The extent to which we generalize a novel property from a sample of familiar instances to novel instances depends on the sample composition. Previous property induction experiments have only used samples consisting of novel types (unique entities). Because real‐world evidence samples often contain redundant tokens (repetitions of the same entity), we studied the effects on property induction of adding types and tokens to an observed sample. In Experiments 1–3, we presented participants with a sample of birds or flowers known to (...) have a novel property and probed whether this property generalized to novel items varying in similarity to the initial sample. Increasing the number of novel types (e.g., new birds with the target property) in a sample produced tightening, promoting property generalization to highly similar stimuli but decreasing generalization to less similar stimuli. On the other hand, increasing the number of tokens (e.g., repeated presentations of the same bird with the target property) had little effect on generalization. Experiment 4 showed that repeated tokens are encoded and can benefit recognition, but appear to be given little weight when inferring property generalization. We modified an existing Bayesian model of induction (Navarro, Dry, & Lee, 2012) to account for both the information added by new types and the discounting of information conveyed by tokens. (shrink)

This reflection is based on a conversation with Professor Carole Pateman on 4th December 2017 as we prepared for a conference at Cardiff University to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of her seminal work, The Sexual Contract. As socio-legal scholars, The Sexual Contract has been formative in, and transformative of, our understandings of law and gender. We explore Professor Pateman’s academic journey and consider how she came to write a ground-breaking book that has made major impacts on socio-legal and feminist legal (...) studies. Supporting children to successfully transition from primary to secondary school is of utmost importance for several reasons, including to prevent future emotional and behavioural problems. Level Up is a novel, UK-based intervention consisting of five online group sessions, straddling the summer holidays, and providing at-risk children and their parents/carers with skills to manage their behaviour, emotions, and relationships to support their transition to secondary school. A prior evaluation of Level Up reported a need to better describe the mechanisms of change. (...) This study therefore evaluated the experiences of children and their parents/carers regarding the facilitators and barriers to engagement and change, and the perceived impact. Fourteen children and 17 parents/carers were interviewed. Identified barriers and facilitators were: (1) Having a safe, supportive, and fun space, (2) Learning through connection, (3) A family approach, (4) Problematic group dynamics, and (5) Connecting through video calls. Perceived impact was described as: (1) Empowering children, (2) Supporting children socially, (3) Supporting parents and carers in their parenting role, and (4) Supporting a successful transition to secondary school. Another theme (5) describes some families’ experiences of limited impact. These findings can be used to better understand how to support children in their school transition. (shrink)

The poet Henrich Hudemann from Holstein achieved lasting fame through his innovative contributions to German poetry of the Early Baroque period. They have earned him a place in the manuals of literary history, where his work is considered an important stage in the emergence of a refined vernacular poetry. However, like many of his contemporaries, Hudemann also left an oeuvre of sophisticated Latin poems, inspired mainly by Horace’s lyric poetry. The present paper investigates Hudemann’s artistic as well as his more (...) practical aims. By using the poetic forms of classical antiquity for the expression of his religious beliefs, Hudemann created a remarkable specimen of Christian humanism through which he hoped to gain access to the leading intellectual figures of Europe, especially Daniel Heinsius. La desigualdad entre ricos y pobres no decrece. Frente a esta realidad, el autor realza que detrás de la desigualdad hay un problema más hondo de falta de libertad, pues: “hay muchas cosas que los