa (Festino), and Aba,Oba ` Oaa (Baroco); (ii) in the third one, Eab,Aab ` Oaa (Felapton), Oab,Aab ` Oaa (Bocardo) and Eab, Iab ` Oaa (Ferison). Finally, we discuss the passage from the Analytica Posteriora (A11) in which Aristotle states that the Principle of Non-Contradiction is not generally presupposed in all demonstrations (scientific syllogisms), but only in those in which the conclusion must be proved from the Principle; the Stagerian states that if a syllogism of the first figure has the major term consistent, the other terms of the demonstration can be each one separately inconsistent. These results allow us to propose an interpretation of his deductive theory as a broad sense paraconsistent theory. Firstly, we proceed to a hermeneutical analysis, evaluating its logical significance and the interplay of the results with some other points of Aristotle’s philosophy. Secondly, we point to a logical interpretation of the Aristotelian syllogisms from opposite premises in the antilogisms method proposed by Christine Ladd-Franklin in 1883, and we also present a logical treatment of the Aristotelian demonstration with inconsistent material in the paraconsistent logics Cn, 1 _ n _!, introduced by da Costa in 1963. The aim of this paper is to contribute to clarify the meaning of the thesis of the transcendence of the Good (τὸ ἀγαθόν) pointed out in Plato’s Republic. Against some contemporary readings of a Neo-Platonic nature, but also against others that are opposed to these, we propose to interpret the passage by linking the thesis of the transcendence of the Good with the condition of first principle(ἀρχή) and maximum power(δύναμις) that Plato ascribes to the Idea of Good, as well as (...) with his doctrine of the absolute self-sufficiency of the Good. El objetivo de este trabajo es contribuir a clarificar el sentido de la tesis de la trascendencia del Bien (τὸ ἀγαθόν) apuntada en la República de Platón. Frente a algunas lecturas contemporáneas de corte neoplatónico, pero también frente a algunas otras opuestas a ellas, proponemos interpretar el pasaje vinculando la tesis de la trascendencia del Bien con la condición de primer principio (ἀρχή) y de máxima potencia (δύναμις) que Platón adscribe a la Idea de Bien, así como con su doctrina de la autosuficiencia absoluta del Bien. Este artículo investiga la historia de algunos de los mitos y supersticiones sobre la mandrágora (Mandragora spp.) que estaban en circulación en el mundo árabo-islámico entre los siglos X al XVII y analiza los usos mágicos de la planta en ese contexto. Más concretamente, se analiza cómo y para qué era utilizada la mandrágora en el marco de las operaciones de magia blanca o natural (al-sīmiyāʾ), relacionando sus usos con las diferentes ciencias o artes (ʿulūm) que intervienen en la definición (...) y práctica de esta forma de magia. Los resultados de la investigación indican que la mandrágora ocupó un lugar muy destacado en la farmacopea vegetal utilizada en las prácticas de magia blanca, tal y como muestran los ungüentos, amuletos, talismanes, sahumerios, fumigaciones, inhalaciones y filtros de mandrágora documentados en las fuentes árabes y que estaban destinados a muy diferentes fines. Los resultados también indican que las creencias mágicas sobre la planta presentes en la tradición árabo-islámica tienen su origen en los mitos y supersticiones de la Antigüedad grecolatina y oriental; al mismo tiempo, muestran un estrecho paralelismo con el complejo de creencias y prácticas vigentes en la Europa cristiana del período objeto de este estudio. A formação política do professor: um olhar sobre a história Resumo: A presente pesquisa tem como finalidade possibilitar uma compreensão do desenvolvimento dos processos de formação política dos professores no âmago de um corpo social capitalista, objetivando fornecer as condições necessárias para repensar o contexto contemporâneo fundamentado na história. Partindo essencialmente da formação de professores, essa compreensão foi relacionada ao cenário político, econômico e social, uma vez que são as influências políticas reinantes no corpo social que sistematizam os processos formativos. A partir disso foram elaboradas observações a respeito dos referenciais teóricos que trabalham a temática; o exame dos contrassensos da formação política no corpo social capitalista; o professor enquanto intelectual orgânico; função política e social do professor no contexto da educação brasileira, assim como o delineamento dessa educação no contexto neoliberal e sua privatização. Tratou-se de uma Pesquisa Bibliográfica, de natureza Qualitativa. Este estudo permitiu compreender que é há a necessidade de discorrer sobre a formação de professores, uma vez que compreendemos que o contexto histórico da formação política do professor já necessitaria ser uma fase conquistada no momento em que objetivamos alcançar uma formação pedagógica de suma importância para todos os sujeitos. Teacher policy education: a look at history Abstract: The purpose of this research is to enable an understanding of the development of teachers' political formation processes in the core of a capitalist social body, aiming to provide the necessary conditions to rethink the contemporary context grounded in history. Starting essentially from teacher education, this understanding was related to the political, economic and social scenario, since it is the reigning political influences in the social body that systematize the formative processes. From this, observations were elaborated about the theoretical references that work the theme; the examination of the countermeasures of political formation in the capitalist social body; the teacher as an organic intellectual; political and social function of the teacher in the context of Brazilian education, as well as the delineation of this education in the neoliberal context and its privatization. It was a Bibliographic Research, of a Qualitative nature. This study allowed us to understand that there is a need to talk about teacher education, since we understand that the historical context of political teacher education would already need to be a stage achieved when we aim to achieve a pedagogical training of paramount importance for all the subjects. Fundamentalmente basado en la formación del profesorado, esta comprensión estuvo relacionada con el escenario político, económico y social, ya que son las influencias políticas que prevalecen en el cuerpo social las que sistematizan los procesos de formación. En base a eso, se hicieron observaciones sobre los marcos teóricos que funcionan con el tema; el examen de las contradicciones de la formación política en el cuerpo social capitalista; el profesor como intelectual orgánico; función política y social del docente en el contexto de la educación brasileña, así como el diseño de esa educación en el contexto neoliberal y su privatización. Fue una Investigación Bibliográfica, de carácter Cualitativo. Este estudio permitió comprender que existe la necesidad de hablar de formación docente, pues entendemos que el contexto histórico de la formación política docente ya tendría que ser una etapa alcanzada en la que pretendemos lograr una formación pedagógica de suma importancia para todos los actores. asignaturas. Humans have used arguments for defending or refuting statements long before the creation of logic as a specialized discipline. This can be interpreted as the fact that an intuitive notion of “logical consequence” or a psychic disposition to articulate reasoning according to this pattern is present in common sense, and logic simply aims at describing and codifying the features of this spontaneous capacity of human reason. It is well known, however, that several arguments easily accepted by common sense are actually (...) “logical fallacies”, and this indicates that logic is not just a descriptive, but also a prescriptive or normative enterprise, in which the notion of logical consequence is defined in a precise way and then certain rules are established in order to maintain the discourse in keeping with this notion. Yet in the justification of the correctness and adequacy of these rules commonsense reasoning must necessarily be used, and in such a way its foundational role is recognized. Moreover, it remains also true that several branches and forms of logic have been elaborated precisely in order to reflect the structural features of correct argument used in different fields of human reasoning and yet insufficiently mirrored by the most familiar logical formalisms.
