We isolate a condition on a class A of ordinals sufficient to Δ1-code it by a real in a class-generic extension of L. We then apply this condition to show that the class of ordinals of L-cofinality ω is Δ1 in a real of L-degree strictly below O#.

Maharam algebras are complete Boolean algebras carrying a positive continuous submeasure. They were introduced and studied by Maharam [D. Maharam, An algebraic characterization of measure algebras, Ann. of Math. 48 154–167] in relation to Von Neumann’s problem on the characterization of measure algebras. The question whether every Maharam algebra is a measure algebra has been the main open problem in this area for around 60 years. It was finally resolved by Talagrand [M. Talagrand, Maharam’s problem, preprint, 31 pages, 2006] who (...) provided the first example of a Maharam algebra which is not a measure algebra. In this paper we survey some recent work on Maharam algebras in relation to the two conditions proposed by Von Neumann: weak distributivity and the countable chain condition. It turns out that by strengthening either one of these conditions one obtains a ZFC characterization of Maharam algebras. We also present some results on Maharam algebras as forcing notions showing that they share some of the well-known properties of measure algebras. (shrink)

In this paper I respond to Robert Taylor's argument that a Rawlsian framework does not support strong affirmative action programs. The paper makes three main arguments. The first disputes Taylor's claim that strong AA would not be needed in ideal conditions. Private racial discrimination, I suggest, might still exist in such conditions, so strong AA might be needed there. The second challenges Taylor's claims that pure procedural justice constrains Rawlsian nonideal theory. I argue that this rests on a fetishizing of (...) pure procedural justice that is absent from Rawls's work. I also show that a revised formulation of Taylor's concern here also fails. My third argument makes a positive Rawlsian case for strong AA in nonideal conditions that builds on a Taylor concession. Taylor suggests that the goal of nonideal theory is to create a world in which ideal theory can be applied. My argument begins by showing that another permissible goal of Rawlsian nonideal theory is to ameliorate injustice. I then argue that Rawls's contractualist framework supports the strongest forms of AA when category 3 interventions are blocked. (shrink)

Some problems of modern hermeneutics are considered in the article. The hermeneutic practice and theory are correlated with insufficient elaboration of the latter. Rational and irrational hermeneutics are established. To understand the meaning of the text it is necessary to overcome the author’s subjectivity and the language imperfection. The author outlines the main features of the hermeneutic logic and its non-classical character. The hermeneutic truth depends on the position of the author and not just on the objective reality. This intervention queries whether subjecting feminist jurisprudence to a methodological transfiguration toward pragrammatology (Derrida, in Smith and Kerrigan 1984) holds liberating potential for f (be it ‘woman’, ‘female’ or ‘feminine’) as both a signifier and a subject to be read with lucidity and nuance in feminist justice claims. I examine feminist jurisprudence’s methodological challenges in the settler colonial context of Alaska with respect to the murders of Della Brown (in 2000) and Mindy Schloss (in 2007). I advance my case for (...) pragrammatology as a critical methodology for feminist jurisprudence by subjecting the case(s) of Brown and Schloss to a more lucid (re)reading in two related and intersecting moves. First, I trace and deconstruct the citations of Brown and Schloss’ legal narratives to expose violence in the systemisation of f as a power and legal relation (Ahmed in Soc Legal Stud 4:55–73, 1995). I then examine the paradoxical nature of f justice claims which necessitate a pragrammatological approach. I conclude by advancing counsel on how we might move within paradox. (shrink)

The following essay is an attempt at bringing together two conceptions, the one theological and ascetical, the other philos–ophical. This confrontation may be attempted either from the point of view of theology, using revealed premises, or from the point of view of philosophy using the methods of purely rational analysis. It is the latter task I am undertaking here. I do not argue from revealed premises, but I do take account of the mighty phenomenon of the Christian revelation. It is, (...) as I see it, absolutely essential to keep theology and philosophy distinct as methods, but this does not prevent the one from providing useful material and suggestive hypotheses for the other.