hombres, si llevan la capa remendada, no se atreven a decir”. Por ello –señala- el republicanismo democrático, de Jefferson a Robespierre, y de Rousseau a Marx, no ha dejado de plantear la necesidad de repolitizar la vida social, e incluir en la agenda política los graves (...) problemas de dominación que sufren los más desfavorecidos. Este propósito tendría un camino eficaz seg{un el autor a través de la creación de mecanismos institucionales que doten de seguridad material y económica a toda la ciudadanía, haciendo reales las libertades formales y que permita a los individuos hacer frente eficazmente a situaciones de dominación. Uno de esos mecanismos institucionales es la Renta Básica, propuesta sobre desarrollada por el autor en el presente artículo. (shrink)

El presente artículo responde algunas objeciones que Damiani, en su trabajo “Comunidad, realidad y pragmatismo”, efectúa a un artículo anterior mío sobre lo incognoscible en Peirce: “Lo incognoscible y los límites del sentido”. Señalo que nuestros desacuerdos conciernen principalmente a dos puntos: si tiene sentido sostener que no podemos saber si hay incognoscibles, y si cabe defender la tesis de Peirce sin comprometerse con el idealismo. Al argumentar por una respuesta afirmativa al primer punto y por una negativa al segundo, (...) intento justificar una actitud agnóstica respecto de lo incognoscible: la de que no podemos saber si hay incognoscibles. Este libro recopila siete estudios que discuten algunas de las aportaciones de Aristóteles, Platón y Sexto Empírico en temas de argumentación filosófica, tiempo, causalidad y escepticismo radical. Algunas de las preguntas que abordo incluyen: ¿Qué papel debe tener la metáfora y la analogía en el discurso filosófico? ¿Cuáles son los presupuestos éticos de una discusión filosófica abierta y productiva y por qué a veces fracasa? ¿Cuál es el alcance y qué se debe responder ante el escepticismo radical? ¿Es el tiempo (...) una categoría fundamental para comprender la realidad? ¿Qué es una causa y cuántos tipos hay? El interés por la argumentación filosófica atraviesa todos los capítulos del libro. Sin embargo, este tema es más prominente en los caps. 1, 3, 4 y 5. Hay tres capítulos que analizan de manera detallada diversos aspectos de la metafísica Platónica, incluyendo la causalidad en el Sofista (cap. 4) y Fedón (cap. 6), así como el concepto del tiempo en el contexto de la cosmogonía del Timeo (cap. 8). Una tercera terna de capítulos desarrollan el escepticismo de Sexto Empírico (cap. 2, 5 y 7). Todos los capítulos fueron publicados con anterioridad en revistas especializadas y compilaciones en el lapso de doce años (de 2009 a 2022). Cinco capítulos fueron publicados originalmente en inglés, y presento aquí una traducción al español para poner estos textos al alcance de lectores hispanoparlantes. La siempre fascínate escritura rulfiana continúa dialogando con el mundo. El así conocido “escritor de las letras mexicanas”, nos sigue ofreciendo un mar de posibilidades de acercamiento a otras áreas humanísticas entre las cuáles incluimos a la filosofía. Coincidentes en la época y en la geografía mexicana, Juan Rulfo y María Zambrano se encontraron en 1939. Exponentes ejemplares y creadores de nuevos caminos en la escritura literaria y filosófica, los exponemos como paralelos a través de dos piezas claves de sus (...) obras: Pedro Páramo y Los sueños y el tiempo. La antropología zambraniana viene propuesta como uno de estos senderos creativos y creadores de la búsqueda del propio ser y del sentido mismo del existir. Dicho pronunciamiento antropológico lo exponemos como perspectiva de lectura del viaje no sólo de Juan preciado, ansioso buscador de su padre, sino de todos los lectores de Rulfo que hemos tejido con sus letras —extractoras de sueños y productoras de anhelos— la frágil cuerda que sostiene la aventura del descubrir nuestro lugar en el oscuro pozo del mundo. Realismo mágico y Razón poética en armonía propositiva que revela el origen de ambos proveniente de la misma semilla del ser. The problem known as Buridan’s Ass says that a hungry donkey equipoised between two identical bales of hay will starve to death. Indecision kills the ass. Some philosophers worry about human analogs. Computer scientists since the 1960s have known about the computer versions of such cases. From what Leslie Lamport calls ‘Buridan’s Principle’—a discrete decision based on a continuous range of input-values cannot be made in a bounded time—it follows that the possibilities for human analogs of Buridan’s Ass are far (...) more wide-ranging and securely provable than has been acknowledged in philosophy. We are never necessarily decisive. This is mathematically provable. I explore four consequences: first, increased interest of the literature’s solutions to Buridan’s Ass; second, a new asymmetry between responsibility for omissions and responsibility for actions; third, clarification of the standard account of akrasia; and, fourth, clarification of the role of credences in normative decision-theory. Our current society seems to require a sharp separation between what can be tolerated in public and what must remain hidden. There is explicit and implicit censorship of both the subject of death and of the crying and suffering of surviving relatives and friends. Medieval literature and literary studies, however, show how the experience of dying and its appropriate manifestations of grief seemed to be more integrated into everyday life, as opposed to the apparent “disintegration” of nowadays. It is possible (...) to begin to detect this evolution already in medieval Hispanic literature itself, from an apparently more public, visible and integrated death in 13th-century Hispanic literature to a more private, concealed and disintegrated death in 15th-century Hispanic literature. This process will continue its journey to the present society of eternal springs and summers from which we have eradicated autumns and winters, seasons as necessary for the cycle of life – for personal, psychological and social balance – as the first two. Resumen Nuestra sociedad actual parece presentar una tajante separación entre lo que puede ser tolerado en público y lo que debe permanecer oculto. Hay una censura explícita e implícita tanto del tema de la muerte como del llanto y el sufrimiento de los familiares y amigos supervivientes. Sin embargo, la literatura medieval y los estudios literarios sobre la misma muestran cómo la experiencia del morir y sus apropiadas manifestaciones de dolor parecían estar más integradas en la vida cotidiana en contraposición a la aparente “desintegración” actual. Es posible comenzar a detectar esta evolución ya en la propia literatura hispánica medieval, desde una muerte aparentemente más pública, visible e integrada en la literatura hispánica del siglo XIII hasta una muerte más privada, oculta y desintegrada en la literatura hispánica del siglo XV. Este proceso continuará su recorrido hasta una sociedad actual de eternas primaveras y veranos de la que hemos erradicado los otoños e inviernos, estaciones tan necesarias para el ciclo de la vida —para el equilibrio personal, psicológico y social— como las dos primeras. Si la democracia consiste en posibilitar que todas las personas tengan iguales posibilidades de influir en las decisiones que les afectan, las sociedades digitales tienen que interrogarse por el modo de conseguir que los nuevos entornos hagan factible esa igualdad. Las primeras dificultades son conceptuales: entender cómo se configura la interacción entre los humanos y los algoritmos, en qué consiste el aprendizaje de estos dispositivos y cuál es la naturaleza de sus sesgos. Inmediatamente después nos topamos con la cuestión ineludible (...) de qué clase de igualdad estamos tratando de asegurar, teniendo en cuenta la diversidad de concepciones de la justicia que hay en nuestras sociedades. Si articular ese pluralismo no es un asunto que pueda resolverse con una técnica agregativa, sino que requiere compromisos políticos, entonces una concepción deliberativa de la democracia parece la más apta para conseguir esa igualdad a la que aspiran las sociedades democráticas. A pesar de que en la obra de Husserl encontramos un yo-cuerpo, un yo-persona y un yo trascendental, para él no existe un Yo, si por Yo se entiende una entidad que habita nuestro cuerpo como si éste fuese su receptáculo. Por ello, Husserl rechazó la concepción dualista del hombre. El hombre es para él una totalidad estructurada dinámíca, intencional y teleológicamente, gracias a la cual puede experimentar el mundo significativamente. Este artículo analiza la función de la imaginación moral en la enunciación de problemas morales que permitan el reconocimiento de la alteridad. El elemento transversal es la necesidad de promover la actitud fenomenológica de examinar las verdades sobre las que se erige la vida cotidiana para evitar la repetición de las violencias implícitas de lo aparentemente sobreentendido. La tesis central sostiene que la educación de la sensibilidad imaginativa establece las condiciones necesarias para permitir el florecimiento [eudaimonía] de la vida del (...) otro y en ello hay una apuesta por una ética de la otredad. El texto se estructura en tres apartados: I. La violencia subyacente en la normalidad, II. La actitud fenomenológica como acontecimiento de alteridad y III. La diversidad cultural en la sociedad y en las aulas es una realidad patente que hay que tener en cuenta y no obviar. La investigación en el campo de las actitudes desarrolladas por parte de los agentes educativos se hace inexorablemente pertinente y necesaria para la construcción de una sociedad futura libre de conflictos innecesarios. En este estudio se han analizado las actitudes familiares mediante entrevista semiestructurada. Se realizó un análisis cualitativo y cuantitativo, obteniendo el perfil sobre pensamiento en torno (...) a la diversidad cultural de progenitores e hijos. El grado de concordancia de dichas actitudes queda reflejado en el análisis de los resultados, apreciando desconocimiento de grupos culturalmente diversos, ventajas de enriquecimiento personal, convicción sobre la necesidad de integrar tanto a los estudiantes como a sus familias, preparación del profesorado y fomento de unas relaciones óptimas entre alumnos, docentes y familias. No obstante, existen divergencias en la función de la escuela con relación a las conductas, creencias, tradiciones y dificultades, y a la formación de los docentes para superarlas y para el tratamiento de la diversidad. Esta investigación pretende aportar datos para determinar en qué medida el feedback influye en el rendimiento académico.Se ha realizado una experimentación con estudiantes universitarios de los grados de marketing y de educación física. Se ha dividido la muestra en tres grupos en función del tipo de información -feedback- que se les proporcionaba.Los resultados muestran que hay correlación entre la información facilitada y los resultados obtenidos. El rendimiento mejora en función de la información cuando ésta es correcta. El objetivo general de esta investigación fue analizar los desafíos que generan las formas de ataque de la guerra no convencional a la ética militar frente a la defensa integral y la seguridad de la nación. Se apoyó en el enfoque cuantitativo de tipo documental. Las operaciones militares contemporáneas exigen altos estándares al liderazgo de los oficiales; en consecuencia, deben ser conscientes de impacto que frente a situaciones difíciles tienen en otras personas; por lo que su conducta debe estar en (...) línea con sus roles, normas y valores éticos, el comportamiento ético frente la guerra difusa y el dominio cibernético han ganado importancia en las discusiones teóricas y doctrinarias en el ámbito militar. La utilización de la fuerza militar debe estar dentro de los límites de la norma, pero sobre todo debe ser ética, lo cual es una de las razones principales por las que existe la ética militar. Sin embargo, no hay leyes que regulen los conflictos cibernéticos ni se enmarca en los conceptos de la teoría de guerra tradicional. Entre las conclusiones resaltan que los ataques cibernéticos dirigidos a la FANB podrían ser considerados delitos de guerra. Las armas de guerra cibernéticas son costosas y su efectividad disminuye rápidamente después de su uso debido a la pérdida de su elemento sorpresa, lo que las hace poco rentables. (shrink)

En una excursión a los indios ranqueles , hay un pasaje en el que Lucio Mansilla configura un relato mítico destinado a justificar ante el cacique ranquel el derecho de los blancos sobre las tierras. La matriz interpretativa a partir de la cual Mansilla define específicamente las identidades culturales será revisitada en el discurso literario. En el presente trabajo analizaremos dos novelas argentinas contemporáneas –El oscuro de Daniel Moyano y Más liviano que el aire de Federico Jeanmaire– que recrean (...) los enfrentamientos de sus respectivos contextos de producción a la luz de las antinomias tramadas durante el siglo XIX y desmantelan los mecanismos a partir de los cuales las elites configuraron una imagen de la sociedad argentina como una comunidad blanca y europea. En este ambicioso libro, el biólogo Daniel W. McShea y el filósofo de la biología Robert N. Brandon desafían las explicaciones explícitas encontradas en la litera-tura acerca del origen de la diversidad y la complejidad en los seres vivos. Estas explicaciones recurren en su mayoría a la acción de la selección natural, como ser, a la selección diversificadora/disruptiva, a la selección de niveles superiores favoreciendo a especies/clados con mayor propensión a la especiación, o a las ventajas de una mayor (...) división del trabajo, entre otras alternativas (p. 1). Si bien estas explicaciones pueden ser correctas, no constituirían toda la historia, según los autores, pues habría una tendencia de fondo no reconocida en la literatura (pero invocada en las explicaciones de casos concretos) hacia un aumento de la diversidad y la complejidad. Esta tendencia surgiría simplemente de que las variaciones azarosas, cuando se heredan, se acumulan en diferentes direcciones en diferentes poblaciones, con el resultado de que la diversidad se incrementa. Para expresar esta tendencia, los autores proponen una ley, que denominan ZFEL (por zero-force evolutionary law) y que formulan de la siguiente manera: “En cualquier sistema evolutivo en el que hay variación azarosa y he-rencia, en ausencia de fuerzas y constricciones, la diversidad y la complejidad tenderán a aumentar” (p. 4). Según Danièle Moyal-Sharrock y Avrum Stroll, hay razones de peso para hablar de un “tercer Wittgenstein” cuyo corpus estaría formado por todas las obras que el filósofo vienés escribió con posterioridad a 1946, incluida la segunda parte de sus Investigaciones filosóficas. Entre las principales razones se encuentran el desarrollo de una nueva forma de fundamentalismo en la que el fundamento pertenece a una categoría distinta de lo fundamentado; la gramaticalización de la experiencia; la disolución del problema mente-cuerpo y la desmitificación (...) del escepticismo. En este artículo no sólo analizo dichos argumentos, sino que también parto de las principales diferencias entre los que se han venido llamando “primer” y “segundo Wittgenstein” para concluir que no tiene sentido hablar de un “tercer Wittgenstein”. This paper builds upon recent work in narrative theory and the philosophy of technology by examining the place of transparency and responsibility in discussions of AI, and what some of the implications of this might be for thinking ethically about AI and especially AI practices, that is, the structured social activities implicating and defining what AI is. In this paper, we aim to show how pursuing a narrative understanding of technology and AI can support knowledge of process and practice through (...) transparency, as well help summon us to responsibility through visions of possibility and of actual harms arising from AI practices. We provide reflections on the relations between narrative, transparency and responsibility, building an argument that narratives (about AI, practices, and those persons implicated in its design, implementation, and deployment) support the kind of knowing and understanding that is the aim of transparency, and, moreover, that such knowledge supports responsibility in informing agents and activating responsibility through creating knowledge about something that can and should be responded to. Furthermore, we argue for considering an expansion of the kinds of practices that we might legitimately consider ‘AI practices’ given the diverse set of (often materially embedded) activities that sustain and are sustained by AI that link directly to its ethical acceptability and which are rendered transparent in the narrative mode. Finally, we argue for an expansion of narratives and narrative sources to be considered in questions of AI, understanding that transparency is multi-faceted and found in stories from diverse sources and people. Business ethics should be taught in business schools as an integrated part of core curricula in MBA programs with a dual focus on both analytical frameworks and their applications to the business disciplines. To overcome the reluctance of many faculty to handle ethical issues, a critical mass of faculty must develop suitable materials, educate their peers in its use, and take the lead by introducing it in their own courses and on senior management programs.

Great leaders are ethical stewards who generate high levels of commitment from followers. In this paper, we propose that perceptions about the trustworthiness of leader behaviors enable those leaders to be perceived as ethical stewards. We define ethical stewardship as the honoring of duties owed to employees, stakeholders, and society in the pursuit of long-term wealth creation. Our model of relationship between leadership behaviors, perceptions of trustworthiness, and the nature of ethical stewardship reinforces the importance of ethical governance in dealing (...) with employees and in creating organizational systems that are congruent with espoused organizational values. This book examines the contributions of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French women philosophers and intellectuals to moralist writing. Moralist writing, a distinctively French genre, draws on philosophical and literary traditions extending back to classical antiquity. Closely connected to salon culture and influenced by Augustinianism, it engages social and political questions, epistemology, moral psychology, and virtue ethics. The first half of the book analyzes women’s use of moralist forms such as the essay, maxim, and “character” or portrait to explore classical topics: self-knowledge (...) and knowledge of the self, the ethics and obligations of friendship, the relation of the passions to happiness. The second half focuses on topics that relate directly to women’s lifeworld: the critique of the institution of marriage, the status of older women, and the question of women’s nature and capabilities. Each chapter traces the evolution of women’s moralist thought from the late seventeenth century to the Enlightenment and the decades immediately following the French Revolution, a period of tremendous change in the horizon of possibilities for women as public figures and intellectuals. This paper presents a cognitive model of the planning process. The model generalizes the theoretical architecture of the Hearsay‐ll system. Thus, it assumes that planning comprises the activities of a variety of cognitive “specialists.” Each specialist can suggest certain kinds of decisions for incorporation into the plan in progress. These include decisions about: (a) how to approach the planning problem; (b) what knowledge bears on the problem; (c) what kinds of actions to try to plan; (d) what specific actions to (...) plan; and (e) how to allocate cognitive resources during planning. Within each of these categories, different specialists suggest decisions at different levels of abstraction. The activities of the various specialists are not coordinated in any systematic way. Instead, the specialists operate opportunistically, suggesting decisions whenever promising opportunities arise. The paper presents a detailed account of the model and illustrates its assumptions with a “thinking aloud” protocol. It also describes the performance of a computer simulation of the model. The paper contrasts the proposed model with successive refinement models and attempts to resolve apparent differences between the two points of view. (shrink)

Humans possess great capacity for behavioral and cultural change, but our ability to manage change is still limited. This article has two major objectives: first, to sketch a basic science of intentional change centered on evolution; second, to provide examples of intentional behavioral and cultural change from the applied behavioral sciences, which are largely unknown to the basic sciences community.All species have evolved mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity that enable them to respond adaptively to their environments. Some mechanisms of phenotypic plasticity (...) count as evolutionary processes in their own right. The human capacity for symbolic thought provides an inheritance system having the same kind of combinatorial diversity as does genetic recombination and antibody formation. Taking these propositions seriously allows an integration of major traditions within the basic behavioral sciences, such as behaviorism, social constructivism, social psychology, cognitive psychology, and evolutionary psychology, which are often isolated and even conceptualized as opposed to one another.The applied behavioral sciences include well-validated examples of successfully managing behavioral and cultural change at scales ranging from individuals to small groups to large populations. However, these examples are largely unknown beyond their disciplinary boundaries, for lack of a unifying theoretical framework. Leaders in today's world face the challenge of earning the trust and commitment of organizational members if they expect to guide their companies to success in a highly competitive global context. In this article, we present empirical results indicating that when leadership behaviors are perceived as trustworthy through the observer's mediating lens, trust increases and leaders are more likely to be viewed as ethical stewards who honor a higher level of duties. When certain formal symbol systems (e.g., computer programs) are implemented as dynamic physical symbol systems (e.g., when they are run on a computer) their activity can be interpreted at higher levels (e.g., binary code can be interpreted as LISP, LISP code can be interpreted as English, and English can be interpreted as a meaningful conversation). These higher levels of interpretability are called "virtual" systems. If such a virtual system is interpretable as if it had a mind, is such a "virtual (...) mind" real? This is the question addressed in this "virtual" symposium, originally conducted electronically among four cognitive scientists: Donald Perlis, a computer scientist, argues that according to the computationalist thesis, virtual minds are real and hence Searle's Chinese Room Argument fails, because if Searle memorized and executed a program that could pass the Turing Test in Chinese he would have a second, virtual, Chinese-understanding mind of which he was unaware (as in multiple personality). Stevan Harnad, a psychologist, argues that Searle's Argument is valid, virtual minds are just hermeneutic overinterpretations, and symbols must be grounded in the real world of objects, not just the virtual world of interpretations. Computer scientist Patrick Hayes argues that Searle's Argument fails, but because Searle does not really implement the program: A real implementation must not be homuncular but mindless and mechanical, like a computer. Only then can it give rise to a mind at the virtual level. Philosopher Ned Block suggests that there is no reason a mindful implementation would not be a real one. (shrink)

Hayes (bio)Keywordsacceptance, contextualism, influence, therapyThe target article (García-Montes et al. 2008) explores the application of the concept of superstition, examined from a Sartrian perspective, to psychopathology such as obsessive–compulsive disorder and psychosis. They compare their analysis to two different technical terms taken from current research programs in psychology, which are the notions of Thought–Action Fusion (...) and Experiential Avoidance (EA). We have been asked to respond because our work in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT; Hayes, Strosahl, and Wilson 1999) and Relational Frame Theory (RFT; Hayes, Barnes-Holmes, and Roche 2001) are part of the foundational work in EA, and thus in this short commentary we comment on the article from the point of view of our research program.The article notes several areas of overlap between the ACT/RFT work on EA and their Sartrian perspective on superstition, such as the holistic and contextualistic nature of the analysis, but also several differences which the authors feel advantage their own view.It is difficult to compare the two lines of work without appreciating their context and purpose. Sartre was not a scientific psychologist; ACT/RFT are part of a specific effort at scientific system building, which we term here “contextual behavioral science” (AKA, post-Skinnerian behavior analysis).Contextual behavioral science is a social enterprise that has as its purpose the development of increasingly organized statements of relations among events that allow actions embedded in their historical and situational context to be predicted and influenced with precision, scope, and depth. “Precision” means that a limited set of analytic constructs apply to any one event; “scope” means that a limited set of constructs are needed to analyze a broad range of events; and “depth” means that constructs should cohere across different levels of analysis.Although a real world (or at least the one world) is assumed, the partitioning of the world is thought to be the result of our continuous interactions in and with it. These partitions are not ontological constructions from the perspective of contextual behavioral science because they, too, are actions that are purposive and embedded in their historical and situational contexts. The [End Page 269] deliberate attempt to analyze the world scientifically does not contradict the holistic standpoint of contextualism. When analytic goals are accomplished, constructs are “true,” but multiple truths are possible given multiple goals and historical and situational contexts. Conversely, all forms of contextualism become dogmatic and self-contradictory if their goals are not stated. It is common for contextualists of all varieties to state and defend the ultimate apprehension of reality as a whole, for example, without realizing that any statement about the world including such a defense is a form of breaking down this whole into parts. As we will try to show, the target article seems to fall into this usual contextualistic trap by arguing for what is better, without stating clearly “better for what, assessed how” and without viewing concepts with relevance to their purpose.Prediction and influence with precision, scope, and depth is a purpose, stated naked and in the wind. It is not defended, justified, or given ontological status. To generate powerful ways of speaking as measured against that purpose, contextual behavioral science has embraced a wide variety of methodologies, including laboratory research designed to refine behavioral principles with high levels of precision and scope, and applied research such as randomized controlled trials, analog research, and measure development that test the scope of the principles and theories that result (e.g., Hayes et al. 2006). Recent experimental work offers evidence that infants become aware of suffixes at a remarkably early age, as early as 6 months for the English suffix -s. Here, we seek to understand this ability though the strategy of computational modeling. We evaluate a set of distributional learning models for their ability to mimic the observed acquisition order for various suffixes when trained on a corpus of child-directed speech. Our best-performing model first segments utterances of the corpus into candidate words, thus populating (...) a proto-lexicon. It then searches the proto-lexicon to discover affixes, making use of two distributional heuristics that we call Terminus Frequency and Parse Reliability. With suitable parameter settings, this model is able to mimic the order of acquisition of several suffixes, as established in experimental work. In contrast, models that attempt to spot affixes within utterances, without reference to words, consistently fail. Specifically, they fail to match acquisition order, and they extract implausible pseudo-affixes from single words of high token frequency, as in [pi-] from peekaboo. Our modeling results thus suggest that affix learning proceeds hierarchically, with word discovery providing the essential basis for affix discovery. (shrink)
